Looking back over the Beacon and Baltimore village – just 15 minutes by road from Skibbereen. Skibbereen, often affectionately known as ‘Skibb’, means ‘little boat harbour’ as the River Ilen, which runs through the town, flows out to sea at Baltimore. Skibbereen is the ‘hub’ town for this part of West Cork and is an ideal base from which to discover all that the area has to offer. It’s a vibrant, colourful and friendly place where you can sample the very best of West Cork’s artisan food and craft culture, enjoy traditional and modern Irish pubs and avail of a wide range of great shops and services.

Lough Hyne

The significance of this lake was first realised by marine biologists in 1886. It is a truly magical place and should be a ‘must-see’ on any visitor’s list. The only inland saltwater lake in Europe is also Ireland’s first Marine Nature Reserve and nestles in a fold of hills, just 5km south west of Skibbereen, off the Baltimore Road. It’s a popular swimming and kayaking lake, with temperatures slightly above that of the sea. The woodland walk up the nearby Knockomagh Hill offers fantastic views (see right) over the lake, Cape Clear, Sherkin Island and beyond. Skibbereen Heritage Centre is worth a visit before going to Lough Hyne, where an excellent audio-visual documentary is shown on the history, formation and folklore of the lake, plus underwater footage showing some of the plant and animal life to be found. Lough Hyne’s spectacular setting has seen it feature in a number of films, documentaries and music videos.

Heritage Centre

Skibbereen Heritage Centre is a not-to-be-missed attraction. Located in the award-winning, beautifully restored old gasworks building on Upper Bridge Street, the centre houses: – Lough Hyne Interpretive Centre – The Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition marks the tragic period in the 1840s that is known in Irish history as The Great Hunger. Skibbereen was very badly affected, losing up to a third of its population to hunger, disease and emigration. – A Skibbereen Walking Trail app, ‘Skibbereen: The Famine Story’, guides the walker through the sites and stories in Skibbereen using the voices of the era. Oscar-winning actor and local resident Jeremy Irons is just one of those to have lent his vocal talents to the project. This app can be downloaded to include admission to the centre. – An archaeology trail of the Skibbereen area. – Genealogy services. Available online at www.skibbheritage. com, you will also find fully searchable databases, which include a Graveyard Survey, Loan Fund Records, Tithe Books, Estate Records and a Townlands Database. Earn your SCAR or go Do Run Running!

Adventure racing in West Cork and around Skibbereen in particular has become increasingly popular in recent years. The SCAR (Skibbereen Charity Adventure Race), which takes place on Saturday, October 19th this year, is a multi-discipline adventure race in and around the breathtaking beauty and rugged environs of Skibbereen, Castletownshend, Lough Hyne and the wild Atlantic coastline. This National Series affiliated race has three different levels and beginners are actively encouraged to take part. For the first time, this year sees provision for teams to enter this entirely volunteer-organised event. All monies raised through registration fees are donated to charities and local causes. www.thescar.ie Another great event is the annual Do Run Run on Sherkin Island. This fun, family-friendly 5km run/walk takes place on Saturday, August 24th. See FB for more info or contact Cian (086-3992562) or Garry 086-8328394.

Fishing

There’s a wide variety of locations and all types of fishing on offer in and around the Skibbereen area. Many of the local coastal villages offer deepsea fishing options .For fishing closer to Skibbereen itself, here are three great suggestions: Shepperton Lakes – about two miles east of Skibbereen just off the main N71, these lakes hold rainbow and brown trout as well as pike. Permits are available locally (look for the sign on the N71 road) Mackerel fishing – great fun for young and old alike when the tide is in and the fish are around (especially mid to late summer). Check out Glandore Pier, Union Hall Pier or Sandy Cove (off the rocks on the road between Castletownshend and Sandy Cove – but please take great care and be mindful of waves and tide at all times). The River Ilen – is a medium-sized spate river about 21 miles (33kms) long and flows through some of the most beautiful scenery in West Cork. A large part of the river is managed by the River Ilen Anglers’ Club based in Skibbereen. The season for salmon and sea trout opens on February 15th and closes on September 30th for salmon, and on October 12th for sea trout. Countryside Sports on Townshend Street will have all the info you need.

