Take a leap!

Clonakilty was an official Jungle City in 2012 and over 20 jungle animals are still to be found all over the town. Some, like the elephants and crocodiles, are easier to spot but the fun is discovering an exotic bird in a tree or an unusual tiger while you go about your daily shopping or walk around the town. Look out for Jungle City maps in outlets around town.

Be prepared to swing, climb, jump, scream, laugh and drop around Clonakilty’s exciting Aerial Trekking High Ropes Course at up to 40ft above the ground. Located beside the Park Cinema on the Quality Hotel Complex it has two levels, you can choose to do Level 1 or both Level 1 & 2 if you are brave enough! Perfect for individual or family adventure, team building, or corporate groups. Level 1 has 13 challenging elements such as balancing on cables, leaping on swinging logs and cargo nets while you are 17ft off the ground. This course is 65m long and is perfect for a beginner climber. Level 2 also has 13 thrill inducing elements, all while you are 40ft above ground! Not for the faint-hearted, the elements include rope bridges, cargo nets, balancing on cables and a few extra challenges to excite even the biggest adrenaline junkie. You can also have a go on the climbing tower, the 100m zip line or what about the power fan jump? Take a 65ft freefall in complete safety!

Catch one of the latest Box Office releases at the Park Cinema. A great way to spend some time on a blustery and rainy afternoon. See The Southern Star for cinema listings.

3 4 A little piece of food heaven

A food lover’s heaven, you’ll find an amazing range of cheeses, meats, fish, salads, breads and pastries, savouries, sweet treats, pre-prepared dishes and much more sourced from just around the corner and from further afield. If you’re planning a meal at home, a dinner party or a picnic this summer, you’ll be spoilt for choice! See www.www.supervaluclon.ie

Perched on the edge of a long sea inlet, this friendly tourist village is dominated by the ruins of a 13th century abbey. The abbey was founded by the Franciscan order in 1240 A.D., on the site of a 6th century monastic settlement founded by Saint Molaga. The name Timoleague comes from the Irish for House of Molaga (Tigh Molaga).

See a road bowling match

Road bowling is played mostly in Armagh and County Cork, particularly West Cork in which competitors attempt to take the fewest throws to propel a metal ball along a predetermined course of country roads. Big crowds of spectators often line the roads to watch, bet on the outcome and proffer advice to their favoured competitor in the course of a match or ‘score’. To find out whether a match is planned nearby ask locally or better still, see the What’s On or sports section in The Southern Star newspaper.

49

Makers’ Quarter

Clonakilty has always been known for its vibrant creative community. One little corner of the town hosts several of these makers and designers and has been recently nicknamed the ‘Makers’ Quarter’. Ashe Street has become home to the Clonakilty toy-maker Little Green Dot, and long-time West-Cork based artist Annabel Langrish has also opened a base here. Ceramicist Etain Hickey has been on this street for many years, just down from artist and illustrator, Kieran Bennett. All of these are only around the corner from Clonakilty Community Arts Centre on Astna Square and from the Hill Gallery on McCurtain Hill. This is only a taste of the creativity in Clonakilty and this mini-trail is perfect to wander for a few hours and meet the people that make this town so unique.

Great attractions across West Cork 1. Skibbereen Heritage Centre

6. Michael Collins & Irish freedom

Located in the beautifully restored Gasworks building, the Skibbereen Heritage Centre houses the Great Famine Commemoration Exhibition as well as The Lough Hyne Visitor Centre where you can admire the salt-water aquarium depicting life in Lough Hyne while you watch an informative film of the reserve.

Michael Collins House Museum in Clonakilty is located in a restored Georgian building at No.7 Emmet Square. It tells the story of Ireland’s struggle for independence focusing on Tadgh an Asna, O’Donovan Rossa and of course, Michael Collins. As well as a number of displays there is an audio-visual room and a gift shop. www.michaelcollinshouse.ie. Another wonderful historical attraction is the Michael Collins Centre, located just off the Timoleague Road, where visitors can experience live illustrated presentations three times daily, audiovisuals and a fine collection of Collins memorabilia. The centre is situated in Michael Collins Memorial Park, which overlooks the magnificent Argideen Valley. The park contains a number of memorials dedicated to Collins and the fight for Irish freedom. www.michaelcollinscentre.com. Collins’ birthplace at Woodfield, also near Clonakilty, is another important historical site.

2. Mizen Visitor Centre, Mizen Head

Situated at the end of the Mizen Peninsula, the visitor centre is a fantastic place to visit. The recently refurbished bridge across the massive crevice in the rock is not for the fainthearted, but a stunning place to take photographs, or simply listen to the waves crashing below. The keeper’s kitchen and bedroom at the signal station at the end of the walk has been preserved as it was, as a tribute to the lifestyle of the men of the Irish Lights. There are many fascinating displays to be seen, both here at the signal station and back at the interactive visitor centre at the start.

7. Bantry House & Gardens, Bantry

Bantry House is the ancestral home of the Earls of Bantry and is still owned and run by direct descendants of the Earls. The house and gardens command stunning views over the bay and the gardens which include lawn tennis courts, mazes and the famous climb of 103 steps, are stunning to explore. Tours of the house are given and there is a café on site.

3. Model Railway Village, Clonakilty

Get an overview of the area in miniature, by visiting the Model Railway Village where the towns of West Cork are beautifully captured on a scale of 1:24. The working replica of the West Cork Railway is delightful as it chugs along through towns and countryside. There is also an informative Exhibition Centre, indoor play room and cafe facility on-site. The miniature villages, with their working toy trains, were recently restored, repainted and rebuilt. The real-size Choo-Choo road train that goes into town is a great way to explore Clonakilty. www.modelvillage.ie

8. West Cork’s Islands

Bere, Cape Clear, Sherkin, Dursey, Garnish, Whiddy, Heir and Long are the top inhabited islands in West Cork, all with their own unique attractions and appeal. Why not learn about the heritage and history of these magical places, enjoy wonderful local food, take a walking or bus tour with a local guide or experience a thrilling ride in a high speed boat and see the beauty and nature of the sea. Then, depending on which island you visit, settle down in a friendly pub, enjoy a drink and get to know the locals (most of the islands listed are inhabited). Visit www.westcorkislands.com

4. Charles Fort, Kinsale

Charles Fort is open all year to visitors and is one of the best surviving examples of a 17th Century star-shaped fort. Much of its original 1678 construction remains. The fort was actively used by the military until 1922. It is also a popular civil weddings venue now, too.

9. Uillinn – West Cork Arts Centre

The Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre is located right in the centre of Skibbereen and the imposing corten steel structure can be seen from most angles in the town. There are exhibitions on throughout the summer featuring works by local, national and international artists. There is a coffee shop on the ground floor which is a popular spot with both locals and visitors alike.

5. Rosscarbery adventures

Rosscarbery is fast becoming the action-packed family centre of West Cork. Head to Smugglers Cove to play the piratethemed adventure golf or try your hand at the Smuggler’s Maze. During July and August try out Ireland’s largest Maize Maze. Hit a few golf balls in the driving range or relax on the panoramic sundeck overlooking Rosscarbery. va na tA o htped egare ts aL eht ,teef 3 f lddap pu dnaa ep eht si noog dna draob eMake r ot ecalp tcefr taob trip to the Lagoon Activity Centre to enjoy pedal boatda ssel eht rof ro kayak a tne .oot reffo no s reht suorutnev e a r e p l e n t y elddep fo surf boards and canoeing.
