Meet the most dedicated teacher in all of Philadelphia, Sally Avitalle By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

TOM BECK/South Philly Review

The Review spoke to Avitalle on the day she and the St. Monica’s staff celebrated her 50th year of teaching at the school. Members of her family along with various teachers - and, of course, the children in her class - all took time out of their day to celebrate. Avitalle wasn’t quite expecting all the fanfare. hen Beth Coleman was a firstgrader at St. Monica Roman Catholic School, she remembers feeling lucky. That’s because she got the cool teacher, Mrs. Avitalle. “She was a fun teacher,” said Coleman. “I still have the present she gave me from first grade. It was an Easter egg that has my name on it that she hand-wrote with glitter.” Gina Mulvihill wasn’t so lucky. “I didn’t have her, but she was the teacher everybody wanted,” said Mulvihill. “I got one of the sisters, and I cried for a couple days because I wanted Mrs. Avitalle.” Both Coleman and Mulvihill went on to become not only graduates of St. Monica’s, but teachers there. Lo and behold, Sally Avitalle was still teaching at the time. In fact, she’s still teaching now. “It makes me happy to hear it,” Avitalle told SPR. “Why they all want me, I don’t know. Is it the experience maybe because I’ve been here so long? I don’t know. I like to think it’s because I’m a good teacher.” The Review spoke to Avitalle on the day she and the St. Monica staff celebrated her 50th year of teaching at the school. Members of her family along with various teachers - and, of course, the children in her class - all took time out of their day to celebrate. Avitalle wasn’t quite expecting all the fanfare. Hi, my name is Skippy

I

’m looking for a calm, adultonly home that’s willing to harness my great qualities and give me the opportunity to grow and learn in a positive way. I’m about 3 years old and I’m always eager to learn more things. My name, Skippy, suits me well – I’m a little firecracker of endless love and energy. I already know that I love my crate, I am slow and steady with introductions, and I love to spend time with other dogs. A fellow dog in the house would be great so that I can channel my physical energy in a positive, constructive and enjoyable way. Agility and tricks classes would also be a fun, beneficial way to further develop my talents and energy. Healthcare for pets just became a little more accessible for residents in South Philadelphia By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

A

large general practice urgent care pet facility with multiple specialists will open on Washington Avenue this summer, providing South Philly residents a closer and more convenient option for their four-legged friends. The Washington Ave. Animal Hospital, which is owned by veterinarian Pete Lands, will offer emergency care for pets seven days a week to an area he sees as underserved. “In a city with 1.5 million people, we have 100,000 people that live within a 1-mile radius and there is really nothing else around,” said Lands, a 33-year-old Point Breeze resident. “Living there allowed me to see the development that’s going on there in South Philly, and in particular Washington Avenue. And after doing some due diligence and some research, I could see that a veterinary clinic was 100 percent needed for South Philly residents.” Lands said the animal hospital is scheduled to open in either June or July at 1920 Washington Ave. Lands said he has signed a lease, hired architects and contractors, and received funding. The one-floor, 5,200-square-foot facility will have seven examination rooms, a full intensive care unit, two surgery suites and a spacious lobby. “I think it’s going to be nice to be able to provide the community with what I feel is excellent quality medicine without a big corporation dictating what we have to do or what products we have to use,” Lands said. “I’m able to make all of those decisions, not only for the best interests of the pet, but also the owner.” Lands said the outside of the building will have a modern brick facade to match the ongoing development on Washington Avenue. “We want to make sure we match what’s going on on our street,” he said. “We want to blend in, but also stick out with our business.” The practice will include a veterinary ophthalmologist, and offer eye surgery and regular vision appointments. It will also employ a board-certified surgeon and anesthesiologist. “Not only will we have the ability to do the general practice urgent care but we will also have specialists there on day one,” Lands said. Lands, a Linwood, New Jersey native, graduated from the University of Maryland and graduated cum laude from St. George’s Univer-

sity, before completing his fourth year of clinical at Ohio State University, earning his degree in veterinary medicine. He completed his internship at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. He has recently worked as the Director of Emergency and Critical Care at the Saint Francis Veterinary Center of South Jersey and currently travels to animal hospitals within a twohour commute on a per-diem basis. Prior to all of that, he volunteered at the Humane Society in Atlantic City, where he fell in love with the profession. “I’m this young, wide-eyed, 17-year-old kid and they throw me in with the veterinarian who has been doing this forever,” Lands recalled. “And I was like, I have to do this forever, for the rest of my life.” Lands said he is looking to fill out a staff of about 12 to 15 full-time employees. “We need a full team of really motivated veterinarians, vet technicians, receptionists and additional staff and we’re actively hiring now as needed for the right candidates,” he said. Lands said a website is under construction but interested applicants can reach out to him through Facebook and Instagram @WashingtonAveVet or via email WashingtonAveVet@ gmail.com. He also plans to form partnerships with local animal rescues to help with controlling the pet population. “I want to give back to the community in any way that I can,” Lands said. “We know that there’s a lot of feral cats that live in the South Philly community and a lot of people are trying their best to trap them, neuter them and release them and we’d love to play a big role in helping that process as well as helping with the shelters.”

