Seafari so good!

3

This is an experience you won’t want to miss. Cruise the tranquil waters of Kenmare Bay in the company of your engaging ‘Singing Captain’. A marine biologist, ocean sailor, photographer and all-round entertainer, Captain Ray founded Seafari in 1993. His 2-3 hour 10 mile eco-nature cruises operate from Kenmare Pier – a short walk from the centre of town. Spot the magnificent white-tailed sea eagles, observe Ireland’s largest seal colony up close and personal and enjoy some fun, laughter and refreshments along the way. Includes entertainment for kids and a warming tot of rum for adults! www.seafariireland.com

PFK Gold & Silversmith

Described by the Irish Times as one of the finest Goldsmiths in the country, Paul Kelly has crafted unique creations for none other than former First Lady Michelle Obama and the First Lady of Irish cinema – Maureen O’Hara. You can watch the master Goldsmith and designer at work in his shop in Henry Street, Kenmare and you can even commission your own special piece which Paul will craft for you. Many beautiful creations adorn Paul’s shop, but probably none more beautiful or eye-catching than his signature piece – The Ring of Kerry. www.pfk.ie

Carnegie Arts Centre

How many towns the size of Kenmare have their own Arts Centre and Theatre? Kenmare is indeed blessed. The Centre, which was opened in 2008, nestles in a beautiful old building that is steeped in history. It’s the perfect venue to showcase the multitude of local talent and to play host to visiting national and international drama companies, artists and musicians. The summer months see a full programme of plays, gigs, art exhibitions, films, dance and visual arts. Visitors to the town are very welcome. Tickets are available on-line. www.carnegieartskenmare.ie

Reenagross Park

4

8

Just a stone’s throw from the centre of Kenmare, Reenagross Park is so called after its Irish name, which translates as ‘The Headland of the Crosses’ or ‘The Muddy Point’. Don’t let the latter name put you off however – it’s not always muddy! The Park is set within the beautiful landscape of Kenmare Bay and features a multitude of trees, flowers, fauna, wildlife & birds. You’ll pass the magnificent Park Hotel on your left and the path will take you right to the water’s edge as well as through a stunning Rhododendron tunnel at the appropriate time of year. Watch out for the Bat Sanctuary also!

Kenmare Heritage Centre & Trail

Don’t miss the opportunity to learn a bit about the history of this wonderful little town – known as one of Ireland’s first ever ‘planned’ towns. Visit the Heritage Centre for all the information and pick up a Heritage Trail map which will lead you to interesting places such as the Stone Circle (pictured) – one of the largest in South West Ireland, Our Lady’s Well and the unique little Cromwell’s Bridge. Is it named after Oliver Cromwell or the Gaelic word for moustache? You decide! Guided Heritage Walks available daily – starting from the Tourist Office.

Indulge in chocolate

The Ring of Kerry boasts not one but two chocolate factories; Lorge Chocolate in Kenmare and Skelligs Chocolate, Ballinskelligs. Award-winning Pastry Chef, Benoit Lorge, hand-makes his high-quality creations in his Bonane factory – just a few miles from Kenmare. Benoit prides himself in following the traditions of the true French artisan in creating his own, unique, succulent chocolates. Skelligs Chocolate features the only ‘open-plan’ chocolate production facility in Ireland and visitors are welcome to spectate, taste and of course buy! No visit to the Ring of Kerry is complete without a little chocolate treat from these two specialists. www.lorge.ie and www.skelligschocolate.com.

Horseriding

With its numerous beautiful, endless, open beaches and the wonderfully quiet, country roads, it’s no wonder that the Ring of Kerry peninsula is a popular choice for horse riding and trekking. There are several horse-riding centres and stables for new or experienced riders, both young and old, including Dromquinna Stables, Blackwater Stables, Burke’s Horse trekking Centre and Eagle Rock Equestrian Centre. Just choose your location, saddle up and you’re hot to trot.

