found myself following what I thought was a white rabbit, but really was a wrapper with a half-eaten slice of an inside-out pizza that miracuTom Cardella lously blew into a trash container near the recreation center in my neighborhood. When I got to the bottom of the trash container, I found myself hurtling through a dark tunnel that seemed to go on forever like a presidential campaign that never ends. I woke to find myself in the middle of a press conference. Never had I been engulfed in so much hairspray in my life. Coughing and sputtering, I heard the angry sounds of an aroused media. The reporters, all of whom looked like Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen, were jumping up and down and stamping their feet. Their anger was directed at the White House Press Secretary, Sam Spicy. Spicy wore a cheap suit (Is Robert Hall still in business?) and emitted a strong smell of Jade East. It is rumored that Spicy is not Sam’s real name, but a nickname that

s he experienced late adolescence and early adulthood, Matthew Decker, fortunate to have found he had an instinctual draw toward theater, looked to locate more members of his “tribeâ€? in the hopes of appreciating and advancing stage-based lessons. Thanks to his effervescent afďŹ nity for directing, the former Queen Village resident has aligned himself with many kindred spirits in becoming an award-winning overseer and is continuing to captivate audiences by helming the Arden Theatre Co.’s production of “John.â€? “I love being involved with projects that offer opportunities to probe the depth of a playwright’s intentions,â€? the 35-year-old said not far from the Old City-based venue that is presenting the Annie Baker-penned piece through Feb. 26. “The Arden wants to address that severity with every show, so I’m very lucky and blessed to be a part of this.â€? Decker, who resides in Center City, serves as the associate artistic director for the revered entity and has prompted patrons to express their gratitude through his masterful handling of many works, including last year’s “The Stinky Cheese Man,â€? for which he won his third Barrymore Award. Through “John,â€? he is giving the Arden faithful proof of his admiration for Baker, having guided her “Circle Mirror Transformationâ€? for the Norristown-based Theatre Horizon, which he co-founded in 2005, three years ago. Set in Gettysburg, famous for the 1863 Civil War battle that raged there for three days, the intense play addresses the complexities of keeping love intact, standing up for oneself, and straying from allowing outside perceptions to cloud awareness of our identities. Because of the inherent unease within the script, with a young couple’s trip to a bed and breakfast making evident their strife and two locals’ demeanors and pasts revealing their idiosyncrasies and regrets, Decker dubbed the text a presenter of “great problems to solve,â€? and he has not backed down from any challenge since the mid-January opening. “I never want for anything to be easy, so it’s always beautiful to ďŹ nd eager people to mesh with,â€? he said of his status as a collaborative conveyor of

ing towed out of a private lot or driveway. The current system in place for when a car should be towed has proven to be flawed. Currently, the only requirement for a car to be towed in our city is the tow truck driver needs to take a photo of the illegally parked vehicle. This has led to companies taking advantage of the good faith bestowed upon them by hanging false no parking signs, or towing legally parked cars into prohibited spots and then taking a picture. Placing the power to say whether or not a vehicle should be towed back into the hands of our enforcement agents in the PPA and PPD will eliminate this illegal and immoral action. As for the soda tax, I’ll use this space to answer some common questions.

Where is the tax revenue going? I heard most of it actually isn’t going to pre-K, schools, parks, rec centers and libraries. The programs are just ramping up, so this year, 75 percent of the tax revenue is going towards pre-K, community schools and Rebuild (the investment in parks, rec centers and libraries). Once the programs reach full operations in two-and-a-half years, 97 percent of the tax revenue will go toward those three programs. The remaining 3 percent of revenue is spent on the Healthy Stores Tax Credit, which was passed in the spring to help small businesses negatively impacted by the tax, and to cover costs to collect the tax.

“This country is based on inclusivity. Why, then, is (President) Trump not passing on to suffering people the same courtesy that his ancestors received when coming here? Anthony D., West Philadelphia

