ENERGY STAR® is the label given by the EPA and the Department of Energy to products that exceed federal energy efficiency guidelines. Homes earn this label if they use at least 30 percent less energy than a home built to the standard energy code. ENERGY STAR Homes achieve this distinction in five ways, beginning with the design of engineered heating, ventilation and air conditioning. The design takes into account the bends and turns in ductwork, register locations, duct lengths, connections and air flow, all of which results in energy cost savings and more consistent temperatures from room to room. Air-tight ducts are a second way energy is saved. These are achieved by using straps, collar ties and mastic per third party protocols which translate into lower heating and cooling costs and better air distribution. Energy efficient vinyl windows with specially selective glass are a third way ENERGY STAR Homes save money. This window treatment reflects the sun’s energy away from the home in the summer and the furnace’s heat back to the home in winter which reduces fabric fading as well as lowers energy costs. Quality control is assured because energy features are documented, inspected and retested by third parties. Independent parties also certify that homes carrying the ENERGY STAR label save at least 30 percent more energy than the Model Energy Code requires. Calabash: More than Seafood ...A Family-Oriented Enclave “Calabash.” Not long ago it was a name attached to a collection of seafood restaurants, where people would drive several hours just to dine on the best fried seafood in the world. A “buffet” is as foreign to Calabash as the ad in the New Yorker several years ago, showing silver candleabra and a wine flagon on a white tablecloth. The Travel Channel calls the Grand Strand “The East Coast’s ultimate vacation hub” and not without reason. This 60 miles of golden beaches is a unique combination of past and present, rustic seclusion and metropolitan hustle. Visitors can stroll through a unique sculpture garden (Brookgreen Gardens) or attend a live theatre production (Carolina Opry and Alabama Theatre); shag the night away at the place where shag was born or scuba dive for Blackbeard's treasure after a round of golf at more than 100 courses. This is historic land stretching from Brunswick County to Georgetown, founded by Spanish in 1526. In 1726, it was claimed by the British who named it for their king, George II. Today, the abundant waters from five major rivers connecting with the Atlantic Ocean, attract outdoor sportsmen from around the world, who come to reel in bass, bream and crappie in fresh water and flounder, black drum, and winter trout in the tidal creeks. North of Georgetown is DeBordieu, one of the oldest beachside colonies on the Atlantic coast. Lafayette gave it its French name (“God’s border”) in 1777 when he landed on its golden shores. Live shows at Carolina Opry, Alabama Theatre and other venues provide professional entertainment year-round. An arts and events calendar is packed with festivals, tournaments and concerts. Myrtle Beach even has its own symphony orchestra, the Long Bay Symphony, which is based in the city. The Grand Strand is a year-round sports haven; average monthly temperatures never dip below 55 degrees. Golf is the heartbeat of the Grand Strand economy like computer chips are to Silicon Valley. There is even a Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday organization with the single goal of making Myrtle Beach the No. 1 Golf Destination in the world. Pete Dye, Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer,

Gary Player and Greg Norman are among the big-name architects of some of the 100-plus courses, often built around 300-year-old oak trees. Last year Golf Digest named Myrtle Beach the No. 1 golf town in the United States, based on cost of living, weather, home prices, crime rate, 2,178 golf holes and other attractions. (The area boasts nine of the top 100 public courses in the nation.) Golf started in Myrtle Beach in 1927 at the Ocean Forest Club, now the Pine Lakes International Country Club. The Dunes Golf and Beach Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones in 1948, was the area’s second course. (A $6 million renovation in 2001 kept the the Dunes at the top of the game.) Besides all of the water sports, from fishing and boating to snorkeling and skiing, baseball is a relative newcomer to Myrtle Beach activities. For a dozen years the Pelicans, an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves, have provided a thrilling game to fans of all ages. Part of the Carolina League of Minor League Baseball, the team already has two league championships on record. There are two things most visitors do in Myrtle Beach: get some sand between their toes and see a show at The Carolina Opry Theater. The 2200-seat show palace features stunning sound, specialty lighting, and three giant video screens. The critically acclaimed show packs Broadway, country, pop, rock'n roll, gospel, and bluegrass into two hours of fabulous music, comedy and dance, with 35 of the nation's top performers. Visiting Brookgreen Gardens, National Historic Landmark The woman standing at the brochure rack in the hotel lobby made a decision. “We’re going to Brookgreen Gardens today” she said to her husband. “We keep saying we’re going to see what’s there, and today we’re going to find out, “ she said with finality. So they came and found a place where history, art, and nature merge seamlessly. A place nestled within the 60-mile stretch of the Grand Strand where one of the most significant collection of figurative sculpture by American artists in the world is showcased among native plants and flowers under a canopy of historic live oaks. The place is Brookgreen Gardens where for 75 years visitors have come to marvel at its beauty. The idea for Brookgreen Gardens was born in 1930 when philanthropist, Archer M. Huntington, and his wife, the famous sculptor Anna Hyatt Huntington, read a real estate brochure about “Four Colonial Estates on the Waccamaw River for sale.” The price was $225,000 for 6,635 acres of land that stretched from the Waccamaw River to the Atlantic Ocean. They purchased the property plus several thousand additional acres to build a winter home; however, very soon after the acquisition, they decided to devote much of the land as a protected wildlife refuge and to dedicate another parcel of land as a sculpture garden. In 1931, the Huntingtons established Brookgreen Gardens, A Society for Southeastern Flora and Fauna, as a non-profit corporation. It opened it to the public the following year, attracting visitors who might not ordinarily go to an art museum and engaging art lovers in a deeper appreciation of the natural world and its delicate environment. Over the years the beauty of the gardens, the natural surroundings, and the animals in their native habitat have awed millions of visitors.
