Emily McGrath Meet the Designer, Owner, Blogger, Mom, Wife...

The descriptions written above are in no particular order, since it just depends on the day and hour as to which is more prominent. Just like many of you, I wear many hats and sometimes more than one at a time. Growing up, I always knew I wanted to run my own business. As my mom will tell you, my name “Emily” means “Industrious One,” and Momma always said she named me correctly! As many of you know, I LOVE to antique, decorate, re-decorate, re-purpose, and get creative! I have always had a passion for making things new again. So in 2015, our two oldest sons had just left for college and the military. After a whirlwind senior year and going from five-people household to a three-person household, I was going stir crazy! Again, if you know me, you know I do not like to be idle. During this time, I was looking for an office space for my job working in education. (I was in education for 10 years before starting the shop.) The Lord is always on time! He not only provided me with the perfect office space, but the perfect starting location for my business in the SoCo District of Corinth, Miss. The space was a little large for what we needed for the office, so my husband, Jason, suggested I open the shop that I had always wanted to have. SHOCK is the only way to describe my reaction. I had mentioned several ideas to him before, and he didn’t agree or didn’t feel that it was a good time. Again, this was confirmation that this was the Lord’s timing, not ours! So in May 2015, we opened Rowan House. We offered Chalk Paint (decorative paint by Annie

Sloan), repurposed furniture, gifts and home decor. Since this time, we have moved the shop into a space three times the size we started out with and offer everything from interior design, furniture, upholstery, wedding registry, home décor, and pretty much anything else you can want or need! Over the last several years, our business family in the SoCo District has grown from just a few to now many new shops, and each and every one is unique in its own way. We have an excellent group of entrepreneurs on our street and in our downtown area. It is the epitome of Southern culture and entrepreneurship, all wrapped up in a small-town-charm package. I pray that our little shop will thrive and be an inspiration to those that currently do business with us and those that are to come. If you would like to visit us in person, pop on down to 604 Wick Street in Corinth, Miss. You can also “visit” us on Facebook and Instagram, or email us at info@southerndujour.com with any questions, suggestions, or comments! We would love for you to visit our YouTube channel as well, “Rowan on Wick”! We look forward to seeing you soon!

IN THE WORKSHOP

Keeping the arts alive

Today I had the privilege of talking with Katy Stanley and Paige Frame with Craft Workshops Corinth. These women are revitalizing crafts in a fun way while creating opportunity for a dying art. I asked them a series of questions about what they’re doing and how we can participate. Me: Tell us a little about what you’re doing? Paige: Our mission statement is, “We are dedicated crafters with a heart for sharing what we’ve learned with others. We would love to teach you about some of our favorite hobbies!” Our main goal is to teach and inspire people to start these different types of crafts. We really focus more on needle & thread crafts. That can range anywhere from children’s sewing to weaving on a tapestry loom. I do a lot of hand embroidery, and Katy does more children’s clothing. Katy has decades of smocking experience! Katy: I’ve been sewing for my children for years, and

IN THE WORKSHOP they’re getting older. So, here! I’m learning as much as everyone else! Paige: We just want to offer affordable workshops that people can come to without having to invest a lot just to get their feet wet. We’re not really pros at any of it. This brings us so much fulfillment on our own, but it’s so much more fun with a group.

Paige: When we realized that it was a long-term goal, we thought, “Why don’t we just start these workshops from our houses and see if there is interest?” We planned once a month to have a different workshop with a different craft and a variety of skills.

IN THE WORKSHOP class, she explained it, and I thought, “Okay, makes sense.” Me: What do you hope to achieve through these workshops? Paige: I think we want to make people aware that these crafts are out there. Katy: I think our generation is sort of the beginning of the end. Home-economics no longer existed when we were in school. These basic skills are no longer being taught, so our generation doesn’t know how to do it. We’re teaching people that “Hey, this is easy, and you can do it.” Paige: I think that would be my main goal -- exposing people to a variety of different crafts and seeing which one takes. Keep these dying arts alive! Me: What would you like to leave our readers with? Paige: Come to our workshops!! (laughing) Katy: They’re so FUN!!! If there’s something you want to learn how to do, and it’s in our skill set, we would love to teach you how to

do it! Paige: This is still new for us, so we’re still evolving. If someone wants private sewing lessons, we’re happy to do that. We’re still trying to figure out exactly where we want to take this, so we’re remaining very fluid in our long-term goals. Katy: We have several workshops coming up, some for kids over the fall break, Christmas break. For the kids, we’re going to do a cute, felted necklace, and we’re working on a Christmas garland we’re trying to produce so that people can buy it finished with their choice of designs or as a kit to put together themselves.