How are you going to pay for the programs if everyone shops outside of the city? Similar threats were made about liquor after the drink tax went into effect and they proved empty. However, our revenue projections do account for a significant drop in consumption of these products “It’s kind of sad that stuff like this is going on. There are too many people suffering for us to ignore them. Policies need to change. Dwayne Carson, North Philadelphia

within Philadelphia, yet even with a 27 percent drop in consumption, our revenue projections still cover the programs. How are small businesses going to survive if people do their grocery shopping outside of the city? Similar ominous predictions were made after the drink tax went into effect, but Philadelphia’s bar and restaurant scene has only grown since that time. However, stores who do see a decline in sweetened drink sales and decide to shift to healthier products are eligible for the Healthy Store Tax Credit. This credit, offered against the City’s Business Income and Receipts Tax, is offered to qualifying merchants who increase their inventory of healthy beverages. The credit is calculated as the difference in merchant cost for healthy beverages compared to the prior year, up to $2,000. Why are juices and milk substitutes taxed? 100 percent juices are only subject to the tax if the phase “added sugar is on the label, or if they have an added sweetener, which you can tell my reading the nutrition label. Unsweetened milk substitutes are also not taxed. To find a list of non-taxable juice and milk substitute brands, go to phillybevtax.com Mayor Jim Kenney Comment at southphillyreview.com/opinion/ letters.

ROSKLQV RQ 6RXWK %URDG 6WUHHW UHDOO\" Believe it or not, the concept is not as a crazy as it sounds. Yes, long before the days of the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, N.J., South Philly was the place to hang with the fishes. The place was the Aquarama Aquarium, the theatre of the sea, and it was located at the intersection of South Broad and Hartranft streets. Debuting in December 1962, it predated the Spectrum and Veterans Stadium. Many have said this site known for aquatic acts and a popular dance show made its big splash too early in life. For $1-$2, families could enjoy daily shows. The design included several tanks, one of which was 155,000-gallon fresh water tank. Whales also enjoyed a residency in South Phily, as they were on exhibit inside of a 100,000-gallon salt water pool. The place was also home to exotic fish and other forms of aquatic life. Remember the late Gene Hart, the former voice

of the Philadelphia Flyers? Well, before he was calling those Stanley Cup-winning moments, he served as the Aquarama’s announcer, hosting multiple shows a day. The Aquarama was also a great spot to take a class trip. Unfortunately, the space, which was privately owned, had a very short life span, as it closed in 1968, and was later demolished in 1969. Over the years, numerous places have come and gone in the old Aquarama space. CVS Pharmacy lacks that wow factor that the Aquarama once had. Imagine if the Aquarama was still standing today, an era in which the Eagles, Sixers, Flyers, Phillies and endless A-list musical superstars pack the sports complex landscape by the thousands. We’re talking about a place to enjoy endless hours of family fun before or after an event, without having to cross the bridge. Now, that would be an adventure! City seeks feedback from residents 2016-17 will close for good on Feb. 15. The Office of the Mayor introduced the survey online and in printed form last fall in partnership with the Temple University Institute for Survey Research. The response was geographically diverse too, with representation from each of the city’s 50-plus ZIP codes. Yet, organizers want to make sure that they have an adequate sample size from each neighborhood in the city, rather than just a few responses from certain areas. “I think what’s important is that from living in Philly, we know that different parts of the city get different attentions. And we want to highlight, to take a deeper dive into the data by neighborhood and by ZIP code so that it’s more meaningful, Ruffin said, “so that we really know what are the disparities across the city. Ruffin’s office is not releasing preliminary findings from the first phase of the survey because all of the new data will be folded into the existing set. To respond, residents need only visit the PHLsurvey.com website. A drop-down menu at the top of the page allows the user to view the questions in English or Spanish. It takes about 10 minutes to complete. After some preliminary questions, the meat of the survey features a series of department-specific pages. Respondents are

asked to assess public safety, streets and sanitation, parks and recreation, neighborhood development, economic development, health and human services, along with community services. Then it asks the respondent to rate his or her top three priorities for ways the city can improve the services it provides to residents. Two more sections focus specifically on the police department and 311 system. The survey wraps up with some demographics-related questions and an opportunity for the taker to opt-in for participation in future focus groups. A separate opt-in feature allows respondents to sign up for additional Temple-organized surveys that may or may not involve city government. Survey takers can also submit their names and contact information to enter a drawing for a $100 gift card. continued from page 1 to reflect even more on their fortune as enrollees. “Being in a Catholic school teaches you so much about believing in yourself and being kind to others, Joseph said to a nod from his twin, with whom he shares every class. “We’ve made really good friends, and we’ve had great teachers who really care about us. “Those are the best parts, John added, stating, with a laugh, that “It’s nice to use iPads, too. Increased awareness of technology’s immense role in enhancing curricula throughout its facilities has coupled with the Archdiocese’s constant concern for fostering faith to make the system as a whole even more appealing. That heightened consideration among the inhabitants of the nation’s fifth-largest city has meant that fears about the future of Catholic education have dwindled. Tensions certainly ran high five years ago when the five-county diocese, through the Blue Ribbon Commission, shuttered and consolidated many sites. Spokesman Kenneth A. Gavin noted that since the uneasy period, the Philadelphia South Vicariate, consisting of, among others, South Philly’s six elementary schools and Ss. NeumannGoretti High School, have witnessed a stabilization in terms of enrollment trends, with elementary tallies in the jurisdiction standing at 3,400 total students. “Our registrants are special children, Sister Mary Regina, Saint Monica’s secondyear principal, said as people flocked to the senior school at 2500 S. 16th St. to fraternize with student tour givers. “The future is bright for all our schools, especially within our classrooms. There is great support across the archdiocesan leadership team because everyone is aware of the dedication that this call to educate future generations takes. WITH SECULAR MATTERS so prevalent throughout contemporary society, Catholic schools and their faith-fervent overseers have often faced ridicule as being behind the times and decreasingly vital as reliable institutions and educators. Brunella Mirarchi Benales disregards such disrespect for the estimation of what the buildings and the administrators accomplish, considering them all molders of morals that will yield lifelong blessings. “The best benefits are that they receive a faith-centered education as well as the finest academics while enrolled at St. Monica’s, the mother of third-grader Daniella and ’15 alum Damian, now a sophomore at Girard