Academy of Palumbo’s Zheng a top-rated chess player By Mark Zimmaro

T

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

immy Zheng is a quiet competitor. But don’t let his soft-spoken nature fool you into thinking you’ve got one over on him. In fact, he’s already set his

trap. Zheng is a senior at the Academy of Palumbo charter school, 11th and Catharine streets, and is lauded as one of the best high school chess players in the city. And he’s accomplished that feat in a short amount of time after a long absence from playing the game. “I technically started playing chess when I was little but then I stopped playing,” Zheng said. “After my sophomore year, I started playing again.” In just two short years, Zheng has risen from a rook to a king as he currently resides in first place individually in the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League after the fourth and final tournament of the regular season, which was held on Jan. 28 at the School District of Philadelphia. The Academy of Palumbo also earned the top seed heading into the playoffs and will earn a free pass through the wildcard round on Feb. 11 and will compete in the semifinals on Feb. 20. The Griffins have formed a tight group of friends that challenge each other during practices and online. Teammate Brandon Luk was responsible for bringing Zheng onto the roster and it’s been all chess, all the time for the Griffins. “There was really no one to play with,” Zheng recalled before he joined the team. “So I had less interest in it. But I had Brandon invite me to play again, and it brought the interest back. Now I have more friends that play.” Those friends also include teammates Bobby Fishburn-Spivery, Andy Nguyen, Timothy Sontono, Son Luu and Mythi Nguyen, who were all ranked highly in the league as of last week. They

T

all get along together really well. “There’s a good camaraderie,” Academy of Palumbo chess coach Ed Myers said. “Generally, we’ve been able to field a solid team and the distribution of talent is pretty even with the exception of Timmy, who is a super player. For that reason, we’ve been able to remain in first place.” The PCSL is the competitive arm of After School Activities Partnership Chess, with more than 50 teams and 500 youth competing at the elementary, middle and high school levels. There are 112 high school students listed on the league standings, with Zheng sitting at the top. “He’s very dedicated to learning the game and studying strategy and tactics,” Myers said. “He works at it very hard and spends a lot of time online playing chess, where a lot of students build up their knowledge base. It’s really gratifying to see how the students teach each other.” Zheng has other talents as well. He takes part in robotics and coding club at school and he plans to study computer science at Drexel University next year. He’s hoping to play chess next year as a club sport for the Dragons. But right now, improving among his peers is the main focus for Zheng, who enjoys the tactical side of defeating his foes. “I like the tactics of it,” Zheng said. “It feels good when you figure out a tactic that helps you win. It’s exciting.” Zheng carries a United States Chess Federation rating of 1654, which is also highest in the league. Players are rated and matched up against other players of a similar caliber to keep games competitive. Zheng plays against the best of the best on a daily basis. And he quietly enjoys the challenge. “He’s very quiet and very unassuming but it didn’t take long for us to recognize that he was an exceptional talent,” Myers said. “He’s been a great asset to our team.”

MARK ZIMMARO/South Philly Review

Academy of Palumbo senior Timmy Zheng is the top-rated player in the Philadelphia Scholastic Chess League. The Griffins are the top-seeded team in the city heading into the playoffs.

Grad Hospital neighbors green-light the largest and final part of development on former chocolate factory site By Tom Beck

A

SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

t the most recent SOSNA meeting, residents of Graduate Hospital supported the final part of developer Ori Feibush’s plan to build a six-story, 256-unit apartment building on the former site of the Frankford Chocolate Factory, located at 2101 Washington Ave., by a margin of 56-9, with one abstention. SOSNA’s zoning committee voted unanimously, 5-0, in favor of it. The project includes a 23,000-square-foot space for an Aldi supermarket on the ground floor of the eastern half of the project and a 13,000-square-foot space for a CVS on the western half. An underground parking garage with 120 spaces, 70 of which will be made available for lease by residents of the building or the neighborhood, will sit below the commercial spaces. According to Feibush, the remaining 50 spots will be for Aldi customers during the store’s hours of operation (they’ll be available for use by the community outside of Aldi’s operating hours, however). An open-to-the-public greenspace sits on the north end of the lot. The parcel is the last of a three-parcel project to be approved. The first two parcels were green-lighted in late 2018. One of those parcels consists of 40 townhomes along Kimball Street to the north of 2101 Washington Ave., which are currently in construction. The other, located one

