LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT: Karen Gross

s I write this letter, the summer is ending and you can feel fall in the air. With student athletes now on campus, the academic year is ramping up. As our new students and returning students arrive, the campus is bustling with activity—which is exciting for everyone. Our campus theme for the 2014–2015 academic year is “Make It Happen,” and the campus book each new student receives—This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable Men and Women, based on the NPR series—reinforces that theme. In his foreword to “This I Believe,” Studs Terkel writes: “There is something we can do while we’re alive and breathing on this planet. It is to become an activist in the pursuit of a world in which it would be easier for people to behave decently. Being an activist is self-explanatory: you act; you take part in something outside yourself.” I have been reﬂecting on the myriad of ways in which we can all embrace action this year. To be sure, there is one key action in which we are all engaged: learning—actively pursuing knowledge, information, experience, wisdom and wideranging skills. Our annual academic theme has inspired me to deem September “Education Month.” Throughout the month, the campus will be engaged in a series of conversations about education and its importance in today’s world. Events included the Aims of Education Address on September 4 at Convocation where I shared with the community what is for me a central aspect of education: increasing the “opportunity architecture” for students. On September 15 our campus will be involved in a “leadership swap day” where three women heads of school will switch places: I am headed to the Emma Willard School in Troy, NY (EWS); Trudy Hall, the head of Emma will visit Maple Street School in Manchester, VT (MSS); and Fran Bisselle, the head of MSS will come to SVC as its leader for a day. At the end of the day, we will gather together to share what we have learned— messaging the importance of a “kink-free” educational pipeline where students can move through seamlessly and where leaders are knowledgeable about and respectful of each institutions’ aims and goals. Throughout the month, several of us on campus will be blogging on the value of higher education to individuals, their families and our communities, and sharing strategies for “Making Education Happen.” While I will be leaving my role as President of the College at the end of the semester to return to Washington, D.C. (see story on page 3), I will be available to help with the transition of the new President. I also plan to be on campus one week each month in October, November and December, meeting with Senior Leaders, staﬀ and faculty, watching some athletic events and engaging with students and the larger community. SVC has been my home for eight years, and I am proud of what we have accomplished together. My thanks to each and every one of you for all the work you have done to contribute to our successes, to help “Make it Happen!” There are many successes to come; this I believe. I look forward to bearing witness to it all.

Presidential Search is Well Underway

The SVC Board of Trustees has established a trustee-based Presidential Search Committee and an Advisory Committee comprised of faculty and staff to assist in the process of identifying a successor to President Karen Gross. With the help of executive search firm Archer-Martin Associates of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and input from the SVC community, they are now conducting a comprehensive and rigorous search for a new leader. Veterans’ Scholar Program takes shape for 2014-2015 SVC piloted its Veterans’ Scholar Program this fall with a new director in place and plans underway for new initiatives ensuring veterans success on campus and engagement in the veteran community. Lieutenant Colonel John Miles is leading the way as Program Director. Miles, from Norfolk, VA, has been with the United States Marine Corps for 25 years, serving two deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan. He worked as Executive Office/Marine Officer Instructor at the SUNY Maritime NROTC Unit in the Bronx, NY. Miles’ position at SVC is to advocate for veterans and help them navigate the admissions, financial aid, and enrollment process and to ensure they have the tools needed to achieve academic success. Programs in place include: special orientation measures, on- and off-campus activities, family friendly events, recognition of military service birthdays, presentation of the SVC Challenge Coin for military service, and participation in the VALOR lecture program (Veterans Academy of Learning Opportunities for Residents) at the Vermont Veteran’s Home in Bennington. SVC is a member of the Student Veterans of America.

Student Publishing at SVC and the Northshire Bookstore, an independent bookstore in Manchester, Vermont. Through the Shires Press Series, fulltime students at SVC can write and publish their own book. Students will study the foundations of book publishing, while working on their own manuscript from conception to completion. Upon successful completion of the project, students will receive ﬁve printed copies of their published work from the Northshire Bookstore’s Shires Press, with opportunities to promote their book in the retail (Manchester, Vt., and Saratoga Springs, NY), bookstore locations and online marketplace (www.northshire.com). The Northshire Bookstore will also provide assignment of the ISBN and barcode of the book, and students will receive royalty fees paid for any sales of the book. RAD SCIENCES CERTIFICATE PROGRAM IN COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY NOW OFFERED

tarting this fall, a Radiologic Sciences Certificate Program in Computed Tomography (CT) will be offered at SVC. This one-year, fully online, post-graduate certificate program is designed for registered radiologic technologists who want to advance their careers into the area of CT. Computed Tomography is a process of imaging the body in 3-D using diagnostic x-rays. CT is one of the fastest growing areas of diagnostic imaging today, according to SVC Program Director Linda Lippacher. “If you are dually certified in diagnostic imaging and CT,” Lippacher said, “your job opportunities not only double but triple.” Through the SVC program, coursework is online, but technologists can be located anywhere and arrange to complete preceptor work at a hospital or facility near them. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be prepared to apply for the advanced certification examination provided by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (AART). This opportunity is open to registered technologists in the areas of radiography, nuclear medicine and/or radiation therapy. SVC/SJC CHRONICLE