Academic Music Program, said. “There is an emphasis on Catholic values, and they apply them daily in the classroom. They are aware that God is present in everything they do. One of the most important reasons is that they get to practice their faith and their sacraments as a school community and create a special bond among the students that they will always carry with them. A 1985 graduate of the Girard Estate haven, which has regularly received kudos through the Great Philly Schools report, Benales solidified her regard for the Catholic school system by attending St. Maria Goretti High School and La Salle University. Deeming enrollment within a parochial location “a wonderful tradition to pass on, she noted her descendants’ characters have evolved through the tutelage found within the archdiocese, with Salvatore Gullotta Jr. well on the way to joining her as a touter of the various schools’ pleasant environs. “I’m more aware of all my feelings, and I have a good understanding of how we all need to be more compassionate, the Neumann-Goretti freshman said as his father, a former treasurer for the Fathers & Sons Club, shared the late morning with the breakfast bunch. “I take pride in my faith, and I think it’s helping me to make good decisions as I grow older. The Marconi resident, his contemporaries, present registrants, and distinguished graduates have certainly done their part to validate Saint Monica’s aforementioned nickname, and the parishioners who took in the 10 a.m. Mass found themselves endowed with more proof of their prowess when learning from Regina that the Philadelphia South Advisory Council had tabbed Kelley, the parish’s beloved pastor, as a Champion of Faith. That honor comes as a direct result of his advocacy for Catholic education’s importance and will find him commended March 9 at the National Shrine of St. John Neumann in Northern Liberties. “Catholic schooling is immensely important for the moral integrity of our country as a whole, and it’s increasingly easy to support it, Regina said of sustaining the livelihood of her school, Neumann-Goretti, Our Lady of Hope, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Gabriel, St. Pio, and St. Thomas Aquinas through such measures as the Earned Income Tax Credit initiative. “We are messengers who come together with loving parents to give these children reminders of how precious they are and how they have a call to serve others in turn with love and compassion as their guides. A>@ Contact Staff Writer Joseph Myers at jmyers@ southphillyreview.com. was pinned on him in childhood because of his obsession with oregano. Spicy is accusing me of distorting the truth, attempting to delegitimize the new president and cheating on my expense account. In addition, Spicy is angry because I laughed at the length of the president’s made-in-China tie. Fade to black. I wake up interviewing Kellyanne Conniver. Conniver tells me that she has been named to the president’s cabinet as the Minister of Untruth. I ask Kellyanne why the new president has named people to head the very agencies they want to destroy. She accuses me of lacking a sense of humor. When I try to follow-up, she changes the subject and complains that I deliberately underestimated the crowd size at the president’s recent inauguration. She also accuses me of deliberately underestimating the president’s vote count, as well as underestimating the size of his hands and private parts. When I show her proof that my estimates are correct in every respect, she tells me about the concept of “alternative facts.” Apparently in Wonderland, which is the name of where I find myself, they not only celebrate unbirthdays, but unfacts as well. I love Kellyanne’s perpetual smile. She merrily wishes me a very “Happy Unbirthday.” “The Earth is flat,” she declares after the president has just signed an executive order to prove it. When I protest, she simply says, “Unfact” and runs off. I chase after her. All through Wonderland, I see buildings bearing the name of the new President. I realize that everything bears his name, bridges, street signs, even manhole covers. I even see his name on food such as steak, purified water, and everything that’s fried. On every street corner, there are images of the new president. All these images have been covered with obscene quotes from Madonna. I see citizens of Wonderland walking along the street. Their hair and faces are orange. Over my shoulder, I see Kellyanne disappear into a library. I follow her. Once inside, I look everywhere but I can’t

