They cut across traffic and fail to yield to other vehicles. People drive up the down lane, clearly ignoring the directional arrows painted on the pavement. One must be ever-alert and attentive to avoid running into shopping carts and reckless drivers. I wish I could avoid parking lots like I avoid left turns. My son, who often rides shotgun in my vehicle, gets annoyed with my vigilant behind-the-wheel behaviors. “You’ve got the right of way,” he says with the smug authority of

someone with a brand new permit in his wallet and a pocketful of knowledge gleaned from a recent stint in driver’s training class. Clearly his nouveau insight far surpasses my decades of dependably cautious driving experience. “If they come crashing into us it doesn’t matter who has the right of way,” I tell him with the authority of a driver who long ago graduated from training permit to full-fledged license. And then I make a few right turns toward home. It’s all in the name of safety. cars, or more specifically the drivers of those cars. You can’t count on them to see you or follow the rules of the road. Many are looking at phones. Everyone knows you shouldn’t text and drive but I see it all the time. Hence my caution and predisposition to brake first and ask question later. Defensive driving 101 – I practically invented the topic. This seasoned roadie has learned that not all driving is created equal. Some situations are worse than others. There are a few scenarios where a diligent driver (like me) is likely to be more road-leery and brake-ready than usual. Uncontrolled intersections are risky business. When I encounter a cross street with another vehicle inching out onto my roadway, I slow down and prepare to avoid a collision should they attempt to come crashing into me. Four-way stop signs are controlled intersections and as such should bring comfort to a control freak. Unfortunately this isn’t the case. The concept of waiting your turn was mastered by most of us in kindergarten. All that good knowledge goes flying out the window when drivers encounter a four-way stop and leap into a me-first mentality. Some motorists even piggyback on the car in front of their own, so that both vehicles go through the intersection at the same time. Clearly illegal. So many things could go wrong at a four-way stop. So I am wary. As I am with left turns. I go out of my way to avoid them. Left turns involve cross traffic, which could result in a T-bone that has nothing to do with a juicy steak. Besides, why make a left when three rights will get you the same outcome? Making a left turn at a four-way stop is a double whammy. Enough said. Not all hazards of driving occur on the roadways. Parking lots are the Wild, Wild West of the driving world. Anarchy rules and laws and logic are ignored. Drivers in parking lots pay no heed to stop signs.

Women facing MS share stories prior to 2017 MS Walk REPORTER

Multiple Sclerosis may exhibit early symptoms such as tingling, numbness in the limbs, or in more severe cases loss of vision may occur. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. MS affects the central nervous system incorporating the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Currently no cure exists for MS, however treatments are available that may help those facing this debilitating disease. After her diagnosis Christine Gil-

lette took action toward helping others who are living with Multiple Sclerosis by serving as the chair of the Rockford MS Walk. In September 2001 Christine Gillette started noticing symptoms that something was wrong in her body. By March of 2002 she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Gillette was a student in Graduate School at Northern; trying an internship at the time. Gillette experienced blurry vision. “When traveling I was exhausted. Just trying to do everything made me tired,” shares Gillette. “After being

The Winnebago Post Prom 2017 was a great night for Winnebago Juniors and Seniors and their guests! Nearly 80 students attended a fun and prize‐filled evening. We truly appreciate the area businesses who helped provide this safe option for our teens! Please thank them for their participation. Next year will bring another opportunity for those who want to join this effort.

informed of changes in my professional life I went back to school with the support of my husband and colleagues. Gillette became a dietitian in the Rockford Health System. “Working in the health field you focus on flu vaccines, and checkups. A combination of stress, school and working led to feeling a bit tired, vertigo, and chronic sinus problems,” said Gillette. “I had another visit at a walk-in clinic. After seeing a different Doctor I was put on a five-day Prednisone pack to decrease inflammation from an inner ear infection. After the steroids wore off I felt fluid coming out of my ears. An internal Medicine Doctor performed various tests. He had me close my eyes and just stand. I passed the test but I was off balance. I felt like I was going around in circles. “An MRI was ordered to rule out MS, which we have a strong family history of. When I received the call to show me the results I forced the nurse to tell me. I was told that I had Bilateral Light Lesions, which were prominent on the left optic nerve. It was a shock to me. “You often may see clusters of families of autoimmune diseases. I use to think it skipped a generation, but in my case it didn’t. MS is so individual that one has to figure out what triggers it in a person.” Two days later I was looking into getting married on a beach; to be married legally and have a blessing on the beach. I was in the Polynesian Islands when it was confirmed that I had MS.” Considerable amounts of walking took a toll on Gillette. “My legs started feeling heavier and heavier. They felt numb and dense like logs; my symptoms came on quickly. My sister brought me a wheel chair from the Emergency room to the diet center. I met with a Neurologist. Within three days I left the hospital in a wheelchair and was very ill. The key to everything was being caught very early. “The school bent over backwards to keep me going. Having that kind of support was just crazy,” lauds Gillette. “I started to feel a little bit better. An Urologist at UW Madison got me out of my attack. I was given options of having a whole infusion or staying in the hospital. They prescribed 5,000 MG of Fenelander which equals 5 days’ worth of IV Therapy. Copaxane Therapy was also attempted to see if it would work for me.” “I am taking control. MS is not going to take control of me,” says Gillette. “I am extremely grateful to have such a supportive husband and family.” In her freshman year of high school Brooke Billeter lost her balance

