elcome to the annual Birthday Party issue! While we always hope our pages are inspirational, this month we’re featuring South Jersey locations to throw your kid a perfect birthday extravaganza (page 8). Birthdays are meant to be fun, but with busy lives, make the day hassle free and hand over the details to enjoy the day with family and friends. And, need I remind you that the clock is ticking to find the right camp for your kids this summer. This month be sure to check out “8 Reasons Your Child Needs Camp”, (page 12). There are so many positive reasons to send your kids to camp, but the way I see it, resilience is the best skill for kids to obtain.

Jess Michaels, Director of Communications at the NJ and NY divisions of the American Camp Association says, “It’s important for children to develop resilience for coping with the obstacles and stressors that inevitably will happen in their lives. At camp, children are often problem solving, adapting to change, and building confidence. These are all tools that help children to cope with hurdles they may encounter and therefore build resiliency.” In addition to Editor of South Jersey MOM, I am also a licensed psychotherapist (page 4) and work with older teens through adults that need help with problem solving skills. So often, kids and teens are isolated on social media in the summer. Attending Summer Camp allows kids of all ages to connect, navigate and make autonomous decisions every day. This month is National Nutrition Month and be sure to look for the Virtua Health article, “Is Eating Locally Grown Food Healthier for You?” (page 5). Today’s generation spend so much time with a device in their hand instead of a ball. I challenge you this month to play with your kids outside: take a walk, play soccer, throw a football, collect sticks. Be adventurous! The possibilities are endless. Your friend & fellow MOM,

Karen Ognibene Executive Editor karen@superiorgx.com

Is Eating Locally Grown Food

HEALTHIER FOR YOU?

F

ruits and vegetables are a key part of a healthy diet. But did you know where they grow matters? Food grown nearby carries many extra benefits—for your family and our local farmers. What does ‘locally grown’ mean? Food is considered “local” if it’s grown and harvested within 100 miles of your home or the restaurant where it’s served. Locally grown foods are found at farm markets, roadside stands, “pick-your-own” farms and some grocery stores.

Is locally grown food healthier? The main health benefit of locally grown food is that it’s fresher. Fruits and vegetables begin to lose their nutrients within 24 hours of being picked, so fresher produce is more nutritious. In addition, locally grown food is picked at its peak ripeness, when it’s most dense with nutrients. Most produce in the grocery store is harvested before it’s fully ripe so it can make the trip to store shelves without rotting. Air, artificial lights and temperature changes during transport also lower a food’s nutritional value. Eating local also means you can meet the people who grow your food. You can ask them questions about their farming methods and pesticide use (if any). Local farmers typically focus on soil health and safe growing practices, especially if they’re farming organically. Better quality soil and more sustainable farming practices typically mean better tasting, more nutritious produce. Is locally grown food more expensive than store-bought food? Fresh produce is usually more expensive than processed, canned or frozen foods, but you can save money on fresh, locally grown food by www.southjerseymom.com

eating it when it’s in season. If you buy local produce during the growing season, it’s around the same price (or maybe even less expensive) as produce in the grocery store, and preserving foods by canning or freezing can help you save money during the off-season. With the goal of improving health and ensuring good nutrition in under-served areas, Virtua offers a Mobile Farmer’s Market that provides access to produce year round. The market, a 23-foot bus brimming with fresh produce, sells fruits and vegetables at significantly reduced prices in communities throughout Burlington and Camden counties four days a week. Why should I consider buying locally grown foods? By eating locally grown food, you support your local farmers and help grow your local economy. Buying locally also cuts transport energy costs and reduces food waste. Farm markets also are great places to find new foods to try. That’s because smaller growers often offer heirloom and other varieties that you may not be able to find in the grocery store. Eating a wider variety of colorful fruits and vegetables gives you a broader range of antioxidants and phytonutrients, and may help expand your food horizons. Your local grower may even provide you with a new recipe or two. Virtua’s registered dietitians can teach you how to incorporate in-season foods into a healthy eating plan. Finding a Pediatric Healthcare Provider is Simple Yet Complex Care for a child at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital begins with an initial consultation, followed by establishing a diagnosis and a treatment plan. Our specialists and therapists collaborate to determine the best course of care and communicate quickly with the referring physicians. The hospital offers a full range of inpatient and outpatient services. A child can receive services for all of their orthopaedic needs in one building. We provide care from birth through age 18, regardless of the family’s ability to pay.

T

oday many parents will crowdsource and select a doctor based on a recommendation from word of mouth, social media channels, friends and family, or even insurance companies. Children see a pediatrician or a family doctor for their well and sick visits. However, when it comes time to needing specialty care, such as an orthopaedic doctor, a parent may be forced to make a quick decision and simply use the recommendation of a friend or doctor from an emergency department. Looking for a pediatric specialty doctor can be confusing and overwhelming. Many adults do not have an orthopaedic specialist at their disposal, let alone one for their child. Parents want the best for their child, which is why you should choose Shriners Hospitals for Children for all of your orthopaedic needs.