find her. There is a meeting going on in the library and I’m told citizens are receiving instructions on the meaning and use of the word “exaggeration.” The new President is a big fan (make that a huge fan) of the use of exaggeration. Hereafter through the kingdom of Wonderland, everyone will exaggerate. Everything positive is “terrific,” the “greatest,” and the “best.” Things or people that we don’t like will be referred to as the “worst.” I fade to black again, and when I wake up, I find myself facing a draft board headed by the head of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. “You have been drafted number one,” the official tells me. I’m ecstatic (not just happy) because being drafted number one means that I will earn bushels of money and (if my wife allows me) get a date with Rihanna. But I find out that this is not that kind of draft. The White House has gotten Congress to issue a declaration of war against the media. And I’m first in the draft lottery. I’m to report to a media army being raised by CNN. I’m in the infantry under Gen. Anderson Cooper and am quickly issued a uniform bearing a picture of Ted Turner. I scream that I’m entitled to a deferment because I’m every bit as unqualified as the new president and former Vice President Dick Cheney, both of whom received five deferments. Failing to get a deferment, I ask for a cushy assignment away from the front lines where I can lie like Brian Williams and perhaps (if my wife allows me — even in my dreams I ask permission) have an intimate relationship with Maureen Dowd. In my sordid past, I admittedly used to visit an attractive librarian-prostitute with whom I discussed Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. Our affair ended when we argued over whether MC was really squared and whether polar bears have any kind of future. I awoke from my nightmare before I found out how the war between the media and the White House ended. I suspect the media lost because I find myself in prison where there is a TV with no premium channels. A>@

“I never want for anything to be easy, so it’s always beautiful to ďŹ nd eager people to mesh with,â€? he said of his status as a collaborative conveyor of

plots, with the Arden’s website stating that “John explores “spirituality, relationships, and other scary stories. “This gives us chances to follow our own compass while being true to what writers were looking to accomplish, and it’s that synergy between those who write the material and those who execute it that makes me excited each time there’s a job on the horizon. That excitement has coupled with personal realizations, many bred as his mother courageously battled cancer last year, to endow Decker with greater admiration for the time allotted to each of us. He believes stellar stories can encourage means to deliberate on the best use of one’s finite journey, with “John helping to intensify his compassion and consideration for individual challenges and his eagerness to tackle personal conundrums. “I think it’s important to walk toward the light and to get at what motivates our actions, Decker said. “I’ll forever feel that theater is not only a wonderful entrance way for answers to those questions but also a terrific way to see how important you and I and everyone else are to contributing to the powerful story that is life. THE ROXBOROUGH

creative childhood for bearing devotion to delivering well-received shows to the masses. Reading, writing and exploring music registered as early interests, with Decker eventually deeming acting his likely vocation. Thinking of theater as a thrilling source of opportunities to encourage him to feel comfortable in his skin, the young man looked to the Big Apple for assistance, enrolling at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he studied at the well-renowned Atlantic Theatre Co. “It was there that how I looked at a text changed, Decker said of the institution whose founders include Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet and Emmy Award winner William H. Macy. “I started to have a genuine, unbending interest in the whole idea of a play, and soon enough, the idea of acting gave way to the possibilities present in being a director. As appealing as New York is, his home state won the honor of where he would look to cast his watchful eye over casts. Decker, whose family moved to King of Prussia when he was 7, gradually gathered perceptions of the City of Brotherly Love’s revered theatrical existence. While many local actors and actresses are

