‘Country Nights & Carnival Lights’ KENOSHA COUNTY FAIR RETURNS AUG. 14-18

The Kenosha County Fair promises thrills, chills and five days of farming fun when the annual event returns to the county fairgrounds Aug. 14 to 18.

The fair puts the spotlight on local agriculture and features the county’s best youth farmers in many of the competitions.

Kids from grade school to high school show their animals and compete in agriculturerelated contests throughout the five-day run.

The county fair and kids go hand-in-hand and there are plenty of kid friendly activities

to keep families busy throughout the entire run. From hands-on activities, to carnival rides to kiddie pedal tractor pulls, there’s always something for the younger crowd.

The annual Children’s Parade, for kids 14 and younger, steps off at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 16, at the southeast end of the fairgrounds, near the fair office.

Onsite registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Fair Office.

The Children’s Scavenger Hunt is Thursday, Aug. 15. For kids age 12 and

younger, the hunt begins at 10 a.m. and wraps up at 2:30 p.m. Kids can pick up their clue sheets at the ticket gate when they enter the fairgrounds.

High-flying action

In the grandstand, the fun starts Wednesday, when Digger Doug has his fourth annual ATV/UTV Showdown, sponsored by Nielsen Enterprises. The fun starts at 6:30 p.m.

Digger Doug, a 20-year pro ATV/UTV rider, plans to showcase high-flying, mogul-jumping stunts.

Racing begins with Friday Night Thunder! at the Grandstand. The event showcases modified and stock car racing with a special performance by BigFoot Monster Truck.

Other daily activities include the Pleasure Valley Pic and Duck Races, K9s in Flight, Nick’s Kid Show, and multiple strolling entertainment acts.

The Discovery Barnyard hosts daily educational exhibits and the petting zoo, which is open from 9 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. (6 p.m. Sunday) daily.

Kids can also be a “Farmer for a Day” at the Barnyard Adventure Show. The attraction lets kids play at milking a cow, feeding a pig, baling hay and other farming “chores.”

The Antique Farm Machinery Exhibit offers fairgoers a chance to see the tractors, engines and machines from days of old. The annual antique tractor parade travels the fairgrounds and Grandstand at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Admission

The fair has an all-pay policy, meaning everyone who enters the fairgrounds must pay the daily admission price. Tickets cost $10 for adults. age 12 and older; $5 for children age 7 to 11 and free for children 6 and younger.

The cost for seniors, 65 and older, and active/retired military (with ID) is $7.

Season passes are also available for $35 for adults and $12 for children.

The fairgrounds will open 8 a.m. and close midnight Wednesday through Saturday, and from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Changing things up with the County Fair representative

The Kenosha County Fairest of the Fair for 2020 will be Claire Fox, of Burlington. Fox was the only contestant in this year’s competition and begins her reign in January 2020 instead of at this year’s fair.

“We’ve changed the program for this year and added some new things,” said Jenny Happ, director of the competition. “We wanted to give our candidates more time to prepare for their time as fair ambassador.”

Happ said the change in how they’re running the Kenosha County Fairest of the Fair was a result of feedback from contestants over the years.

“In the past they’ve been crowned at the beginning of the fair and start their reign then. They then go on to compete in the state competition in January and being that they were just crowned in August, many of them said they weren’t as prepared as they thought they should be.”

Now, the Kenosha County Fairest will be named in August, but begin their reign the following January and have a full year as a community representative before competing at the state competition and will reign over the following year’s fair.

“This gives them time to take seminars and build their skills and get a year’s worth of experience under their belts,” Happ said. “And after the fair, they will finish up with events in fall before moving on to the state competition in a better position to represent the state.”

Happ said the county has already begun lining up seminars and workshops for Fox to participate in the next year.

“We’re going to have the visitor’s bureau come in and talk and the Kenosha Area Business Association. We’re also going to have seminars on makeup, etiquette and other things to help the candidates polish their profession image.”

Happ said the goal is to change the competition from a “beauty pageant” into a forum for young people to build a professional image and skills.

“A lot of people don’t know that the competition is open to all genders,” she said.

“Anyone who wants to be a fair representative can enter. In the past the crowning has always been done in evening gowns, but we’re changing that to professional dress.

“This is really about being a fair representative, not a beauty contest.”

Happ also added that the competition isn’t limited to 4-H Club members, as many people believe.

Clair Fox, 19, is the daughter of Jean and Robert Fox. She graduated from Westosha Central High School and is attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She hopes to become a marketing manager.

