Man sentenced to 48 years for murder of ex-girlfriend DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin announced recently that Jose Loera, 38, formerly of Aurora, has been sentenced to 48 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for the 2014 murder of 32-yearold Heather Jacobi of Aurora. On Sept. 20, Loera entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of first degree murder in front of Judge George Bakalis, who handed down last week’s sentence. At approximately 7:30 a.m. on March 29, 2014, the Aurora Police Department received a phone call requesting a well-being check at Jacobi’s residence. Upon their arrival at the home, officers discovered Jacobi deceased in the home. An investigation into the murder revealed that in the evening hours of March 28, Loera went to Jacobi’s residence. While at Jacobi’s home, an argument between the two turned violent, resulting in Loera beating and strangling Jacobi with a scarf. Loera then fled the residence and returned to his home. Loera, who has been held in the DuPage County Jail on $5 million bond since his arrest, will be required to serve 100 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
