EDITOR’S LETTER

Unsung Heroes

T

his month we feature some outstanding organizations that raise money for Derby’s unsung heroes. Jocktails, benefits the Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Fund, providing financial assistance to over 60 former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Ferdinand’s Ball is another event I cherish for its commitment to providing a quality life for the many horses who do not find their way into the history books by way of Old Friends Retirement Farm. I would be greatly remiss if I didn’t thank my unsung heroes of Derby – the photographers that work round the clock to help us preserve every memory and make this issue so stunningly pictorial. These professionals work multiple events daily sometimes hauling heavy equipment on the track for hours at a time in an effort to capture an iconic image or to help us relive the energy and beauty of the day. This publication would be

nothing without them year round, but this time of year, in particular, I must express my sincere gratitude. Please go to nfocuslouisville. com to reap the rewards of their hard work and view the hundreds of photos that are not contained within these pages. In our feature story, Natalie Officer shares that she and her business partner, Britney Groneck are often called onto the design scene during times of challenging transition for clients. Similarly, in our Corporate Spotlight, Lenihan Sotheby’s realtor Terri Bass says that she often plays matchmaker with clients, introducing them to nonprofits in which they may wish to get involved, connecting them with their city as well as a home. While our Derby coverage and Homes of Distinction spread may look glamorous, take the time to thank the unsung heroes working diligently behind the scenes to make it appear so.

joyous buzz resonated off the new and exclusive venue, The Mansion, as the sun set over Churchill Downs’ stoic Twin Spires. Community influencers sipped bubbly, enjoyed a cigar bar, and talked Derby on the eve of Opening Night at the track. The Kentucky Derby Museum Gala gathers an elite crowd; you can feel it from the moment you hit the red carpet. There is just something about this particular event that has always been different...special. From politicians to socialites, guests mingled over talks of bets, millenaries, and of course, the establishment of the hour - the Kentucky Derby Museum. This year, the Museum has grown leaps and bounds as it installed one of the world’s only 360 degree, 4K theaters to bring guests a surreal racing experience. In addition, the museum’s outreach expanded and they were able to reach students in each of Kentucky’s 120 counties with traveling educational programs developed around the equine industry. With such admirable accomplishments, each guest of the gala left more proud of the Museum than before they arrived. The Mansion proved to be the most perfect venue selection for cocktails as it made its grand debut for many attendees. Guests of the gala only added to the space’s sophistication with gorgeous designer gowns and tuxedos. This level of elevation has been sustained for 30 years and Louisville has grown to call the Museum Gala one of its most highly esteemed Derby galas. Off the terrace, guests savored hor d’oeuvres and captured the perfect glamour shot high above the sun drenched racetrack. After the cocktail hour came to a close, trolleys escorted guests to the Museum. There, many guests enjoyed light music and socializing before retiring to the Garden Terrace. Black, white and gold decor enchanted gala goers as each table showcased a gorgeous red rose arrangement by Millennium Events. A tasty meal satisfied attendees before promises of “The Great Race” showing enticed them into The Great Hall. After an emotional cinematic experience, The Downtown Band from Nashville enlivened the night. Guests danced the night away all thanks to event sponsors, Churchill Downs, Brown-Forman, Morgan Stanley, Papercone Corporation, Rostrevor Foundation, and LG&E. Congratulations to Gala Chair Rhonda Jo Conner on enlivening this beloved 30 year tradition.

Awards in the Arts An Opening Night to Remember

O

pening Night at Churchill Downs has always been a tradition in welcoming Derby season for racing enthusiasts. But this year, thanks to the inaugural Awards in the Arts, it became a not-to-be-missed evening for Art enthusiasts as well. Churchill Downs became a stage and all of the spectators were actors as flash mobs and impromptu performances delighted and surprised the crowd at every turn, curated by Mo McKnight Howe. And if you were lucky enough to score a ticket to the sold out VIP dinner in the newly renovated Stakes Room, then you had a front row seat to a show starring a veritable Who’s Who of Louisville’s top philanthropists and arts patrons. This event was thanks to a massively successful collaboration between Churchill Downs, Fund for the Arts and the Jennifer Lawrence Foundation as a way to celebrate the talent and passion of our local arts community. Guests were even treated to a greeting by Louisville’s own two-time Academy Award-winning thespian Jennifer Lawrence who said, “I truly appreciate all the hard work that has gone into making this night possible. Your support of my foundation and the Jennifer Lawrence Arts fund is incredible. I’m sorry I can’t be there with you. I hope you have a great time!” After thanking generous sponsors like Delta Dental, Old Forester, Rodeo Drive and Joy Mangano, she shared a private happy birthday message with her brother. Those honored for the evening, having been chosen by a selection committee of artists, arts administrators and volunteer leaders in the arts, from a pool of 120 nominations included The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, StageOne Family Theatre, Teddy Abrams and Jecorey ‘1200’ Arthur. Sculptor Ed Hamilton was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award and nationally acclaimed dancer and Louisville-native Wendy Whelan was bestowed a National Award in the Arts. Fund for the Arts President and CEO, Christen Boone, shared, “The breadth and diversity of Louisville’s arts community makes it the energetic, creative and livable city that it is.” Thanks to that energy and creativity, this event is sure to only expand from its already banner maiden year.

