Editor’s NOTE Without a doubt, writing this note has been the most challenging part of creating this entire magazine. As the file goes to print, I am met with equal parts excitement and anxiety. I was told, “just write from your heart... and don’t overthink it.” So here it is. Downtown Marietta is my home. It is where I live, where I work, and where I choose to raise my son. It is a community of dreamers and doers. Of wishers and thinkers. It is a place of people who aspire to do - and be - better. So what does “Southerly” mean? I can’t define it. But I know it when I feel it. It is embodied in the rich heritage of this place and reflected in the patina that gives Marietta her undeniable charm. It is told in the stories of those who share a common pride with her heritage and a steadfast desire to see her only get better with age. So sit back, relax, and enjoy this inaugural issue of SOUTHERLY: Downtown Marietta. And feel free to drop me a note. I can’t wait to tell your stories.

Bountiful Harvest RECONNECTING FAMILIES BREAKS GROUND ON A SPECIAL KIND OF COMMUNITY GARDEN

M

by Amy Selby and Melanie Crissey Marietta has a long-standing love affair with gardens. A quick tour of Cherokee Street, Church Street and Whitlock Avenue—each brimming with lush rhododendrons, sweet smelling magnolias and gardenias, and the brightly colored puffs of hydrangeas— tells you folks know their way around the gardening shed. Just up the road from Glover Park, at the intersection of Lemon and Hunt Streets, a community garden has taken root. But this garden isn’t just any garden. It is a healing garden. One where more than just flowers grow.

10 | SOUTHERLY: Downtown Marietta | beSoutherly.com

Last fall, Debbie Ponder, Executive Director of Reconnecting Families and self-admitted brown thumb, began cultivating two large patches of earth with a vision of a bountiful harvest. These once abandoned lots are now the Reconnecting Our Roots Community Garden, a garden dedicated to help children and families lead drug-free lives. As you enter the garden’s gates, the serenity of the space draws you in. It is blissfully quiet despite its proximity to the hustle and bustle of the Marietta Square. Inside are raised beds with squash ready to pick, jalapenos, carrots, banana peppers, and row upon row of tomato plants. Looking around at the wooden boxes of overflowing herbs, the large gazebo, and the shaded picnic tables, it’s hard to imagine that this idyllic space was an empty lot this time last year. The garden has received a warm welcome from the community. The project’s largest donor, Zion Baptist Church, donated the two plots of land to Reconnecting Families. An Alpharetta branch of BB&T donated special garden beds for a children’s garden, decorative benches, and blueberry bushes. The Rotary Club of Marietta donated and installed a storage shed. The garden has also received grants from the Cobb Community Foundation, Food Well Alliance, the Cobb EMC Community Foundation and the support of the Cobb County Extension and Leadership Cobb. Beyond garnering support from local businesses and foundations, the garden gives back a joyful harvest to the neighboring community. With the help of five master gardeners who mentor the garden’s twenty beds, participants of the Family Dependency Treatment Court are invited to enjoy the garden while earning community service. Some neighbors and volunteers work early in the garden to pull weeds in exchange for small shares

of overgrown herbs and vegetables. Most clippings go to the Treatment Court to share with mothers and families there. But the beautiful bounty of soil tilled pales next to the garden’s greater purpose. Here is a place to restore bonds, to embrace new friends, and to dig out all the pesky shoots to make room for fruitful vines. For treatment court participants managing sobriety, the garden offers simplicity and respite from challenges outside the gates. What is truly special about this garden is how kind and supportive everyone is with one another. When a smaller boy gets tired from carrying a shovel as long as he is tall, an older kid runs over to help. When one especially energetic boy takes off running with a pair of garden shears in his hands, every mother in line-of-sight collectively jumps to call out, “Oooh - no running with those!” and they all smile together when the boy slows to a walking pace. This is family. This is community. This is the garden. There are sticks to clear from the ground, dirt and hay to move, and floors of the shed to be swept. Sticky, sweet basil bushes require trimming and shiny banana peppers need to be picked. It’s hard work, yes, but it’s rewarding. One particularly strong girl puts all of her weight into her trowel, digging around a stubborn plant. Noticing her theatrical approach to weeding, a young woman supervising laughs, “What are you doing?” “I want to get down to the roots!” says the girl, as she leans left and right, wedging her shovel into the mulch. And getting down to the roots, to the heart and soul of growth and life, is what this garden is all about. Reconnecting Our Roots Community Garden is located at 271 Lemon Street in Marietta, GA