block over at 2201 Washington Ave., includes 21 townhomes, a building with 38 units and a second building with 51 units. The refusals for the project stemmed from the fact that Feibush’s residential and commercial mix of uses for the lot didn’t fit the city’s zoning code, which has the lot zoned for industrial use. “It is rare that we get to stand before you with a project that can truly transform a neighborhood,” said Feibush before SOSNA voters. “Because of that, this project truly was designed by consensus. A lot of different participants had the opportunity to provide feedback to this project. We’ve worked very, very hard over a long period of time rewriting the script multiple times to incorporate a ton of that feedback.” Members from SOSNA’s zoning committee agreed, noting that the project looks much different than it did when it was first proposed. “Believe me, this project does not look like it did in the beginning,” said the chair of that committee, Murray Spencer. “The Architectural Review Committee likes it, the SOSNA Zoning Committee likes it, we hope you all like it, too.” Spencer also noted that SOSNA had finalized a community benefits agreement with Feibush’s company, OCF Realty. Included in the CBA are a minimum of 26 affordable units (this means it must be affordable by residents who make 60 percent of Philadelphia’s average median income) and extending the sidewalk width to 11 feet. However, making the sidewalk wider isn’t yet set

TEACHER: Celebrated 50th year <<Continued from page 1 “I had heard that they were going to present flowers to me at the end of Mass, but that’s the extent of it,” said Avitalle. “I had no idea my family was called, I didn’t know Action News was coming, I didn’t know you were coming!” Avitalle tried her hardest to downplay her achievement. “I’m a person who doesn’t like a big fuss,” she said. “Every time they mention it, I say, ‘Look, it’s only 50 years, it’s no big deal.’ ” She also tried her hardest to downplay the rword. “I don’t want to retire,” she said. “Everybody keeps saying you can’t work forever, and I know that. But I’m not ready yet.” She says she’s got at least two more years in her. “She’s very humble,” said Mulvihill. “We try to model ourselves after her.” Avitalle, who grew up in Southwest Philly as the second oldest of seven children, started teaching at St. Monica when she was 18. Previously, she worked as a cashier at Uncle Nick’s Supermarket, located at 56th and Chester in Kingsess-

ing. One day, a few friends Avitalle graduated with walked in and mentioned the job opening to her. At this point, Avitalle was settled into her cashier job and wasn’t thinking much of leaving. But she loved children and always wanted to be either a schoolteacher (“or a hairdresser,” she said). “It made me start thinking again,” she said. “So I applied to the Archdiocese.” On the day of her interview, which was in February 1968, Avitalle was told that if she got the job, she wouldn’t be needed until September when the next school year started. After her interview, she headed off to Uncle Nick’s to work a shift from 3 to 11 p.m. At 4 p.m., her mother got a phone call at the house from somebody at St. Monica asking for her. When she called back the next day, Avitalle found out she not only got the job, but she was actually needed in two weeks not in September. But she didn’t immediately take the job. They offered her $65 a week, which was a steep pay cut from the $100 a week the supermarket was paying her. “So I keep thinking, should I? Shouldn’t I?” she said. “I sat in on a teacher and watched her

in stone since it requires a City Council ordinance. “We’re working with Councilman [Kenyatta] Johnson’s office to get that done,” said Spencer. Also included in the CBA, according to SOSNA executive director Nicole Koedyker, are public bike racks and private bike storage, a preference for 35 percent of building contractors to be certified minority- and women-owned businesses, employment preference for individuals living in the neighborhood and surrounding ZIP codes, efforts to work with the Department of Streets to install protected bike lanes on Washington Avenue, unobstructed windows that provide at least 85 percent visibility for commercial tenants and ADA-accessible infrastructure on the property. The biggest concern from residents was the parking issues they felt the project would create, which was addressed by Feibush. “If we could flip a switch and get another 100 parking spaces, we would,” he said. “But we could only do that at the detriment of some really important features we put in here, like an enormous public space, a fully green building [and] affordable housing.” The project was set to go in front of the city’s Civic Design Review Board on Feb. 4 at 1 p.m.