Celebrity Day at the Downs

L

ong before the words Thursday and Derby were combined to come up with a new excuse to take a day off from work, Kentucky Derby Festival insiders spent the day on the sixth floor of Churchill Downs feasting, betting, and in the days before cell phone photos, even getting celebrity autographs. Now “Thurby” and “selfie” are part of our lexicon and have both added to this time honored tradition in a way that makes every guest feel like a star. This glamorous day at the races is a hot ticket and one that sells out quickly each year. But, if you miss your chance to see the celebrities at the track on Thursday, you can always grab a seat on Broadway that afternoon for a wave as they make their way down in the Republic Bank Pegasus Parade. This year, Kentucky’s own Jordan Smith, winner of season 9 of “The Voice”, was a guest before serving as Grand Marshal of the parade, joined by Honorary Grand Marshals, Damion Lee and Trey Lewis, beloved seniors of the University of Louisville Men’s Basketball Team. Other celebrity guests who graciously posed for photos with guests while singing the praises of Kentucky traditions and hospitality were: Actor Will Chase of ABC’s “Nashville,” Adriana Madix, Tom Sandoval, Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor of Bravo TV’s “Vanderpump Rules,” Monte Durham of TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress: ATL,” Ray J and Princess Love from VH1’s “Love and Hip Hop: Hollywood,” Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell, Miss Kentucky 2015 Clark Davis, and TV personality and Derby veteran Star Jones. Presented by Kentuckiana Honda Dealers (who presented a $1000 check to Kosair Children’s Hospital), Celebrity Day at the Downs is just one of 70 KDF community events held each year in celebration of the Kentucky Derby. This year, the third race of the day on Thurby was named for the Derby Festival with 2016 KDF Chairman Wes Rutledge and the Derby Festival Queen and Royal Court presentinga 14-inch engraved silver tray to the winning jockey, trainer and owner.

Ferdinand’s Ball Helping Legacies Live On

T

his year’s #partyfortheponies saw a change of venue, but for the same incredibly worthy and relevant cause. Horse racing fans capped off their Thurby experience at The Louisville Marriott Downtown in support of Old Friends Farm in Georgetown, Kentucky, a retirement home for race horses and currently home to the 1997 Derby winner Silver Charm. Founders of Ferdinand’s Ball, sisters Kim Boyle and Aimee Wulfeck, kicked off the evening with a beautiful toast to the stars of the most exciting two minutes in sports by reminding the crowd: “On Saturday, one horse will have beaten the odds to earn the garland of roses. One horse out of the 21,275 thoroughbreds born three years ago will be crowned the winner of the Kentucky Derby. But what happens after the flashbulbs fade and the lights dim? What happens to the claimers that never quite achieve greatness but run their hearts out anyway?” As avid animal lovers and fans of the sport, the sisters believe it is all of our duty to give these magnificent animals the chance they deserve to retire in style and dignity. The mission of Old Friends Farm was established in 2003 when the 1986 winner of the Kentucky Derby, Ferdinand, was sent to slaughter. Thus the creation of Old Friends by Boston Globe film critic Michael Blowen and the naming of Ferdinand’s Ball by Kim and Aimee in his honor. Now in its 7th year, the event has become a much anticipated staple for celebrated jockeys, celebrities and racing enthusiasts. Following a delicious Kentucky Proud dinner and live auction, the ballroom walls rolled away to invite inside the party ticket holders as Tony & The Tan Lines took the stage to serenade the dancing crowd into Oaks morning when brunches awaited. Many went to the track the following day armed with their parting gift of peppermints for the ponies, knowing that while Louisville may be able to turn a two-minute race into a two-week party and fashion extravaganza, in the end, it’s all about the horses.

