Massages Unique to You When Jette Keis Hansen finished her training at Potomac Massage Training Institute in 2000, she was looking for a massage home. Jette worked at several places, but none lived up to her standards of client care and attention to details. In 2001, she opened Old Town Massage Center Inc.’s doors as a solo practitioner subletting from a Hypnotherapist. In 2002, Jette took on a suite in the same building and shortly thereafter started adding staff members some of whom remain on staff. In 2013, Old Town Massage Center had outgrown its three treatment rooms and the building was in a state of disrepair. Jette found a location on Duke Street at the corner of Quaker lane, with abundant parking, signage and street level entrance. Thus, adding an extra fourth treatment room, Old Town Massage Center moved to 3303 Duke Street. Staff and client base have continued to grow since 2013. The practice expanded last year and

now has seven treatment rooms and a classroom for instructional use. The space is bright, cheery and super clean. The staff is well qualified, offering more than 200 years of combined experience and an amazing list of treatment options. Old Town Massage Center is open seven days a week and offers online booking 24/7. In addition, Old Town Massage Center uses organic products. What we apply to our skin is absorbed into our blood stream.

health&wellness By Karl Smith, DDS, MS

Let 2020 Be Your Year for YOU While we know eating right, tossing out the cigarettes, and “sweating to the oldies” are all part of our typical New Year’s resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle, many of us are not aware of the overall health benefits of taking good care of our teeth and gums. Tooth decay, plaque and periodontal (gum) disease is a health problem that doesn’t normally get a lot of New Year’s resolution attention. In fact, although 80 percent of adults have some form of gum disease, many are not aware of the diagnosis, symptoms or its lasting effects. Poor oral health, gum disease, cavities, plaque buildup, etc., can contribute to other problems in the body. For example, people with gum disease are more likely to develop

6

diabetes or heart disease, and pregnant women increase their risk of delivering low-birth weight and premature babies. Causes & Symptoms Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects the soft and hard structures supporting your teeth. In its early stage, called gingivitis, gums become swollen and red due to inflammation and teeth and gums often bleed while brushing, which is the body’s natural response to the presence of harmful bacteria. In the more series form of periodontal disease, called periodontitis, gums pull away from the tooth as infection settles in, supporting gum tissues are destroyed, supportive jaw bone can

Ja n u a r y / F e b r u a r y 2 0 2 0 | FAIRFAXWOM AN.COM

be lost, and your teeth will loosen and eventually fall out. Diagnosing Periodontal Disease Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the treatment and prevention of periodontal (gum) disease. They are experts in the treatment of oral inflammation, plaque and bacteria. Periodontists are also trained in performing cosmetic periodontal procedures, and dental implants. Make it your New Year’s resolution to take better care of your mouth and teeth. Here are a few additional tips: • Brush twice daily: Your mouth is the front line for battling the bacteria that damages not only your teeth and gums, but also other organs and systems in your body. • Floss daily: Your toothbrush can’t reach between your teeth, which allow the bacterial film to build up. Daily flossing cleans the spaces between teeth, depriving bacteria of a safe haven. • Have at least two dental cleanings a year: Your dental hygienist supplements your daily brushing and flossing by cleaning the pockets where bacteria may escape your own routine. And the hygienist provides a vital screening for problems between dental checkups. • Get a regular annual dental checkup: Preventative dentistry is better for your health – and much cheaper – than dealing with major dental problems. Many people never visit a dentist until teeth require a root canal or even extraction, problems that are expensive to fix, and affect other teeth. • Visit a periodontist for gum evaluation: All adult patients should have full periodontal examination with charting accomplished once a year. This important assessment provides you and your dentist with a baseline measurement to record the pocket depth (space

between your teeth and gums), the presence of gum disease, gum recession, bleeding, tooth mobility and plaque buildup. • Eat, drink and be wary: The enemy of oral health is the group of natural bacteria that thrive on sugar and dissolve the protective enamel covering the teeth. Refined sugar is present in an overwhelming number of foods, and is part of the modern diabetes “epidemic.” This year, make a commitment to tooth- and health-conscious eating habits. • Consider a new and stronger smile: Getting dental implants and crowns for missing or broken teeth isn’t a luxury; these problems can have a domino effect that will leave you with shifting teeth, a vulnerability to gum disease and other growing damage. These necessary restorations will improve your quality-of-life and your long-term health. Improving your dental health and preventing tooth decay can have a larger health impact than just a healthy mouth and brighter teeth.

Dr. Karl Smith has been in dental practice for more than 34 years. He received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1981 and immediately entered General Practice in the US Air Force Dental Corps. He successfully completed three years of advanced education in the specialty of Periodontics with additional training in IV Sedation and Dental Implants in 1992, at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio and Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center. He won the John Pritchard Prize for outstanding research which included looking for a vaccine against bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Year after year, Dr. Smith has been consistently voted Top Dentist by Washingtonian Magazine, Northern Virginia Magazine, and Virginia Living.

