After a pickup truck allegedly ran a stop sign, a detective’s car was almost sideswiped and the two detectives then allegedly were confronted by the driver and passenger of the other vehicle Saturday evening. En route to a crime scene at Fourth and Wharton streets, the detectives were traveling east on Porter Street at 7:25 p.m., Detective Danielle Tolliver of South Detective Division said. At the stop sign at South 16th Street, a 1999 black Chevy Silverado pickup going north on South 16th allegedly ran through the traffic sign and almost slammed into the detectives’ car. Mario Pavoni, 21, of the 2600 block of South Chadwick Street, and his passenger, Louis Scartoli, 21, of the 2600 block of South Colorado Street, allegedly exited the vehicle as the detectives stepped out of their vehicle and identified themselves as police officers, Tolliver said. Pavoni and Scartoli allegedly yelled and cursed at the detectives, who repeatedly ordered them back into their truck, Tolliver said. The two refused and Pavoni allegedly shoved one detective. The detective attempted to arrest Pavoni, but he allegedly kicked and scratched the detective, Tolliver said. The other detective restrained Scartoli, who allegedly pushed the other detective. The detectives did not seek treatment. Both men were arrested upon arrival of police backup. Police recovered narcotics from Pavoni’s car and $595 in cash from Pavoni, Tolliver said. Both were charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and resisting arrest, while Pavoni also was cited for possession.

Police stopped the man they believed to be responsible for the shots fired — Terrance Wade, 19, of the 800 block of Winton Street — on the 900 block of South Fourth, Tolliver said. However, police did not recover the gun. There has been an ongoing dispute between rival groups in the neighborhood, Lt. Joe Dougherty of South Detectives said. Wade is believed to have shot in the direction of a party celebrating the birthday of the late-Akiem Smith, who was gunned down July 19. Wade was charged with criminal conspiracy, aggravated assault, criminal mischief, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and firearm violations.