Fox is participating in an internship with Horn Trevor Feeds and works in the food/ beverage department at Brighton Dale Links.

on the Creekside Stage MUSIC LINEUP FOR THE 2019 KENOSHA COUNTY FAIR

The county group Bella Cain is headlining the Kenosha County Fair again this year and will take the stage at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17.

A perennial favorite at the fair, Bella Cain been performing for nearly a decade and has become one of the largest and most “in-demand” top 40 country groups in the region.

With more than 23 members in the band, that include musicians, dancers, sound and light engineers, techs/ crew, merchandise staff and drivers, the group can be seen performing across the Midwest, rocking the stages of Country Thunder, Country USA, SummerFest, FM106 and US-99 Sponsored Events, Navy Pier, State Fair, Allstate Arena, Bradley Center as well as headlining many fairs and private festivals in Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan, just to name a few.

The Now Band is another popular group set to return this year. The group, which plays classic rock through contemporary pop/rock covers always seems to get the crowd jumping at the fair. They will be on the Creekside Stage at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 16.

The Now Band has performed on stage at multiple festivals, venues and clubs and opened for some of the industry’s top acts, including Pat Benatar, The Offspring, The Outfield, Loverboy, Sister Hazel, Bret Michaels, Molly Hatchet, Wilco, and REO Speedwagon.

KR Bluegrass performs on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m.

According to the band’s website, the group of musicians from southeastern Wisconsin were regulars at weekly jams where friendships developed because of their mutual love of old time gospel and bluegrass music. Their music is influenced by the Stanley Brothers, Carter and Cox families and Ricky Skaggs.

A family affair

WARRENS PASS 4-H TRADITION TO CHILDREN

When Jon and Heather Warren were growing up, they acquired valuable traits from their experiences at the Kenosha County Fair, where their children show animals today.

“I showed cattle when I was younger and their age and I loved it,” said Jon. “They get to learn about work ethic, they will know about responsibilities with feeding them every morning and every night and take care of them.”

For Heather, who exhibited other projects, the Wheatland couple wanted to pass these values onto their three children.

“I was in 4-H as a kid, I never was in the animal projects, but I had all of the cooking, sewing and arts and crafts,” Heather said. “I just thought we would introduce 4-H to our kids.”

Their children – Chase, 17; Jalyn, 15; and Caden, 13 – are members of the Wheatland Willing Workers 4-H club.

At the 2018 Kenosha County Fair, the three children showed a collective nine animals, including one steer each.

Additionally, Chase and Jalyn each showcased a Heifer and pig.

While they exhibited animals in three categories, Jalyn and Chase both agreed steers present the biggest challenge, figuratively and literally.

“Steers are the hardest, they are over 1,000 pounds,” said Chase, an incoming senior at Westosha Central High School.

Caden, who will be an eighth grader at Wheatland Center School, agreed.

Jalyn, an incoming sophomore at Westosha Central, knows first-hand the weight and power of a steer.

While Jalyn showed at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis, her steer took control in the ring, where she hung on and survived.

“I would say beef as well, the steer was like a puppy dog at home, and then when we went up to the state fair, he was throwing me around the ring,” Jalyn said. “At the County

Fair, he was a puppy dog, so their mood can change any day.”

Before she showed at the Wisconsin State Fair, Jalyn worked on her craft of showmanship at earlier preview shows, according to Heather.

“Jalyn showed at a few preview shows this winter, she showed at Badger Kick-Off in Madison, show at the Rock County preview show in Janesville,” Heather said. “Jalyn showed her steer up at the state fair, it is not just getting ready for August, it is year round.”

Upon conclusion of this year’s Kenosha County Fair, the three children have about two months until they receive their next set of steers, which take months to raise.

“Steers start early, we will leave here and

by October, we will have our steers for next year,” Heather said.

With a shorter break time, according to Jon, the beef project truly takes an entire year.

“It is a year-round commitment, you are either in, or you are out,” Jon said.

Determined work ethic

Chase, a two-time grand champion in the beef project, credits his younger siblings commitment to their steers before and during the Kenosha County Fair.

“They both did really well with their steers this year, they worked hard on them,” Chase said. “(Jalyn) was with her steer everyday during the summer.”

Chase, meanwhile, won overall showmanship champion for his Heifer in 2018. While Chase raised his own animals and attempted to instill showmanship skills to his younger siblings, Heather enjoyed seeing her children working together as a collective team.