5 Things to Consider Before Cosmetic Treatments If you are interested in nonsurgical cosmetic medical treatments, you will find many options available in a wide variety of settings. On one hand, this means that you have the luxury of choosing exactly the settings and treatments that feel right to you, but on the other hand, the numerous choices can be overwhelming, especially since medical procedures are not always easy to understand. Here are five important considerations to guide you in your search for aesthetic medical treatments that you can trust. The information here will augment and help you filter what you learn from websites, online reviews, and reports from friends and colleagues.

individuals with a wide range of professional backgrounds. You should have the opportunity to meet your clinician and learn about his/her qualifications before you commit to any treatment. Different procedures require different levels of expertise and you will evaluate whether this person has training that is commensurate with the treatment you are considering. A number of providers may or may not be appropriate for you, depending on specialty training and how frequently they perform your treatment. A cosmetic medical treatment remains a medical procedure with the accompanying risks, and you should choose your clinician with care.

medical treatment, preferably with the person who will be performing your procedure. The consultation for an aesthetic treatment does not have to be lengthy, but it should not feel rushed. There should be an appropriate review of your medical history, a relevant physical evaluation with a subsequent discussion of goals, and an understanding of the expected results of the procedure. This visit is also the time to ask about cost, side effects, downtime, and whom you should contact if you have any post-treatment issues or concerns, especially after hours. By the end of this visit you should know enough to feel comfortable with the proposed plan of treatment and your clinician. Finally, you should not be pressured to make a treatment decision on the day of your consultation if you want to do additional research before making that commitment.

Your Treatment It is appropriate for you to ask questions about the treatments recommended by your clinician, and it is in your best interest to understand why specific procedures/products have been chosen for you, in addition to possible alternative options. You should be informed about possible adverse effects, post-treatment downtime, and how long you can expect your results to last. Before undergoing any procedure, you should be given an informed consent document and review it with your clinician.

Comfort During Treatment: Analgesia You should be as comfortable and relaxed as possible during your treatment, and there are a number of analgesic options to relieve the discomfort that sometimes accompany a cosmetic procedure. In our practice, we offer a variety of analgesic alternatives including topical and injectable anesthetics, nitrous oxide gas,

and when appropriate, additional medications. Your clinician should discuss analgesic options for any recommended treatment.

Cost Cosmetic medical procedures are generally not covered by insurance, and pricing is based on fair market value. Before committing to a treatment with a specific practice, you should understand exactly how much you will be charged, including any ancillary costs. If your quoted cost is significantly high or low relative to what is customary in your area, we recommend that you proceed with caution. When considering an aesthetic medical treatment, you are most likely interested in rejuvenating your appearance in a way that is subtle and natural looking, and you hope to find a clinician you can trust; these goals are worth a careful evaluation of the options that are available to you. When cosmetic medical procedures are done with skill and care, patients enjoy both their treatment experience and their results.

Dr. Dennis Faludi is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery with the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Hand Surgery. A native of Northern New Jersey, Dr. Faludi graduated Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, with an M.D., followed by an orthopedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins University, where he trained further in reconstructive arthritis, hand, plastic, and microsurgery. After finishing the San Francisco Hand Surgery Fellowship, he settled in Northern Virginia to practice reconstructive, hand, and microsurgery. He pioneered the intraoperative use of lasers in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Faludi is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.

No More Suffering in Silence For years women have suffered in silence regarding their vaginal health. Thanks to celebrities and the media, more women are speaking up and seeking treatment for issues related to the aging vagina. Yes, the most intimate part of the female body – the vagina – ages, too. Aging and childbirth can cause issues such as vaginal dryness, looseness, loss of sensation and leaky bladders. As a female plastic surgeon, Dr. Gartside is sensitive to women seeking non surgical vaginal restoration options.Having suffered some of these symptoms herself, and understanding the changes in the female anatomy, she has personally sought after the perfect non-surgical treatment that offers today’s busy woman the total package in feminine rejuvenation

and she found it in ThermiVA. “I can speak from my own experience that ThermiVA works. For some patients it may help improve their symptoms and greatly prolong the need for surgery. For others, it may eliminate the need for surgery all together. It just depends on the severity of the diagnosis.” What is ThermiVA and how does it work? ThermiVa is a non-surgical vaginal treatment that uses physician-controlled radiofrequency energy. A thin probe heats the supportive tissues of the vagina, urethra and tissues beneath the bladder to stimulate blood vessels and collagen growth. This collagen stimulation results in immediate tightening of the labia and vagina. It reduces bladder leakage and increases vaginal moisture.

