November brought some good news. Brighterway had been successful in its bid for a grant of £143,000 to fund a major project called, ‘Create Wellbeing – Eat Well’ We had popped a question to our patients, supporters and staff asking their views on what would be fun to do after the difficulties of Covid19 and numerous lockdowns They came back with answers centring on food, togetherness, nature and helping one another. The fun began and our project bid had three major strands to it:

Strand 1 - The Southern Health Incredible Edible Community

Ten years ago Dominic Lodge met a lady who was involved in ‘Incredible Edible’ She told him the story of the people of Todmorden, West Yorkshire, who grew vegetables around the town for all citizens to enjoy Their vision was to create kind, confident and connected communities through the power of food. Her parting comment to him was ‘if you eat, you’re in’ you can join the Incredible Edible Network.

Remembering these words it seemed a good way to fulfil the wishes of those who inspired the bid and so the Southern Health Incredible Edible Community was conceived. The setting up and creation of powerful human and nature connections through food It will involve patients, staff, visitors and local citizens coming together to grow fresh produce in large planters on 20 Trust sites - growing food and growing social networks benefitting physical and mental health

Strand 2 - Home Cooking from around the World recipe book

The bid had to contain a legacy aspect to remember all those who had given so much during the height of the Covid19 pandemic Some Trusts were bidding for benches and other furniture Others were looking to plant trees or to put up a memorial We thought of food. With 6,000 staff from all around the world and a diverse patient, carer and public, the idea of a recipe book celebrating who we are seemed a grand idea

Strand 3 - Health, Healing and Hope – walks, trails and caring for nature

There is, as we know, an undisputable link between nature and health. We have many beautiful open spaces around some of the properties we use and so some of the grant will be used to celebrate the biodiversity present

And so the grant will attend to

Boardwalk and ponds – final phase of re-establishing our meadowland at Tatchbury. The existing boardwalk will be refitted by volunteers to provide access for people using a wheelchair or requiring a stable path 5 redundant ponds removed and a new one created to add to the biodiversity of the meadow