Renderings of the project include a 23,000-square-foot space for an Aldi supermarket on the ground floor of the eastern half of the project and a 13,000-square-foot space for a CVS on the western half. teach. Then I went home and I thought, you know what, this might be a chance that I’ll never get. I can always get a job in a supermarket again, but maybe I won’t be offered another teaching job. So I took it, and I’ve been here ever since.” Avitalle’s older sister, Sue Perkins, said that she and her sisters would always play school. “Especially in the summer when we were not in school,” said Perkins. “We all did that growing up.” Around her family, Avitalle has actually earned the nickname “Saint Monica.” “I think in life you meet people who say, ‘Oh, they’re so devoted to their job,’ ” said Avitalle’s younger sister, Linda. “There’s nobody like my sister that’s been devoted to their job. When I tell you she doesn’t take a day off, she doesn’t take a day off. This is her life. This school is her life, I don’t think she has any plans of retiring. I really don’t. As long as her knees don’t give out, she’ll be teaching.” Currently, Avitalle teaches kindergarten. But she started out teaching third grade for 10 years. After her first 10 years of teaching, she took a two-year break to have her first two children and came back teaching first grade, which is the grade she’s taught for most of her career. In fact, she’s taught every grade from kindergarten to third

grade during her time at St. Monica. During that time, a lot has changed. The class sizes have gone from 70-plus kids to about 20, technology has taken over the world and the science behind behavioral conditions such as oppositional defiant disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder has come forward, which teachers have had to adjust to. “You never heard of that when you first started teaching,” said Avitalle. “You have to be more understanding, and a lot of times you have to modify the curriculum or accommodate them in different ways whereas years ago you taught the class all the same way.” No more my-way-or-the-highway. “That’s how it was years ago with the discipline with the Catholic school, but not anymore,” she said. “You gotta be there for them, you really really do. And you have to be understanding and patient.” While it’s clear that Avitalle loves spending time with children, she loves her coworkers, too. “As long as I’ve been teaching at St. Monica’s, the teachers have had a nice rapport with one another, and I think that’s why I like coming to school every day,” she said. “We’re each others’ friends. We have each others’ back, and that’s important.”

Answering the Mail T

O MY READERS: You are invited to send me letters. Promise I’ll answer it. Sometimes I’ll publish your letter and my reply, but only if you sign your name with a valid address. If you’re too young to know what a letter is, ask your parents. I received the following letter, dated Jan. 12, 2020, from Mr. Domenick Lazzaro Jr., who’s identified himself as a Republican committeeman, 2nd Ward, 24th Division. “Dear Mr. Cardella: President Donald J. Trump is driving you crazy, that’s why you cannot stand him. So, get over it that he was elected and that we only have one president, and that he will be re-elected in 2020. So, if you do not accept this, then you and your liberal and Hollywood friends should think about leaving our country, but I know you will not do that.” Domenick Lazzaro Jr. Dear Mr. Lazzaro: My wife, Fran, also thinks I’m “crazy” and wonders if husbands can be replaced under the 25th Amendment. Your crowd put a name on it. I’m suffering from Trump Derangement Syndrome. And my medical plan doesn’t cover it. I complained to my doctor. He said, “Welcome to the club.” My doctor advised me to lay off watching the news for at least a month and see if that made me feel better. But after a month, I recently tuned into the Impeachment Hearings just as Trump’s legal team argued in his defense. The result is that I’ve had a major relapse — my doctor forbade me to read any letters from readers, but since you took the time to write, I figured that I could ignore his advice. You advise me to “get over it.” I’m impressed that you’re quoting Mick Mulvaney, but geez, there’s so much to get over. I’m still working on getting over Trump separating children from their families at the border. Rumor has it that one kid said to his buddy, as they were being led away, “I told you we should’ve claimed we were fetuses. We woulda had a better shot.” I’m not over some comments he made before ever becoming a political candidate, like having the right to grab a woman by the genitals. And when he questioned whether our previous president was born in the United States. Maybe Trump didn’t know that Hawaii had been admitted to the union. More than 50 years earlier. PEPTO-BISMOL doesn’t make a size big enough to get me over Trump’s crap, if you’ll pardon the expression. See CARDELLA, page 9>>

LE T TERS TO THE EDITOR Speed cameras are a bad idea Driving Roosevelt Boulevard is akin to taking a toll road. The media reported about the mess that red light cameras made in the city. Now we have speed cameras handled by the same groups. If speed limits were posted at the 85th percentile, then there would be nobody to ticket. Since money is the motivation, that will never be done. Things like making yellow lights longer will also not be done. Many free or low-cost fixes exist. A road like Roosevelt may be a challenging situation for guaranteeing accurate speed readings. I also wonder about errors, as Maryland areas had quite a few. Many of the incidents on this road were oddities, like drag racing, people rushing to hospitals, crashes in the wee hours of the morning, etc. How can ticketing weeks later stop these events? How many vulnerable road users caused crashes, too? Lawbreaking while walking and bicycling is common. The work-zone speed cameras also should

not be used. There needs to be better engineering there, also. James Sikorski Jr. National Motorists Association