Dr. Roberta Gartside offers complimentary consultations for women interested in ThermiVA. All treatments are performed by Dr. Gartside herself.

How long does the treatment take? A single ThermiVa procedure takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes and is performed in the office. How soon can you start to see or feel results? Most women will start to notice improvements immediately after the first treatment. However, optimal results are seen upon completion of a series of three treatments. A follow up treatment at six or 12 months is usually recommended to maintain results. Is it painful? ThermiVa treatments are pain-free. Most patients report that treatments are gentle, relaxing and feel like an internal, warm massage. Do I need to have any tests prior to the treatment? No, but you will need to have a consultation with a physician to make sure you are a candidate. Candidacy includes a pelvic exam to ensure an undiagnosed condition or health concern does not exist. How long is recovery? There is no recovery and no downtime with ThermiVa treatments. You can even resume sexual activity the same day! Why ThermiVa vs. other vaginal rejuvenation treatments? ThermiVA is non-surgical and non-ablative. It uses radiofrequency, which is safer, more reliable and less invasive than other vaginal rejuvenation treatments that use lasers. With ThermiVA, women can resume all activities immediately after treatment. Lasers, on the other hand, can be painful and require longer recovery. Lasers are also often associated with a higher rate of complications. In addition, because ThermiVA does not use any hormones, it is a safe treatment option for women with breast cancer or those who have received chemotherapy. ThermiVA is a better option for women who desire a noninvasive solution that uniformly treats vaginal laxity, vaginal dryness and bladder leakage.

What Patients Are Saying: “ThermiVA has helped TREMENDOUSLY with my urine leakage and vaginal moisture!” “I’ve only had one treatment so far, but let me tell you, my husband and I LOVED it!” “I just received my third treatment. I love it! No more poise pads and I can run without smelling like urine. Happy is an understatement.” “Due to age and childbirth, I hated the appearance of my vagina. I am excited to say I feel pretty again down there!” “Intercourse has improved with the vaginal opening being tighter after just one treatment.” “ThermiVA has stopped stress incontinence by 90 percent!” “The night of the first procedure, I was moderately surprised. I heard I should feel a difference, but it was so much better. NO pain! And I felt moisture I had not felt in years! My husband so please he cried. I’m looking forward to my second treatment!”

Dr. Roberta Gartside is a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years of experience in the DC Metro area. She is a member of both American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the Treasure of the VA Society for Plastic Surgeons. She is also the Chair of the Board for the Society for Women’s Health Research. Dr. Roberta Gartside is one of the most experienced and sought after surgeons in the area. She takes the time to work one-on-one with her patients to customize their treatment plans to fit their specific needs and desires. In addition to a wide range of cosmetic surgery procedures, she also offers other non-invasive treatments such as Botulinumtoxin A (Botox), facial fillers (Juvederm, Voluma, etc.), microneedling, ThermiVA (vaginal) and nonsurgical body contouring (SculpSure).

health&wellness By Michelle Nguyen, MD, FACS, RPVI

Who Gets Varicose and Spider Veins? Your veins are vessels that carry blood from your body’s tissues to your heart where they pick up more oxygen and then recirculate throughout your body. The muscles in your legs aid in this process by contracting intermittently to help pump the blood upward, towards your heart. Each vein has tiny valves inside it to keep the blood flowing in the right direction; this one-way traffic prevents blood from flowing backwards or pooling in your legs. When a malfunction occurs in one or more of these valves, this becomes the common condition we call venous insufficiency or vein disease. Venous insufficiency is what causes varicose veins and spider veins. Causes & Risk Factors. Venous insufficiency, indiscriminately affects more than 30 million Americans. However, several

factors—ranging from family history to lifestyle habits—can increase your risk of developing this all-too-often under-diagnosed disorder. People with a family history of varicose veins or spider veins, regardless of health or other factors, tend to have the highest risk of developing venous insufficiency but there exists several other groups that may be equally predisposed. Age. While age may increase your risk for venous insufficiency, younger people are not immune. One medical study showed that approximately 25 percent of venous insufficiency occurred in people under the age of 50. The normal wear and tear of aging may cause the valves inside your veins to weaken and begin to function improperly, explaining the general increased risk that comes with

age. It is important to understand that the pain and discomfort often associated with venous insufficiency are not normal functions of aging and do not have to impact your quality of life. Venous insufficiency is a medical condition that can and should be treated. Gender. Women tend to get varicose veins more often than men. Hormonal changes that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause (or with the use of birth control pills) may raise a woman’s risk for developing varicose veins. A recent study showed that about two thirds of all varicose vein cases occurred in women. Pregnancy. During pregnancy, a woman’s body goes through unprecedented physical and hormonal changes. As a baby grows, the uterus puts increased pressure on the surrounding veins. Hormonal changes can also cause the walls of the veins to relax or weaken. These factors can combine to cause healthy and normal one-way vein valves in a woman’s body to stop working properly. When this happens, blood that should return to the heart instead pools and stagnates, resulting in bulging varicose veins predominantly found in the legs. If your are an expectant mother, your doctor can recommend many ways to keep you comfortable during your pregnancy—including regular, moderate exercise, plenty of rest, support stockings, and keeping your legs elevated—especially during the evening. In these cases, it is best to wait at least three months postpartum to seek treatment for venous insufficiency. Overweight. Being overweight puts added pressure on the entire body—this includes your entire vascular system and its veins. Increased pressure can enlarge veins causing damage to the valves that keep your blood flowing upward, toward the heart. Often, people with weight problems do