6

The Lace & Design Centre, situated above the Heritage Centre, will tell you all you need to know about the history of this unique industry which was started by the Poor Clare Nuns in 1861. Kenmare Lace is still made in the town today and you can view both modern pieces and antique lace dating back to the Poor Clare Convent days. Kenmare lace and also lace-making materials are available for purchase. Visit the website for further information and to see some lace-making demonstrations. www.kenmarelace.ie

The Artist’s Way

It will come as no surprise to you that the Ring of Kerry is home to many an artist and professional photographer. What better inspiration could there be to fuel one’s creative passion? Every town, area, nook and cranny, features an art gallery and photography gallery or two. Check them out around the Ring and we feel sure you’ll be inspired to pick up a paint brush or a camera yourself!

Town Markets

Whenever you go on holiday, it’s exciting to check out the local food & craft markets. They might be similar to those in your own country, but there’s always something more enjoyable about foreign markets, and of course where else would you go to sample and to buy the local produce. The Ring of Kerry offers several of these markets, including Sneem on Tuesdays; Kenmare on Wednesdays; Caherciveen on Thursdays; Caherdaniel and Killorglin on Fridays; Valentia island on Saturdays & Wednesdays; Ballinskelligs on Sundays and Waterville Indoor Market on Saturdays & Sundays. Visit them all! You’ll be in seventh heaven.

12

13

11

Walk this way!

It’s true that Ireland is not always blessed with the best weather, but how else would we get our beautiful 40 shades of green? If you come prepared for every season, you’ll be grand. The Ring of Kerry offers so many fabulous walking experiences. Follow the Kerry Way, trek the old Kenmare Road to Killarney, check out some of the walking club websites or simply pick up some walking route guides from the local tourist offices. Put your best foot forward and enjoy all that Kerry has to offer.

13

Tee Time

If you’re a golfer you will surely think you’ve died and gone to heaven when you visit the Ring of Kerry. It’s undoubtedly a golfer’s paradise, with an abundance of parkland and links courses to choose from. There’s the famous Waterville links, one of Ireland’s top ranked golf courses; the majestic Ring of Kerry Golf Club with its stunning views and stateof-the-art clubhouse; not forgetting the beautiful course in Kenmare; Parknasilla Resort’s 12 holes; Killorglin Golf Club; the wonderful Dooks links and the new Hogs Head Golf Club. Choose one, or choose them all, and if you get distracted by the views on your round, well that’s just par for the course.

Outdoor Activity Centres

Kerry’s rugged landscape lends itself to many outdoor pursuits. The weather doesn’t come into play with these activities because it doesn’t matter what it’s like when you’re doing something mad outdoors! The Ring of Kerry offers two dedicated activity centres – Eclipse Ireland, Blackwater, near Kenmare and Cappanalea near Caragh Lake. The latter is a public outdoor and education training centre aimed mainly at schools, but it also offers its many activities to groups and individuals. Eclipse caters for groups, couples, individuals, little kids and grownup big kids. Rock climbing, raft building, kayaking and yes, even mud surfing are among the many activities on offer.

15

15

On your bike!

The best way to enjoy the beautiful, picturesque Ring of Kerry is surely by bike. Yes, there are certainly a few hills along the way but for every climb you’re usually rewarded with a stunning view and then of course a most welcome free-wheel downhill. At 179 kilometres, it’s doable in a day but unless you’re taking part in the annual Charity Ring of Kerry cycle (see What’s On page in this guide), why would you want to? Find out about all the cycle routes at your local tourist office, hire a bike if you don’t have your own, grab some water and a snack and away you go. Don’t forget the Factor 50 and the rain/wind protection. You could need both in the same day.

18

17

Angling

The Ring of Kerry is a haven for anglers. There are so many opportunities to suit every taste – rivers, lakes and of course the omnipresent sea. You will need a licence/permit for freshwater fishing and there are some rules and regulations, so be sure to ask for advice at your local tackle shop or Tourist Information Centre. Kerry is world-famous for its Salmon & Trout fishing. Our wild Atlantic Ocean, coupled with the fresh water that flows from the mountain peaks, provides a good spawning ground. Boats and ghillies are available for hire locally.

