Passengers picked up Two Passyunk Square residents were apprehended and charged for violently stabbing their cab driver. ■ By Amanda L. Snyder Review Managing Editor

fter taking two men to Queen Village, a cabbie was stabbed 11 times and robbed Monday. At 1:15 a.m., the 37-year-old cabbie, who was transporting the duo, pulled up to the 900 block of South Front Street, police said. After both exited, Alejandro Gonzalez, 22, of the 1100 block of South Ninth Street, allegedly seemed as if he was retrieving cash from his Luis A. Moreno wallet. Instead, Luis A. Moreno, 21, of the same block, is believed to have stabbed the cabbie through the driver’s side window. Gonzalez supposedly joined in, but the taxi driver pulled the knife from him and started to attack Gonzalez until Moreno allegedly stabbed him in the head. The cabbie said, “Take the money,” Gonzalez allegedly took $205 and fled, with Moreno, west on an unknown street, police said. The taxi driver headed north a few blocks to South Street where he spotted police, who transported him in stable condition to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, according to police. He was treated there for superficial wounds to the left side of his head and chest, left arm, right hand and front of his neck. A short while later, police spotted Moreno walking through Jefferson Square Park, 300 Washington Ave., police said. He is believed to have tossed a knife as they approached him. Police recovered the object and arrested Moreno, who allegedly had bloody hands and a cut on his right forearm. Police arrested Gonzalez at his home at 1:15 a.m. Tuesday. The pair was charged with attempted murder, robbery, aggravated assault, conspiracy and related offenses, according to court records. Moreno and Gonzalez are being held on $100,000 and $150,000 bail, respectively, which had not been posted by press time. Gonzalez’s mugshot was not available at press time.

Backseat stranger A woman was raped in the back of a car in Fairmount and then dropped off at a Bella Vista intersection Saturday evening. A 24-year-old woman hopped into a

white sedan that she thought was a taxi at 6:30 p.m. on the 2200 block of Spring Garden Street, however, there was a man already in the backseat, according to police. That man assaulted her and took $41 before pushing the victim out of the vehicle at 10th and Catharine streets. The man in the backseat was described as black with a dark complexion, in his mid-20s, thin, having short hair and an unshaven face and wearing jeans. A detailed description of the driver was not available at press time. To report information, call Special Victims Unit at 215-685-3251, text PPDTIP (773847) or visit phillypolice.com/forms.

Familial frustration After police knocked down the door to a Whitman home, officers found a son assaulting his father. Authorities responded to a person screaming on the 400 block of Durfor Street at 7:08 p.m. Sunday, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. Police forced their way into the residence through a locked front door and allegedly saw Yeary Chau, 30, of the same block, standing over his 58-year-old father with a knife in his hand. Officers arrested Chau, who was charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, terroristic threats and related offenses, according to court records. Chau’s bail, which had not been posted by press time, was set at $1 million. His patriarch was unconscious with severe head trauma and bleeding profusely from his head, back and shoulders, Tolliver said. A medic unit transported him to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in critical condition. It was unclear what prompted the attack.

Afternoon carjacking A woman was ripped from her car in Hawthorne last week. A 23-year-old woman was in her 2008 Acura MDX at a stop sign on the 1300 block of Fitzwater Street at 4:07 p.m. Aug. 29 when an unknown man walked in front of her auto, Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. A second man then opened her door and pulled to the ground and hopped in. The other man got in the passenger’s side, and the duo fled westbound on Fitzwater and southbound on Broad Street. continued on next page
