This site also can be used to confirm the status of a voter registration. 38-YEAR RUN ENDS: Bob and Grant McCullough recently released this statement: “We have made the difficult decision to close our retail pharmacy and gift department (McCullough’s Prescriptions and Gifts), 1173 W. Main St. in Whitewater. The staff at McCullough’s Prescriptions and Gifts would like to thank all of the loyal customers who have supported our business throughout these past 38 years in Whitewater.” The retail prescription files were transferred from McCullough’s in Whitewater to Walgreens in Whitewater (1041 W. Main St), and the retail prescription files from McCullough’s in Walworth were transferred to Walgreens in Delavan (445 S. Wright St.) as of March 20. McCullough’s Long-Term Care Pharmacy in Whitewater will continue to serve residents of skilled nursing and assisted living communities but will not be open to the general public.

LIVING Plans to overhaul American Legion building move forward By Dave Fidlin CORRESPONDENT Whitew ater officials have praised a revised set of plans associated with the planned overhaul of t he Ameri can Legion building. De veloper Mike Kachel of DLK Enterprises went before the city’s Plan and Architectural Review Commissi on on March 9 with a re vised set of plans for the proposed conversion of the Legion’s Post 173 banquet hall and restaurant, 292 Wisconsin St., into a 10-unit senior development. In November, Kachel provided commissioners with a rough sketch of his plans for the site. At the time, concerns were raised about a per ceived lack of specificity in how some of the refinements would take shape. When commissioners first combed through Kachel’s plans last fall, a conditional-use permit was gra nted with the underst anding m ore detai ls woul d be furnished at a later date. When he returned earlier this month, Kachel provided the appo i nt ed body with a number of additional details, including building materials, landscaping plans and the specific location of parking accommoda t ions. Commissioners approved all of those elements at the most recent meeting. Kachel’s latest sets of plans call for parking spaces to be placed at the front of the building, which resulted in commentary during the recent re views. “I’d rather see the parking spaces in the back of the building and the greenery in front,” commissioner Sherry Stanek said. By retrofitting the existing build ing, City Planner Chris MunzPritchard said having the parking spaces at the front, rather than the back, of th e bui lding is like ly the most prudent move. “I ’m not disagreeing with you,” Munz-Pritchard said to Stanek’s comment, “but t h at might not be possible, give n the slope of the building.” During the comb-through of plans, Stanek also praised the incor poration of vegetation at different portions of the site. “From an urban forestry per spective, the number of native plans you’ve included is phenomenal,” Stanek said. “I really appreciate that.” Greg Meyer, who chairs the Plan and Architectural Review Commis sion, also praised the revised plans Kachel presented city officials. “My thanks for bringing this back,” Meyer said. “It looks really good. I t hink you did a really good job.” During a public comment portion of the meeting, several residents weighed in on the plans and asked t hat care be put into the plans, given the property’s high-profile location and proximity to the downtown area. “I want to m ake sure there’s a lot more thought put into it,” resident Brienne Diebolt-Brown said. Although a fir m ti metable on the conversion project is not set in stone, Kachel said hi s goal is to be gin the project in the near future. “The Legion would like (the transaction) to close soon,” he said. Kachel has overseen other resi dential housing projects in White water. Previous developments under his purview also have had a senior housing component, including the Blackhawk Manor site within the city. Still on the move

Member FDIC 284865 Ag in the Classroom deadlines extended Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom has extended deadlines for several grants and contests due to school closures during the COVID-19 pan demic. “With schools being closed, Wis consin Ag in the Classroom wants to be flexible with deadlines to allow participation while also respecting the need to put individual health and safety first,” said Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom Coordinator Darlene Arneson. Deadline extensions include: The MORE for Agriculture grant deadline to apply is now May 10. This grant is available to teachers in grades 7 through 12. The MORE grant will provide 50 classroom sets of The Hungry Planet by Peter Men zel to participating classes in each state. The book details the food con sumption of various families around the world. Companion educational lessons and resources will accompa ny the books. Essay contest submissions are now due by April 24. This contest asks fourth and fifth grade students to respond to the essay prompt, “How has Wisconsin agriculture affected your life today?” If school does not resume, parents may send entries to the county essay coordi nator. The youth coloring contest, that is part of National Ag Day activ ities, deadline has been extended until May 1. Students are asked to draw and color a picture that shows people who are involved in grow ing, producing, processing, selling, preparing or somehow have another connection to food. The contest is open to children ages 12 and under. National Ag Day reading event submission deadline has been ex tended until June 1. People of all ages are invited to take their favor ite children’s book about agriculture and set up a virtual, Facebook Live, or other social media reading. Because many libraries are closed, people may need to use their own library, borrow from a friend, or buy books online. The recom mended book is the Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom’s Book of the Year Right This Very Minute by Wiscon sin author Lisl Detlefsen. The book is available for purchase through the online store on wisagclassroom.com. “With schools being closed and many parents looking for ways to continue their children’s learning, we encourage families to visit the Wisconsin Ag in the Classroom web site for lesson plans, virtual learning games and more,” added Arneson.
