South San Francisco and San Bruno Turbo Blower Dedication The City of South San Francisco is proud to announce the installation of a new high-efficiency Turbo Blower at the City of South San Francisco-San Bruno Water Quality Control Plant.

Article from WQCP

#NPWW Kevin Selfridge being recognized for his invaluable service to SSF Public Works.

The APG-Neuros Blower replaces a 250 HP centrifugal multi-stage blower. The blower is used to provide dedicated processed air to secondary treatment basins and allow for more efficient delivery of air to the treatment process. This was the 1,000th Turbo Blower installed in North America by APG-Neuros, a global leader in energy efficiency based in Montreal, Canada. To celebrate the installation, APG-Neuros CEO and President Omar Hammoud (pictured above left with Plant Superintendent Brian Schumaker, right) attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and presented both cities with commemorative plaques. It is anticipated that the annual savings for switching to the high-efficiency turbo blower will be up to $100,000. Both cities are thrilled to embrace cutting edge technology that supports energy efficiency and sustainability.

Brian McMinn, Director of Public Works, addressing the team before the barbecue/celebration.

Traffic Calming Pilot Program The City is embarking on a 9-month Traffic Calming Pilot Program. Speed pillows are being installed along Valverde Drive and Granada Drive. Speed pillows are modified speed humps that include wheel cutouts to allow large vehicles to pass unaffected, while reducing passenger car speeds. In addition, a speed table will be installed on Alta Vista Drive. Speed tables are mid-block traffic calming devises that raise the entire wheelbase of a vehicle to reduce its traffic speed. Speed tables are longer than speed humps and flat-topped, with a height of 3-3.5 inches and are often used on roads with typical residential speed limits.

In March 2016, the City held a community meeting that was coordinated and scheduled through the Avalon Brentwood Park Home Owner's Association. At the meeting, the community voiced their concerns and identified the most troublesome areas. The City began installing the speed pillows during the month of June 2016. The City will be collecting data to analyze the effects of the newly installed traffic calming devices. The City will be reaching out to the AvalonBrentwood Park Neighborhood again near the end of the pilot project to talk about the results and next steps.

Cold In Place Recycling (CIR) Street Rehabilitation Projects Over the past few months, many streets in South San Francisco have been resurfaced using a green technology called cold in place recycling. This process begins by grinding about 3 inches of existing pavement. Instead of being hauled away, the asphalt is recycled in place and then treated with a recycling agent. Next, a lift of 1.5" hot mix asphalt was applied and the material is compacted, rolled and sealed. By utilizing this innovative and green technology process, residents can now enjoy newly paved roads at: Allerton Avenue, Grandview Drive, and DNA Way. We are thrilled to report that we not only had the opportunity to reclaim materials to maintain our infrastructure but we also saw a 30% cost savings and have an anticipated 50% reduction of our greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions as compared with traditional pavement rehabilitation.