Red Earth Organic Farms Not too many people can say their family works together, and works well, at that. The folks at Red Earth Organic Farms happily present a counter to that argument. Side-by-side, father and son team Alan and Dave Bentoski run the daily operations of this small, first-generation organic farm. Dave’s wife, Belinda, manages their presence at both the Marietta Square and Morningside Farmers Markets and runs their social media, marketing and community outreach efforts. She’s also the resident chef, putting fresh produce to good use in creative and delicious ways. Alan, Dave, Belinda, their teenage sons, and a handful of long-time employees make up the farm family of Red Earth Organic Farms. Together they work seven days a week, 365 days a year to ensure their farm is producing top-quality certified organic produce for the longest possible growing seasons. Plant Strong

It has become our family’s mission to provide certified organic produce that’s grown and harvested with the highest standards, and packed and delivered with the utmost care, to the members of our community.

“We grow our food. We are careful land stewards,” says Belinda. A family owned and Certified Organic farm since 2007, Red Earth’s produce and land is certified organic by QCS, a USDA accredited certification program. The soil is restored, providing economic stability to the rural community. Harvests yield an extensive variety of produce ranging from acorn squash to zucchini. A diverse growing plan ensures new offerings each year, all year long.

The Creatures Beef and pork help add economic and environmental stability to the farm and land. Red Earth practices sustainable animal husbandry. All animals are raised on certified organic pasture/land/woods year-round. Cows are fed certified organic alfalfa supplement during times of low-value nutritional pasture grasses. To control disease and parasites, rotational land management is provided for all animals. Pigs are fed only certified organic, soy-free feed and raised in certified organic wood-lots. All pork is raised from a proprietary breeding herd on the Red Earth farm. As a member of the Farm’s Harvest Membership, beef and pork products can be purchased at the Marietta Square Farmers Market or added to a monthly Harvest Membership.

SOUTHERN SOLE

Q&A Interview the Southerly

You know our first question, right? What’s with the name? It’s funny. People find it hard to believe, but Boozer is actually my real name. It’s on my birth certificate. There’s more to that, right? My father was born in 1919, and the doctor that delivered him was named Dr. Boozer. My grandparents named my father after him. When I was born, my parents wanted to pass on my father’s name to me. Hence, Boozer McClure. Interesting. And you have an interesting profession. You’re a custom clothier. That’s still a thing? Yes, it is. And yes, I am. I have been in the custom clothing business for 27 years. Last year I decided since there hadn’t been a men’s clothing shop on the Marietta Square since 1992, I would give it a shot. I still travel with my custom business to my clients, but I also offer custom clothing by appointment in my shop. And the shop is doing well, yes? Yes, I have been fortunate. The shop has been met with a great deal of support. I knew the need was there, and I have been pleasantly surprised to see how many folks are happy to have a locally owned clothing source that caters exclusively to men. We offer everything from upscale suits to pajamas. From college game day to the board room, we believe style is something that you own, and it needs to be reflected in every setting. A lot of folks around here know you as a musician. Tell us about that. I love music and have a Master’s Degree in Music. Piano is the instrument I studied in college, and it remains my first musical love. I enjoy playing for myself, but occassionally I play with - and for - others. Several of my musician friends have joined me at the Marietta/Cobb Museum of Art for Martinis and Music nights. It’s a fun gig, and we enjoy playing for the community.

Well Suited Meet Boozer McClure. Yes, Boozer. He is a staple in the community and is bringing uptown style to downtown Marietta with his new shop, Square Threads. So we sat down with this ever-entertaining, sometimes surprising, man about town. We poured a martini, he loosened his tie, and we caught up as he tickled the ivories and told us why everyone should be crazy about a sharp-dressed man.