B

oys & Girls Haven have introduced an incredibly popular Oaks tradition over the past four years – one that adds a little bit of sparkle to all that pink. The reigning Miss America now packs up her crown and adds Derby weekend to her chockfull itinerary and Boys & Girls Haven in Louisville, Kentucky becomes her cause. This year’s breakfast, emceed by Angie Fenton was held at The Olmsted and awarded three Haven’s Heroes awards to organizations and individuals in the community who have made worthy efforts on behalf of struggling youth. This year’s recipients who have gone above and beyond to give a home and a future to neglected and abused young people were Kosair Charities, The Horton Fruit Company and longtime mentor John Leist. Kosair Charities funded a medical care program which allows kids to receive a medical evaluation when they arrive at Boys & Girls Haven. Their award was accepted by Board Chair Jerry Ward. The Horton family has a longstanding history with Boys & Girls Haven having given their support to the organization since its founding in 1950. Their weekly donation of fruit in addition to their financial contributions have improved the lives of these children. Vice President Bill Benoit proudly accepted the award on their behalf. John Leist has personally mentored five youth over the past eight years and has facilitated tours and activities for them at Zoeller Company where he has worked for over 35 years. Miss America, Betty Cantrell proved that she is far more than a beauty queen as the former Miss Georgia discussed her personal platform of “Healthy Children, Strong America.” She later tweeted, “The #OaksBreakfast was a success! Now time to get changed into my pink dress and fascinator for the #OaksDay pink carpet!” before heading to the track in a Joseph Ribkoff ensemble provided by local boutique The Willow Tree. Yes, Oaks Day has come to represent an array of important causes, both at the track and beyond. Next year, when making your itinerary, remember you can start your charitable day by supporting children in need.

Oaks Brunch pARTnership Board Fundraiser is a Work of Art

L

et’s face it, the only thing we could possibly find to complain about during a day as glorious as Oaks 142, was having to wade through the logistics of track traffic and parking. But, the Speed Museum pARTnership Board, in their inaugural year planning the Oaks Brunch to benefit the newly reopened state-of-the-art museum, decided to remedy that ordeal for their attendees. With thoughtful planning and coordination by event Chair, Julia Carstanjen and Co-Chairs, Karen Casi and Patrick McLane, guests enjoyed stress-free transportation to and from Churchill Downs. One of the many reasons why this maiden event, will quickly become one of the hottest tickets in town for Derby weekend. The brunch, held at the Speed Art Museum itself, was a lovely and ideal way to kick off the festive weekend. The transparent space alone welcomed the day’s perfect sun as a guest of honor, illuminating a scrumptious southern spread by Wiltshire. Bluegrass music provided by Relic added a lively, familiar and quintessentially Kentucky feel to the morning, reminding us that these traditions are ours to uphold, or in this case, reinvent as we choose. Mimosas, Bloody Marys, a premium open bar sponsored by Grey Goose, and an elegant toast provided by Blanc de Bleu, were the perfect reasons to stick around long after the first race had been called at Churchill Downs. If you missed the high value of this event, the energy could certainly be felt from spectators at the track as the planning committee and guests simulcast live into Churchill Downs on the “Big Board” throughout the morning (world’s largest 4K video board). The enthusiasm that has accompanied the reopening of Speed Art Museum is equivalent to the pride and excitement that Louisville feels during Derby weekend. To learn how you can take full advantage of all it has to offer, visit speedmuseum. org, and plan to incorporate Oaks Brunch into your beloved Derby traditions. It is truly an innovative and impeccable experience.

Kentucky Oaks The Victory Lap of 142 Survivors

O

n Oaks we wear pink. It’s not just a style rule, it’s a longstanding tradition every Kentuckian knows well. On this day we wear pink in allegiance to women who have so valorously fought winning and losing battles with breast cancer. As each year goes on, the Survivors Parade grows, adding one more survivor to the track. This year’s march was complete with 142 strong women. Every year the parade evokes a sense of unity--sadness for those lives lost but joy for those who have overcome. This year participants marched to Rachel Platten’s emotionally-charged hit, “Fight Song,” provoking happy and sad tears in the eyes of many. In this single moment, bets were forgotten and all of Churchill Downs rooted for these inspiring women. It is the unifying “My Old Kentucky Home” moment of Oaks day. This year, proceeds were allocated to Bright Pink, which is the only national nonprofit focused on the prevention and early detection of breast and ovarian cancer in young women. I think we can all agree that a fundraiser has never been so chic. Among Oaks traditions, one proves year after year to be most tantalizing for fashion lovers. The Oaks Longine’s fashion contest is legendary and probably because the award is as eye catching as it is valuable. A line of well-dressed attendees gathered outside the pink carpet to get the chance to catwalk for the cameras towards a panel of celebrity judges. This year, those judges spanned from fashion writers to a celebrity chef. After consideration, the judges named Shannon Rajewski of San Francisco the winner and presented her with the prize of an elegant Longines timepiece from the DolceVita collection. If you find yourself jealous of Shannon, you’re certainly not alone. Lucky for you, there’s always next year and much like racing, you’ll never win if you don’t bet.