What I’ve learned through many experiences, including my mom’s death, is that you can’t let small battles weigh you down. You’ll get through if you believe. That’s easier said than done, I know, but it’s rewarding to hold dear to and even more rewarding to validate.â€? With “Johnâ€? and last fall’s “A New Brainâ€? for Theatre Horizon, Decker noted he has pretty much wrapped up his directing contributions to this season and revealed he has begun to consider his next batch of projects. “I’m not entirely sure what’s next, and that’s exciting,â€? he said. “No matter what, though, I’ll be looking to make something as dynamic as it deserves to be. ‌ We need art to sustain our curiosity, and I’m as curious as they come these days.â€? highly familiar with the praise behind being hailed as “a Philadelphia performer because of the term’s acknowledgment of their full immersion into their efforts, he stressed that being called “a Philadelphia director can occur, too, if an individual truly cares about being a storyteller. “There are no frills involved, Decker said, adding that his ilk consists of figures fully dedicated to serving the integrity of celebrated scribes. “Even with original works, every decision is going to come down to what is going to be the most educational step in valuing an audience and its experiences. Armed with ardor for narratives, he has helped the Arden and Theatre Horizon, frequent employers for South Philly thespians past and present, to grow as havens for nuanced looks at what unites the human family as it faces various conflicts. The concept of resilience often comes through easily in a Decker-helmed offering, but so does the idea of seeing which lessons can come from struggles. “We face drama each day, he said. “It doesn’t have to be a national or global event either. We’re all going through something, and if we’re fortunate, we’ll keep reaching for that sense of stability.

Diane’s Super Bowl Buffalo Chicken Dip

Dream sequence

C

ome 6:30 Sunday night, all plans will center around Super Bowl LI. Some will be rooting for Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons while others will remain loyal to the New England Patriots. For those serving as party hosts, scoring a tasty touchdown with your guests will make the night go smoothly, no matter which team wins. Now for the play call: Ready, set, prepare Diane Pecca’s Buffalo Chicken Dip. The Girard Estate resident said she sampled a similar dip at a potluck years ago and that she found the taste amazing. She suggested doubling the recipe and serving it with crusty bread. Here’s hoping you score major points with your acquaintances when they reach for this goodie.

he Chestnut Street cafe and restaurant operates its own second-floor roaster, its co-owner is a medal-winning bean man, and the entire place has been modeled on the stylish grand cafes of the owners’ homeland in the Abruzzi region of Italy. On most mornings, the place is a popular destination for Italian expatriates sipping cups of espresso and speaking with an accent you don’t often hear on the streets of Center City, yo. It’s not exactly known for beer, however. Which is a shame, because among the cafe’s short list of taps is a brew that reveals the pleasant things that can happen at the intersection of coffee and beer. Sometimes, coffee-flavored beers are nothing more than that: beer that tastes like someone dumped a half-cup of Joe into your pint while clearing the table. There’s no real thought about how the bitterness of roasted beans is going to play off the flavor of malt and hops. Gran Gianduiotto gets it right. It’s a rich, dark stout from West Chester’s Levante Brewery, a small, young brewery that ought to be getting a lot more attention from locals. It was inspired by the Italian chocolates known as gianduiotto. If you had a grandmother who lived in a rowhouse south of Washington Avenue, you’re already familiar with these small, pyramid-like hazelnut-flavored chocolates. They’re the ones wrapped in silver tinfoil that she used to give you after Sunday dinner, remember? If not, think Nutella. Yes, hazelnut, vanilla, cocoa and coffee is a mouthful when it comes to beer, and it’s worth every glorious moment you’ll spend nursing a glass. None of those flavors dominates by itself; instead, they swim together across the palate in melt-in-the-mouth goodness. At 11 percent alcohol, this is no morning cup. I’d pair it with a cannoli. And then consider some of the many other coffee beers on local shelves. For example, Terrapin Brewing out of Ath-

De h[i[hlWj_edi h[gk_h[Z ens, Georgia, is pushing the whole coffeeand-beer thing to a new level with its newly released series of Single Origin Coffee Brown Ale. You’ll find it in mixed fourpacks with bottles featuring four different coffee types from Costa Rica, Indonesia, Ecuador (my fave) and Kenya. With a minimally hopped brown ale as a base, the coffee flavor really steps forward. This is a beer for java junkies. Other recommended coffee beers: Joe Coffee Porter from Philadelphia Brewing—the coffee plays off the malt nicely in this easy drinking beer made with fair trade beans. Stone Enjoy By Coffee & Chocolate— a rare coffee-flavored IPA, released in time for Valentine’s Day. Ballast Point Mocha Marlin—a coffeeand-chocolate-flavored porter, it’s smooth with a hint of vanilla. Victory Java Cask—a massively strong (14 percent alcohol) bourbon barrel-aged coffee stout flavored with just a hint of smoke. Sly Fox Oslo Porter—a London-style porter made with espresso beans from Brooklyn-based roaster Oslo Coffee. Now available on draft in area bars. Double Nickel Belgian Brown with cascara—made with the skins of coffee beans, to produce a flavor that seems closer to tea than coffee. Twitter: @Beer_RADAR