SVC Trustees Name Gregg Swain, Psy.D., to Board

Teaching and Learning Director Named National Endowment for Humanities Scholar

atherine McKeen, Director of Center for Teaching and Learning at SVC, was selected as a Summer Scholar of the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) from a nationwide applicant pool to attend one of 30 seminars and institutes supported by NEH. The Endowment is a federal agency that, each summer, supports enrichment opportunities at colleges, universities and cultural institutions, so that faculty can work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines. McKeen participated in a month-long seminar on Socrates this summer at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon. Approximately 437 NEH Summer Scholars took part in diﬀerent programs of study. The Board of Trustees at Southern Vermont College appointed Gregg Swain, Psy.D., as a new Board Member at its recent meeting. A resident of New York City and Vermont, Swain has a strong history of involvement with non-proﬁts. A graduate of Smith College, Swain received a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Baylor University. She has served on numerous boards and committees for organizations in the New York area, including as a Member of the Board of Managers at West Side YMCA in New York City since 2003. She and her husband are Board Members of the Bronx Charter School for Better Learning in New York City. Swain served on the board at Grosvenor Neighborhood House where she was Board President. She was a former Women’s Committee member at Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club. As a member of various committees at New York’s St. James Church, Swain ran the Soup Kitchen for the Homeless from 1986 to 1990. She recently was a member of the Vestry at Church of the Epiphany in NYC. In addition to her community work, Swain is a Mah Jongg art historian whose book, “Mah Jongg: The Art of the Game” will be published in October by Tuttle Publishing. Swain will be presenting her work at SVC this academic year.

Eileen Rice Named Vermont Nurse Leadership Fellow

ssistant professor of Nursing Eileen Rice, Ph.D., RN, has been selected as a Leadership Fellow by the Vermont Action Coalition, part of Governor Peter Shumlin’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Nursing. The program “prepares nurse fellows to lead and inform healthcare decision making by leveraging their frontline perspective and providing additional insight into the business and ﬁnancing of healthcare,” according to Mary Val Palumbo of the University of Vermont and co-leader of VAC. Rice is an experienced registered nurse who has taught at SVC since 2006. She holds a Ph.D. in Education (with a specialization in Nursing Education) from Capella University, an M.S. in Nursing from Pace University and a B.A. degree in Biology from Middlebury College.

‘CLEAR MIND’— Sculpture by Gregory Smith will be on display, along with other new and selected works by the artist, in the Burgdorﬀ Gallery until October 5. A Vermont native from North Pownal, Smith works with wood, clay and bronze; his media of choice is welded steel and copper. Smith began his sculpture studies with Isaac Witkin and Brower Hatcher at Bennington College and later studied with Paul Aschenbach at the University of Vermont. He has shown his work in New York and throughout New England.

The College has seen many new programs and traditions evolve under the leadership of President Karen Gross—initiatives that have not only attracted more students but have increased the success rate for students to proceed to and through college. There is the Mountaineer Scholars Program, Veterans’ Scholar Program, Campus Community Dinner Series, Shires Press Series, Bookends traditions, and new sports programs, to name a few. To ensure the future success of programs that are now well established at SVC, the College is pleased to announce the creation of the Karen Gross Innovation Fund for Student Success. Jess Clausnitzer ’08 was married July 20, 2013, to Stephanie. They bought a house in Bennington in December of 2013. Their son Jess Clausnitzer, Jr., was born May 16, 2014.

Freshmen Mallory Celeste and Lauryn Zovistoski, and senior outﬁelder Erika Garay were named to the All-NECC Second Team; junior Emily Fleming received an Honorable Mention. Fleming, Shelby Jones, and Katie Raymond were named to the 2014 NECC Spring Academic All-Conference squad. Katie Raymond was named SVC’s 2014 Mountaineer Female Scholar Athlete.

Sophomore outﬁelder Richard Rios was named to All-NECC Second Team and shortstop Chris Nicastro, Jr., collected an All-NECC Honorable Mention. LaBadia was the recipient of the 2014 Scott McKenzie Sportsman of the Year Award and was selected to the 2014 D3Baseball.com All-New England Third Team.

PROFESSOR GORHAM NAMED NCAA REPRESENTATIVE SVC faculty member Jeb Gorham was recognized by the NCAA for his outstanding work as a Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) on campus. He was selected as Division III FAR Fellow and was invited to attend the 2014 NCAA Division III Far Fellows Institute Conference in Indianapolis in October.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL Senior Anthony Barahona was selected to play on the USA DIII Men’s Volleyball Team—Brazil Tour 2014, a team made up of the best NCAA Division III volleyball players throughout the United States. The team spent a week playing in Campinas, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. Barahona was also named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference First Team and to the 2014 NECC Spring Academic AllConference Team after an outstanding senior season with SVC.

IN MEMORIUM The SVC community mourns the recent loss of Campus Safety Lead-Officer Mark Poirier, who lost his courageous battle with a lengthy illness. A U.S. Army veteran, he was referred to as “big Mark’ by students and staff and was affectionately embraced by SVC athletes in particular, with whom he shared a mutual love of sports. Mark was a devoted father of two daughters (one an SVC student) and an adoring grandfather of two grandsons.

The College also recently learned of the passing of Loretta Epstein, wife of former Director of Athletics and faculty member Bill Epstein. Bill was instrumental in the growth of SVC athletics and after his death in 2004, his wife Loretta remained an enthusiastic supporter of a scholarship in his name. She especially enjoyed coming to campus annually to meet scholarship recipients and visit with staﬀ.