10

not get regular exercise, which can lead to general circulatory problems such as venous insufficiency. If you have a body mass index (BMI) over 25, you are at an increased risk for developing uncomfortable and unsightly varicose or spider veins. Lack of Movement. Standing for prolonged periods of time as a function of your profession or, likewise, sitting for an extended period—especially with your legs crossed—can increase your risk for venous insufficiency as this general lack of movement can lead to blood flowing backwards and pooling, causing varicose veins and spider veins. History of DVT. Patients who have experienced a deep vein thrombosis (DVT)—a blood clot that forms in a vein deep within the body (commonly in the leg or thigh)— may have an increased risk for developing varicose veins and spider veins. You may have heard about DVT in relation to sitting still for long periods, such as on airplanes. Any history of DVT is always a good reason to get checked for underlying venous insufficiency.

Michelle Nguyen MD, FACS, RPVI has more than 17 years of experience in clinical medicine. She attended the University of Virginia where she was named an Echols Scholar. She remained at UVA to complete her medical school training and then returned to the D.C. area and joined Georgetown University Medical Center for her residency training. Here she was later appointed Assistant Clinical Professor. She has a special interest in the treatment of venous ulcers, stasis dermatitis, sclerotherapy and minimally invasive vein care. Dr. Nguyen has performed over a thousand venous ablation procedures. Her dedication to her patients has resulted in her being named a Top Doctor in Washingtonian magazine.

Benefits of Cheek Fillers Cheek Augmentation, Facial Rejuvenation and Lifting of the Jaw Line Beginning in our 30s and 40s, our skin begins to lose volume and elasticity, and thus wrinkles and fine lines begin to form. Fortunately, the contour and shape of your features can be enhanced with non-surgical techniques that do not require down time. There are specific dermal fillers that can lift and restore lost volume to the cheeks and tighten the jaw line. Cheek fillers can help sculpt and add youthful plumpness to the skin. The wrinkles and folds around your nose and mouth can also be treated with fillers. Results are immediate and will continue to develop during the first few weeks after the injections. Here we discuss a couple types of effective, longlasting cheek fillers. Juvederm Voluma is a popular line of dermal fillers that is created by Allergan, the makers of Botox. Juvederm is comprised of hyaluronic acid. Juvederm Voluma was the first FDA-approved

hyaluronic acid cheek filler. Patients can see results immediately and results from Voluma last up to 18 months. Voluma can also be used to give chiseled and tighter jaw line and help reduce the appearance of jowls. Restylane Lyft is another brand of dermal filler that is composed of hyaluronic acid. Lyft is made by Galderma, the makers of Dysport. Lyft is a product that can be used effectively to lift the cheeks for a more youthful appearance and results last nine to 12 months. Radiesse Cheek Enhancements are comprised of calcium hydroxyapatite and this triggers your own body’s collagen production. This dermal filler is highly effective for correcting mid-face volume loss/drop, general deep lines, nasolabial folds, defining the contours of the chin, jaw, and cheeks, and giving a natural injectable facelift.

Which cheek filler works the best? There is no single approach and every patient is different. Depending on the consultation, facial structure and skin condition, your experienced injector will determine which cheek filler will provide you with great results. What other areas can dermal fillers be used for? Nasal labial folds (smile lines), lips, chin, temples, lines above and below the lips, marionette lines, underneath the eyes, hands, to correct facial asymmetry and to fill acne scars. How can I save on cheek fillers? While we don’t recommend selecting a treatment or practice based on cost alone, there are ways to save on cheek fillers and other aesthetic injectable treatments. For Juvederm Voluma and other Juvederm fillers, patients enjoy savings by joining the Brilliant

Distinctions program. This is a service provided by Allergan, the makers of Botox and Juvederm. With each purchase of Botox, Juvederm, and even SkinMedica products and Latisse, you can collect points and bonus offers. This allows you to save on future treatments. Galderma, the makers of Restylane, provides a similar program called ASPIRE Galderma Rewards. Pediatric