Crème BrĂťlĂŠe Bistro and Cafe’s Turkish Shakshuka

rom his humble beginnings in Mexico to his joyful journeys throughout the United States, including notable employment at New York City’s Financier Patisserie and Wynn Las Vegas, Armando Tapia has tirelessly sought to evolve as a culinary artist. Even when hitting upon reliable recipes, he has desired to give homage to his family’s intense admiration for bettering oneself by pondering how his creations might prove more appealing. In October, two months after he and four relatives opened Crème BrĂťlĂŠe Bistro and Cafe, the 33-year-old made good on his personal promise to grow, expanding its menu beyond items such as crepes, French toast and waffles to become a welcome addition to Dickinson Square West. “To open something like this was a huge goal,â€? the resident of the 600 block of Morris Street said from the quaint establishment. “I’ve been all around this country for jobs, and it’s nice to have a business like this in a great neighborhood.â€? The proud co-owner, whose additional vocational treks include time in Georgia, Michigan and Oregon, has enjoyed the last six months as a reminder of how well he and his kin communicate, as his wife, sister-inlaw, and two brothers join him in offering an ethnically diverse menu. Their efforts have resulted in excellent connections with customers and fall placement on Eater Philly’s list of essential Philadelphia bakeries. “That was a great moment for us to have recognition so early into our time here,â€? Tapia, who opened the site one month after moving to Philadelphia, said. “That really gave us the extra push to believe in ourselves.â€? Because of his relatives’ vast industry experience, the family relies on accumulated wisdom and fond memories of childhood to infuse each creation with care and

love, an approach that will likely win over the hearts of those looking to make sweet Valentine’s Day purchases. That manner of thinking also inspired the Tapias’ recipe selection, with the neighborhood newcomers electing to share the steps to preparing Turkish Shakshuka. “We are very happy to let your readers know about this, brother Dario said of the dish that yields automatic reminders of their upbringing and time spent with mother Margarita Torres and grandmother Francisca Pablo. “We have good memories of eating it and hope that they will like it, too.

ew activities register as being more American than gathering with friends on Super Bowl Sunday to see who will capture the championship. This year’s matchup, the 51st revered rendition that pits the NFC victor against the AFC vanquisher, will find the Atlanta Falcons gunning for their first title and hoping to keep the New England Patriots from claiming their fifth Lombardi Trophy. If the small fortune that it costs to travel to see the game in Houston has denied you the fortune of taking in the action in person, fear not, as numerous South Philly spots will help you to feast on the competition and great eats.

The Yardley resident, known now as “The Bucks County Gobbler,â€? is a first-time Wing Bowl contestant this year and second-year communications student at Bucks County Community College. The chicken wing-eating contest, hosted by 94.1 WIP, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. It kicks off at 6 a.m. at the Wells Fargo Center tomorrow. To get in, Warren had to try out on the air. When he arrived at the radio studio last month, he wanted to walk away with two things: a seat at the contest, and a job at the station. “It was a way to get an in,â€? he laughed. “When I was done I told them I’d even start as a janitor and work my way up.â€? Fortunately, instead of a broom, Warren got some contacts and good advice on where to

His girlfriend’s grandfather has been to every single event — once even checking himself out of the hospital while recovering from a heart attack to attend. “He’s been one of my biggest supporters, said Warren. Even with all that history behind him, Warren’s still just looking to have a good time during his first visit to Wing Bowl, as a contender or spectator. It’s also not lost on him that there are rumors this year’s event, the 25th, may be its last. But for now, Warren’s just eating, training and even getting into the occasional online battle with former contestants and other competitive eaters. It’s all in good fun, however, with Warren noting he’s also now friends — on Facebook, at least — with just about everyone he’s been speaking with. “This has all been been a great journey. Big Game Snacks for the Win (Family Features) The big game is almost here: two teams, a room full of fans and a spread of fan-favorite foods to keep everybody going. Whether everyone’s at your place or you’re heading somewhere else to watch the game, you want to make sure the place is stocked with flavorful snacks that will wow the crowd. This year, step up your game with clutch recipes loaded with bold flavor and plenty of heat. One of the most popular party favorites is buffalo chicken dip. It is a must-have because it’s creamy, cheesy and loaded with great-tasting buffalo flavor. Serve it up with fresh-cut celery or bell peppers, baby carrots, crackers and pita bread, and you’ll add some kick to your sporty celebration. Plus, this recipe provides a way to include those traditional football flavors without the mess of hot wings. A kick can make or break a game, and the right sauce can make or break your recipe. Not only is Frank’s RedHot a game-day staple, it was the key ingredi-