On a clear night, you can see Venus The brilliant planet Venus has been seen in the dark southwestern sky over my Passyunk Crossing street. First of all, I am not an astronomer, but I did teach science in grade school for years. One of our topics was the solar system. I know Venus when I see her. She is the easiest of the planets to observe with the naked eye. Also, during that time, as a volunteer Latin teacher, I taught the students a cleaned-up version of the mythology behind the Roman names of the planets. They represent basically a dysfunctional family. According to the ancient Romans, the earth goddess, Gaia or Terra, and the sky god Uranus became divine grandparents. Uranus ruled the universe. One of their offspring was the Titan Saturnus {Saturn}. Using a powerful scythe, Saturn defeated his father Ura-

nus and took power over the universe. The Romans celebrated his feast, "Saturnalia," in late December. The figure of old Father Time carrying a scythe is actually a depiction of Saturn. Saturn was afraid his own children would do the same to him that he did to his father, so he swallowed them as soon as they were born. When Jupiter was born, his mother Rhea was determined to save him. So she covered a rock in a baby blanket and gave it to Saturn to eat. Meanwhile, baby Jupiter was raised in secret by nymphs who fed him the nectar of the gods from a cornucopia {horn of plenty}. He grew up and easily overpowered his father. One version of the story is that their mother first gave Saturn something to make him throw up the children who joined their brother in the defeat of Daddy. Another version has Jupiter cutting him open and releasing his undigested brothers and sisters. As a teacher of young children, of course, I left out the gory details. So Jupiter took over as Ruler of the Universe. He made his sister, Juno, Queen of the

<<Continued from page 8 I’m not out of touch with reality. I realize that Trump got elected (I went through five boxes of DOLLAR STORE tissues the night of the election), but he DID get 3 million fewer votes than Hillary. I think that would have called for some humility. Do you do novenas to the Electoral College? You should. Regarding your prediction that Trump will get re-elected in 2020, I defer. I myself predicted that Hillary would beat Trump by a landslide in 2016 and what did that get me? A letter from you. My advice is don’t get overconfident. Maybe you’re old enough to remember Tom Dewey. Truman beat it. Just don’t tell the Chicago Tribune that printed the headline DEWEY BEATS TRUMAN. Because of that upset, David McCullough wote a best-selling biography of him and Harry’s daughter, Margaret, got some expensive piano lessons. Wouldn’t be that big an upset if Trump lost in November. It happens. Even Tom Brady loses once in a while. We’ve both seen Tom Brady. And let’s face it, Mr. Lazzaro, Trump is no Tom Brady. You’ve asked me to accept that Trump is president, and I’ve accepted it as well as you probably accepted Barack Obama being president for eight years. Obama? The guy your crowd complained about when he wore a tan suit. Yeah, the one Trump claimed must’ve been an affirmative action grad from Harvard. You folks accepted it very gracefully, as I remember. Yes, I’m being sarcastic, although I’m sometimes accused of being sardonic, also. I must confess that I’m trying to figure out why you think I have “Hollywood” friends to

leave the country with. Did you spot me dining at the Four Seasons with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga? I thought my disguise would keep my socializing with movie stars a secret. I wore a very chic Jennifer Lawrence outfit that night. My ruse apparently didn’t work, but you have to admit I look great in apricot chintz. I’m not buying your “love it or leave it” request. Brad and Gaga have to make their own decision. But look at the bright side. What fun is it to be a Republican committeeman if there’s only one political party? Oh, you’ve found that out living in Philadelphia. Sorry. Thanks for forwarding my column to the White House. I hope Pompeo doesn’t force ME to pick out Ukraine on a map. I can’t do it. Do you think Trump can do it? Sincerely, Tom A few weeks ago, I received an unsigned letter from someone who claimed to represent a large group of Italian-Americans in South Philadelphia. The writer accused me of disrespecting my ethnic background by criticizing the president. Note: The closest Trump has been to the Italian culture is that he may once or twice have eaten a cannoli at Mar-a-Lago. The cannoli was probably filled with cottage cheese. Me? I’m from the “Pelosi” wing of Italian-Americans. She’s smart, has the right values, is the leader of her party — and she knows KFC doesn’t qualify as a good Sunday dinner. •• Follow Tom Cardella on Facebook before the President finds out about him.

Gods. He put his brother Neptune in charge of the sea and horses. Then he appointed his brother, Pluto, god of the underworld. I know we do not recognize Pluto anymore as a planet, but at the time the name fit a cold, dark and lifeless world. At least Jupiter did not try to kill his children. He later became the father of speedy messenger Mercury, war god Mars and magnificent Venus. So the order of the planets from the closest to the sun remains: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn....and a dwarf world called Pluto. Venus is the brightest and closest of all the planets to earth. The story of her birth is fascinating. The ancients believed she was born from sea foam. I understand why. Years ago, I was visiting Long Beach Island, New Jersey with my husband Stanley. One cloudless evening, we were sitting at an outdoor bar next to the beach. Suddenly, I saw what looked like a bright star or tiny moon rising from the ocean.