Dentistry in 2020

T

At Alexandria Children’s Dentistry, innovative trends help Dr. Austin treat kids with ease and overcome fears of the dentist here’s something special about being a mother and practicing pediatric dentistry. I personally treat every single child who comes through my office as if they were my own. A person’s impression of the dentist is developed at a very young age and I take this very seriously. So, if there are innovative ways to treat my patients they feel more comfortable with, it’s my pleasure to do so. Living in Northern Virginia, we are so fortunate to be in the midst of some of the top medical professionals in the country. I absolutely love practicing pediatric dentistry here because there are so many professionals I can consult with, refer to, or trust with my patients should I need to send them somewhere for more advanced specific care. I once practiced dentistry in an underserved area, and I was the main source for everyone’s dental needs. Although this was a very rewarding experience I wouldn’t trade for the world, it was also difficult since there was nobody for me to refer patients to, should I need to, and I wasn’t able to incorporate new dental technology into my everyday practice due to limited resources.

Flash forward to 2020, and I am so excited to be practicing dentistry in a time like this. From laser dentistry to needle-free anesthesia, we are now able to ensure our patients have the best experience possible when coming to a once-feared place. As a mother of three under 6 years old, I am constantly practicing dentistry from a place of, “if this was my baby, how would I treat this situation?” It feels great to be able to offer multiple ways to fill a cavity. In dentistry, there is never a “one size fits all” situation. A cavity is a cavity, but the way we treat the cavity is completely different for each patient. Some children walk into our office excited, ready for anything! Others walk into our office shy and need tender, loving care. Some want absolutely nothing to do with a dental office experience and we have ways to overcome this situation as well.

Let’s dive into some fun, innovative trends in dentistry.

Laser Dentistry

The miracle we’ve all been waiting for: laser dentistry. Many pediatric dentists, including myself, are using a powerful dental laser that replaces the dental “drill” in the majority of procedures in our practice. It causes virtually no pain, vibration, or noise. In fact, nearly every patient skips anesthesia because they just don’t need it. A dental laser is our way of keeping you happy. Because more than anything, we love to see you smile. Most hard and soft tissue procedures in our office can be done with no anesthesia, and soft tissue procedures are done with virtually no bleeding. Bloodfree and anesthesia-free procedures are a major leap forward in dentistry, as we can execute multiquadrant dentistry, fillings on the fly, and soft tissue procedures in a single appointment. What does that mean for your child? Your child is now able to receive the care they need in a fraction of the time they were accustomed to from traditional drills. The laser is also far less invasive than using a traditional handpiece, which makes healing time following a procedure much shorter. When patients have anesthesia, they typically leave the office with that numb feeling still prevalent. With the laser, they are able to go right out to lunch or back to school without the numbing sensation following their appointment. The laser is truly changing what it means to go to the dentist. For infants who suffer from tongue-tie, this laser technology can mean the difference between a colicky infant who isn’t thriving, to one that can start breastfeeding with a natural latch. Infants who receive a laser frenectomy can start breastfeeding almost immediately after “We are now able to the procedure. This is even encouraged ensure our patients to help calm the child. have the best experience possible when coming to a once-feared place.”

So, what happens, when a 2-year-old walks into the dentist for their first dental appointment and is diagnosed with four cavities? When I was in dental school and residency in 2005, we had two options. One: hold them and try our best to do fillings on a screaming baby, or two: sedate them. We typically chose the latter (with parental consent, of course). Flash forward to today and we have an interim treatment option for the pre-cooperative child – Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). SDF is an antimicrobial liquid available to treat cavities in a non-invasive, fast, affordable, and painless manner. FDA cleared in August 2014, SDF became commercially available to dental professionals in April 2015. Compared to a traditional filling, which may require local anesthetic and drilling, SDF is non-invasive and easier for the pre-cooperative patient to tolerate. SDF is a liquid that is simply brushed on to the cavity that can stop current decay and prevent new decay in the future. Sound too good to be true? Well, let me explain the pros and cons of SDF. Pros: SDF has very low toxicity, it is quick, painless, noninvasive, affordable, and can stop tooth decay and help prevent recurrent decay. The patient can simply lay in the parent’s lap and the dentist brushes the liquid onto the decay and the decay should not progress. Cons: SDF permanently stains cavities black. SDF does not restore tooth form or function, so large holes that trap food may still eventually require a traditional restoration. SDF will require repeat applications for maximum efficacy. Finally, SDF cannot be used when an infection is present or the decay is into the nerve.

SDF

Treatment

Unfortunately, tooth decay remains the number one most common disease of childhood, five times more common than asthma. Regularly available snacks, frequent consumption of sugary drinks, bottled water without fluoride, and infrequent trips to the dentist have all contributed to this epidemic.

My opinion: I recommend SDF for some patients. One issue with SDF is that esthetically, it is not pleasing. I’ve noticed many parents are not comfortable with the esthetics of SDF despite it stopping the decay from growing, but it can be a good option depending on the circumstances.