FROM ROUTINE TO RARE Orthopedics covers many areas of the body. From clubfeet and limb discrepancies to other lesser known birth injuries. We see children who fell at the playground or while doing daily activities and sprained their ankle or arm almost every day. We also treat sports injuries or children who were recently diagnosed with scoliosis. During a short mountain bike trek last year, 15-yearold Olivia fell off her bike and severely damaged her arm. Right away, she knew something was wrong, from the pain and lack of ability to move the arm she fell on. Olivia underwent a nerve transfer surgery at the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital, which improved her range of motion and ability tremendously. Olivia was already very active when her bike accident occurred; she participated in swimming, cheer, soccer, and was even a lifeguard. Just about a month after her surgery, she had dropped 10 seconds off her backstroke time. She was now able to swim faster than she did before her bike accident. Now, Olivia returns to the Philadelphia Shriners Hospital every six months for a check-up and monitor the progress of her nerve transfer surgery. Who would have thought a bike fall would have led to needing nerve surgery to correct the damage. If you believe your child or know a child that could benefit from the care provided at Shriners Hospitals for Children — Philadelphia, call 215-430-4140 or email us at phlnewappts@shrinenet.org

EASY ACCESS We are located on North Broad Street in Philadelphia near the health science campus of Temple University with an onsite garage parking free to all patients, making it easy to park and walk into the building for appointments. 6 | March 2020

A Healthy KETOGENIC DIET for Weight Loss and Wellness that Works! I

“Ketosis for weight loss is quite effective and is considered safe under the guidance of a health care professional”

n general, most Americans have become accustomed to an unbalanced diet that consists primarily of processed foods high in refined sugar. The ketogenic diet combats these habits and is achieved by restricting caloric intake and carbohydrate consumption, thus decreasing insulin levels in the body. This decrease signals the body’s metabolism to break down stored fat into ketone bodies which can be used as an alternate and primary energy source. When done consistently and safely under medical supervision, this state of ketosis leads to rapid weight loss. You are essentially consuming the body’s own fat and harnessing it as a clean burning fuel for sustained energy. Ketosis for weight loss is quite effective and is considered safe under the guidance of a health care professional. When nutritional ketosis is sustained for a period of time your body will adapt to this state and over time become more efficient at utilizing ketones for energy. Not only does insulin resistance improve and weight loss occur, but patients also feel an improvement in stamina, focus, and sense of well being. Successfully sustaining nutritional ketosis for weight loss requires a balanced diet that is personalized for each patient. This diet can differ from person to person depending on their metabolism, past medical history, activity level, food preference, and lifestyle choices. For instance, patients with higher levels of insulin resistance may require a longer period of time to become adapted to a state of nutritional ketosis. It is important to realize that not all ketogenic diets are created equal. Some ketogenic diets are very high in saturated fat which can negatively impact cholesterol levels. Most people who start a ketogenic diet to lose

10 | March 2020

weight consume high levels of fat. Fat is calorie dense and too much of it can slow down weight loss. Adequate hydration is also very important on a ketogenic diet. Consuming the correct amount of electrolytes especially sodium, potassium, and magnesium is key to maintaining cellular homeostasis. For these reasons, medical supervision is very important. Patients should be properly counseled and monitored throughout a ketogenic diet to avoid the unintended pitfalls that could be detrimental to their health in the long run. Successfully mastering the art of sustained nutritional ketosis has many other health benefits including improved focus, lower stress levels, mood stabilization, increased endurance, and improved immune response. When combined together with intermittent fasting, this further increase in ketone levels promotes the activation of cellular repair and recycling mechanisms. These cellular repair mechanisms supported by ketosis can reduce the negative impact of chronic disease and inflammation and promote longevity. When done correctly under direct medical supervision the ketogenic diet can be considered the key to unlocking the body’s full potential! summer camp guide

8

REASONS YOUR CHILD NEEDS CAMP By Jess Michaels, Director of Communications American Camp Association, NY & NJ

A

t camp, children have the opportunity to go sailing, swim, play sports and get to the top of the climbing wall. Children have the time of their life at camp while trying all these new activities but what many people don’t always realize is all the life skills children will gain at camp that help them grow to be successful adults in both their personal lives and in the workplace. Here is just a short list of the reasons that your child needs camp for their social education.

1 2

Independence -When children go to day or overnight camp, they are given the opportunity to grow more independent. Separation from parents gives a child the ability to think independently which builds self-esteem and confidence. Resilience – It is important for children to develop resilience for coping with the obstacles and stresses that inevitably will happen in their lives. At camp, children are often problem solving, adapting to change, and building confidence. These are all tools that help children to cope with hurdles they may encounter and therefore build resiliency.

3

Sense of community- Children become part of a community at camp. They learn to share in camp traditions, work together, support each other, eat together and at overnight camp, live in bunks together. For the majority of campers, being at summer camp is the first time they have lived with or eaten every meal with a group of people other than their family.