To market, to market

Skibbereen Farmers’ Market, which is held every Saturday morning in the town centre (Fairfield car park) is a real delight where you can purchase local produce including fruit, vegetables, fish, meat, herbs, freshly baked breads and pastries, cheeses, honeys and jams as well as a whole range of craft products. There are also fresh coffee stalls, crepe chefs, and seating. On a good summer’s day, it usually attracts a few buskers, too. Homemade bread, cakes and jams are available at Skibbereen Country Market every Friday between 11.30 and 2pm in the nearby Abbeystrewery Hall in Skibbereen.

Liss Ard Country House & Gardens

This magical estate of country manors, gardens, walking trails, ponds and lakes features the amazing James Turrell designed Sky Garden. The gardens have restricted access so check their website or Facebook page for details. Previous guests at the hotel include musicians Bono and Adam Clayton and actors Mark Hamill and Gabriel Byrne. Dinner is served in the restaurant Wednesday through Sunday from 6pm. Their menu features local West Cork ingredients as well as produce grown in their own Liss Ard gardens. See www.lissardestate.com for details. Tel: 028-40000.

Pirates and fairies on Inishbeg Estate

The 97-acre organic estate is on an island in the Ilen Estuary reached by a stone bridge with a café serving home produce. It was voted one of the best gardens in Ireland (Liberties Press, 2011). Have fun and claim your reward finding the pirates, fairy houses and native animals on the three trails at Inish Beg estate. Named after the real pirates who sacked Baltimore in 1631, this year they have moved to new hiding places. The fairies will be busying themselves around the magical woodlands while you search for their houses. The brand new trail challenges you to find and name the 10 native animal silhouettes. Open to the public all year except when weddings are being held.

14

World-class art

The Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre is located right in the centre of Skibbereen town. Uillinn runs an exciting programme of events throughout the year with art exhibitions, summer workshops for children and performances. www.westcorkartscentre.com

They are open to everyone (once registered – see parkrun. ie for details), the events are free, and are safe and easy to take part in. People of every ability are encouraged to take part; from beginners to those with more experience – all are welcome. The local parkrun takes place in the picturesque Rineen Woods in Castlehaven, just a few miles outside of Skibbereen every Saturday morning at 9.30am sharp so try to get there a little earlier. You’ll be made most welcome and there’s always coffee, cake and craic in Union Hall afterwards! Email: castlehavenhelpers@parkrun.com

Beach fun!

Two favourite beaches with locals are Tragumna – a blue flag beach – and Tralispean (check the local tourist office for directions). Both beaches are safe and child-friendly with Tragumna having the added bonus of public toilets and a pub serving food nearby. Further afield you’ll find Barleycove (pictured), which is amongst Ireland’s most beautiful beaches with lovely golden sand and is also home to a surf school and a hotel. To find it, head towards Goleen and then towards Crookhaven, then follow the signs for Barleycove. Star Wars fans can really make a day of it by visiting the nearby Brow Head which featured as one of the locations for some of the series.

Famine graveyard

The Skibbereen area was one of the worst affected by the Great Famine of 1845-1852. It is here that the mass graves mass grave of between 8,000 and 10,000 famine victims are to be found at Abbeystrewry near Skibbereen,. This lonely plot bears testament to the tragic consequences of the catastrophic failure of the potato crop in the area during the 1840s when the whole island of Ireland and particularly the West was decimated through famine and emigration. There is a commemorative sculpture at the graveyard, which is a short stroll from the town, on the Schull Road. Be mindful of traffic as this is a busy road!