ent in the first-ever buffalo wings back in 1964. It’s an essential ingredient for any big game food lineup, so make sure you’ve got plenty on-hand. Once you’ve got the dip prepared for kickoff, it’s time to turn to something a little more unexpected. Round out your game-day lineup with an amazing flavor combination they won’t see coming – something sweet, tangy and savory that brings just the right amount of heat: Sweet Chili Meatballs. Bite-sized meatballs made with ginger, fresh cilantro, green onions and sweet chili sauce are baked before getting doused in even more sweet chili sauce, making them an irresistibly tasty addition to any game day spread. If the game heads into overtime, no need to worry because these meatballs will stay warm in the slow cooker all game long. If you’re looking for more big game tips and recipes to dazzle the crowd, check out franksredhot.com/recipes.

Buffalo Chicken Dip

Sweet Chili Meatballs

2 cups shredded cooked chicken 1 package cream cheese (8 ounces), softened 1/2 cup Frank’s RedHot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce or Buffalo Wings Sauce 1/2 cup ranch dressing 1/2 cup crumbled bleu cheese or other shredded cheese green onions, chopped (optional)

1 pound lean ground turkey or ground beef 1/3 cup Japanese panko crumbs or bread crumbs 1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped 3 green onions, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, finely minced 1 large egg, beaten 1/2 teaspoon salt 12 ounces Frank’s RedHot Sweet Chili Sauce, divided

Heat oven to 350 F. In shallow, 1-quart baking dish, combine all ingredients. Bake 20 minutes, or until mixture is heated through. Stir. Garnish with chopped green onions, if desired. Serve with tortilla chips, crackers and/or vegetables.

Heat oven to 350 F. Mix ground meat, panko crumbs, cilantro, green onion, ginger, egg, salt and 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce. Form into one-inch meatballs. Place meatballs on lightly greased baking sheets. Bake 20 minutes, turning once halfway through. Put meatballs in slow cooker on warm. With slow cooker on low to keep meatballs warm, pour remaining sweet chili sauce over meatballs. Gently stir to coat.

The Eagles clearly believe that as well. That’s why they made dramatic moves, via a pair of trades last spring, to go all the way up to the No. 2 spot in the NFL Draft to select Carson Wentz, the much-heralded signal caller from North Dakota State. Now, 16 games and a 7-9 record later, Wentz is ahead of schedule as the face of this fran-

chise and the rising star at the game’s most important position. How good is he, really? How great can he be? “He’s an exciting quarterback who showed so much in his first season. You see all the tools. You see the mental makeup and the leadership he displayed, Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas said. “A lot of growth happens in the NFL between years one and two. So we’re looking forward to seeing how much of a jump Carson makes. At 6-feet-5 and 240 pounds, Wentz is a big man with a huge game. He’s tough, he’s athletic and he can make every throw. Tossed into the starting lineup when the Eagles traded incumbent starter Sam Bradford to Minnesota eight days before the start of the 2016 regular season, Wentz didn’t flinch. In the process, he accepted, with humility and enthusiasm, the mantle of responsibility for an entire city of Eagles lovers. Wentz set an NFL record for rookies with 379 completions and established Eagles rookie

records in pass attempts (607), passing yards (3,782), completion percentage (62.4 percent), passing TDs (16) and passer rating (79.3). An encore is in the works. “We have to put more pieces around Carson and allow him to thrive and take that next step, Eagles executive vice president of football operations Howie Roseman said. “With his competitive fire, his intangible skill set, his physical skill set, we couldn’t be more excited about the things that he brings to the table and see what he’s going to do with a full offseason and opportunity to grow here in year two. New England’s Tom Brady and Atlanta’s Matt Ryan are going to Houston for Super Bowl LI after defeating Pittsburgh’s Ben Roethlisberger and Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers in the conference championship games. All four quarterbacks have star pedigree. All four have profiles consistent with most of the Super Bowl winners in NFL history. The Eagles, meanwhile, haven’t won a playoff game since 2008 and haven’t reached the postseason since ’13. Not since the days