Kovanaze In all the years I’ve practiced dentistry, I’ve talked to many adults and (of course) children about their top fears and how dentists can help alleviate these fears. The number one fear I hear is the dreaded “needle.” It’s so dreaded, in fact, that we don’t even use that word in my office. It is banned! The mere thought of children knowing a needle can be used in their mouth is grounds for them running straight out of my office! So, although I’m pretty skilled at providing a painless injection, I understand when parents ask if there is any other way to fill the tooth besides using a needle.

“As a mother of three under 6 years old, I am constantly practicing dentistry from a place of, “if this was my baby, how would I treat this situation?” It feels great to be able to offer multiple ways to fill a cavity.”

Kovanaze is a dental anesthetic that is inhaled as a nasal spray. It is effective at numbing the upper teeth without the feeling of numbing the lips. First, I typically offer the dental laser we use. However, there is also another new, innovative way to anesthetize the top teeth without a needle. It’s recommended for patients who are 88 pounds or more, so only some of my patients can use this. Kovanaze is a dental anesthetic that is inhaled as a nasal spray. It is effective at numbing the upper teeth without the feeling of numbing the lips. This is beneficial because so many times we leave the dentist with our lips so numb it’s very uncomfortable. And for children, many times they are at risk for lip bites, which is no fun once the anesthesia wears off. It is FDA approved and another option for numbing sans needle, which is definitely something to consider when looking at all these new dental trends.

law&finance By Virginia L. Colin, Ph.D.

Should a Couple Stay Together for the Kids? As a psychologist and a family mediator, I can say with confidence that what is best for one set of kids will not match what is best for another set of kids. Worse yet, what is best for one child may be different from what is best for another child in the same family. When divorce was socially unacceptable, unhappy couples routinely tried to stay together, especially if they had kids. Now, almost half of marriages end in divorce. What does that mean for the kids? If there are minor children, divorce ordinarily does long-lasting emotional and financial damage to all members of the family. Sometimes it is the best choice anyway, because continuing a bad marriage can be unhealthy for the

kids as well as the parents. Most kids would prefer for their parents to stay married. My kids were angry at me for years because my ex and I could not find a way to tolerate staying together. Their lives would have been much worse if we had stayed together, but they could not see that. After we divorced, we were able to stop fighting and able to cooperate as parents. Later, each of us married a better life partner, so the kids also got to see what healthy marriages

look like. For us, it turned out, divorce was the right choice. For other families, it might not be. When parents can learn to interact with love, respect, and good communication, their children are likely to thrive. If the parents can stay together without too much anger, unhappiness, or pain in their relationship, that may be better for the kids than a divorce would be. When children are involved, perhaps it its only when the marriage is clearly damaging to one or both parents that the spouses should divorce. Having two calm households will usually be better for the kids than living in one house that is full of tension, hostility, and/or abuse. Another factor to consider is what is likely to happen after the divorce. Will one parent remarry, have more children, and then use his or her financial resources and time to care for those children, to the detriment of children from the first marriage? Kids do need both financial support and love. Obviously, divorce will not solve everything. If the parents keep fighting, divorced or still together, it’s going to be awful for the kids. If you must divorce, let the kids have as good a relationship as they can with your ex, and make good use of community resources to help yourself and your kids heal.

If you decide to divorce, how you do it can make a big difference for your kids. Try mediation in preference to an adversarial approach. You will probably save thousands of dollars and spare everybody a lot of pain and anxiety. The decision about whether to divorce is rarely easy. INTERVIEW WITH

A mediator’s primary responsibility is to facilitate a constructive discussion. Often that means helping each person hear the other person’s perspective. Most people have a hard time listening when they are in the middle of a dispute. Sometimes the mediator needs to help people stay calm enough to think clearly. Sometimes we help people recognize why they think a certain outcome is crucial and find other ways to meet the need that underlies their preferred outcome.

Q: WHEN DID YOU FIRST LEARN OF THE BENEFITS OF MEDIATION?

I learned a little about how good mediation could be when I was getting divorced in the 1990s. I learned much more when I volunteered to mediate for a friend who had been in a custody battle for more than a year and a half. His ex-wife decided to give the process a chance even though she could reasonably have expected me to be biased in his favor. The process in that case was long, hard, stressful, and exhausting, but also successful. My friend came to an agreement with his ex on a custody and visitation schedule they could both live with. Their kids no longer had to live in an emotional war zone. Despite the parents’ history of hostility and frequent court hearings, they never went back to court.

Q: HAVE YOU HAD A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WHERE MEDIATION HELPED?

Mediation helped my husband and me finalize some decisions about when our children would spend time with each of us. And, of course, I have had hundreds of experiences seeing mediation help our clients.