It rose slowly into the black sky. I turned to the bartender, who also happened to be a teacher, and asked, "Is that what I think it is?" He answered, "Yes, that's Venus." So I had the wonderful pleasure of observing Venus, goddess of love and beauty, rising from the sea - a vision that has inspired artists and storytellers for ages. Since about the middle of January, Venus has been rising over South Philly. We have had many cloudy nights when she has not been visible, but on that clear evening, she was there in our western sky in all her beauty and brilliance. She usually follows the sun, so she is in the east in the morning and in the west around sunset. Poetically, the words for Friday in the romance languages: French {Vendredi}, Italian {Venerdi} and Spanish {Viernes) honor Venus. But I will be looking for her on any clear evening all week long. South Philly City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson indicted by feds Johnson, who along with his wife was charged with two counts of honest services wire fraud, has maintained his innocence

T

By Tom Beck SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

he Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania announced last Wednesday that Philadelphia City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson was one of four people charged in a 22-count indictment alleging a wide ranging racketeering conspiracy. In the indictment, Johnson and his wife, Dawn Chavous, allegedly received payments in excess of $66,000 in exchange for Johnson using his public office to take official actions to benefit the CEO of Universal Community Homes, Abdur Rahim Islam, and its CFO, Shahied Dawan. Universal Community Homes is a subsidiary of Universal Companies, which is a nonprofit that owns several charter schools in South, West and North Philadelphia. It’s owned by longtime Philadelphia songwriter and music producer Ken Gamble. Johnson, who along with his wife was charged with two counts of honest services wire fraud, has maintained his innocence and called federal prosecutors “overzealous.” “First, let me be clear: I am innocent,” Johnson, who is not resigning, said in a statement. “I did nothing wrong. I am the victim of overzealous federal prosecutors who have spent the last five years looking for something to charge me with. If charged with any crime, I will be pleading not guilty.” If convicted as charged, Johnson and Chavous face 40 years’ imprisonment and a $500,000 fine, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The whole investigation has “been nothing but intimidation and bullying from the U.S. Attorney’s Office,” Johnson said at a post- indictment news conference. “It makes no sense for me to work as hard as I have...to throw it all away for some alleged backroom deal.” According to the indictment, the charges stem from criminal schemes orchestrated by Islam and Dawan through Universal Companies that included thousands of dollars in bribe payments to public officials and the misappropriation of hundreds of thousands of dollars from Universal. “It all boils down to this: The indictment charges that two businessmen wanted a corrupt advantage,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams. “They wanted to pay to play, and the indictment charges that they found willing partners here in Phila-

delphia. City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson and his wife, Dawn Chavous.” Williams said that Chavous, who operates Chavous Consulting, used her consulting business to enter “into a sham consulting agreement” to receive payments from Islam and Dawan for her husband. The indictment alleges that Universal owned the property on which the closed Royal Theater sits, on the 1500 block of South Street, and they’d been trying to sell “for years,” according to Williams. “The property became dilapidated,” she added. “A blight on the neighborhood.” In May 2013, Williams said, a member of the community filed an action to take control away from Universal in order to rehabilitate the property and end the blight. That same month, according to Williams, Islam arranged for a political fundraiser for Johnson’s reelection campaign, and Universal Companies entered into a contractual agreement with Chavous, hiring her business, Chavous Consulting. “The indictment alleges that this consulting agreement was a sham - that Chavous did very little work for Universal and that the arrangement was simply a way for Universal to funnel bribe payments to Johnson,” said Williams. “In fact, within a matter of months...Johnson is alleged to have pursued zoning changes for the Royal Theater that would save Universal’s bottom line.” The indictment also alleges that Universal purchased properties at 1309-1313 Bainbridge St. years earlier for $3 under a redevelopment authority contract, which required Universal to build on the land. “Under the contract, Universal was required to complete construction within 18 months or face the prospect of reversion back to the city,” said Williams. “The indictment alleges that these parcels, under Universal’s ownership, nonetheless remained undeveloped for nine years, strewn with trash, again a blight on the neighborhood.” As a result, Williams said, the city began the process of reversion in 2014. “This is when things are alleged to have changed,” said Williams. “In January 2014, Dawn Chavous is alleged to have contacted defendant Islam and warned him that Philadelphia intended to revert the property. In that same month, it is alleged that Chavous received an $18,000 payment from Universal.” Williams said that soon after the payment, Johnson indicated to a city official that he would not support the reversal. She said he then utilized councilmanic prerogative - “a custom in Philadelphia that allows individual city councilpersons to influence nearly all