Unbridled Eve Gala Southern Charm and Elegance at its Best

B

y name, Unbridled Eve may be in only its fifth year, but founding sisters Tammy York Day and Tonya York Dees have a reputation for throwing one of Louisville’s most well-oiled and successful Derby eve parties that is practically legendary. With a committed, hard-working and enthusiastic committee that assures a flawless evening, they have quickly established Unbridled Eve as a brand that commands national attention, all for the benefit of a multitude of worthy causes. This year’s black-tie optional soiree at the Galt House Hotel and Suites was full of the Southern grace, glamour, charm and hospitality that we have come to expect from the party with star power that packed an enormous punch. The musical entertainment alone was worth the ticket price with Grammy-nominated singers like Robin Thicke and Wynonna Judd taking the stage to entertain the crowd. Joined by John Elfante ( former lead singer of the band Kansas) and Dennis DeYoung ( former lead singer of the band Styx), guests were filling the dance floor to catch a glimpse and to bust a move. Unbridled Eve has long had an unparalleled reputation through the years of creating an atmosphere where celebrity guests and gala attendees mingle, dine and dance side by side affording maximum interaction with the experience. This year, those stars included Oscar-winning actress Mira Sorvino, Miss America Betty Cantrell and Dean Norris of “Breaking Bad,” along with professional athletes past and present such as Junior Bridgeman, Mark Sanchez and Von Miller. This is also the kind of party that turns you into the star with Live Band Karaoke, Photo Booth Live and, quite honestly, entertainment around every corner. While this ultimate party with a purpose does help numerous causes, perhaps most notably, is five-year beneficiary, Blessings in a Backpack, an organization that fights childhood hunger providing needy elementary school students a backpack of food on the weekends. And that, is southern hospitality at its finest, proving that no stars shine brighter at Derby season than those who are helping others.

Kentucky Derby 142nd Renewal of the Greatest Two Minutes in Sports

T

radition. Celebrity. Fashion. No matter how hard we try to summarize and describe the first Saturday in May, the words never quite live up to the magic of the atmosphere. Iconic is probably the word that comes closest. Still elevated from the high of one of the greatest years in racing history, American Pharoah did what many said would never be done again, capturing the Triple Crown, and America’s heart. While the attention was absolutely on which horse had the potential to deliver a back-to-back Triple Crown, this is, after all, the Kentucky Derby, and the distractions to the actual races are many. Beginning with the enthusiastic neck strained crowds aligning the red carpet, hoping to catch a glimpse of Richie Sambora, Gayle King or Ingrid Michaelson. If you were lucky, and the timing was right, perhaps you witnessed one of the highlights of this year’s red carpet, when country music recording artist J.D. Shelburne dropped to one knee to propose to longtime love Amy Whitham on live television. From fully loaded brimmed hats, to delicate fascinators, this year’s most notable headwear trended toward vertical, architectural and one-of-a-kind creations. Perhaps the best accessories of the day were proudly displayed by Churchill Downs itself, boasting newly renovated spaces like The Stakes Room and The Turf Club. As Lady Antebellum struck their perfect harmonies while singing The National Anthem, the skies opened up and presented the packed crowd with a heavy, albeit quick, downpour. Some ran for cover, some stood their ground stoically, others still, didn’t even seem to notice. Hats may have wilted but spirits did not as the sun appeared just in time to spotlight Nyquist win the 142nd garland of roses. While we know by now that he will not go down in American history as a Triple Crown winner, he is forever a part of Kentucky history, his name inscribed aside all the ones we’ve loved before. As the jubilant crowd walked back toward their car, cab, golf cart, rickshaw – whatever mode of transportation had been most conveniently cobbled together to maximize the celebration, many stumbled upon impromptu front yard barbecue dance parties that perfectly demonstrate the indiscriminate hospitality of the Kentucky Derby. With hats, shoes and sometimes friends in hand, it was as though you could almost hear a simultaneous declaration of, “I love Louisville.”

Address: Artisan Signature Home, Home of Jason and Gretchen Black in Norton Commons Contact: Jason Black (502-551-3004), Artisan Signature Homes

