Nominations open for A-Day Awards JULIE Saunders earned the Mornington Peninsula 2021 Citizen of the Year Award partly for her role in cooking, packing and delivering three-course meals to around 60 needy households every Wednesday. She and a group of dedicated volunteers made 1200 meals which were delivered to mainly older residents during the COVID-19 lockdown. Ms Saunders also acts as an IP, or independent person. This voluntary position administered by the Department of Justice involves making herself available 24/7 to assist 12-17-year-olds who have been arrested. When a parent or guardian is not available an IP sits with that person to help them through the interview. She is a committee member for many local clubs and a keen historian writing several books on the history of Crib Point. Nominations for next year’s Australia Day awards, including community event of the year, are now open. “These awards are a wonderful opportunity to value a member of our community who has gone over and above in these difficult times,” the mayor Cr Despi O’Connor said. “If you’ve consistently put others ahead of yourself, served tirelessly and made a difference in our community, you can be nominated and recognised.” Other 2021 winners were Young Citizen of the Year Phoebe McShane; Community Event of the Year, Senior’s High Tea (Mary Budd); Community Spirit Award Josie D’Alia; Lifetime Achievement Award Michael Wunderly; and Lifetime Achievement Award Colin Blythe. Nominations close Friday 5 November. Plan for Sister THE Western Sister master plan is being exhibited online until 23 September. The plan takes into account community input to Mornington Peninsula Shire Council on the Sorrento Coastal and Marine Management Plan in 2018. The shire’s says the feedback inspired the new look and feel of the Western Sister headland and picnic area. The area covers the foreshore from the Sorrento Sailing Couta Boat Club to the Sullivan Bay car park, taking in the cultural and historic sites of Lavender Hill and the Western Sister. The area has an existing car park, picnic facilities, bay trail and beach access. The plan features an updated car park and picnic layout, all abilities beach access ramp, new toilet and bike racks, boardwalk and a reflective space. The shire says the design will “improve the connection to the historic sites in this unique and significant location”. “This plan draws on the vision, objectives and actions of the Sorrento Coastal and Marine Management Plan, committed to by the community and stakeholders and endorsed by Council in December 2018,” deputy mayor Cr Sarah Race said. Cr Susan Bissinger said community feedback received in the consultation stage would help shape designs for Western Sister. “Community comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated,” she said. Planned upgrades and improvements to the Western Sister precinct can be seen at mornpen.vic.gov.au/sorrentoforeshore Anyone with questions or comments about the plans can fill in the form at the site.
