Welcome to the Village of Darien: It all began in 1837 name until 1840, when it was renamed Darien, after Darien, New York, the previous home of several families of influence in the community. John Bruce was the first postmaster when the post office was established in 1839. The first town meeting was held in the Bruce home in 1842. In 1845 he was made chairman of the Board of County Supervisors. The Commons continued to be the center of the village until the railroad came through in 1856. At this time the businesses moved from around The Commons to Wisconsin Street and the village was called, for a time, “New Darien”. Bruce built a large grain warehouse in 1857 with a capacity of 5,000 bushels. At the same time he was part owner of a general store. The telegraph arrived in 1861.
The first regular school building in the village known as District No. 7 was erected at

124 S. Walworth Street. In 1858 a two story brick building was erected, with an addition added in 1869. This was used as the Darien Public School until 1903, when a new grade and high school building was built directly across the street. The Village of Darien was incorporated in May of 1951 and an election was held in June of 1951 to name the first village officials. The population has risen from 717 in 1951 to almost 1,600. The village acquired water and sewer in 1970. Within the village there are a total of 586 residential and commercial meters. The village is home to three churches, an elementary school, four parks, several subdivisions, two large grain elevators, and an industrial park with 14 businesses. A new library and senior center building opened in 2004.

In the spring of 1837, John Bruce, Jr., of New York State, purchased all of Section 27 that is the present site of the Village of Darien. He built a log house that was also used as a hotel, where the Methodist Parsonage now stands. He immediately set aside a strip of land consisting of three acres in perpetuity to be known as The Commons. This was a place for soldiers to drill and later became known as Bruce Park. The trail next to The Commons was an Indian trail that later became a territorial road. This was used as a military road connecting Fort Dearborn (Chicago), and Fort Madison and Portage. In 1838 an act of the Wisconsin Territorial Legislature created the Town of Delavan, consisting of four townships of which Darien was one. By an act of the Legislature, in 1840, Darien was detached and formed into a separate township. A settlement sprang up called “Bruceville” and kept the

Corn is called maize by most countries, this comes from the Spanish word “maiz.” Corn is a cereal crop that is part of the grass family. An ear or cob of corn is actually part of the flower and an individual kernel is a seed. On average an ear of corn has 800 kernels in 16 rows. Corn will always have an even number of rows on each cob. A bushel is a unit of measure for volumes of dry commodities such as shelled corn kernels. 1 Bushel of corn is equal to 8 gallons. With the exception of Antarctica, corn is produced on every continent in the world. There are over 3,500 different uses for corn products. As well as being eaten by the cob, corn is also processed and used as a major component in many food items like cereals, peanut butter, potato chips, soups, marshmallows, ice cream, baby food, cooking oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressing, and chewing gum. Juices and soft drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain corn sweeteners. A bushel of corn can sweeten 400 cans of soft drink. Corn and its by products are also found in many non-food items such as fireworks, rust preventatives, glue, paint, dyes, laundry detergent, soap, aspirin, antibiotics, paint, shoe polish, ink, cosmetics, the manufacturing of photographic film, and in the production of plastics. Corn is also used as feeding fodder for livestock and poultry and found in domestic pet food.

As of 2012, the United States produces 40% of the worlds total harvest making it the biggest maize producer in the world (273,832,130 tonnes produced in 2012). An area termed the “Corn Belt” in the US where growing conditions are ideal includes the states of Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Michigan, Missouri, Kansas and Kentucky.

In the days of the early settlers to North America corn was so valuable that it was used as money and traded for other products such as meat and furs. Corn is now a completely domesticated plant so you’re unlikely to find it growing in the wild. Corn can be produced in various colors including blackish, bluish-gray, purple, green, red, white and the most common yellow.

Walworth County Cloggers to perform Saturday It began in the Appalachian Mountain region and was brought to America by Irish, Scottish, English and Dutch Germans who settled there in the mid 1700s. The settlers shared dances from their home countries and new ‘combined’ forms of dance began to evolve. Our Native Americans, African Americans and even gypsies

added to the evolution of this unique dance. And the evolution continued. Canadian step dance, tap and jazz dance have influenced how clogging changed over time. And we still see this evolution — with influences from street dance, hiphop and more making their way into the clogging routines of today.

The Walworth County Cloggers will perform at the Darien CornFest on Saturday at 4 p.m. What is Clogging? Clogging is a Percussive Dance Form — so yes, it is similar to tap, irish and canadian step dance. But clogging is more than that. Clogging is very much a part of our American heritage.