Visit the Pirate Exhibition at Dún na Séad castle which was the stronghold of a pirate family for hundreds of years. Baltimore is famous for a raid in 1631 when Barbary pirates from North Africa took most of the villagers and sold them into slavery, but the exhibition reveals how the village had a very different history of piracy prior to that raid. From as early as the 13th century, the local rulers and residents of the castle, the O’Driscolls, engaged in piracy by attacking passing vessels. Visit www.baltimorecastle.ie for details of opening times. The 2019 Baltimore Pirate festival will take place from June 21st-23rd.

To Inish Beg 22 Estate

Geographically speaking, Baltimore might be slightly off the main tourist trail – located around 13km SW of Skibbereen – but you really don’t want to miss out on going there. A vibrant coastal village, there’s a range of accommodation including hotels, guesthouses and a hostel, plus a variety of places to eat and drink. A convenience store, church and swimming pool can be found here and across its natural harbour lie Carbery’s Hundred 40 Isles, including the islands of Cape Clear, Sherkin and Heir, which are just a short ferry ride away from the recently redeveloped pier.

Birds of a feather

West Cork has some incredible varieties of native and visiting birds and there is a thriving bird-watching community of enthusiasts in the area. Birdwatch Ireland organises regular walks in the region, and sometimes day trips include picnic days out for all the family. High on the list of favourite locations for ‘twitchers’ are Sherkin and Cape Clear islands. For further details go to www.birdwatchirelandwestcork.ie

18

Watch the world go by

Sometimes, on a nice summer’s day, can be a real pleasure just to sit in The Square in Baltimore and do absolutely nothing – except maybe enjoy a drop of the black stuff or a glass of wine, or a nibble, at the outdoor seating area. As you look out over the recently redeveloped pier and sailing club, you’ll see yachts sailing in the bay, fishing boats returning, ferries going to and from the islands, children swimming or learning to sail in the harbour and sometimes even seals or dolphins swimming between the piers. If the evening is fine, wait for the sunset over Sherkin – breathtaking every time. it

Wild Atlantic Pool

Baltimore’s community swimming pool – the Wild Atlantic Pool – is Mecca for swimming enthusiasts. It is open seven days a week to locals and tourists alike and is a noted attraction on The Wild Atlantic Way. An eco-friendly heating system keeps the water at a comfortable 30 degrees Celsius and a special water cleaning mechanism uses UV light, and so cuts back on the necessity for chemicals. There is also a well-equipped gym on site. www.baltimorepool.ie

With an incredible physique and huge strength Danno was known as the ‘Irish Whip’ in celebration of his famous throwing technique (one of the village’s many pubs 16 still bears that name). At 407m, this is the highest summit in the area. The top of the hill is used by the Irish Aviation Authority to house their transatlantic radar equipment, hence the two iconic ‘spheres’ on show. The views from the top are spectacular looking out over Roaring Water Bay, the Beara peninsula and even towards south Kerry. On a clear day, you can also see the Fastnet Lighthouse. There is a road to the summit but drivers are advised to proceed slowly and with caution.

Skibbereen

Castletownshend, around 8km from Skibbereen, is a picturesque and tranquil coastal village developed around a small 17th century castle which was built by Richard 32 Townshend and whose descendants still reside there. The castle is open to the public, with accommodation available and food being served daily. The main street of the village is lined with 18th century homes and runs down a steep hill leading to Castlehaven Harbour, the aforementioned castle and St Barrahane’s Church. You’ll find a couple of pubs (also serving food) plus a shop. The harbour is a safe place to moor a boat.

LEAP (pronounced ‘Lep’) is situated at the north end of an estuary that runs to Union Hall, Glandore and then out to sea. Leap is approximately 10km east of Skibbereen and it’s full Irish name means ‘O’Donovan’s Leap’ and is derived from the story of a chieftain who was pursued by English soldiers, Skibbereen but escaped by jumping across a ravine at the bottom of the village. You’ll find a petrol station and shop, a cafe, music venue, pubs/bars (some serving food), Catholic and Church Of Ireland churches and a playground.

