Getting in the spirits Sheth returns to roots to offer area a liquor store with a twist

eturning to his hometown to invest in and support the community in which he grew up, Keval Sheth believes Tree City Wine and Spirits will quickly become an important part of McMinnville and Warren County. “I’m proud to be back in McMinnville,” Sheth, a 2004 graduate of Warren County High School, said in opening Tree City Wine and Spirits on Sparta Street in the former Don’s Supply Company building. “I’m hoping to give McMinnville a store that not only I can be proud of but that the people of McMinnville can be proud of.”

Sheth said when he began planning Tree City Wine and Spirits, he wanted it to be different than most stores, offering something to everyone and every taste. Sheth pointed to the wide selection of liquors and wines he offers at Tree City. “We offer a large assortment of imported and domestic wines,” Sheth said, noting Stonehaus, produced in Crossville, is an example of local tastes that can be found at Tree City. As for international wines, the store can take wine fans around the globe. “If you want to try to expand your reach, we do have a large international selection,” Sheth said. “We will showcase wines from particular areas of the world and then offer special discounts so you can try wines you may not have otherwise had the opportunity to taste.”

Along with wines, Sheth said Tree City offers a wide variety of liquors, including vodka, whiskey, rum and more, and if he doesn’t have it in stock, he will do his best to get it. He also has the old standbys which are popular locally, like numerous flavors of Jack Daniels. “Everyone around here wants some Jack,” he said. To accompany one’s drink, Sheth has a well-stocked humidor with a large assortment of cigars ranging from everyday smokes to top-shelf cigars. “We have one of the finest selections of cigars in McMinnville,” he said. For those with beer tastes, Tree City has a large collection of craft beers from around the world. “We have over 70 craft beers in stock,” he revealed, adding he also has an ice-

cold walk-in cooler for favorites such as Budweiser and Miller. “We also intend to have a growler-filling station. And, I’m proud to say we are an Untappd verified venue,” Being verified means when a new beer is added to the Tree City inventory, anyone following Tree City on the Untappd phone app will get an online notification. Tree City Wine and Spirits is located at 909 Sparta Street and may be reached by calling 931-304-8300. The restaurant is known for its pizza and steaks, but offers just about everything from fine Italian cuisine to a king-sized cheeseburger. “We give you more reasons to open our door than anyone else,” said Gondola owner Jimmy Zavogiannis. “We know

you can get in your car and drive anywhere to eat. We want you to choose Gondola because of the quality and the variety. We have something on the menu for everyone. It’s hard for me to imagine someone coming here and not finding something they like.” Gondola is open 365 days a year from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. With those extended hours, the restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. “We owe it to our customers to be open

at their convenience, not our convenience,” said Zavogiannis. Gondola is in its seventh year at its current location. Zavogiannis first opened Gondola in McMinnville in 1989 after years in the restaurant business. He first started working at a Gondola in Cookeville in 1972 that was owned by one of his good friends. Today, there are a number of Gondola restaurants around Middle Tennessee, including locations in Tullahoma, Lebanon and Crossville.

While these restaurants are independently owned, Zavogiannis says they are loosely affiliated in that they have largely the same menu and all specialize in pizza and steak. One popular choice for Gondola diners is the buffet bar. Zavogiannis says this offers customers the opportunity to go back for seconds, but he doesn’t want the buffet to define his restaurant. “The thing I’ve noticed over the years is the places where there are buffet bars, for some reason they tend to blind the customer and they can’t see the other menu items,” said Zavogiannis. ‘We’re not a buffet place.” For customers who want smaller servings, Gondola has started offering a meat and three, or a meat and two. If you leave room for dessert, Gondola boasts one of the most extensive selections of homemade cakes in the area. Zavogiannis attributes his success to his longtime customers and his longtime employees. He says Gondola has a workforce of around 40 employees. “For me it’s been gratifying to see Gondola as a stepping stone for a lot of successful people,” said Zavogiannis. “We have a lot of young people who work here in high school or come back to work over the summer while they’re in college and it’s rewarding for Jimmy Zavogiannis has guided Gondola since opening in me to see them go on to successful careers.” 1989. In business since 1963, owners Earl and Hazel Barr have one more reason to celebrate. Along with providing top-quality merchandise to their customers, they are celebrating 54 years of success. The story of Barr’s Furniture is a reflection of the great American dream. A Barr family philosophy of offering customers a better value began more than a half century ago and is still

evident when you visit the business today. It serves as a wonderful example of how a locally operated store can thrive in this country. In 1974, the Barr’s Furniture moved to its present location at 643 Beersheba Street. As the business grew so did the building, which has undergone four additions. This now gives the store 18,000 square feet of display space and 9,000 square feet of warehouse space.