Any chance you’ll hang up your clothing business and take your act on the road? I play for fun. That’s how I intend to keep it. Recently I have enjoyed learning to play the accordion. Many aspects of it are similar to the piano, but the differences are very interesting and challenging. How do you like your martinis? I am a basic guy when it comes to martinis. Using great vodkas and gins makes for a great martini. If you could tell the modern man one thing about style, what would it be? If I was going to suggest one thing to the man in today’s world about style, it would be to not settle for “just getting by.” Invest in your wardrobe by purchasing classic items that have enduring quality. In a few years you will be glad you have something that still looks and wears well. ★

It’s Wednesday night at Nik’s Back Porch

and Zaib Khan is comfortable. The bar is full of folks sipping on longnecks, watching baseball, laughing with the bartender, but Zaib is the only one in the room with both of his feet propped up on a chair. He stands up and takes a corner of the stage under the soft glow of electric KENO. The band fills in empty seats at a Moog synth, a drum kit, and a keyboard hooked up to a Leslie speaker cabinet. The wall behind them is papered mostly with beer logos from the faces of cardboard six pack carriers, but there’s also a defamed paper mask and a poster of Elvis Presley. Without introduction or conversation, the band breaks into the smoothest cover of Yearning For Your Love. A friend at a nearby table addresses my visible surprise:

“Wait had you never heard this guy before?” “No. First time.” “Good grief, woman. At least you’re here now.”

SOUTHERLY: Downtown Marietta | beSoutherly.com | 31

Zaib and his band carefully curate covers for their live performances, pulling from R&B, funk, and soul artists. You get the sense that you accidentally walked in on a jazz band practicing in a basement, playing the songs they truly love to play. Another round and several songs later they have me forgetting that Lonely Avenue is a Ray Charles classic. It sounds original. They’re that good. Apparent musicianship aside, there’s something specific about Zaib. His voice sounds easy. His delivery is too pure. He’s soulful, but not pained. From what I’ve heard, Zaib’s a local family man. Encouraged by positive response, he walked away from college to find his career in music. He says: “I would get good feedback, so I kept going. In a way, music had to happen because there was nothing else I wanted to do. When I was younger, I had no idea I’d be singing songs to pay the bills.” Now he makes a living playing out around the South, from smoky bars in the Carolina foothills to swanky parties in Atlanta, and back home again. Recently he and Rhett Huffman (keys, synth, bass) played the Forever Young Ball. Atlanta’s Mayor Kasim Reed thanked Zaib publicly, saying “Thank you for a terrific live performance.” Of his bandmates he says, “I feel so lucky to be around such great musicians. Each is the real deal, a pro’s pro for sure.” As a songwriter he’s just starting to come into his own. Earlier this year he released a selftitled EP Zaib Khan. His personal, earnest, and unapologetically simple form of storytelling carries us through six original songs that pivot between gospel, jazz, and country conventions. His strongest single The Wind is also the most vulnerable:

His voice sounds easy. His delivery is too pure. He’s soulful, but not pained.

I sing songs, every Saturday, down at the Old Vinings Inn And people sing along to songs they know But then they turn their heads when it’s one I wrote That’s okay cause they don’t know Maybe one of these days they’ll hear what I wrote This I hope Back at Nik’s place, posted up at a hightop with a half-empty Terrapin, I have the sincere pleasure of shaking Zaib’s hand after a set. It’s too loud for formal salutations, so he hands me a business card. I turn it over in my palm. It reads the most ubiquitous mantra of optimists: Do. What. You. Love. “Do what you love?” I hurl my cynical voice at Zaib over the noise of the crowd. “Ya know, some people might say that’s a privilege.” “I don’t know,” he smiles back. “It’s working for me.” And he’s right. Whatever he’s doing, it is working, and we can’t wait to see what he decides to do next.

HOUSE of

photography by Mia McCorkle

The culinary scene in downtown Marietta is a hot spot for die-hard foodies. One of the area’s longest tenured restaurants, House of Lu, has been the go-to Chinese restaurant for over 17 years. Focusing on taste and quality, the family-owned business has cultivated a steady, loyal following. Earlier this year, the restaurant unveiled a new look and new menu offerings, proving they truly are taste-makers.

SOUTHERLY: Downtown Marietta | beSoutherly.com | 35

Top left: An inset tea display showing family heirlooms. Right: One of two murals flanking the dining room walls. Bottom left: Pho, shot on red quartz countertop.