while walking. She had no feeling in her tongue. “One in five Americans is related to someone who has MS,” said Billeter. I feel that at least one person will be affected by it; some are never going to get rid of it. MS can start in a brain and spinal cord, speech and memory. Billeter has endured chemo therapy treatments. These may go anywhere from one to five years. One medication is in the works and can be released if approved by the FDA.” Today, she remains an avid spokesperson in raising awareness .Though she fights MS every day Billetter has had a baby boy and has another baby on the way. She has recently com-

pleted a course study in Radiography at Mercy Health and will be celebrating her graduation. Weather pattern changes affect most people who are living with an auto immune disease; especially those living with MS. Year round fundraisers are held to raise funds for furthering research and education. This year’s 2017 MS Walk is being held on Sunday, May 7 at Khlem Arboretum. Registration runs from 7:30 a.m. until 9 a.m. Steve Shannon is the guest DJ. A silent auction and kids zone adds to a day full of fun times all in the name of helping those living with MS.

View hundreds of wild birds, just an arm’s length away Hundreds of wild birds migrating through the area are just an arm’s length away at BirdFest 2017, all day Saturday and Sunday, May 13 and 14, beginning at 8 a.m. BirdFest is hosted by Illinois’ largest bird observatory – Sand Bluff Bird Observatory (SBBO) – located in Colored Sands Forest Preserve, four miles northwest of Shirland, Ill. SBBO is one of the largest banding stations in the region that welcomes visitors. Get a first-hand view of a wide variety of birds, such as Redtail Hawks, Bluebirds, Scarlet Tanagers and Baltimore Orioles. BirdFest is held during peak migration when thousands of birds return from their homes as far south as Argentina to summer here or

continue farther north to Canada and Alaska. Featured presentations include: · Saturday at 1 p.m. – Learn about a high-rise rooftop prairie in the heart of the city of Chicago, that supports more 300 species of birds and native prairie plants from Kevin Carroll, horticulturist, City of Chicago Department of Transportation. · Sunday at Noon – Discover the threats to grassland birds and habitat management, and solutions for recovery from Heather Herakovich, PhD-candidate, Northern Illinois University. Herakovich is conducting research at the 4,000-acre Nachusa Grasslands prairie, woodlands and wetlands preserve in Franklin Grove,

Illinois. “BirdFest is a wonderful opportunity to unplug from technology and take a walk on the wild side,” said Mike Eickman, Station Master and BirdFest Chair. “Visitors are often amazed by the birds’ sizes, colors and markings.” With extensive experience in studying and researching birds, the all-volunteer SBBO staff devotes their free-time to sharing this passion with others. Visitors are invited to shadow certified net-checkers, who gently remove birds safely captured in mist nets erected throughout the Colored Sands Forest Preserve. The birds are carefully transported to the observatory station for identification. At the observatory, visitors will watch as permitted band-

ers assess and band each bird. Experts will share interesting facts about the birds—what they eat; where they nest; the distances they travel—and will answer questions. Guests will have an opportunity to examine the birds before the birds are set free. SBBO’s annual outdoor festival is open on Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and offers a host of family fun activities: · Bird-banding demonstrations · Bird talks throughout the days, in addition to featured presentations · Guided nature hikes · Free Kids’ Korner with activities, games and face painting · Hawk and falcon shows · Wildlife and nature artist exhibits

· Silent auction with wildlife and nature items · Food stand featuring delicious breakfast and lunch menus Admission is $4 for adults; $1 for children ages four to 12. All presentations, activities (except owl pellets) and parking are included in the admission fee. All proceeds support the bird-net fund and educational programming. SBBO is an all-volunteer organization. The event takes place rain or shine as the birds continue to be active even in a light drizzle. SBBO is located in Colored Sands Forest Preserve, Winnebago County, Illinois. Follow signs on Yale Bridge Road. For more information, please go to sandbluff.org or call (815) 871-8483.