Barr’s first began as a surplus store selling overstocked items from major-brand companies. As the business grew, so did the demand for quality at lower prices. After five years, Earl and Hazel decided to buy directly from the manufacturer. “I want to give the customer as good a value for their dollar as you can get. That’s why we sell at discount prices,” said Earl. Barr’s offers a full line of home furnishings and carries famous name brands such as La-Z-Boy, Broyhill, Lane, Pulaski, Sealy, Restonic bedding, just to name a few. The Barrs are known for their community involvement and Earl has served on the Chamber of Commerce board of directors. In addition, he is on the board of Security Federal Savings Bank and is a member of the Noon Rotary Club, the Home Builders Association, and Gideon’s International. While very active in the community, you can usually find both of them behind the counter or on the display floor waiting to serve you with a friendly smile. As with any business which has been operating for more than 50 years, Earl says he has seen the industry change over the years. “Styles have changed, products have changed. Making it work

Industrial Development Board strives to create jobs by

reating jobs and attracting industry -- that’s the main function of the McMinnvilleWarren County Industrial Development Board. Known as the IDB, it’s composed of 10 members of the community, five appointed by the city and five by the county. They oversee the work of director Don Alexander, who is a fulltime employee. Tommy Foster is the current IDB president and is serving his second consecutive one-year term. Brent Nunley is vice president. The IDB has been instrumental in bringing industries to this community for decades, including major employers like Yorozu and Bridgestone, which located here in the 1980s. Those two companies are now the largest private employers in Warren County, both with more than 1,000 workers. In recent years, the IDB has landed companies such as Miniature Precision Components and Sansin, which are both automotive related. “We have a diversified board with representatives from different segments of the community,” said Foster, a realtor. IDB member Joe Pugh is a bank president. Nunley is McMinnville’s postmaster. Mike Millard manages a lumber company. The IDB is often the first place industry representatives turn when thinking of expansion locations. As IDB director, Alexander is responsible

for handling their RFIs, requests for information. This is basic information about our community that industry representatives can peruse to get a feel for what we have to offer. It’s the goal for the RFI to lead to additional contact and more questions about the area. This can include tours of available buildings and industrial property. That is where spec buildings come into play. These are building shells that are constructed to give industries a head start in their relocation or expansion projects. A spec building can be customized to fit the needs of that particular industry. In offering a fitting comparison, Foster says realtors wouldn’t sell many houses if they took potential buyers to an empty field and told them to visualize the home that could one day be standing there. He says it’s much easier to take them to a home that’s move-in ready. By the same token, Foster says it’s easier to sell industry representatives on this area if there’s already a building in the works. This lets them know much of the groundwork has already been completed and it will shorten their workload. The IDB is currently considering its fourth spec building. It would have 42-foot ceilings and be 50,000 square feet with the ability to easily expand. The IDB’s first spec building was purchased by Morrison Tool & Fab, which is now Morrison Industries. The spec building was key in helping that company expand to meet its growing

needs. Spec building No. 2 was leased by Miniature Precision Components. Initially 50,000 square feet, the spec building has already been expanded once for a total of 100,000 square feet. Spec building No. 3 was leased by Sansin, which works closely with Yorozu in building automotive parts. For companies which do want to start from the ground up, the IDB has two certified sites available at Mt. View Industrial Park. One major perk is the IDB can help with financing. This is often done in exchange for a certain number of jobs created. “We realize small businesses are just as important as large businesses,” said Foster. “One thing that really helps us in this county is that we have rail service available. The new road to Murfreesboro has also helped create interest. We are always looking for grants and ways we can fund our projects.”