Trail blazing!

Paint some pottery!

A recent project organised by Skibbereen Tidy Towns has outlined three interlinked loop walks – the Abbey Loop, the Rock Loop and the Compass Loop – around the historic market town of Skibbereen. Beginning at the Heritage Centre, you visit the town’s historic sites, climb the surrounding hills and are rewarded with panoramic views of the town and Ilen River estuary. For more information call into the Tourist Office or the Heritage Centre. The Fastnet Trails are a series of scenic walks for families and enthusiasts which lie close to the coast of the wonderfully named Roaring Water Bay. The trails cover a total of 80km between Lisheen (a few of miles west of Skibbereen) and Schull. A ramble along these mostly tarmac backroads and the old green Butter Road offers the walker a unique tapestry of landscapes and seascapes. Enjoy the abundant flora and fauna and connect with the past as you pass medieval castles, churches and old burial grounds. Pick up a brochure locally for details of each of the eight walks which start from four different Trailheads along the Mizen Peninsula – namely Lisheen, Kilcoe, Ballydehob and Schull. These walks are not strenuous, but as their lengths vary, choose a route to suit age and time available.

36

35

Anyone can paint pottery at the Cré Pottery Studio on Market Street in Skibbereen. Choose from hundreds of ceramic pieces including animals, mugs, plates, bowls, princesses and dragons, and while away an hour or two with a cappuccino or a pot of tea. There are lots of colours, stencils stamps and sponges to inspire you to create your own art. A selection of delicious homemade cakes and treats are also available. Why not celebrate your special occasion at Cré, be it a birthday, hen party or even an office party with a twist? All groups are welcome to walk in and BYOB evenings are held on the first Friday of every month and all-day clay workshops will be held during June, July August and September. For that special occasion you can commission the folks at Cré to make something unique or even give one of their gift vouchers. Open seven days a week.

For art’s sake

This festival which started in 2009 takes place from July 26th to August 4th and has grown in size and stature over the past 10 years. It continues to attract top notch talent and performers who come to join in the festival spirit which permeates the town. The 2019 programme covers all strands of the arts and is jam – packed with concerts, workshops exhibitions and readings. This year features Limerick’s own ‘Blindboy’ in a live podcast on July 29th, 10th anniversary Canon Goodman Concert featuring Martin O’Connor, Cathal Hayden and Seamie O’Dowd on August 3rd, and Amadou and the Blind Boys of Alabama on August 1st. The tenth anniversary festival programme details are available skibbereenartsfestival.com or twitter: Skibbereen Arts Fest.

Take a trip around Fastnet Rock

Most visitors to West Cork will find it difficult to miss seeing the Iconic and majestic Fastnet Rock and lighthouse. Known as the ‘Teardrop of Ireland’ it often made for the last gaze towards Irish soil for many departing emigrants heading towards the other side of the Atlantic. Easily spotted along the Mizen Peninsula, it beckons sailors and landlubbers alike. Fastnet Rock Tours operating from Cape Clear Island provide daytime tours which depart from Schull and Baltimore between April and August. The 2.5 hours sailing is also a good opportunity to see some magnificent sea creatures such as whales and dolphins. For more info see www.FastnetTour.com

Whale & Dolphin watching

The seas around West Cork attract a diversity of wildlife including minke, fin and humpback whales, common dolphins and harbour porpoises. Occasional sightings of killer whales occur, whilst Atlantic white-sided dolphins, common and grey seals can be seen year ‘round. There’s also a chance of seeing turtles, blue sharks, and basking sharks are very common. In fact, sightings of basking sharks – which can grow to 10 metres in length – have been particularly common in recent summers and they often school in large numbers while feeding. Trips last around four hours and depart from various harbours and piers in the area. In high season, booking is essential as the tours fill up fast.