Begin the New Year with a Focus on Mental Well-Being Mental health care is one of the largest unmet needs in our society, yet with psychotherapy treatment that is both accessible and affordable, people can cope with life’s stresses, work productively, realize their full potential, and make meaningful contributions to their communities. While mental illness strikes individuals of every socioeconomic status, the National Alliance on Mental Health reports individuals who are low-income and uninsured are twice as likely to have a mental disorder as the general population. Lack of financial resources to meet basic needs, fewer educational and employment opportunities, and poor access to quality care are often cited as major factors in the development of, or resulting in, poor mental health in disadvantaged and uninsured/underinsured households.

The Women’s Center is a community safety net for vulnerable individuals and families. The Center has been a fixture in Fairfax County for more than 45 years, providing mental health counseling, support, and education to people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds so that they can experience healing and wellness, build resiliency, and navigate life’s challenges and opportunities. The Center provides effective, outcomes-based therapy to more than 2,000 counseling clients per year, helping them with physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being. In addition to one-on-one counseling, The Center also offers a wide variety of programs, workshops, and webinars to help people through the transitional periods of their life.

A Few Minutes with

NATALYA ANDERSON Q: How did you find your passion for hair? A: I would say from my childhood. I was always styling my doll’s hair. When I was a little older, my grandfather always asked me to cut his hair. He said he loved it, but a few days later he would visit his barber. Q: What inspired you to open your own salon? A: I wanted to create an environment where everyone has an opportunity to grow and learn; a welcoming place where it feels like home. I have passion for learning and sharing that knowledge, so owning a salon and managing a team was a pretty natural fit. My husband, Charles, is my biggest supporter. He encouraged me along the way and has

provided moral support while taking the leap into salon ownership. Q: How do you want Alya Salon & Spa to stand out from other salons? A: We want to be the best in the industry by providing outstanding customer service, being honest with our clients, and guiding them in all aspects of the beauty and health of their hair, skin and body. We are very selective in what products we use. We try to find products that are as natural as possible. We have ammonia-free color, gluten-free, paraben-free, vegan and eco-friendly products to ensure the health and wellbeing of our clients. Q: What makes your salon unique? A: It is really the individuals on our team who make us unique. From hair care and skin care to weekly waxing, we can help you look and feel your best. Our comprehensive hair salon services include haircuts (curly certified), hair color, hair styling, specialized treatments, and more.

To relax and rejuvenate, we suggest indulging in our spa with a facial, skin therapy treatment, massage or reiki. To complete your look with waxing services with our master estheticians, and makeup applications with our makeup artists. Q: How have you built this talented team of professionals? A: I focused on hiring skilled professionals who are passionate, well educated, creative artists who share a belief that all client experiences should be engaging and enjoy unparalleled luxury and relaxation. Q: What do you love most about your work? A: The best moment for me is when our guest is leaving the salon, extremely happy, smiling with beautiful shiny hair and glowing skin. The biggest reward is to make someone happy. When you look good, you feel good, and you become more confident. Feeling beautiful is powerful to both body and mind.

Q: What are the most popular services lately? A: Balayage, fashion colors, haircuts and massages. Balayage is so versatile as a coloring technique. It allows you to have the most natural-looking hair. You can then extend the balayage by adding fashion colors on top of it to create a unique look that makes a statement. As the fashion colors wash out, you still have that natural color underneath. Our clients also love that we offer massage. We have many of our clients coming in for a massage first and then having their hair services done.

(Left) Our front desk team, Lexi, Aimee, and Sydney.

Q: Tell us about your efforts to give back to the community? A: We choose to support local charity organizations. We provided complimentary hair and makeup services for the leadership of Britepaths organization in preparation for their magazine photoshoot. Once we learned about their mission, we have continued to support this wonderful organization throughout the year by raising money and providing complimentary braiding, massages and raffles items at our grand opening, Viva Vienna, and October Fest events. We created avant-garde updos for all runway models at the ‘We Will Survive Cancer’ (WWSC) event. The last event we participated in was Dancing with the Stars’ DC Gala. We had so much fun working with local celebrities styling their hair. Lastly, we now support Vienna-based non-profit BRAWS, on their mission to support local women and girls living in shelters. We pay it forward. Together we can make a difference.

(Below) Patricia Faulstick, Aesthetics.

Q: We heard that you won a couple awards lately? Tell us more? A: In November, we won Best Salon in Northern Virginia 2020 for architectural design. We are so proud of this recognition as Charles and I worked with a great designer and architect to bring our salon vision to life. We also won third place for Floats with Music in the Vienna Halloween parade. Our float theme was ‘Rapunzel with dancing hair fairies’. We all had so much fun at the parade!

