Martha Cove gets top marks from cruising ‘yachties’ THE regular Martha Cove cruise weekend was a great success with 13 boats from cruising divisions sailing in for their annual southern end of Port Phillip meeting and social event over the Melbourne Cup long weekend. Several ocean-going veterans have completed thousands of miles of sailing in Australia and elsewhere, including Hugh Pilsworth who completed two circumnavigations in February. Another was a couple who had just completed 32,000 kilometres in their 14-metre catamaran and a couple who sailed 51,500 kilometres to Osaka, Japan, as well as Canada and through the Pacific. Others had sailed in the San Francisco-to-Hawaii race before

returning to Australia. The weekend was to celebrate family cruising on the bay and welcome these ocean travellers. The cruise group specialises in assisting families gain experience and training to give them the knowledge and confidence to go sailing and visit interesting places as well as sail to more distance destinations. “We have many partners and female skippers who also sail ocean vessels and it was great to meet new members and younger families who are enjoying bay and ocean cruising this year,” the Cruising Yacht Association of Victoria’s Ian Reichelt said. “We were very grateful to Martha

Cove marina for accommodating all the boats and making our stay such an enjoyable event. The staff were so helpful as were the many volunteers who assisted us make this year’s event so successful.” The organisers thanked Prom Ocean Australia which supplied welcome packs; RACV Marine Insurers; Ian Ross of AUDI Mornington; Frank Hammond of Horizon Sailmakers, and Karina Winery which hosted a wine tasting and supplied wine for the barbecue. “Mornington Peninsula is a fabulous area to visit and I would recommend spending a lot more time at this end of the bay,” Mr Reichelt said.

Art pops-up at Red Hill TWO Mornington Peninsula artists have teamed up to open a pop-up gallery at Red Hill. Potter Sandi Faulkner and contemporary gold and silversmith Katrina Newman will be available over two weeks to talk about their work and welcome visitors to shop 1/1016 Mornington-Flinders Road. After art school Faulkner, with almost 5O years’ pottery experience, trained under Viennese master potter Franz Kukowetz, of Terra Nigra. She was a production potter and teacher at the old Chelsea pottery in London. From her studio at Mt Martha she makes small batches and individual pieces using ash from the Outback and peninsula vegetation in the glazes. She says she is inspired by her coastal surroundings ... and, of course, the birds. Newman, a gold and silversmith

for 30 years, studied at Canberra School of Art and Design at the ANU, Canberra. She works from her home studio at McCrae which has views across her bush garden to Port Phillip Bay and up to Arthurs Seat. Newman’s love of the coast and Australian landscapes are evident throughout her recent work. She uses the ancient technique of cuttlefish casting to create a unique style and will be happy to share the process with visitors. The gallery will be open 11am4.30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, from 23 November to 9 December. The artists will celebrate their collaboration with friends at a party at the gallery, 6-9pm, Friday 23 November.