16

Sea fishing

Surrounded as it is by clean, clear sea plus the great natural advantage of the warm water coming directly from the Gulf Stream, Kerry is one of Europe’s favourite Sea Fishing destinations. Well-equipped licensed boats can be chartered, along with all the tackle you might need. Add to that an experienced, knowledgeable skipper at the helm, and you can be off for an enjoyable day on the ocean wave. Who knows, you might even bring back the ‘bacon’ that evening for the family.

GAA

For those of you not in the know, GAA stands for Gaelic Athletic Association. It’s an amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting the Gaelic games. In Kerry it’s more of a religion. Fiercely and justifiably proud of our wonderful sporting teams, Kerry fans will be happy to talk GAA to you anytime, any place. Sporting legend, MickeyNed O’Sullivan, hails from Kenmare. He has the dubious honour of being the only All-Ireland winning captain not to collect the famous trophy as he was knocked unconscious during the match and woke up in hospital sometime after it was all over. Another local legend is Pat Spillane from Templenoe, whose nephews and son have now made names for themselves in the Kerry teams.

The Strawberry Field Pancake Cottage

Don’t miss out on this lovely little quirky place, located between Sneem and Moll’s Gap. It’s open 7 days a week until 17th June and then every day except Tuesdays between 18th June and 2nd September, from 11.00 am – 5.15 pm. You won’t be able to decide whether to have a savoury or a sweet pancake, so you’ll have to have both. Local produce is often used in their cooking and presentation. The Cottage features an outdoor terrace for the odd day that you might be able to sit out, and the inside is adorned with paintings by one of the talented owners, Margaret. The other talented owner, Peter, knocks up intricate and unusual masterpieces of a different kind in his workshop. These are for sale, along with many other things, in the on-site gift shop. www.strawberryfieldireland.com.

21

Sneem Sculpture Park & Garden of Senses

The picturesque village of Sneem boasts a few eyecatching sculptures in and around the town. In addition, the designated Sculpture Park, located just behind the village, features a unique display of fascinating international sculpture, which includes The Peaceful Panda, donated by the People’s Republic of China, and The Angry Christ from Singapore. A serene walkway along the banks of the Sneem River takes you to the small but inspiring Garden of Senses, alive with colours and aromas. The Gardens include a bird island and a dedicated picnic area.

20

You’ll find a warm welcome at this woodturning workshop and gallery, situated at Blackwater Bridge, in between Kenmare and Sneem. If you’re lucky, you’ll get to see a demonstration and you’ll learn the process of turning a lump of wood into a beautiful finished work of art. Much of the wood used is sourced locally and some more exotic timbers from New Zealand are also utilised. The hand-crafted bowls, platters, boxes and sculptures make lovely presents or keepsakes. www.blackwaterwoodturners.com.

22

Fairy Trails

You’re probably aware that Ireland is home to many a leprechaun, but did you know that fairies are competing with leprechauns to become as well established in the country? These fascinating little beings are very clever you know. They have built the most intricate and detailed houses that will captivate the imagination of the child in you – be you 8 or 80. There are 3 trails to locate and follow on the Ring – one in Sneem, one in Parknasilla and a third one in Derrynane. There’s also one to be found at the Bonane Heritage Centre, a few miles from Kenmare. Be sure to tread carefully though. www.irishfairytrails.com

Take a Dive

Kenmare Bay Diving are the local experts in whatever you want to know about Snorkelling and Scuba Diving. They offer daily diving trips and scenic boat rides throughout the summer to tranquil island lagoons. Their 3 hour ‘Try a Dive’ course is suitable for ages 12 years and over. The adventure begins with a concise diving theory briefing after which you’ll be whisked away by speedboat to a beautiful offshore island. Said island is more often than not Sherky Island, which is a mere stone’s throw from Oyster Bed Pier in Sneem. Kenmare Bay is a special area of conservation and plays host to an interesting array of marine diversity. There are also trips available for qualified and experienced divers – and for those of you who prefer to stay on rather than under the water, you can just go along for the ride. Full details can be found on www.kenmarebaydiving.com or phone Paul on 087 6993 793.