An Evening of Strings and Classical Guitar The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (ASO) continues its 2019-2020 season of diverse programming under the direction of Maestro James Ross. In his second year as Music Director with the ASO, Ross endeavors to feature forgotten and underrepresented voices in the concert hall and present symphonic music in unconventional and creative ways. The ASO will present an evening of strings, “Serenade at Dusk,” with string orchestra, full orchestra, a string quartet featured with orchestra, a string quartet expanded for orchestra, and a classical guitar concerto. The program will take place Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020 (8 p.m.) and Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020 (3 p.m.). Known for his innovative programs and unusual concert formats, the program incorporates

Maestro Ross’ own arrangement, an expansion of a string quartet for orchestra. “Although we are dead serious about orchestral music and its humanizing impact in today’s world, we are not afraid of surprises and serendipity, which makes ASO concerts both fun and moving for listeners of all ages,” says Ross. Opening the program is Mozart’s Serenata notturna, which features a solo string quartet with string orchestra and timpani. The three lively movements offer sparkling soloistic passages between the quartet, militarylike color from the timpani, and comical exchanges among all instruments. Joining the ASO as featured artist is one of today’s foremost classical guitarists, Berta Rojas. Grammy-nominated and ranked

amongst the most influential women in the Hispanic world, Ms. Rojas was named by the Kennedy Center as a Fellow of the Americas and honored with Paraguay’s title of Illustrious Ambassador of Musical Art. Ms. Rojas will present Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Guitar Concerto No. 1. CastelnuovoTedesco is considered one of the premier guitar composers; the concerto was composed for famed soloist Andrés Segovia. Opening the second half is a premiere of Maestro Ross’ arrangement of the second movement of Florence Price’s String Quartet in G major, expanded for orchestra. Price was the first African American woman to have a composition presented by a major orchestra (the Chicago Symphony in 1933). Today, Price’s works are re-emerging and gaining popularity, highlighted by a new festival dedicated to her work, held at the University of Maryland, called Price Fest.

The program concludes with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 5, known for its lyrical and rousing nature. Schubert completed the work in a matter of weeks at a mere twenty years old and just months after his fourth symphony. It is said to reflect the character of Mozart, with whom Schubert was infatuated at the time, with lighter instrumentation and reminiscent of his melodies. The Alexandria Symphony is a fully professional orchestra drawing from the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region’s wealth of musical talent. The ASO performs Saturday evenings at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center and Sunday matinees at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Adult tickets start at $20, and the ASO offers discounts for seniors, students and military personnel and veterans. All youth (18 and under) tickets are $5. We give support and inspiration to teens with all cancers by giving them our Teen Support Bags. We've given almost 7,000 so far in 120+ hospitals in 47 states and DC! Each costs us $75. We also fund thyroid cancer research grants! “ When I was diagnosed with cancer at age 17 as a junior in high school, I felt very alone. Teens don't get the needed support, caught between pediatric and adult treatment. I started my own foundation to send that support through my teen-specific support bags.” states Nikki, age 27.

winter hair care tips

Are you working with your hair or against it? January is a great time to step back and do a quick assessment of your hair-care routine. Figure out, are you working with your hair or against it? Remember, each hair type is unique and requires its own style, products, and routine. What’s more, your routine needs change based on the season. Here are some tips for the winter.

THE CUT A beautiful hairstyle starts with a cut that fits you, your hair type, and your lifestyle. Make sure your hairstyle fits you this season. Do you want your hair to protect your ears and neck from the cold? How about having it shorter, so it blow dries quickly on cold mornings? Either way, you need a good cut that works with your hair and your lifestyle.

BLOW DRYING VS BLOTTING For curly hair, after washing, you should always blot your hair dry rather than rubbing or wrapping it turban style. Use only a widetooth comb with blunt tips or just your fingertips for styling. If you want to blow dry it, always use a defuser on your hairdryer. Speaking of blow drying your hair, pay close attention to the direction you blow dry. For hair where the hair needs to be blown dry to build volume, try blow drying your hair gently and evenly over the whole head. Otherwise, you run the risk of creating a false cowlick. Are you having a hard time juggling both your brush and your hairdryer? Don’t worry, no brush is necessary; use your fingers to guide your hair. You only need a brush when you are “directing” the hair into something specific it won’t do on its own. If the cut is right, the hair should fall naturally without direction from a brush.

HYDRATION Winter weather has low humidity, which means you need to make sure you are hydrating your hair. Hydration is particularly important if you have curly or naturally dry hair. To keep it hydrated, shampoo your hair periodically - once or twice a week, never every day. Winter is also the season of leave-in conditioners and the occasional use of a deep conditioning treatment. Consult your stylist for the frequency of use. The lower humidity also means your hair won’t be as frizzy, allowing you to decrease the amount of product you need to hold your hair in place.

Play with it!

Find a style that makes you smile and feel good. A new look can bring a spring to your step and a smile to go with those new warm sweaters.