Artisan Signature Homes Jason Black was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, and from St. X to Bellarmine, let his roots grow deep, knowing he wanted to always call the Derby City his home. What he didn’t know, until a bit later in life, was that home building would become his passion and profession, walking away from a successful corporate career to pursue it. “Growing up, I had an affinity for walking through newly constructed homes. I was fascinated by them long before I knew I would turn out building them,” he recalls. Jason wisely took the time to meticulously learn every detail of the industry, shadowing mentors and focusing on one or two homes a year so he could learn how to become a custom home builder. In 2005, Jason’s “coming out” party was in the form of a featured home in Homarama, and he says he never looked back. Jason and his wife, Gretchen, share a passion for the South, visiting Charleston often for inspirations to incorporate into their homes - either the ones Jason custom builds through his company, Artisan Signature Homes, or the ones they design, build and live in together as a family with their three sons. So, when the opportunity arose for Jason to partner with the Southern Living Custom Builder Program, of which he is now a board member, it was a perfect fit. With a motto of “Modern Finishes with Southern Charm,” Jason says, “As part of our ties to Southern Living, we have access to the newest, most current plans.” While Jason says the idea of building a home may overwhelm some clients, he encourages them to embrace the opportunity to build their dream home and enjoy the process that he strives to make as seamless as possible: “Building a house is a bit like childbirth. Sure, there is a certain amount of pain involved, but the end result is always worth it.” Jason’s work through Artisan Signature Homes is noted for the intricate mill and trim work as well as incorporating the current trend of shiplap walls. He explains, “I’ve been using shiplap in my houses for probably six years now. It adds the element of a farmhouse or rustic feel.” Jason is also a stickler for architectural details and proportions, many times rebuilding something that he feels doesn’t look right or removing an element to redo. “I’m not afraid to start over if something isn’t right,” he says, “I stand behind my work because I really care about what I do.” When his wife Gretchen isn’t working on her Norton Commons boutique, LuluBelles, the couple still like to collaborate on homes, experimenting on new tiles and flooring for spec homes. The family’s newest home in Norton Commons, a neighborhood in which Jason has designed and built over a hundred homes, overlooks the amphitheater so that they could engage fully with the community. “I wasn’t one of the original builders of Norton Commons, but became engaged with this neighborhood early on. It has been fun to see the original vision come to life.” The Blacks are working to expand the brand of Artisan Signature Homes through podcasts, a blog for WLKY and a strong social media presence. 5224 Avish Lane This stunning 24-acre property was originally developed by Owsley and Laura Lyons Brown in 1910, and was more recently owned by their grandson and Louisville’s beloved philanthropist Owsley Brown Frazier. It is a rare opportunity to own one of Louisville’s most iconic homes. The Avish, a name derived from the Gaelic translation of “Rocky Hill,” is named for the family’s ancestral home in Ireland and features a formal garden, water features and guest quarters befitting a king and queen. Nestled among 10 acres and overlooking the Ohio River, the remarkable estate is listed on The National Register of Historic Places. Boasting 18,000 finished square feet, it contains two master suits, four additional bedrooms, nine full baths and two half baths. The grand entrance of the home is flanked by a reception area, dining hall and a formal parlor with an adjoining conservatory. The main kitchen as well as a catering kitchen are located on the main level along with an owner’s office suite. Private living quarters can be accessed on the second level by way of one of three stair cases, a service elevator or a passenger elevator. The third floor holds a private suite that is ideal for a mother-in-law suite, an au pair or live-in caretaker. A dazzling arbor, formal garden, garden house, greenhouses, walkways, barn and guest quarters punctuate these impressive grounds. An indoor pool and solarium complete with private his and hers bathrooms with dressing areas are among the many luxury amenities. An entertainment area, laundry facilities and a garage can also be found on the lower level. A chance to own a part of Louisville history. Photos by Kory Johnson Photography

Situated on nearly three bucolic acres in one of the most convenient locations in town, this gorgeous home is perfect for entertaining. The inviting front porch welcomes guests to a wide entry hall, flanked by the formal dining room and study with fireplace. On the opposite wing of the home you’ll find the Tim Winters-designed master suite with walk-in closet, recently updated bathroom, and French doors to the expansive backyard. Two additional bedrooms and two fabulous bathrooms complete this level. During the most recent renovation, the current owners seamlessly added a second story above the garage, which created two additional bedrooms and a full bathroom -perfect for teenagers, guests or in-laws. A newly excavated basement with family room and exercise area round out the expansions. A full attic and cellar make for storage ease. Outside, you’ll find a grassy, flat front yard, extensive and recently added landscaping, and a rear terrace that is a wonderful spot for dining and entertaining al fresco. atalie Officer brings an effortless cool to everything from her personal style to her historic fully renovated farm house in Anchorage, named Maplecrest. When I say, “cool,” I don’t mean aloof. This is not of the you-can’t-sit-with-us variety found in high school cafeterias. Quite the opposite, actually. Natalie has an extreme warmth that envelopes everyone she meets. Yet, she has a taste level that is “sui generis” and distinct – a fashion sense that fully accommodates the wearing of pants to a black tie gala or that can mismatch accessories until they are, in fact, perfectly matched. It is a winning wager that her look will never be repeated in a crowded room – emulated at a later date, maybe. It is an authentic style that informs her sensibility as a selftaught interior designer; and now that she welcomes her newest design partner, architect Britney Groneck, into the fold, it is evident that Natalie O. Design is quickly becoming a stand-apart brand all its own. Britney brings the same level of modern and informed ease to both a design project and the energy of a room. The two met over four years ago when they were both members of GLOW (Greater Louisville Outstanding Women) later engaging over coffee and connecting on a personal and professional level. Even at that time, they knew that they wanted to work together, but finding the right time would be crucial. Poignantly, this past year, their partnership formed after they each had given birth. Natalie jests that they now have a tribe of six kids between them – three each. If you think that number, or the welcoming of a newborn slowed them down in any way, brace yourself. Besides their newly formed partnership, Natalie hosted a fundraiser for Hope Scarves in her home a mere week after the birth of her youngest, Emma June. Natalie and Britney also forged a friendship and working relationship together over their mutual commitment to philanthropy. In 2013, when Natalie chaired the Pink Tie Ball, Britney was on her design committee; or, as Natalie more aptly describes, “Britney was my design committee.” Both have a deep connection to breast cancer charities as Britney’s mother is a survivor, and Natalie lost both grandmothers to breast cancer. Natalie shares with her can-