38

Row, row, row your boat!

The Ilen river, which runs through Skibbereen, is home to the hugely successful Skibbereen Rowing Club – made famous on the international stage by the 2016 Olympic Games silver medal-winning brothers Gary and Paul O’Donovan, who are the current world men’s lightweight double champions. Gary and Paul are the best in the world and Skibbereen Rowing Club – Ireland’s most successful rowing club – is where it all started. Other notable rowers in recent years include former world champions Shane O’Driscoll and Mark O’Donovan, and European silver medallist Denise Walsh. The club is located just a couple of kilometres outside Skibbereen on the river road going to Old Court and Baltimore. See www.skibbereenrowingclub.com for details of camps and events during the summer.

Mizen Head Visitor Centre

Located five miles from Goleen, the Mizen Head Signal Station was built to save lives off the treacherous rocks at Ireland’s most south-westerly point. An award-winning Maritime Museum and heritage attraction, this authentic all-weather experience is a must-see with its spectacular location on high cliffs overlooking swirling Atlantic Ocean tides. From the car park and visitor centre, the Signal Station is a ten-minute walk along the path, down the 99 steps and across the famous arched bridge (pictured). The Fastnet Rock Lighthouse is visible on a clear day and it, along with points on the peninsula was used by Marconi in his attempts to send his first radio message across the Atlantic at the turn of the 20th Century.

Visit Cape, Sherkin or Heir (Hare) Island

43

Any trip to this part of the world isn’t complete without taking a trip to one or more of the beautiful, inhabited islands off the coast. The Irish-speaking (Gaeltacht) island of Cape Clear (above left), population around 130, is the most southerly inhabited land in Ireland. There is a wonderful ‘Storytelling Festival’ held in September of each year on Cape Clear. It’s also a popular walking and running location. Sherkin Island (above right) is home to a historic Franciscan Friary and the ruins of an O’Driscoll clan castle, both of which date back to the 14th century. It has some lovely beaches (including Silver Strand) as well as a hotel and a pub. It’s a regular Sunday afternoon ferry-ride in the summer for locals and visitors. Heir Island has a population of around 20 and also enjoys some lovely sandy beaches as well as a restaurant, cookery school and baking school. Ferries run regularly through the summer from Baltimore pier, Cunnamore pier and from Schull harbour. Check timetables at piers and in local shops.

May the Force be with you!

The Mizen Peninsula, and Brow Head in particular, temporarily formed part of a ‘galaxy far, far away’ when scenes from the Star Wars movie were filmed there. Locals and fans alike were thrilled to feel the ‘Force’ when none other than Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and co-star Daisy Ridley (left) flew into Cork and made their way to the Mizen for the filming.

Get hooked on deep-sea fishing

Charter boats and fishing trips run out of Union Hall, Baltimore and Schull. As the seas around these areas are warmed by the Gulf Stream, a wide variety of game fish are to be found including cod, skate, pollack, blue shark, tuna, bass and many more. Don’t miss the Deep Sea Angling Festival in Baltimore, August 22nd-25th.

‘Score’ and see a road bowling match

Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and Co Cork; particularly West Cork in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a country road. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet big on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or ‘score’. To find out if a match is planned nearby ask locally or pick up a copy of The Southern Star sports section.

Go for a drive, marvel at our scenery

One of our favourite suggestions is to simply jump in your car, on a nice sunny day and enjoy the views along this stretch of the Wild Atlantic Way. Here’s a suggested route: Leap, Glandore, Union Hall, Castletownshend, Toe Head, Tragumna, Lough Hyne, Baltimore, Skibbereen, Ballydehob, Schull, Goleen and Mizen Head. You could even split this route over a few days. Be sure to make regular stop-offs and taste some of the wonderful local food on offer.