Councilman Kenyatta Johnson land use decisions in their district” - to stall the reversion process. “The indictment alleges that this resulted in Universal being able to continue owning its properties, valued between $2.6 million and $3.5 million,” said Williams. “In both instances - the Royal Theater and the 13th and Bainbridge properties - Universal is alleged not only to have silenced attempts to take away and rehabilitate their blighted properties, but also to have profited greatly from those properties thanks to Kenyatta Johnson’s efforts at the same time Universal was paying Johnson’s wife, Dawn Chavous.” Williams said that Universal “was hijacked by Abdul Rahim Islam and Shahied Dawan, and turned into a criminal enterprise in order to commit these crimes of corruption and greed with the support and necessary participation of Kenyatta Johnson” and his wife. She noted that Universal itself had not been charged with any crimes. Last Wednesday’s allegations mean that Johnson is now one of two city councilmembers - the other being 6th District Councilman Bobby Henon - to be under federal indictment. FBI Special Assistant Christian Zajac, who spoke at the news conference, said that Philadelphia’s FBI field office has “a higher percentage of agents and task force officers working corruption than any other office in the FBI.” He added: “That speaks to our commitment to ridding this city of this scourge, and unfortunately it highlights the magnitude of the problem in our city.”

More money for Schuylkill River Trail On the heels of a $1.48 million grant awarded earlier this year to the Schuylkill River Trail, state Rep. Jordan Harris, House Democratic whip, announced an additional $800,000 in grant funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority for the Christian to Crescent segment of the trail. “The completion of the Christian to Crescent segment will finalize a fully off-road pathway between Center City and Bartram’s Garden, which will connect multiple neighborhoods and allow community members to travel along the river in a relaxed setting,” Harris said. “I look forward to this project being finished and members of the community being able to fully enjoy this new greenway and move more freely between the unique neighborhoods Philadelphia has to offer.” The $800,000 grant is from the Commonwealth Financing Authority’s Multimodal Transportation Fund Program, which provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure safe and reliable transportation for Pennsylvanians. This funding specifically will go toward construction of a cable-supported bridge structure and related connections to existing on-land trail segments on either side of the structure as well as a bridge and ramp near the midpoint of the center span of the bridge structure to connect this route to South Philadelphia neighborhoods. The Schuylkill River Trail is a 128-mile, multi-use trail running along the Schuylkill River, with trail segments in various stages of development.

Lumsden shouldering the load for Audenried By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

N

aja Lumsden has plenty of reasons to smile. The Universal Audenried Charter High School junior basketball player is having a tremendous season on the court and she aspires to be an orthodontist someday after college, following a family tradition of dental care. One way or another, the Rockets’ leading scorer is bracing for big things. “My mom is a dentist and she’s been talking to me

a lot about teeth,” Lumsden said. “I have braces now and I really like what they’ve been doing when I go there so I ask a lot of questions.” Her thirst for knowledge is transparent on the basketball court, too. In a season when the Rockets faced several injuries and adversity, Lumsden has shouldered even more responsibility. On pace to hit 1,000 points most likely early next year, Lumsden has been a bright spot as the Rockets (5-14) head into a crucial point of their season. Lumsden is usually the leading scorer of her team, averaging about 23 points per game, but her ability to integrate her teammates into the offense has yielded solid results.

“With Naja, it’s all about trusting her teammates,” Audenried girls basketball coach Kevin Slaughter said. “She doesn’t have to always take over. The ball will come back to her. She sometimes likes to ‘James Harden it’ and take those far away 3’s but she’s learning to use her teammates more.” She’s sharing the ball more, but Lumsden is still creeping up on a thousand points, having recently surpassed the 800 mark, and was at 375 for the season following a 61-45 setback to Pennsbury on Friday night. Lumsden would be just the second female from Audenried to achieve that big milestone. “I’m determined to get there,” Lumsden said. “To only be the second girl at Audenried would be really special.” The Rockets have been hit with injuries to key players and had another player transfer out, which has set them behind their season goals. “It’s been hard,” Slaughter said. “Being without all these big players has been really tough. But we’re trying to finish strong heading into the playoffs. Lumsden has seen positives from the team, which has the ability to go on big runs. They trailed highlytouted Pennsbury, 20-3, before closing the gap to a

single basket. Lumsden scored 16 points that night, and the Rockets received double-figure contributions from Destiny Epps and Jenelle Ransom, who netted 10 apiece. “It’s been a little tough but we’ve been fighting through it,” Lumsden said. “We just continue to grow as a team and get better and better every day.” Lumsden has been involved with the school’s drama club and will have a small part in an upcoming show. She joins the club after basketball practice and still finds the time to work the treadmill at the gym. She shows that kind of determination each time the ball is in her hands. “Her skill set might be her best attribute but she really has a nose for the basket,” Slaughter said. “She can stroke the ball and she’s a true competitor. We’re really lucky to have her because there are some games when she’s the only one scoring.” Lumsden is hoping more help will be available next year as the Rockets continue to put in the work for a brighter future. “It’s a building year,” she said. “We’re just trying to lay down some groundwork and be even better next year.”