of Donovan McNabb has this team been a consistent threat. Now, the team is convinced it’s got the sport’s most important piece in place in Wentz after years of winding through the likes of Kevin Kolb, Michael Vick, Nick Foles and Mark Sanchez. The task now is to build around its franchise player and get back in the playoff game and stay there for a long, long time. “We put down the foundation this year, safety Malcolm Jenkins said. “Now we have to grow around Carson. We all took notice of how he progressed through the season. I’ll tell you, it’s exciting. He’s got it. I’ve been around long enough to know the difference, and Carson Wentz is the real deal. That gives us a chance to win every week. I can’t wait to get started for next year. “We’re going to have a lot of fun around here. A>@ Dave Spadaro is a member of the Eagles organization. and trust the process. The fans have been great. I’m glad we’re winning games for them and the city. The Sixers have compiled an 11-5 mark since Dec. 30 (the record does not include last night’s game against the Mavericks). They have earned that record without the services of Ben Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick who has been out the entire season dealing with a foot injury. One reason Embiid believes they have turned it around is head coach Brett Brown’s ability to get his team on the same page. Early in the season, several Sixers including Jahlil Okafor and Nerlens Noel, were not shy about expressing their concerns over their playing time, the lack of it, and their roles. But over the last few months, Embiid said Brown has been able to make it work,

and with that came the wins. “It’s good, Embiid said. “Before the season, I had a conversation with coach (Brown). One of the main things I brought up was about everybody knowing his role and coming together, especially defensively. Everybody is bonding to the system, and we’re starting to win some games. THE SIXERS RECENTLY defeated two 30-win teams. Over the last three years, the Sixers were more likely to be down by 30 going into the fourth quarter. The Sixers beat a healthy Toronto Raptors team 94-89, holding a squad that was averaging more than 109 points per game to well below its average. “It’s great, Embiid said. “That gives us a lot of confidence coming into the next game. We beat a team with the second

f you are stuck sitting for two years waiting to see if you are going to be an NBA star or a trivia question, you had better have a sense of humor. If you are waiting to see if the two surgeries on your foot were successful, and whether you have a chance to be a household name or earn a permanent spot on an “NBA draft busts feature, you need to be able to roll with the punches. Sixers rookie center Joel Embiid has displayed both qualities as he has turned the Sixers from a team living in the “Dark Side to a team that is packing arenas. He is not only the talk of the town, but the entire country. Embiid has his own nation of fans. Virtually every home game he plays in draws chants of “M-V-P and “Trust the Process, a phrase used to convince fans not to lose faith over the three previous seasons of tanking. Embiid has nicknamed himself “The Process, as a permanent reminder of how he ended up in Philadelphia. His following is passionate and not just limited to Philadelphia. “It has been great, it’s amazing, Embiid said recently. “That’s something, last year, that’s something I never thought was going to happen. I never felt we would be winning so many games in a row. “What I am trying to build, I’m trying to change the culture, Embiid continued. I like to get into it with the fans. I don’t like it quiet, I play better when the fans are into it, chanting M-V-P, chanting for us. That’s what I love. In Boston, Celtics fans are known to take to great players on other teams like former Sixers great Julius Erving. That group, at a recent game in Boston, chanted “Trust the Process to show its appreciation for the rookie who posted a line of 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots in just 26 minutes. “All I can say is it’s amazing, Embiid said. “Even on the road you hear ‘Trust the Process’ chants. I feel like everybody around the world is starting to follow us

best record in the East. It’s amazing and we’re going to keep on working. Like I said, everybody is bonding to the system and coaches. They’re doing a great job. Coach Brown, coach (Lloyd ) Pierce, coach (Billy) Lange and all the coaches, they’ve been doing their job of preparing us.Everybody has bought in and we’re playing good basketball. We’re going to try and build on that. Embiid was asked what people know about the Sixers now that they are having success in 2017. “I don’t think it’s a fluke, Embiid said. “We’re competing, winning games and we’re playing good defense. We’ve finally found what we’re looking for. At the beginning of the season, everybody was trying to find themselves, especially me. This is just the beginning of my career, so I still have a lot to learn, and I am willing to learn. Everybody, my teammates are willing to learn. We’re just now coming together. Embiid has played an average of just 25.4 minutes per game after 31 games. Still, his numbers are All-star team level: 20.2 points per game, 7.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 2.5 blocks. He was not selected to the All-Star reserves despite finishing in the top three in fan voting among centers in the East. “Once again the popular vote didn’t matter ... he joked on his Twitter page. The 7-foot, 250-pounder will be playing in the BBVA Compass Rising Stars Challenge during NBA All-Star weekend. Brown has been quoted as saying his Sixers are a five-year process in the works. Embiid was asked if he believes that number is wrong now that the team seems to have turned a corner. “Definitely, Embiid said without hesitation. “Playing games like that (Toronto, Clippers) shows it. We don’t even have Ben (Simmons) back yet, and Jah (Jahlil Okafor) hasn’t been able to get minutes, and Jah is really good. So there is a lot of talent here still waiting for their turn. I think we are closer than people think we are. A>@