If you know me and have ever been into our shop, you know that I love to paint, recreate, and repurpose furniture. I’m always on the lookout for interesting, useful pieces. Another thing you should know about me is that I LOVE Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan! Having branded chalk paint for more than 25 years, Annie is the leader when it comes to chalk paint. Chalk Paint® is a decorative and versatile paint that has many uses and can be applied without priming or sanding. When I heard “no sanding,” I was hooked! It can be applied to almost any surface, including wood, plastic, glass, and fabrics. It also dries quickly. (Allow a longer dry time in the South since humidity slows the dry time.) Since I love doing repurposed furniture projects but definitely want to keep it budget friendly, I utilize Facebook Marketplace as well as estate sales and yard sales to find great pieces. I discovered this particular gem of a piece while perusing through Facebook. This small buffet was screaming for an update and to be useful again. When someone

asks me, “What are you going to do to it?” I usually respond, “Whatever it tells me to do.” This piece spoke to me and said “something rich but with a pop of color, too.” So, Antibes Green it was. I started with a generous coat of Antibes Green Chalk Paint® by Annie Sloan, and then I applied another good coat to cover the piece. I decided to use Annie’s paintbrush for this project since the bristles are strong, yet pliable, and are made of predominately pure bristle with natural split ends, which makes this brush an excellent tool for applying paint. With its soft bristles and rounded end, this brush is also easy to hold for applying your paint evenly. After letting the paint dry and cure overnight, it was time to apply a soft wax. Soft wax acts as a sealant and protectant for any surface. It is highly durable and works well on kitchen tables and cabinets, too. By applying soft wax, it enhances the color of your surface and can give a matte finish or be buffed into a beautiful sheen. Annie has several soft waxes for your

use. Clear is the most basic and applicable when using chalk paint. By applying clear first, this allows you to move any colored waxes around to highlight your piece. After applying a coat of Annie Sloan Clear Soft Wax® with my handy wax brush, also made from natural bristles, it was time to apply my colored wax. I chose black to “antique” this piece. Using the Annie Sloan Black Soft Wax® sparingly, I gently massaged the wax onto the piece, working in small increments, wiping with a lint-free rag as I worked my way around the buffet. For your own project, you can continue applying the soft wax until you get the desired look you are trying to achieve. If too much colored wax is applied, apply a little more clear wax to the area and wipe with a lintfree cloth to remove the excess. Buff until the desired look is achieved.

Chalk Paint® decorative paint by Annie Sloan is fool proof and addictive. Be forewarned, you will be hooked and be painting By using colored waxes (Black Soft Wax & a smidge of White everything! DESIGN Wow! Look how far we’ve come in such a short time! I know for homeowners Kevin and Kim Eubank, this project might not have flown by as fast as it did for me. Brandon, owner of Barnes Construction, first approached me about doing a project for some friends of his back in April 2019. He relayed that the couple wanted some assistance with their renovation. Little did I know that this “small” renovation would become so extensive! On first meeting Kevin and Kim, I knew right away we would be kindred spirits! They had a plan, a very detailed plan, which I loved! Kevin is an engineer by trade and a very successful businessman. He made lists for each room and what he would

like to see in each part of the house, and Kim, a retired educator, had done the same. It is a designer’s dream to be able to have clients who know exactly what they want/need, and, as an added bonus, they were able to communicate those wants and needs. The Eubank home is situated on their family farm in Booneville, Miss., on a hill with breathtaking views from both the front and rear of the house. This red brick home, constructed in 2002, is a typical southern style home where a large red barn, grain silo, and dairy barn once stood. It has been the Eubank home for almost 18 years and where they have raised their two beautiful daughters, Molly Beth and Chloe. The Eubanks expressed

DESIGN interest in updating their already lovely home to accommodate their growing family, which currently includes the addition of a son-in-law and a granddaughter. They wanted to make a home that every member of the family could enjoy as well as an office space and a space for Kevin, and experienced hunter, to house all of his trophy pieces. After a few weeks, we presented a game plan complete with renovation of the original part of the home as well as the addition that would be added once the original renovation was complete. The Eubanks quickly decided they were happy with the plan, so we made plans to move forward. Beginning with the demolition and renovation of the kitchen, we then worked our way through the rest of the home, replacing literally everything from floor to ceiling in the living area, bathrooms, bedrooms, master bedroom and bath, and even deconstructing the staircase and assembling it back together again! The Eubanks have been a dream to work with! And with such a great community of resources and friends, this project was smooth sailing! Hallelujah! Now the Eubanks have a refreshing, inviting space where they can entertain their lovely family and friends in an intimate atmosphere. And after all was said and done, I can easily see this kitchen being “the spot” to be! We chose Shaker style cabinetry by Calvery’s Cabinets

