embers of The Plains Lions Club embrace the organizationâs community service mission, just like any of the clubâs more than 48,000 chapters around the world. The Lionâs Club helpsâŻseniors, youth groups, hospitalsâŻand clinics, as well as other segments of the population that might otherwise be unchecked or underfunded. And like so many other organizations worldwide,âŻthe COVID-19 pandemic forcedâŻit to cancel events and become almost dormant since MarchâŻ2020. But this chapter and its roughlyâŻ27 membersâŻare motivated with a newâŻwayâŻtoâŻserve the community without gathering in large groups:âŻby helping the community turn its old plastic bags into something useful for everyone: park benches.âŻâŻâŻ Bill Snider, The Plains Lions Club co-membership chair, collects the bags in this bin outside his business, All American Trophies and Sport.

The group is working with a business named Trex, which uses plastics to make decking materials. The plastics receptacles are placed in two area businesses:âŻMacâs Work Wear on EastâŻState StreetâŻin Athens,âŻandâŻAll AmericanâŻTrophiesâŻand SportsâŻon NorthâŻPlains RoadâŻin The Plains. The collectionâŻacceptsâŻany clean plasticâŻincludingâŻfilm,âŻproduce and storeâŻbags, Ziploc/reusable bags and bubbleâŻwrap.âŻWhen Trex can collect 500 pounds of plastic,âŻit will donate to the group a public bench made of the synthetic material.âŻâŻ The clubâs MembershipâŻChairâŻBill OmenâŻsays heâs confident the collection will glean results, which they plan to install inâŻThe Plains Community Park.âŻâŻâŻ âWe should probably get at least one, but 500 pounds is a lot of plastic bags. We are just glad to not have the plastic in our landfills, where it would probably stay forever,â Omen says.âŻâŻâŻ OmenâŻbelievesâŻhe has collectedâŻ4âŻor 5âŻpounds already just from friends andâŻneighbors,âŻand in February, Macâs Work Wear⯠had accumulated enough⯠plastic⯠for two benches.âŻâŻâŻâŻ âThis program has seemed to be quite successful and has brought quite a bit of attention to the club. There is a lot of talk about us continuing the project after the May date,ââŻsaysâŻBill Snider,âŻThe Plains Lions ClubâŻco-membershipâŻchair, and owner of All American Trophies.âŻâŻ TrexâŻstarted to provideâŻitsâŻplastic collection project to American communities inâŻ2006. After collecting the plastic,âŻthe companyâŻshreds, meltsâŻand mixesâŻthe plasticâŻwith saw dust to create the polymer planks. TrexâŻprovides this service to any group willing to sign up for the program, which requires aâŻsix-monthâŻcollection period and a monthly report.âŻTrexâŻreports that 500 pounds is about 40,500 plastic bags and film. The company provides two recycling bags, postersâŻand benches for anyone who can complete the challenge.âŻAs of now there are over 2,000 different groups that are participating in the project.⯠The Lions Club first announced the recycling project on itsâŻFacebook page in January andâŻhope toâŻcontinue the collectionâŻuntil May 15, 2021.âŻOther nearby chapters are also in the program, includingâŻAthens, Alexander, Chauncey, Dover,âŻPomeroy/MiddleportâŻand the Alexander Leos, the Lions club for people underâŻ21 years old.âŻâŻ Nancy ClarkâŻof the Athens Lions Club is responsibleâŻforâŻsetting up this project for each of the Lions Clubs in the area. âWe canâŻactually signâŻup again and have another six months so if we want to get two benches we can,â Clark says. âItâs really popular, and people are trying to get us to do it all the time.â
