Dear Residents, We are very happy to share with you all of the progress and accomplishments that has happened at your wonderful community this past month! Highlights of completed projects include the resurfacing of the tennis/pickle ball courts, new line striping of stop lines/crosswalk for the safety of the community, getting the gorgeous waterfall fountain at our entrance back up and running, as well as the RFID (gate access stickers) distribution. We will continue to push forward in the upcoming month and we have some great projects to be completed. Behind the scenes we have been working diligently with Ron Wallace, your Vice President of the Board of Director’s, to get the new website up to date with all of your info in preparation of launching. The new website is very exciting for us and will be a great addition to the community. It is a much cleaner, more organized and user friendly option for everyone. We are currently one step away of having the new gate system operational and look forward to this transition as well. We are working closely with the recently formed and appointed Landscape Committee led by resident volunteer Harold Rudin to support and lead our Landscaping team to provide the community with the best possible quality and service by working together. We will be
keeping an eye on the Nature Trail drainage issues and monitor the results of drainage project installed near the entrance from Cedar Falls. The annual mulch refreshment will begin this month and most likely continue through the month of November until the project is complete. We are excited as this will really make an impact on the look of the community and our landscaping. We will be moving forward with including the refreshment of our Single Family homes. The Access team with the support of our Landscaping committee will oversee this project. Lastly, it is that time of year again, time for the annual budget. We have been meeting and working with the volunteers of the Finance Committee led by Sarah Kirkland and our community Treasurer, Wayne Barnard to come up with the proposed budget for 2017. There is such great value in having so much input into the process of the upcoming budget from our membership. Their time, talents, experience, dedication and patience while we work through the drafting process if beyond appreciated. Thank you to everyone that was able to make it out to the presentation by the Sherriff’s office and support the efforts of our Neighborhood Watch volunteers. There may not be much activity, which is of course a wonderful thing, but we always want
to be proactive and work together as a community to remove any and all opportunities for crime. With all of this great activity, we know that October 2016 will be another busy and successful month. We are looking forward to the outcome of all of our service teams at Southshore Falls, including our community volunteers’ hard work as we continue to move forward in keeping Southshore Falls a wonderful place to live!

Helping Hands Volunteers Our community is full of residents that like to pitch in make this an enjoyable community. All around the neighborhood you see many residents finding a way to contribute. Recently, the Helping Hands group was formed as an extension of the Welcome/Lifestyle Committee lead by Cheri Schumacher. Cheri says , “this group of residents are willing to help with various duties to execute Lifestyle planned events and are ready to “do – roll up their sleeves and pitch in.” Along with our staff you will be seeing these residents help in various ways. Recently they were the residents that organized the food tables for the Labor Day potluck. Along with the staff you saw them setting up, organizing, cooking, and cleaning up. As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.” We are proud to have these residents who serve as a positive role model for the SSF community and encourage residents to attend community social events. You will recognize them at future events. Look for the yellow “hands” badge and thank them for their contribution.

What’s Cooking at Southshore Falls It seems like there is a great interest in cooking in Southshore Falls. A cooking group was formed by Anne Fung to allow residents with this interest to meet. You can’t have too many cooks in the kitchen so now Cooking Group #2 has formed. Betty Leffue is leading this group that meets to share recipes and cooking techniques, along with visits to markets and restaurants to experience different cuisines. If you are interested grab your chef hat and contact Betty to learn more.

October 2016
BREAST CANCER AWARENESS October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, an annual campaign to raise awareness of breast cancer risks, the value of screening and early detection, and treatment options available to women and men who are diagnosed with one of the many forms of breast cancer. Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women around the world – with about 1.4 million new cases and 458,000 deaths a year. More than 249,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with invasive breast cancer every year, and nearly 41,000 die from the disease. Over the years, a loop of pink ribbon has come to symbolize breast cancer awareness, and today the image of a pink ribbon can be found emblazoned on thousands of products, from apparel to dishware to office supplies. But there's more to awareness than just wearing pink. Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women. Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that if you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often to get a screening mammogram. What Are the Symptoms? There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away. How Can I Lower My Risk? The main factors that influence your risk for breast cancer include being a woman, being older (most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older), and having changes in your breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2). Most women who get breast cancer have no known risk factors and no history of the disease in their families. There are things you can do to can help lower your breast cancer risk. The Know: BRCA tool can help you assess your risk of having changes in your BRCA genes. Although breast cancer screening cannot prevent breast cancer, it can help find breast cancer early, when it is easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about which breast cancer screening tests are right for you, and when you should have them. Fast Facts About Breast Cancer Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease. Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men. Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age. Page 17

From the President's Desk: What a great time to be a resident at Southshore Falls!!! As I walk around the community I can feel the buzz and excitement in the air. It hasn't been this electric in a long time. The positive vibes are catching on. Our residents are volunteering all over the community and what an impact they are making. Have you had a chance to see the completed waterfall. What an awesome job led by our own Chuck White and Brad with Access Management. They were very methodical and made sure every I was dotted and T crossed and what a wonderful outcome. It was well worth the wait. We can't thank you enough. And what about Wayne Jensen. We know him for his patriotic decorations at our summer parties, but the 9/11 tribute he organized was outstanding. Thank you Wayne, DJ Wayne, and all your fellow volunteers for such a wonderful and thoughtful tribute for 9/11. It was very moving and I was glad I could be a part of it. The Lifestyle / Welcome committee has helping hands, no really they do. A group of volunteers called Helping Hands assists the Lifestyle Committee at functions and parties. They add that extra effort which has made each event a success. We thank you! We have scouts for the Pond committee also, helping Louise and Ron keep an eye on our ever improving ponds and also keep Aquatics on their toes. The courts in the back are newly paved for pickle ball and tennis. The Nature Trail is starting to get drainage installed as we look to eliminate the standing water through out the trail. We are moving forward. Volunteers making not only an impact in the community, but making this community a better place to live. As President I can't thank all of our volunteers enough. I know there were probably some I missed but know you are very much appreciated. This community is taking off. There isn't anything we can't do when we work together as one community. .Full speed ahead. As always, I am proud to be a resident of Southshore Falls, but I am extremely proud and honored to be your President. Thank you!

COVENANTS CORNER October 2016 did you know….
Southshore Falls is a deed restricted community. A deed restricted community is where the community has a homeowner association that has rules and regulations pertaining to the use of land and the look of the neighborhood. Usually it is initiated by the developer. Most deed restricted communities require a homeowner association fee to continue the upkeep of the community. Each deed restricted community has different rules. Deed restrictions can include the size of the home allowed on the lot, paint colors for the exterior of the home, as well as law maintenance, landscaping, and some even regulate tree-cutting. Some communities do not allow the storage of campers, trailers, or cars that don’t run or vehicles with company names or logos on them. They can dictate what types of materials a fence can be made out of, or even not allow fences at all. Another restriction might regarding pets. Some will only allow one pet or limit the breed and size of the pet. Building additional structures on the lot such as a shed or gazebo can also be restricted. Some of the benefits of living in a deed restricted community are that amenities are often included. These can be anything from golfing, use of swimming pool, tennis courts, a fitness center, or even a club house. These amenities are owned by the members of the community and are common ground. The other benefit is that communities with deed restrictions maintain their value and are more desirable to potential buyers. It is important to be aware of the deed restrictions on a property before making an offer. If you are thinking of buying a home in a deed restricted community you will want to get a copy of the deed restrictions before you buy and read it over carefully. These can either be obtained from the seller or directly from Access Management. If you do not have a copy, please let Access Management know and they will email you a copy.