Great attractions across West Cork 6. Michael Collins & Irish freedom

1. Skibbereen Heritage Centre

Located in the beautifully restored Gasworks building, the Skibbereen Heritage Centre houses the Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition as well as The Lough Hyne Visitor Centre where you can admire the salt-water aquarium depicting life in Lough Hyne while you watch an informative film of the reserve.

Michael Collins House Museum in Clonakilty is located in a restored Georgian building at No.7 Emmet Square. It tells the story of Ireland’s struggle for independence focusing on Tadgh an Asna, O’Donovan Rossa and of course, Michael Collins. As well as a number of displays there is an audio-visual room and a gift shop. www.michaelcollinshouse.ie. Another wonderful historical attraction is the Michael Collins Centre, located just off the Timoleague Road, where visitors can experience live illustrated presentations three times daily, audiovisuals and a fine collection of Collins memorabilia. The centre is situated in Michael Collins Memorial Park, which overlooks the magnificent Argideen Valley. The park contains a number of memorials dedicated to Collins and the fight for Irish freedom. www.michaelcollinscentre.com. Collins’ birthplace at Woodfield, also near Clonakilty, is another important historical site.

2. Mizen Visitor Centre, Mizen Head

Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The recently refurbished bridge across the massive crevice in the rock is not for the faint-hearted, but a stunning place to take photographs, or simply listen to the waves crashing below. The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was, as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights. There are many fascinating displays to be seen, both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start.

7. Bantry House & Gardens, Bantry

Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry and is still owned and run by direct descendants of the Earls. The house and gardens command stunning views over the bay and the gardens which include lawn tennis courts, mazes and the famous climb of 103 steps, are stunning to explore. Tours of the house are given and there is a café on site.

3. Model Railway Village, Clonakilty

Get an overview of the area in miniature, by visiting the Model Railway Village where the towns of West Cork are beautifully captured on a scale of 1:24. The working replica of the West Cork Railway is delightful as it chugs along through towns and countryside. There is also an informative Exhibition Centre, indoor play room and cafe facility on-site. The miniature villages, with their working toy trains, were recently restored, repainted and rebuilt. The real-size Choo-Choo road train that goes into town is a great way to explore Clonakilty. www.modelvillage.ie

8. West Cork’s Islands

Bere, Cape Clear, Sherkin, Dursey, Garnish, Whiddy, Heir and Long are the top inhabited islands in West Cork, all with their own unique attractions and appeal. Why not learn about the heritage and history of these magical places, enjoy wonderful local food, take a walking or bus tour with a local guide or experience a thrilling ride in a high speed boat and see the beauty and nature of the sea. Then, depending on which island you visit, settle down in a friendly pub, enjoy a drink and get to know the locals (most of the islands listed are inhabited). Visit www.westcorkislands.com

4. Charles Fort, Kinsale

Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922. It is also a popular civil weddings venue now, too.

9. Uillinn – West Cork Arts Centre

The Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre is located right in the centre of Skibbereen and the imposing corten steel structure can be seen from most angles in the town. There are exhibitions on throughout the summer featuring works by local, national and international artists. There is a coffee shop on the ground floor which is a popular spot with both locals and visitors alike.

5. Rosscarbery adventures

Rosscarbery is fast becoming the action-packed family centre of West Cork. Head to Smugglers Cove to play the pirate-themed adventure golf or try your hand at the Smuggler’s Maze. During July and August try out Ireland’s largest Maize Maze. Hit a few golf balls in the driving range or relax on thevapanoramic sundeck overlooking Rosscarbery. na tA o htped egare ts aL eht ,teef 3 f lddap pu dnaa ep eht si noog ob eMake trip to the Lagoon Activity Centre to enjoy pedal boatr ot ecalp tcefr ht rof dna dra reffo no staob ro kayak a tne utnevda ssel e t r o o o u . s t h e r e a r lp e elddep fo ytne ing,l erstand-up surf boards and canoeing.