DESIGN in Booneville, Miss., owned by Randy & Tereasa Calvery, with matte gold hardware. To add warmth to this mostly white kitchen, we used a brick tile floor with warm hues such as terra cotta, creams, and reds along with a wood tongue and groove ceiling to replace the simple sheetrock ceiling from before. We ran the tongue and groove ceiling on the diagonal to add interest and draw your eye into this spacious interior. This kitchen is the perfect mix of color and textures as well as modern and rustic styles. By using the geometric pendants with an antique gold finish (Hinkley), the sleek matte gold handles, and the clean white granite counter top (Cambria), this space boasts modern sophistication with traditional coziness. From the soft close drawers, lighted upper cabinets to display cherished pieces, two ovens, pot filler, prep sink, traditional two-bowl porcelain sink, and the industrial refrigerator/freezer, this space has everything you could ever desire. Simple changes in the dining room made this space transform from vintage into a charming dining space. We removed the wall separating the front entrance and the dining area, making this area a much larger area to entertain. By combining the many heirlooms handed down to Kim, cleaning the chandeliers, and adding a new coat of paint, this room came to life once more. In the master bathroom, we

DESIGN

carried over the clean, light, and airy look by using the same white, Shaker-style cabinetry and granite counter top. We used a light wall color (Gossamer Veil by Sherwin Williams) to keep the look fresh. And to add a little sparkle, we chose a modern chandelier (Hinkley) over the large soaker tub. The stainless faucets with their soft curves and classic look make this master quite charming. Keeping “all things modern,” we used two lighted, LED mirrors above the vanity for added brightness and usability. This master bath is one that you will not want to leave! It’s always great to get feedback from our clients once a project is complete, and we were so excited The Eubanks seemed to love the finished project as much as we did. “Mrs. Emily McGrath from Rowan House helped us create the best design

for our family,” Kim said. “We are so happy with our ‘new to us’ kitchen, from the wooden ceilings to the Portstone brick floors to the classic shaker cabinets. Her eye for detail is perfect! “Our enlarged dining room space with custom drapery is picture perfect and so inviting for family dinners. Our master bathroom is a retreat unto itself. We love the oversized shower and soaking tub complete with handmade teak steps along with the LED vanity mirrors. “Mrs. Emily listened to our wants and needs in our house renovation. She created the perfect designs and incorporated sentimental pieces we already had.”From the custom window treatments to the crystal doorknobs, this remodel has been a dream to complete! Making mealtime meaningful

So many families have thrown off the traditional sit down table meals and shifted to paper plates and living room eating, but at Southern Du Jour, we want to bring the table back! Mealtime can be a very meaningful time with your family and a way to make memories and really bond. To help you make the most of mealtime fellowship, here are a few tips on how to reconnect over a breakfast, lunch, or dinner • Put away the electronics • We have a rule at our house of no electronics at the table, which is designed to encourage conversation. If you or

your family members are used to being glued to your phones, it may seem like a daunting rule at first, but you can do it! And the payoff is worth it. It’s amazing what all you will learn about your family and how interesting they can be if you just make an effort to be present and talk. Try it!

Remove your turkey from the package and wash turkey off with water. IN THE KITCHEN tato. This will ensure your moisture will stay inside the cavity and the garlic and onion will infuse into the turkey. Next, inject your turkey with the Creole butter marinade all over. As you inject your butter, the turkey will begin to plump up. This will add so much flavor and keep it moist while cooking. I also add some organic chicken stock in the base of the pan to keep the turkey moist as well. Then, cover your turkey with aluminum foil and place into pre-heated oven. Baste every 30 minutes or so. Cook your turkey 15-20 minutes per pound. With around 30 minutes to go, uncover your turkey and let it brown. Internal temperature should be 165 degrees. Deviled Eggs 1 dozen eggs ½ c. mayonnaise 2 tsp. mustard ¼ c. sweet jalapenos, diced 2 tbsp. sweet jalapenos, juice Salt to taste Black pepper to taste Paprika to taste 1 gallon-sized bag For perfect boiled eggs: place a pan of water (add a tbsp. of salt into your water, which will allow your eggs to float a little without knocking on the bottom of the pan) on the stove with the water just covering your

eggs. Bring your water to a rolling boil, then turn off heat, cover and let rest for 12 minutes. Pour off hot water and run cold water over the eggs for a few minutes to stop the cooking. Let sit in cold water until cool. This makes the perfect boiled egg! Peel your eggs and slice in half length-wise, removing the center yolk, placing your egg whites onto a tray and the yolks into another bowl. Once you have peeled and separated your yolks, it’s time to mix your yolk mixture. I call this the yummy goodness! In your bowl with the egg yolks, add your mayonnaise, mustard, diced jalapenos, juice, salt and pepper. Mix with a wooden spoon, or you can use a hand mixer to get a super creamy texture! Lastly, you’ll need a gallon sized bag. Cut the tip off one corner of the bag or use a piping bag with a broad tip to pipe your yummy goodness into each egg center. You can also spoon your mixture into the centers if you don’t have a piping bag or gallon bag. Once you have added the mixture to each of your eggs, sprinkle with paprika. (I love to use Hungarian Paprika because it has a sweetness to it.) Voilà! These eggs are a must at any of our family get-togethers! Be forewarned, these will disappear very quickly, so I usually double the recipe by necessity.