The Neumann-Goretti High School girls basketball team hosted West Catholic on Tuesday, Jan. 28, in South Philadelphia. The Saints received a game-high 38 points from senior Diamond Johnson (pictured), but suffered a 75-71 loss. Sierra Bermudez also hit double figures with 13 points. It was just the second time the Saints (12-7) were defeated by a team from Pennsylvania.

EAGLES INSIDER

Jackson’s 2019 season was one big colossal heartbreak

H

is 2019 season was one of the colossal heartbreaks in the history of the Philadelphia Eagles: The muchcelebrated trade to acquire wide receiver DeSean Jackson was greeted with standing ovations throughout the spring and summer and then his regular-season return to the Eagles was worth all the hype as Jackson caught nine passes for 159 yards, including touchdown grabs of 51 and 53 yards. Oh, the fun the Eagles were going to have with Jackson back in town and terrorizing defenses with his speed. It wouldn’t be a fair fight, no way, not with Jackson taking the top off of defenses and the other dangerous

weapons in the Eagles’ receiving corps – Zach Ertz, Dallas Goedert, Alshon Jeffery and Nelson Agholor – having all kinds of room to roam. And then … And then you know what happened. Jackson suffered a core muscle injury the next week in Atlanta and played exactly four snaps and caught one pass before his season ended. The Eagles’ passing

Dave

Spadaro

game went from explosive to grit and grind with a bunch of practice squad players admirably filling the void, and Jackson spent his days rehabbing in the athletic training room and posting tantalizing videos on social media keeping us abreast of his progress. We’re looking ahead here, which is the natural thing to do. One of the primary questions the Eagles have to answer for 2020 is this: How does Jackson, who turned 33 years old in December, fit into the equation? How much can the Eagles reasonably expect from a player who hasn’t played 16 games in a single season since 2013? “We’re going to get him ready to go,” head coach Doug Pederson said.

“That’s the plan.” When Jackson is at his best, he changes games and he has the killer speed and Super Bowl LIV again told us how speed wins on the football field. Defenses have to pay extra attention to him and shade more coverage his way. He gives an offense “chunk” plays, big plays down the field to make for easier scoring drives. The Eagles in 2019 had to scratch and claw their way for every touchdown scored. The Eagles have a lot to weigh here. They want to get younger and faster and stronger, yeah, but they also recognize that there aren’t many faster than Jackson, even after surgery to repair his sports hernia. Is he worth the $8.6 mil-

lion hit to the salary cap, a pittance to pay in the NFL world for a player who is such a dynamic player? Then again, the Eagles, even as they plan to continue to count on Jackson, have to make backup plans. It’s difficult to expect Jackson to suddenly suit up for 16 games and play every snap. The Eagles have to make sure they’ve got depth and talent and speed at wide receiver in addition to Jackson. No way the Eagles can afford to let a single injury change the course of a season so significantly, as Jackson’s did in 2019.

Flyers not so bad in all their back-to-back games By Mark Zimmaro SOUTH PHILLY REVIEW

T

he NHL doesn’t hate your team. Last week, representatives from the Flyers sat down with a National Hockey League official in an attempt to find a way to reduce the number of back-to-back games the team will play in future seasons. The Flyers think they got the short end of the stick this year, having a league-high 17 back-to-back games on the 2019-20 schedule. The NHL’s likely response: “It happens.” It may be tough to hear, but the league isn’t punishing the franchise for the sins of the Broad Street Bullies all those years ago. Simply put, somebody has to have the most back-to-back games in the league each year and the Flyers weren’t alone with that burden, as the Pittsburgh Penguins also had 17. And for all that complaining, the Flyers are 5-4-2 in the second half of back-to-backs so far this season, including a thrilling 6-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. Traditionally, teams in the Eastern Conference have it good when it comes to travel. True, it was a weird year as the Flyers began their season in Prague, then came home for one day before setting sail on a Western Canada road trip. But that was really the only difference from any other season, and the Flyers recovered just fine. Try being the Edmonton Oilers, who have to take a three-and-a-half-hour flight twice a year to Los Angeles or Arizona just to play a division rival. Connor McDavid is a great hockey player but he still has to go through customs. The Flyers can jump on a bus to play the Devils, Rangers, Islanders and Capitals.

Delaware resident Chris Greenwell had alleged his 13-year-old son was physically assaulted by the Flyers mascot during a photoshoot, claiming Gritty had punched his son in the back.
