While being fully immersed in this scenic beauty, it’s easy to overlook a sight that is even more captivating to the north. Here lies a mysterious destination. Chances are you’ve heard whispers of the name. Maybe you’ve always wondered where this place is. Congratulations, you just discovered Crab Island!
Often described as an “island paradise” Destin is, in fact, not an actual island. Just as the aforementioned is a widespread misconception, Crab Island too is not a real island. However, this has not always been the case. Up until the mid-1960s, many locals lovingly referred to this location as “Bird Island” due to an abundance of migratory birds stopping by for a rest and occasionally nesting in the shrubs along its sandy shores. A storm washed much of the landmass away, and the increased velocity of the tides from the installation of the Destin jetties in 1969 sealed its fate.

ISLE OF CRAB Adding to the allure, the origins of the name “Crab Island” are heavily debated. Many locals claim it’s due to the abundance of crabs, countless of which can still be spotted here today. Others believe it’s due to its shape from the air, as darker waters surround it, and at times, it does indeed resemble a crab. No matter how, where, or when the name was derived - one thing is for certain, if you live in or vacation to Destin, it’s a name you need to know.
Today, Crab Island is an expansive underwater sandbar where depending on the tide, the crystal clear water is knee to waist deep for average adults. It’s among the most sought-after attractions in all of Northwest Florida, and it’s THE destination to be social in the water. From paddleboards to yachters, everyone is drawn to this submerged spectacle.

Dolphins are everyday visitors, it’s actually unusal if you don’t see a pod or two – whether you’re on the coast or on Crab Island. They are friendly and this is their home.

As it’s only accessible by watercraft, getting here is half the fun. Deep channels surround Crab Island, and brisk currents eliminate the possibility of walking or swimming to the sandbar. That means you either need to own a watercraft, know someone who does, or you need to opt to rent one for yourself. Fortunately, your options for rentals are as abundant as our jeweltoned water. Nearby, along the Destin Harbor, you can rent a paddle board, kayak, jet ski, pontoon boat, fishing boat, or cabin cruiser. Some services even offer a captain, which can help take your experience to the next level!

Once anchored at Crab Island, you can relax and take it all in, or you can hop off and go exploring. Popular pursuits here include all imaginable water sports, but a few unique vendors really help make this destination memorable and fun for all ages. You can catch the ice cream man and the boiled peanut guy in their rubber dinghies or you can stroll over to some of the varied floating eateries. Snack on fresh fish tacos and consider treating yourself to a frozen daiquiri. Nearby, the kids will love the giant inflatable obstacle course, trampoline, and waterpark. During the busy summer months, local bands and DJs often put on performances, and music can be enjoyed from their floating barges. This is where partiers congregate, so if you are looking for a family-friendly experience, you may want to anchor away from the music. However, if you have a babysitter on board, you still may want to sneak over here and enjoy the tunes. Now you are in-the-know, so hop on board, and let’s head to Crab Island!

CREATIVE FAMILY This family of creators was created itself way back in 2004 with Chris’ dream to establish his own firm on the coast. With Amy by his side to provide encouragement and a business management mindset, the duo moved from Birmingham, Alabama and fully committed to helping others achieve their architectural dreams here in South Walton. With them from the very beginning, Lance was the first to join. Both Charlie and Francisco have been with Archiscapes for a decade and Adrian is now in his fourth year. They’ve been together through marriages, the birth of kids, and more – so it’s easy to see why they consider themselves a family oriented firm. It’s this dynamic that enables Archiscapes to create lasting relationships with their clients, and it’s this same dynamic that empowers them to achieve greatness for each and everyone one of them. The process of achieving this greatness is meticulous, detailed, and a combined effort. The first step is the initial client meeting. This is when the dream is born or at least put down on paper. Chris, is at first influenced by the client’s vision and it’s here he often does his preliminary sketches. Inspiring to see in action, Chris’ brilliance pours out as he works with the client to create the underlying concept in real time. Of course, this is a jointbrainstorming session and the initial plan sketch and final sketch are to follow.