You’ll be able to smell the garlic and herbs infuse together! Sauté for around 5 minutes, then add green beans, mushrooms, salt, and pepper. Cover and sauté’ on medium heat until green beans are soft, about 15-20 minutes. Pour into a serving dish and sprinkle with the grated Parmesan cheese. Enjoy! This dish makes a beautiful presentation with its vibrant green hues and accents of white from the Parmesan cheese and sprigs of herbs. 1 ½ c. milk ¾ c. sugar 1 tbsp. sugar 1 egg

1 tbsp. salt 2 tbsp. yeast 2 c. warm water 9-10 c. all-purpose flour 1 c. butter Scald milk, ¾ c. sugar, and ½ c. butter (cubed) in a microwave safe bowl for about 2 minutes. Stir in 1-2 c. of flour to cool the mixture. Add egg and salt. Allow mixture to cool for a couple of minutes. In a measuring cup, dissolve yeast into warm water and 1 tbsp. sugar. Let sit for a couple of minutes until bubbly. Add yeast mixture to milk mixture. Gradually stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon, a couple of cups at a time. Cover bowl with plastic wrap and leave in a warm place to rise until doubled in size. While dough is rising, use your computer to type out in columns a list of things you, your kids, friends, and family are grateful for. Print, and cut into strips. Butter 2 cookie sheets. Cover your work surface with flour and dump your dough out. Divide dough into 4 equal balls. One ball at a time, roll dough into a circle similar to a pizza crust. Spread about 2 tbsp.

softened butter on the entire surface of your dough. Cut the circle of dough into quarters with a pizza cutter, then cut each quarter into three pieces. You will end up with 12 triangles from each ball of dough. Place one strip of paper lengthwise on each triangle of dough. The butter will keep them from sticking. Roll the dough starting with the wide end of the triangle. Tuck the tail under, curve the roll slightly, and line up on a cookie sheet in three rows, 8 rolls per row, for a total of 24 rolls per pan. Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Allow rolls to rise until touching and full in size. Bake until golden brown, about 10-15 minutes. Brush hot rolls with melted butter. If you were to ask my kids for their favorite Thanksgiving tradition, they would undoubtedly tell you about these rolls. If you were to ask my friends’ kids, they’d probably tell you the same. And I’m not going to lie, they might be my favorite

thing, too! Several years ago, I came across this idea on Pinterest, and I thought it might be a fun activity for our annual Friendsgiving. We all had kids, and they all were going to be together for a lively Thanksgiving meal. So, the request went out, and the lists of all the things the kids were thankful for started rolling in. They were sweet, thoughtful, and often pretty funny. They were thankful for their families, their friends, their churches, their dogs, their chickens, pie, deodorant… The list was wildly diverse, and as everyone unrolled their crescents, they made a game of guessing who wrote what. At any rate, the rolls were a hit, and now Thanksgiving just would not be the same without them! Not only are they a delicious addition to your Thanksgiving meal, but they are a sweet reminder to pause, consider, and share all we have to be thankful for. I hope your family and friends enjoy them as much as mine do!

Susan Bailey with Jesse Sutton

A few weeks ago, I stopped by the bar at Smith, one of Corinth’s favorite watering holes, to grab a cocktail with my husband. While there are many benefits to living in a small town, one of the sweetest perks has got to be walking into a bar where the bartender greets you by name with a smile and asks if you’re having your usual. Be Brave parting words

Sneak Peak of our next issue

34 Winter • Southern Du Jour

Over the last few months, my focus has been about “Being Brave.” Thinking back over the past few years, many changes have taken place in our lives. We, my family and I, have seen deaths, births, graduations, our boys growing into men and moving away, beginning and growing a business, developing property, new friendships, and old friends moving away. But through it all, God has been faithful, and we have been brave! I don’t know which season you are going through at this time, but know that through each and every season, we rely on each other’s bravery for inspiration and encouragement. We would love to hear your “Bravery” story! Send us your story at shoprowanhouse@ gmail.com. Our team wants to hear from you and offer encouraging words. “For the spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us POWER, LOVE, and SELF-DISCIPLINE.” 2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