Local interior designer and regular patron Cassandra Buckalew, of Cassandra Buckalew Interiors, began conversations with the owners of House of Lu about creating a new look for the restaurant, a contemporary interpretation that also acknowledged the Lu family’s Chinese and Vietnamese heritage. The family had long wanted to introduce the Vietnamese cuisine to their menu and desired the interior to reflect both cultures. Working to avoid typical Eastern Asian décor previously seen in the space, the goal was to introduce both cultures in a modern, impactful, and memorable way. The overarching design concept was for the restaurant to have simple shapes and strong geometry with a modern nod to both cultures. The exterior was refaced with modern awnings and a bright red laquered set of doors with custom brass hardware. Inside, dark grey walls were chosen as a grounding, peaceful backdrop amidst bold colors. A reimagined circular bar with an ultra-glossy, red quartz counter creates a welcoming hub in the center of the main room. Large basket pendants bring a natural touch to an otherwise sleek space. With the addition of updated lighting and posh seating, the interior had been transformed. But perhaps the greatest impact was to come from the art installations. Enter local artist, Marc Noreikas. With a strong graffiti style, the artist’s work seemed the perfect way to create the unexpected in an Asian restaurant. Armed only with paint, brushes, and ideas from collaboration with Buckalew and the Lu family, Noreikas delivered two fantastical scenes, each an impressive 34 feet wide. The larger-

than-life murals are the undisputed focal points of the dining room. Vivid reds, blues, yellows, and greens now fill the once lackluster space with a bold, undeniable energy. The mural on the North wall shows a woman soaring with a dragon in her hair, representing the family’s Chinese heritage. On the South wall we look out from under a woman’s umbrella to find boats floating in Halong Bay, representing their Vietnamese heritage. Each is powerful, yet does not overpower the other. With House of Lu’s multi-Asian heritage reflected in both the exterior and interior spaces, the family introduced Vietnamese dishes to their menu, most notably Bahn Mi (a Vietnamese sandwich that consists of a French baguette served with pâté, mayonnaise, and fillings of cilantro, a wedge of fresh cucumber for crunch, pickled carrots, pickled daikon, jalepenos, and meats) and Pho (a Vietnamese noodle soup consisting of a fragrant slow cooked beef broth, linguine-shaped rice noodles, various herbs, and meat). Each of the new menu items has received rave reviews, including those of Food Network star and Marietta resident Alton Brown. Says the Lu family, “With almost three decades of experience in the restaurant business, we proudly preserve our passion for food with our family’s recipes.” Now, the setting complements the heritage. So belly up to that fabulous bar, order yourself a cocktail, and let the Lu family welcome you to their House, their home. ★

Bloom

Everything’s coming up roses - and rananculus and peonies - for Ashley Woodson Bailey. by Amber Byrd

W

When art comes alive it’s a beautiful thing. A near fatal car accident changed Ashley Woodson Bailey forever. From a tangled mess of metal, a broken back, and broken ribs, a woman unbroken - was born. This is her story.

44 | SOUTHERLY: Downtown Marietta | beSoutherly.com

The floral photography, or “florography” of the Marietta resident was born from a second chance at life. After sustaining life-altering injuries in a horrific crash, Bailey began to see things in a new light. Earning a BFA in Art History and Art from the University of Texas in Austin, Bailey worked as a floral designer for two decades in Dallas, Houston, NYC, Savannah, Atlanta and Austin. A veteran of the event-design world, Bailey served as the Director of Events at the Savannah School of Art and Design. She spent days installing breathtaking floral arrangements and was known to climb 40-foot scaffolding to make sure an installation was perfect. Doctors told her that she would likely never be physically able to create the floral designs for large-scale events as she once did – a sweet irony to the many flowers surrounding her in her recovery room. Facing her new reality, Bailey endured nearly seven months of recovery. Unable to focus on much more than her healing, Bailey began taking photographs of the bouquets that surrounded her with her iPhone. Bedridden and confined within a back brace, the life cycle of a single flower caught her attention. It seemed to parallel her life. Indeed, her collection “Dark” is inspired by the transition of the flower from a lovely blossom to a dying stem and the deep desire to preserve the metamorphosis as a moment in time. Bailey calls her works “everlasting bouquets,” and they express her desire to preserve the beauty she sees. “For me the flowers are winking at