AUTO CAD & 3D Once the sketching phase is concluded, it’s time to draft AutoCAD plans for both the exterior and interior of the property. This process allows people to visualize and simulate the entire project using real-world parameters without a need to build any models or physical structures. A full 3D computer rendering follows, and this is where the concept really comes to life.
After the 3D model has been reviewed, an additional number of detailed AutoCAD plans follow. These moredetailed plans include sections, which are cut-through views that show specifics of the inside components of the structure. Following this step, the project manager connects with the neighborhood design review board (if necessary). Then it is time to finalize interior details and selections.

ust as Destin, Florida has grown from a small fishing village into a thriving tropical destination, so has the historic three-day Destin Fishing Rodeo grown into a month-long festival of fishing fun that attracts visitors from around the world. This year, Destin is celebrating the 70 TH anniversary of this established tradition dating back to May of 1948. With a rich fishing history and long considered the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, it is no surprise that Destin continues to host this ultimate fishing tournament for salt water anglers of all ages.

The Destin Fishing Rodeo began as a way to bring more visitors to Destin, and with 70 years of history behind it, it has been an obvious success. Today, the Rodeo runs through the entire month of October, extending the tourist season and adding more excitement to this already world-renowned paradise.

As a volunteer-based non-profit organization that aims to promote recreational fishing in Destin and foster good sportsmanship and safe fishing among the public, the Destin Fishing Rodeo provides a fun, annual competition for recreational fishermen. With over 2,000 available hours of volunteer service, the support of members, sponsors, local businesses, volunteers, and the fishing community are the reason the Rodeo has succeeded over the years and will continue to succeed.

Until 1991, Rodeo entries were recorded and calculated by hand. At the end of each day, entries were calculated by division and a daily winner was determined. The Rodeo director would stay after the weigh station closed to calculate the winners, type a daily report, and transmit the results to the newspaper for the next day’s edition. Today, the Rodeo reporting methods have matured with improvements in technology. All catches are entered into a computer program and automatically calculated, and reports are generated and emailed to the press for publication. Leaders in any category may be viewed online at any time.

the world travel to Destin for this event to do what they love best – fish! Catching fish, participating in weigh-ins, and joining in the many other festivities promotes a sense of unity and friendly competition among the worldwide fishing community.
Since its inception, the number of species of fish that may be entered into the competition has increased from 15 to 33. Today, fisherman of all ages compete in 29 divisions for bragging rights and prizes sponsored by local businesses. Participants may register private and charter boats at least 24 hours prior to weighing a fish, or shore fisherman may participate by bringing their catch to the scale for weigh-in. Of course, the young and aspiring anglers out there will not be forgotten. Each child who enters a fish into the Rodeo that weighs 1lb. or more receives a rod, reel, and certificate! Weigh-ins are every day on the docks at AJ’s Seafood & Oyster Bar from 10 am until 7 pm. Hundreds of eager onlookers gather to watch the daily weighin. When a shark, big grouper, or tuna is on the scale,

In addition to daily weigh-ins, a variety of other festive activities are available to add to the fun. Shark Saturdays that include epic shark hunts occur every Saturday throughout the duration of the Rodeo. On Halloween, participants don their costumes and take part in the largest and best Halloween party in Destin. For the kids, Destin Harbor hosts a Kids FallFest with entertaining events like face painting, arts and crafts, and pumpkin decorating. Aside from being a wonderful event for locals and tourists, the Destin Fishing Rodeo provides a significant economic impact on the Destin community. In 2015, an estimated 36,518 anglers from 27 states (including locals) and 5 countries participated in
the Rodeo, brining in over five million dollars of revenue into the community. Additionally, fishermen provide nearly four million dollars of income to the local charter boat industry in October. With these tourist-related industries thriving during the Rodeo, nearby restaurants and shopping facilities are likely also seeing an influx of business during this time. Sitting along the shore, toes in the sand, and a pretty lady by my side. I didn’t realize it at the time, but this “pretty lady” would soon become my wife, my partner for life. Just as she does, Destin will always hold a special place in my heart. For us, this white sand paradise is more than just a spot for our annual beach getaway. This is where we fell in love.