4

Confidence – Camp provides children with many opportunities to build confidence. American Camp Association research has found that 92% of campers said that camp helped them feel good about themselves and 70% of parents reported that their child gained self-confidence at camp. When a child goes under water for the first time, swims across the pool or goes on the zip line after being apprehensive, children gain confidence by accomplishing something they didn’t think they could do.

5

Leadership – There are many ways children gain leadership skills at camp. From teaching a new camper the camp songs to being a “big brother” or “big sister” to the youngest campers to being a captain for color war, children are learning to be leaders in their camp community which is a skill that will help them in their personal and professional lives as they get older.

6 7 8

Break from technology – According to a Kaiser Family Foundation study, today’s children spend over 7.5 hours a day engaged in media. Excessive media consumption prevents children from taking part in hands on activities and socializing with other children. The majority of summer camps ban most technology, including TV, smart phones, ipads and computers Taking a break from technology over the summer allows children to focus on learning new skills and taking part in social interactions. New experiences – Each day, children are trying something new at camp. Whether it’s planting a vegetable in the organic garden, getting on a horse, learning how to do the front crawl, or learning how to serve in tennis, children are learning new skills and experiencing something different. Research by the American Camp Association shows that 63% of campers continue to participate in some of the new activities he or she learned at camp when they get home. Communication skills - Children at camp are constantly communicating with each other. There are no ipads or iphones for messaging, only one-on-one communication. Campers talk while in their bunk, at meals, on the sports fields, and while doing projects in arts & crafts. Today’s children need the camp environment more than ever to have true face to face conversations without the use of technology to communicate with each other.

PGA Junior League Academy

“Golf is a life skill, and so much more than just a sport”

W

hat do you do with a gifted set of golf clubs? For some, they will stuff them to collect dust in a neglected corner of the garage or coat closet. But for 10-year-old Emma DiPatri of Franklinville, a champion swimmer, that set of clubs her mother’s friend gave them opened new opportunities. “My good friend gifted me a set of golf clubs which Emma now uses almost daily,” Lori DiPatri, Emma’s mother, explained. “… Emma told me that she was interested in golf one day. I called the club to find out about program for younger children and Brian explained to me that the club had a summer golf team. I registered Emma and her love of golf took off from there.” That club is Scotland Run and the Head Professional is Brian Hecker, who helped start the Junior Golf Academy three years ago. The club offers PGA Junior League Golf for ages 18 | March 2020

8-13, as well as clinics and camps open to children ages 5-17. “I wanted to start to get more juniors involved in the game,” Brian said. “The benefit of having them start young is they get those fundamentals earlier, and we teach them to learn the joys of golf.” Hecker and his staff create a fun and relaxed atmosphere for the students, who learn how to hold and swing a club and stand properly while playing games. Emma said golf looked fun. She joined the PGA Junior League last year and will play again this season. She praised Brian and his staff for being very informative and always ready to answer any questions she or her teammates may have. “People are my team are very nice and supportive. The coaches are a big help,” Emma said. “The programs are amazing. Brian brings a fun aspect to it for kids,” Nicole Campanella of Williamstown said. Her daughter, Alyssa, 16, is a sophomore at Williamstown High School. “There are Hula hoops out on the course for the kids to chip into. Stuff that you wouldn’t even associate with golf. They make it fun for them. They bring the basic concept to the kids, and they don't even realize they are learning.” Alyssa, who plays on her school’s golf team, was one of the original members of Scotland Run’s PGA Junior League. She plans on playing throughout her high school career and hopes to land a golf scholarship for college. “Scotland Run’s Junior Golf Academy offers kids an opportunity to learn the game of golf and develop their skills at a young age. I started playing golf when I was 12 and still enjoy the game today. I took advantage of a junior golf program which is the best way to learn the game,” Neil Hartman, Director of Rowan University’s Center for Sports Communication & Social Impact, said. “Golf is one of the most demanding sports, requiring a lot of practice time, but I have seen young players commit themselves to the sport as a teenager and earn a big-time college scholarship. It can happen but you have to really enjoy playing and many times

When calling advertisers, please say you saw it in SJMOM!

that begins at a young age at your local golf club,” Hartman added. Learning the game has benefits that reach beyond school and scholarships. “It’s an enjoyable game, a game they can play their entire lives,” Brian said. “People in their 20s and 30s, as they enter the workforce, need to know golf because their company has outings and they need to know the game. With some basic knowledge, they can do it for fun. It’s something the whole family can play together. It’s a good family activity.” Nicole agrees. Alyssa and her father John play at Scotland Run together. Learning the game has also given Alyssa, a self-described “shy” girl, more confidence. “Golf is a life skill, and so much more than just a sport. At Scotland Run, they teach you to look people in the eye, introduce yourself. They not only teach you the sport, but the whole etiquette of the sport. They are teaching them so many life skills,” Nicole said. “Everybody we talk to, we encourage them to play golf. “I can’t praise the Scotland Run program enough.” Registration for clinics and camps and the PGA Junior League is open now. Information is available at scotlandrun.com/golf_ events/2020/02/junior-golf-academy. For more information, contact Brian Hecker at 856-863-3737 or hecker@scotlandrun.com