me, guiding me, letting me know that all is well in the world,” Bailey says. Now recovered, yet burdened with chronic pain, Bailey shares her artwork with the world in hopes of bringing an awareness to the beauty of life and growth. “Every stem has a story. Just like all of us,” Bailey points out. She finds beauty in all blooms, but is particularly fond of peonies, scabiosa, ranunculus and flowers native to the South. Known to shoot as many as 200 photographs of a single stem, Bailey captures the blooms as they wilt and die. Perhaps it’s that exploration that yields a haunting, ethereal quality to her work. A self-taught photographer, Bailey sought to create a lasting flower arrangement through the lens of a camera. Her love for all things floral shows in her photography. The dreamy florals echo Bailey’s gratitude and new outlook on life. Bailey arranges each composition with a loose, fresh-fromthe-garden feel. Preferring to shoot in the natural light of her own backyard, Bailey focuses on the smallest of details.

For me the flowers are winking at me, guiding me, letting me know that all is well in the world.

Her photography pays homage to the beauty within us and that surrounds us in all stages of life. Inspiration comes from everywhere. Her passion for fashion influenced one of her most striking images, Couture. “For all my life I have loved fashion, like haute couture,” states Bailey. “The beauty of a handmade garment is breathtaking. As I took this photo I saw a beautiful French model spinning in a couture gown.” Each evocative image is meticulously edited through a series of filters and layers to achieve a soft, smoky quality. Attributing the soft quality of each image to her editing process, Bailey manages to create a painterly feel to her work. Each piece is printed in Los Angeles on Hahnemuhle, a high quality cotton rag paper that provides a luxurious texture for her soft and moody artwork. The image is then returned to Bailey who inspects the photograph before she signs, seals, and delivers the piece to its newest collector. Collectors from all across the world have taken notice and are following the creative journey of this once budding, turned blooming artist. Bailey’s work has been featured by One King’s Lane, Design Sponge, and Garden & Gun. She has also collaborated with Simply Framed and Very Fine South. Interior Designer to the Hollywood elite, Mat Sanders selected a larger than life Bailey floral to be the centerpiece of his design for the bright and airy master bedroom of actress Jessica Alba who wanted a “serene indoor, outdoor oasis.” Like any good artist, Bailey has attracted the interest of other artisans. Copper + Torch has featured her prints in a collection of hand-soldered serving trays. Most recently, she collaborated for a capsule clothing collection with Brooke Atwood, a striking offering featuring her prints. Bailey is also launching a line of AWB Wallpaper this fall, available to the trade. (A sneak peek of the clothing line and wallpaper is shown on her web site, ashleywoodsonbailey.com, and it is breathtaking.) Downtown Marietta is home to Bailey and her flowers. Co-founder of 200 Mill, a working studio that hosts “pop-up shops” each month featuring local makers and artists, Bailey is collaborating with fellow creatives, putting roots down and sowing her artful oats. But don’t count on this girl to stay in one place. She has taught her Florography classes in New York and Australia, and she has no plans of stopping any time soon. Perhaps this statement from Bailey best personifies her journey: “Don’t give up - ever. It will come. And don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your art. It is art. It is yours. It is beautiful.” It seems her brand, like her spirit, continues to blossom in new and beautiful ways. And we can’t wait to see what Bailey has in store next. ★

THE WORD

According to Southerly

FIREFLY When the little lights on little wing, go quietly into their nightly dance, aglow, globes of amber-emerald flame bouncing upon their backs, so too do the children emerge from the safety and seclusion of Man’s borrowed fires and return, within the spirit, to the light of the mother, and source of all beginnings, and take to a dance all their own, embracing the amethyst night as a place of mystery and the mystic, with strangely beautiful gifts, and stories of magic and wonder, where with a jar of glass and a quick wrist, the flames of those little candles, will give rise to sparks of curiosity in all wide and smiling eyes, and as we are led out into the darkness after them, we will learn to dance beneath their lighting of our way. - by Justin White -