Blueberry Hill Farm

Just half a mile from Sneem, and covering an area of around 20 acres, lies this highly-praised, expertly-run, family-friendly pet farm. Kids of all ages will enjoy a hugely interactive and hands-on experience petting and feeding a wide variety of animals and they can also take part in one of the creative courses available. Coomakista Pass

25

Whichever way you arrive at Coomakista Pass, be it from Caherdaniel or via Waterville, you will be amazed when you reach the summit. 700 feet above sea level, the panoramic views awaiting you are quite spectacular. If you travel there by bike, the reward will be that much sweeter, and the relief immense. There are plenty of parking spaces so jump out of the car (or off the bike), soak up the fabulous views and simply take time to enjoy this natural wonder.

Staigue Stone Fort

26

Derrynane House & National Park

Daniel O’Connell was a lawyer, politician and statesman. He became known as ‘The Great Liberator’ on account of successfully campaigning for equal rights for all Irish people and then by playing a major role in the international movement to abolish slavery. Derrynane was his family home - and what a location it is! With no less than 300 acres to enjoy, the Derrynane National Park comprises stunning beaches, sub-tropical gardens, coastal and woodland walks and at its hub, is the O’Connell ancestral pile which they started building back in 1825 and opened to the public in 1967. So much history and beauty at your fingertips …… and a Fairy trail! What more could you want? www.derrynanehouse.ie

27

Stone forts are a common feature on the landscape of the west of Ireland but by far the most impressive of these is to be found 3 miles west of Sneem. Staigue Fort is an ancient ring fort, built sometime between 300 and 400 AD. Although the word ‘fort’ suggests to us a construction of military significance, the size of most examples indicates that they were merely fortified farms - each in the ownership of a single family. Staigue is an exception to this assumption and was at various times thought to be an astronomical observatory, a royal residence, a theatre, an emporium, a defensive citadel or indeed all of these things! www.theringofkerry.com/staigue-fort

28

Coral Beach

There are only two of these in the whole of Ireland……and the other one is in County Galway! So what is it? Well it’s a gorgeous little geological gem of a beach – pink in colour and composed of dry and sun-bleached algae. The only problem you have, is actually finding it. Its ‘address’ is ‘near Gleesk Pier’ which itself is ‘near Sneem’ and it’s part of the Kerry Geopark. Head out of Sneem towards Castlecove and keep your eyes peeled. You’ll be sorry if you miss this unique little place. www.theringofkerry.com/coral-beach-sneem

Charlie Chaplin Statue

When Charlie Chaplin first arrived in Waterville in the late 1950s, all indications were that he would never return! His friend Walt Disney, had apparently recommended the Kerry town as the perfect place for fly-fishing. However, when the Hollywood legend and his family turned up at the Butler Arms Hotel they were told, “Sorry, there’s no room at the inn.” Disappointed, Charlie and Co headed for Kenmare but were pursued at speed by a member of the family who owned the Butler Arms. Determined to save the day, the hotelier persuaded Chaplin to return - after booting his own family out of the hotel! As a result, the Chaplins became regular visitors to Waterville and a bronze statue was erected in Charlie’s honour and unveiled in 1998.

Potty about Pottery

It’s little wonder that there’s a fabulous array of distinctive pottery created and sold in many outlets around the Ring of Kerry. Drawing inspiration from the beautiful landscapes, seascapes & fishing villages, these individual designs are a joy to view and purchase, making special mementos of your time on the Ring. Skellig Pottery in Ballinskelligs and Cara Turner Ceramics located in Castlecove are two notable places to visit. Classes for all ages and abilities are available at Skellig Pottery throughout the summer. Cara Turner is in her 29th year of business, continuing a long family tradition which began with her parents back in the 70’s. Both businesses are part of the Crafts co-op, which is located in Gallery 1, Cahersiveen. www.skelligpottery.com www.caraturnerceramics.com

37

Skellig Ring

Skellig Ring, an 18km route linking Portmagee, Valentia Island and Waterville, has the great distinction of being included in the Lonely Planet Guide. It’s a wild and scenic area boasting colourful houses and walking trails and its own little bit of history. There’s a beautiful beach at Ballinskelligs and a weekly market in the summer months. Skellig Michael is never far from view. Well worth a detour off the beaten track.