It seems like only yesterday, although it’s now long ago, that we were two young lovebirds without a care in the world. It was a spontaneous trip, just a half-day’s drive from home. Our romance was fresh, but it was clear we were both falling hard. She was finishing her shift at the diner and when she came out I was sitting on the tailgate of my pickup, with a smile on my face. Giving her a ride home was a new ritual that we both cherished. Parked out front of her parents’ house, I sprang it on her: “I booked us a place in Destin for the weekend!” I say it was spontaneous, but we talked of Destin often, as did most folks in our town. I guess you could say it was a long time coming. The next weekend as we crossed the bridge and first laid eyes on the jeweltoned waters, I knew I made the right decision. With us, it absolutely was love at first sight for Destin.

We checked in, tossed our bags on the bed, ripped open the sliding glass door, and literally ran to the beach. As we stepped onto the sand, it was cool, even though it was in the peak of summer. Making our way to the glistening gulf, we laughed as the blinding white sand squeaked beneath our feet. Reaching the water’s edge, I remember being surprised by just how warm the water was. It was only my second time in my life to visit a beach; and I can tell you that the Atlantic waters were shockingly cold, and that was definitely not the case here. Our time away was short, although, with her by my side, time stood still. The days were long and joyous, with much of it spent laying by the shore, listening to the waves and laughing the moments away. It’s here, on the sand, where I first realized that this is whom I want to spend the rest of my life with. As the sun set on the last day of our vacation, I made a promise to come back and propose to her at this very spot.

When we returned a year later, my plan was in place. Since our last visit our love had grown even more intense and it was here that I planned to fulfill the promise I had made to myself on my last visit. Crossing the bridge in to town, the same views that had instantaneously stole our hearts welcomed us back. We relived our first vacation together and did many of the same things. However, this trip was for a full week, and we were able to do much more. On the third day, we finally rinsed off our feet and ventured off the beach. We were pleasantly surprised as we explored quaint shops and eateries. We even went off the beaten path via scooter, and explored the side streets, communities, and anything else we could find. Although exploring was fun, I was on a mission. The next day, as we arrived at the small airstrip, I let her know I had a surprise for her. We were going up in a
helicopter! Today, this is common place in Destin, but back then, helicopter rides were few and far between. She was ecstatic and a little nervous. Unbeknownst to her, I was even more nervous, but for a very different reason. I know what you are thinking, I said I was going to propose at the same spot as our first vacation – don’t worry, I am getting to that. We took off, and I recall being surprised on just how fast we were flying along the coast. The views were simply breathtaking. We flew for only a few minutes before we were almost above our condo. My heart was beating fast as I reached in my pocket to retrieve the ring. I could tell she had no idea what was about to happen as we flew closer to our destination. I pointed out the building, and, out front, rows of umbrellas. She tried to make out what it said, but didn’t fully grasp it until we were right over the beach - spelled out in colorful umbrellas, “Will you,” and she turned around as I finished the question.

Well you already know how the rest of the story turned out. Today, we are married, and have two beautiful daughters who, fortunatly for them, look like their beautiful mother. Each year, we return to our special place in the sand on our annual family vacation. Destin is our second home, and on every visit we make a new layer of memories that fill our hearts. Our adventures in Destin are far from over. Our oldest is off to college soon, and her sister is not far behind. Just as I promised to return to Destin to make that “pretty lady” my wife, I will return in a few years to make this place my full-time home in retirement.

Fortunately for both companies, this location flourished and quickly became the go-to hotspot on 30A, and it remained so until the recent passing of local legend, Pandora’s founder Sam
Montalto. Continuing the legacy, never feeling that they truly ever left Grayton Beach, after a 22year hiatus, they knew it was time to return to the heart and soul of S o u t h Wa l t o n . The KEY to creating rhythm and balance is in the movement of & the finish position of the feet. In most cases, players should start with equal weight on both feet, creating increased foot pressure on the back foot during the backswing, ending with the majority of the weight on the front foot at the finish.