did humor, “I had a friend who took a good-natured jab at me one night after cocktails saying, ‘Don’t get her started. She has a soft spot in her heart for breast cancer.’ Yes, in fact, I do. Some people call it the ‘pretty cancer,’ but, there is nothing pretty about any cancer.” Natalie went on to join the board of Hope Scarves, for which she and her husband, Reise, throw the aforementioned tented, bluegrass, back yard barbecuestyle fundraiser at their home. She explains, “Reise and I always wanted a home that would be a community venue more than just a house for us. When I joined Hope Scarves, I instantly knew that was a way in which I could contribute.” Hope Scarves is a locally-operated, yet nationally-recognized nonprofit gaining unprecedented momentum for their mission to share scarves, stories and hope with women facing cancer. Founder Lara McGregor shares of working with Natalie: “Natalie’s involvement in Hope Scarves has been a game changer for our organization. Her giving heart is as wide open as they come. Her commitment is genuine and all encompassing. Not only does Natalie host our annual event, Colors of Courage, at her home each year, last year she insisted we would have the event there knowing she would have a newborn baby. She artfully directed table placement and flower arrangements holding her days-old babe in her arms and welcomed guests with her genuine bright smile. I don’t know another person who could pull something like that off.” When it comes to design, Natalie pours her whole heart into her projects in a very similar way. Her professional career took her from her hometown in Indiana to Minneapolis to Chicago, then London before she and her husband set their sights on Louisville as an opportunity and a city that accommodated their family needs. Following her fashion career in apparel merchandising and as an assistant buyer for high end department store Marshal Fields, she worked for Illinois Institute of Art and for designer Sigrid Olsen. It was at that point living in Chicago that she and her husband, Reise, started to “dabble” in doing gut rehab projects together, an endeavor that quickly grew in demand. She recalls, “You don’t really get more of a baptism by fire than that experience. I acted as general contractor, as project manager, as laborer – all of it. It was great for us at a time when real

estate was really hot and then when real estate wasn’t hot, I was having children.” When the family settled in Louisville, Natalie O. Design was formed. Her design company experienced a few major setbacks over the years, though none that were reflected in her work, only felt deeply and painfully in her heart. Most publicly, her friend, trusted employee and treasured team member to the Pink Tie Ball committee that Natalie chaired, Erin Miller, was killed tragically in an automobile collision merely weeks following the successful fundraiser for which she had been a vital contributor. On the untimely death of the 30-year-old confidant, Natalie shares, “She informed my professional work in every way, and I learned something from her every single day. Her passing absolutely took the wind out of my sails.” Three years later, it is now that she finally feels that “wind at her back” through finding the right partner. Britney agrees saying, “We complement and empower each other really well. We both bring a different creative background and perspective to this process.” Britney’s love for architecture manifested itself at a young age. She says, “Growing up, I was constantly drawing as a child. It was all I loved to do. That interest continued to grow as I had wonderful mentors in life and would look to find creative avenues to express myself as I got older. I always knew the art world is where I was meant to be. The details and simplicity of modern design are what I love most and how I can implement them daily into my work.” Britney’s career began in residential design and mixed-use development until she eventually merged to the corporate world of healthcare and commercial design in Louisville. She acknowledges, “I’m thankful for all these experiences because they were beneficial in helping me get back to my roots of residential architecture and design.” Despite the perfectly poetic spaces they design that result in handsome imagery on these pages or their own portfolios, Natalie declares, “We know life is not a magazine or an airbrushed image. We accommodate passionately and beautifully… living in the gritty.” In fact, their goal is to assure that their client’s homes are the best reflection of themselves. “People are affirmed by their own goodness; and, the more of that goodness that they see inside their home, the better job we have done.” She continues that their desire is never for a client to walk in the door and feel