Valentia Island

36

Skellig Michael & Little Skellig

Skellig Michael is of course synonymous with Star Wars these days. The location scouts were no doubt drawn to it by G B Shaw’s description – “an incredible, impossible, mad place.” Aside from the Star Wars link though, Skellig Michael, together with its smaller sister, Little Skellig, is steeped in history dating back to the 6th Century when a group of Christian Monks founded a Monastery there. Remains can still be found on the Island, which is also home to many breeding seabirds. It became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 and is a hugely popular attraction these days. Book your boat trip from Portmagee, but beware – it’s not for the faint-hearted! There are 618 pretty old and uneven steps to negotiate before you reach the awe-inspiring summit.

31

38

In 1866, Valentia Island became the site of the first commercially-viable transatlantic telegraph cable from America. It continued to operate this service for 100 years. Valentia Lighthouse at Cromwell Point is included as one of the 12 Great Lighthouses of Ireland. But there is so much more to this Island than its distinctive history. It is rugged and charming, with a fabulous coastline, stunning vistas and beautiful coastal walks. Be sure to visit Bray Head and the incredible Geokaun Mountain & Cliffs. See pages 22 and 23 for more about Valentia Island. www.valentiaisland.ie

Barracks Heritage Centre

39

40

Casting its mighty shadow over the little seaside town of Cahersiveen, is the Old Barracks building. It’s now of course many years since it was used for its primary purpose of housing the local branch of the Royal Irish Constabulary. Originally built from 1870 to 1875, it endured a very chequered history until 1996, when it assumed its current identity and was officially opened as The Heritage Centre of Cahersiveen. So basically nowadays, it’s a centre of historic, cultural and social information. As mentioned above, the barracks itself has a dramatic and fascinating history but within its walls you’ll find all kinds of interesting information pertaining to aspects of Irish life in the locality. www.oldbarrackscahersiveen.com

Kerry International Dark-Sky Reserve

42

This is a very unique attraction in Kerry and in fact is the only village of its kind in Europe. It’s modelled on a typical 18th century rural community and offers a fascinating insight into the challenges of life during famine times. The buildings have been created and furnished in exactly the style of the era so that the visitor is transported right into the world of the bog village. There’s a bar and fine restaurant adjoining the museum, so the scene is set for an enjoyable visit as you soak up all the information and experiences available at Glenbeigh’s Bog Village Museum. www.kerrybogvillage.ie

Most people who visit Kerry appreciate that it’s a pretty unique place. But do you know just how unique our skies are? A dedicated area, called an Isthmus and measuring 700 sq km in size, was awarded one of only three Gold Tier Awards on the PLANET by the International Dark-Sky Association. What’s more, it’s the only Gold Tier in the Northern Hemisphere. This means that on a clear night many constellations can be viewed with the naked eye in this portion of unpolluted sky. Pick your night, wait for the sun to set and prepare to be amazed. www.kerrydarksky.com

Kerry Bog Village

Be a Skywalker at Kell’s Bay Gardens

Recently opened, The Skywalk at Kell’s Bay Gardens is the country’s longest rope bridge, measuring 112 feet. The walk restores access to a section of the Gardens that had been cut off for several years, courtesy of a bad storm that hit the Skellig Coast in 2009. Fear not if you suffer from vertigo – the bridge only rises to 36ft across the river Delligeenagh so it should be doable for all budding ‘Skywalkers’. The Gardens also feature rare plants and an exotic waterfall. www.kellsbay.ie

Caragh Lake

A large and scenic freshwater lake – situated between the lively town of Killorglin and the village of Glenbeigh - Caragh is one of the many freshwater lakes in Kerry that’s included within a substantial Special Area of Conservation. It’s a magnet for the fishing fraternity and other visitors who are attracted by the relaxing ambience and stunning scenery. There is a number of boat-owners around the banks of Caragh, offering recreational and relaxing trips on the water and there’s plenty of accommodation to be found in the locality. Be sure to put Caragh Lake on your itinerary!

