making your home work

The secondary spaces that keep you + your home running deserve a refresh, too. Efficiency in design can make a big impact on your daily routine.

With 2021 officially upon us, it is key to reflect on the things, people, and spaces that make us most happy. In this reflection, recognize the environments that evoke a sense of calm, but also enhance productivity! Work-from-home trends are on the rise, and we’ve definitely seen an increase in the desire for efficiency in the home, but we still need to designate the hard-working spaces from the spots to relax and renew. This recent Southern Studio project embodies that balance.

The journey began amid the North Carolina stay-at-home orders, which was a slight roadblock but, we’re never ones to shy away from a challenge! One of our favorite parts of the design process is to learn and observe our clients’ likes and dislikes through a ’throwdown’ session, where we display an array of samples— tile, paint, fabrics, trims—of various colors and patterns. This is where we discovered the clients’ love for a soft color palette, full of soft blues, beiges, and greys, which set the tone for the project.

While a whole-home remodel seemed intimidating at first, we worked closely with the family to make the design process as seamless as possible—even during the statewide shutdown. Through collaborative sessions and with help from our friends Daymon and Myriam Asbury at Asbury Remodeling,

our goal

In this this project, we prioritized the balance between having a comfortable place to relax + renew while also creating functional, hardworking spaces.

we created a sophisticated, liveable, and functional family oasis. Each space is layered with durable surfaces and fabrics that can withstand everyday use, with subtle touches of sophistication, such as crystal accent lamps.

The Southern Studio design team of Vicky Serany and Kayla Cook worked to balance form with function to create a livable, polished master bedroom space in which the owners can relax and renew. When it comes to bedroom spaces, while it may seem obvious, comfort is key! But, comfort is different for all. The owners for this project appreciated the easy-to-care-for, but still luxurious, bed linens that are perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Moving to the hard-working spaces, we always follow one major principle: function first. In the laundry room and home-office of this home, we prioritized finding ample storage space and durable surfaces, but that does not mean style was compromised! Because these spaces are typically smaller, the smallest details can make a large impact. For example, the bold, patterned Thibault wallpaper used in the laundry room immediately draws an eye and makes laundry time infinitely more fun.

As we navigate the new year, we’ll continue to find a balance between comfort and hard-working spaces in the home—recognizing the purposes for each space and creatively planning accordingly, while always keeping the clients’ wellness and happiness at the forefront.