like they have slathered their home in Natalie O. ideas. “We want to collaborate with them and know what makes them feel good. We want as much engagement from them as they are willing and able to give so that we can make it feel like a home to them. A show house with our brand all over it is not our goal.” Two such successful, yet distinctive, collaborations are featured within these pages. The first, Floyds Knobs residents and clients, Julian and Katie King, approached the project in a way in which they completely entrusted Natalie and Britney to help define their environment. They were able to bring a great amount of texture to the home, a trait for which the duo has a strong reputation. The second featured collaboration was with filmmaker Gary Leo Miller of Eye Level Films and his wife, photographer Angela Anderson –Miller. Parents of a young son, Leif, and infant twin daughter, the profoundly creative couple were an intricate part of the design process with a great deal of interaction and feedback. Both fulfilling projects resulted in thoroughly modern yet approachable homes. Of working with Natalie, Britney observes, “I think Natalie is able to connect deeply with clients. That is what it is mainly about for us - making a strong connection with clients and understanding their needs and wants and then figuring out how we can implement that creatively and bring more meaning to their homes and lives. It is about a relationship with the clients we have. I think Natalie’s natural connection with people is why she has done so well in this business.” Natalie articulates that they are often called in during times of transition for clients, saying, “Life can shatter you in positive and negative ways, and very often, we are called in at the intersection of those moments. So, sometimes it’s a birth, a wedding, a career change; or, sometimes it’s a loss or a divorce. All of those lifechanging moments encourage someone to create a new environment, and we are here to help facilitate that need.” Natalie and Britney are ideal for inspiring, hand-holding, or pushing the boundaries to make way for these life changes however delicately or boldly the case may call. Most importantly, they will do it authentically, encouraging you to do the same.

Noosh Nosh Chef Annosh Shariat

enowned local chef Annosh Shariat is back at it, this time opening a new restaurant venue behind longtime favorite Anoosh Bistro at 4816 Brownsboro Center. You might call Noosh Nosh, the more casual quirkier little sister to Anoosh Bistro, except there is nothing little about the Mediterranean and Italian-influenced cuisine offered there since the opening on May 23. In the heart of the open kitchen sits the crown (literally) jewel combination gas and wood stove oven that fires up shareable plates utilizing flavors from around the world. In addition to the eye-catching red-tiled oven, the Adam McIntyre-designed space offers bright accents as colorful as the cuisine. Local bourbon barrel artisan Jason Cohen contributed a hand carved Kentucky walnut wood bar top to the warmth of the room and a vivid green patio will make Noosh Nosh a quick destination for happy hour and al fresco seekers. Shariat, who says the name came from the child of a regular guest of Annosh Bistro who often said he was going to “Noosh’s,” said, “Noosh Nosh is a casual, fun neighborhood place where you will want to visit more than once. It is going to be the kind of restaurant where families can enjoy meals together, friends can

grab a drink and bite and business patrons can catch a quick breakfast or lunch.” Breakfast offerings include baked green eggs and breakfast pizza, sweet and savory crepes (as well as healthy alternatives). An “all-day snacks” menu features house-cured meats and artisanal cheeses, crispy green beans, lobster and shrimp rolls, smoked honey and Sriracha glazed chicken wings and Thai-style chicken skewers. The main menu ranges from flatbreads to salads, sandwiches and pasta all moderately priced between $6 and $18. Of course, a trait in which Shariat is highly regarded is his innovative vegetarian and vegan options, all of which do not disappoint at this establishment. Regardless of your menu choice, save room for the handcrafted gelato or the gelato drinks offered at the full bar. Prior to the opening, a VIP night was held on May 19 benefiting A Recipe to End Hunger, an organization founded by WAVE3 television personality, Dawne Gee. Guests enjoyed a preview of what is sure to become another local favorite, delighting in one of the basic senses that we often take for granted, while contributing to a cause that will afford others in our community the opportunity to do the same. wo years ago, in our Homes of Distinction issue, Nfocus recognized Lenihan Sotheby’s International realtor, Terri Bass, not only for her distinction as the number two real estate agent in Louisville (number one independent agent), but also for the unwavering leadership within organizations like CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Gilda’s Club, Home of the Innocents and Family Scholar House. We checked back in with Terri to find that, as usual, business is thriving, and she is still allocating much of her personal time and resources to helping others in our community. A new focus for Terri, since that time, has been as a founding board member of GFoundation, of which she is currently Board Vice Chair. The mission of the Foundation is to improve the lives of Kentuckians by reducing poverty associated with hunger, homelessness, mental illness and illiteracy. Their focus for 2016 is on senior hunger. Why? The United Health Foundation indicated that Jefferson County had 16,641 food insecure seniors. Terri explains, “The ‘Meals-on-Wheels’ program has limited federal funding which creates a waiting list of homebound seniors in need of food assistance. GFoundation is able to serve all 100 seniors on the waiting list. We contract with GMeals to provide them with fresh, healthy, gourmet meals established from medical guidelines.” Terri and the other founding board members do more than just raise funding for this program, they also volunteer by delivering meals on Mondays. “That time has been a real eye opener,” she continues. “It’s about more than just delivering food, it’s also about taking the time to interact with these seniors.” Rather than host extravagant and costly galas to raise money for