Kerry Creamery Experience

Listry Creamery, known as the Kerry Creamery Experience, has been lovingly recreated to replicate its original working model. It brings history to life as visitors glimpse a snapshot of how creameries, now consigned to history, were once the pivotal point of rural life. Discover how local small farmers – and their families – supported the dairy industry long before large tankers took to the roads. Younger visitors will love meeting the animals and exploring the farm-themed playground. No visit is complete without calling in to the cosy tea-room for some delicious home-made treats. Private Tours, Birthday Parties and School Tours can be arranged by appointment. Lissavane East, Listry, Milltown, Co Kerry. 087 947 3322 / 066 9767070 or find on Facebook.

Adopt a Sheep

Where else but in Ireland would you be able to adopt a sheep? For just €50 a year, you can become an adoptive parent at Kissane Sheep Farm, located in the scenic area of Moll’s Gap between Kenmare and Killarney. You can even give your sheep a name and in return receive a certificate. The aim is to preserve the heritage of the mountain sheep that have been living in the hills and on the roads for over 100 years and also to help maintain a traditional family farm which has been in the Kissane family for many generations. The working farm also offers Sheep Dog demonstrations by appointment – a great spectacle for any age. Unfortunately you won’t be able to adopt any of their splendid Sheep Dogs. www.adopt-a-sheep.ie

Shop till you drop

47

A visit to the Ring of Kerry would not be complete without a few mementos by which to remember it. You won’t find Department Stores or many standard High Street shops around the Ring, but who needs those when you’re on holiday. What you will find, in almost every town and often in-between towns too, are unique little shops selling local craft, art, pottery, photography and clothing, plus much more. Perfect gifts for yourself or a loved one. Many shops offer a postage and also an on-line service.

46

37

Eat, drink and be happy

There are so many places to eat and drink around the Ring. Wherever you are and wherever you’re going, you will find a choice of cafes, pubs, bars and restaurants. All serving fabulous food – whether it’s a bowl of homemade soup and some fresh, warm soda bread, a full blown 3 course meal or a simple piece of delicious cake. Much of the food is sourced locally so you know it’s going to be fresh and tasty. The town of Kenmare rivals Kinsale for the title ‘gourmet capital of Ireland’, with its many award-winning restaurants and top-rated eateries.

Live Music & Craic

In the summer months, you’ll find plenty of venues around the Ring of Kerry that offer live music. It could be anything - background pianist, harpist, duo, trad band or a full-on band. Many venues specialise in traditional Irish music and entertainment. Whatever it is, it’ll definitely be great craic! The Irish know how to have fun and we like our guests to be part of that fun. We’re also great singers which means that it’s possible that a song could start up anywhere, any time. If you happen to be in the vicinity when it does, you might well be called upon to ‘Give us a song’ so have your party piece ready!

St Brendan’s Well

9

Out in the boggy west of the island, where the lonely vistas are worthy of some lost world; look out for signs to this ancient religious site which still attracts a smattering of pilgrims every year. Legend has it that St Brendan sailed here from Dingle in the 5th Century, scaled the cliffs, found a couple of dying pagans and anointed them; the first Christian converts on the island. Please note – depending on the weather, wellies might be the best choice of footwear for visiting this attraction. www.valentiaisland.ie/explore-valentia/st-brendans-well

Tetrapod Trackway

The Tetrapod imprints are thought to date from Devonian times – somewhere between 350 and 370 million years ago. This site is of international significance as it represents the transition of life from water to land – a momentous turning point in evolution - and it provides the oldest reliablydated evidence of four legged vertebrates (amphibians) moving over land. The Valentia Island Tetrapod footprints are the most extensive of the four Devonian trackways in the world. Access to the track way is via a pathway down to the rocks. www.valentiaisland.ie/explore-valentia/tetrapod-trackway/