“I like seeing them work together, they help each other out, and they do all summer long,” said Heather, who acknowledged her children made sacrifices, including time with their friends.

“We are pretty fortunate, our kids get along really well,” Jon said.

Explore a career in agriculture The agricultural industry provides a variety of opportunities to professionals interested in this often-misunderstood field.

According to the employment resource AGCareers.com, more than 250 career profiles are available to people interested in a career in agriculture. And while jobs in agriculture may not be as prevalent as they were a few centuries ago, when 72 percent of the workforce was employed in farm occupations in the United States, agriculture remains a booming industry that greatly affects the nation’s economy.

Today, one in 12 American jobs depends on agriculture, according to the career resource Payscale.

The following are some potential professions for those considering careers in agriculture.

Agricultural business manager This person oversees the business operations of a farm by providing organization and leadership during the production process. He or she contacts creditors, selects seeds, buys new equipment, and ensures the distribution of product.

Agricultural lawyer Attorneys who specialize in agriculture deal with water and environmental issues, represent agricultural labor in disputes, ensure proper marketing techniques are followed, handle real estate and land use issues, and much more.

Animal control officer These officers enforce local and regional laws that pertain to the treatment and care of animals. They patrol for distressed animals and ensure cruelty-free practices are adhered to.

Grain buyer Grain buyers build relationships with producers so they can purchase grain for their particular companies. They negotiate purchase agreements, source grain supplies and issue purchase orders.

Poultry hatchery manager Hatchery managers oversee all of the aspects involved in poultry hatching. These can include management of personnel, handling and sorting of eggs, maintenance of equipment, coordination of pick-ups and deliveries, and overseeing quality control.

Soil scientist Among the many tasks they might perform, scientists in the field of agriculture test soil samples for minerals and contaminants.

By studying the soil, scientists can recommend which crops the land can support, how much livestock can feed in an area and the implications of agriculture on the area as it pertains to managing natural resources.

Willing Workers’ Bacle raises grand champion steer Weis finishes County Fair career on high note

Entering the Kenosha County Fair, Zach Bacle had positive vibes about Jessie, his 1,370-pound crossbred steer.

The steer, he said, was bought from the Runkel family, which captured top awards from the Racine County Fair and Wisconsin State Fair.

“The Runkels are the ones that won at the state fair,” Bacle said. “I bought it from (Reid Runkel) and they know their steers and I learned from them.”

“I thought I had a really good chance of winning it,” he added.

That chance came to fruition, as the Wheatland Willing Workers 4-H club member took Jessie to a grand champion win, which was the first of his four-year career in the county fair show ring.

Bacle, 17, an incoming Westosha Central High School senior, said the win was quick progression.

“This is my fourth year and I have never won anything before,” he said. “This is the first year I ever won anything and it was grand champion.”

His first win comes after spending countless hours with Jessie in the barn, where he would often start working with the steer at 5:30 a.m., feeding him three times a day while balancing a job. Bacle then returned to the barn after 10 p.m. to continue his work.

“I spent a lot of hours with him,” he said. “You pretty much get what you put into it.”

While Bacle dedicated his time raising

the steer, he said the win would not have been possible without the help of his family, including mother, Lorna, and brother, Colton.

“My mom helped me out a lot (and) my brother helped me out a lot with the feeding,” Bacle said.

Bacle’s victory, however, came with a set of challenges.

Those included a stronger desire to win and his steer’s stubborn demeanor.

“I put a lot more work into it this year,” he said. “He is the hardest steer I ever had to work on, he is so stubborn. He would not walk.”

Weis ends on high note

In her last appearance at the Kenosha County Fair, Carrie Weis was just looking to make the most of it, but she came away a winner in multiple categories.

Weis, a Carthage College sophomore, became grand champion for a 280-pound crossbred pig she calls Lily and also won senior showman.

Additionally, Weis had a 266-pound Duroc pig named Alivia, which finished second in the breed category to Paige Armbruster.

Weis then collected three Dairy awards, including Supreme Grand Champion for a 6-year-old Heifer she calls Mistletoe, which also won in the senior Holstein category.

Her other award came in the junior Holstein category with Cheddar.

“It feels amazing because I have wanted this so bad and it is nice that I finally got it in my last year of showing,” said Weis, who has shown pigs for nine years. “Even if I didn’t win supreme champion or grand champion, I still would have made the best of my last year showing.”

Weis, who graduated from Westosha Central in 2017, studies nursing at Carthage.