GFoundation, the board opts instead to host small and intimate friend raisers in their homes. Terri and fellow founding board member Madeline Abramson, for example, have paired to host an upcoming dinner in Terri’s home. “The goal,” Terri explains, “is simply to entertain a guest list of people we know and to give them an opportunity to hear what GFoundation is all about. The hope, of course, is that they will turn around and say, ‘How can I help?’” The beautiful home that Terri shares with her husband, Steve Bass, is often the site of fundraisers for the causes to which she is devoted. A slow year, she says, would be five to six dinners throughout the year. They even donate the use of their home in live or silent auctions to charities like Gilda’s Club and will enlist a celebrity chef to prepare a meal in their home and host the highest bidders, an item that often raises a hefty amount of funds for the organization. One such upcoming event Terri and Steve will host soon in their home this summer is for the St. Francis School Capital Campaign. Of her commitment to the school, she shares, “I had a wonderful experience with my children attending St. Francis. It truly allows children to learn in the way in which they need to learn.” The list of Terri’s contributions is seemingly unending. She is still a strong supporter of CASA and is proud of the direction the organization is going and is also on the founding committee for the recent Mosaic Awards, a dinner that recognizes new or firstgeneration immigrants and refugees who are making a significant contribution in their professions and in the community. “It’s really inspiring to see what these individuals have been able to accomplish on their own. The event is in its 15th year and we now sell out every year,” she beams. TONYA ABELN

ove is stronger than death. This is the message Mike Olsen is sharing with the world after being diagnosed with an aggressive and incurable disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Mike has a devastating story similar to many, but he has decided to react in a way that is extraordinary. A year and five months ago, Mike’s doctors broke news that without a double lung transplant he would have two years to live. Instead of curling up in a ball, defeated, Mike decided this was the time to respond to his life’s calling. Mike has since been advocating for Pulmonary Fibrosis awareness through a variety of forms but all under the umbrella “Mike Olsen Project”. The main mode of communication for him is a short documentary he launched on Vimeo three months ago. The documentary follows him through his day, and tells the story of someone suffering through an incurable disease with a vibrant zest for life and love. Mike’s motto is to enjoy life no matter what comes your way. Before being diagnosed with the disease, Mike worked in drapery for over 20 years, first at Spindletop and then at JC Penney as a design consultant for the last two years. He is a pastor at Saint Columba of Iona Community Church and his devoted love for people propels his advocacy. Aside from the documentary, Mike delivers hopeful messages to groups under the name “Love is Stronger Than Death” tour. Mike speaks about his illness but also about the topic of death and dying. From Hosparus, disease support groups, and to his own congregation, Mike is living to make a lasting difference.

“My goal is to leave a legacy of love,” Mike said, “There are people that need to know they are loved. Especially when someone has a disease, they need to know there is someone out there that can be their advocate. I want to have someone look back at my life and say ‘he did all he could.’” Already, Mike is seeing that dream come to fruition right before his own eyes. After reaching out to city officials, Mayor Fischer has proclaimed September the month for Pulmonary Fibrosis awareness and Governor Matt Bevin plans to do the same, only state-wide in coming weeks. Still, Mike encourages everyone to join his fight on a personal level by making the decision to be an organ donor, to donate time as a volunteer, to donate funds, or to simply spread the message about his rare illness. Mike’s hope is that one day, just like the fight against breast cancer, our community can take on the fight against Pulmonary Fibrosis. Pulmonary Fibrosis affects 200,000 people each year and takes the lives of 40,000 people. The disease scars lung tissue until lungs can no longer function. The disease does not target smokers, Mike blames it on poor genes but really he has no idea why he fell ill. There is no cure and Mike wants to motivate people to find one. Until then, he is waiting on the list for a double lung transplant and will continue spreading the message that love is stronger than death. Commonwealth Bank has partnered with Mike Olsen to allocate funds for his medical expenses. You can contribute to this effort at any Commonwealth Bank. AlexA PenCe
