2013 State Short Course Championships Sunday August 18th saw the end of the winter season with the 12 – 18 year olds competing in the Short Course Championships.

The start of the Championships, Open, 11 & Under and Relay Championships, were held in July. A small team of our swimmers competed in the individual events with some great PB’s, Medals and Club Records.

Congratulations to: Rachael Mader: a PB Craig Nicoll: 1 Gold, 2 Silver, 3 Bronze, Finalist in 7 events, a PB & Club Record Tomas Parker: Finalist in 3 events, 3 PBs from 3 swims Jasmine Vidgeon: 3 Bronze, Finalist in 9 events, 8 PBs from 9 swims Alice Whiley: 1 Silver, PB & Club Record The above swimmers along with another 39 swimmers made up 29 teams and attended the Relay Championships.

The Open Girls Freestyle Team, Isabela Kodhyat, Nicole Mader, Rachael Mader, Alice Whiley and the Medley Team, Anasthasia Kodhyat, Nicole Mader, Rachael Mader, Alice Whiley won bronze in both of their events.

For some it was their first competition at the Marion Aquatic Centre and hopefully they will have a go at some meets in the Long Course season.

The final session of the Championships was held on Sunday 18 th August.

The above swimmers wrapped up the Championships placing South Coast in 9 th place overall at the completion of the Championships.

2013 Georgina Hope Swimmers Foundation JX Awards 1st April 2012 – 31st March 2013.

The Australian Junior Excellence Program (JX) recognises rewards and encourages junior swimmers who, through their development of aquatic skills and fitness, achieve a high standard of swimming excellence.

Under the program, swimmers aged from 9 to 13 years, who accomplish times set by Swimming Australia, qualify at Gold, Silver, Bronze or Green standard, depending on their best performance/s during the season.

For doing so, qualifiers receive special recognition by way of: · ·

2013 Winter Season Ending The completion of the third and final Division 1 meet on Saturday 6 th of July marked the end of the 2013 winter short course season for some. Over the past three months swimmers from our Club have competed in SwimmingSA events and Carnivals. Collecting Points at Division 2 meets, Patches at the JX series meets and Medals at Carnivals. Achieving many PBs and Championship Qualifying times along the way.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on their achievements during the season.

2013 Australian Open Water Championships 8th - 10th February 2013 In February a small team, Oscar Deverson , Lachlan Wilson and Alice Whileyheaded off to NSW for the above Championships. This was the first of hopefully many more to come, National event for Oscar & Lachie.

Well done to the boys finishing 1st & 2nd SA swimmers, respectively, 11th & 12th overall in the JX 2.5k swim. Alice competed in the Female Open 10k swim, finishing 2nd SA swimmer and 8th (6th Australian) overall.

A great effort by all swimmers. Well done and congratulations.

2013 State Open Water Championships The championships were held Sunday 4th November at West Lakes. The weather was great for the event but the water was still cold. Our team of 12 swimmers, a few new to open water swimming, took to the water in various events placing South Coast 3rd overall. Well done team!

In the 2.5km event we saw Sharon Beaver, Courtney Bristow, Oscar Deverson, Sydney McCurrach, Shonie Nurmi, Josh Whitehead, Lachlan Wilson, Bronwyn Wolfaardt, Damian Wolfaardt compete with some awesome results with a few of our boys in the first break away pack.

In the 5km event we saw Rebecca Rogers & Madison Wheeler compete with a great result from Madi doing what we hope was a comeback swim, after her major health problems. Unfortunately we had one casualty from the cold water with Rebecca Rogers pulling out due to the cold water.

In the 10km event Rachael Mader entered the water in her first ever 10km event. With the support from fellow South Coast swimmer & Open Water Champion, Alice Whiley, at the feeding station along with Head Coach Paul Higgs and the “cheer squad” that walked along part of the course in the last lap and on the finish line, Rachael completed the course!.

FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup (7th & 13th October) Alice Whiley left us again for international waters with the Australian Open Water Team to compete in, not one but two, 10km Open water events in the above Series.

Alice headed off to Hong Kong to compete on Sunday 7th October. The swim didn't go too well with a stomach bug hampering her race. Alice showed guts and determination by continuingand finished the race in 19th place.

Alice then headed of to Shantou, China, for her next 10km swim on Saturday 13th October. This was a better result finishing in 11th place.

This annually staged elite-level competition is organised around seven meets and takes place in some of the world's most amazing natural water bodies, either freshwater (lake, rowing course, river) or saltwater (sea).

The 2013 circuit of the FINA 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup kicked off in Santos (BRA) on January 27, then in Viedma (ARG) on February 2, Eilat (ISR) on March 1, Cancun (MEX) on April 13, Lac St-Jean (CAN) on July 25, Lac Megantic (CAN) on August 11, Hong Kong (HKG) on October 6, and concludes in Shantou (CHN) on October 13.

Club Of The Year 2011-2012 South Coast has been awarded Club of the Year by SwimmingSA for the 2011-12 year.

South Coast is thrilled to receive this award and thank the outstanding efforts of our members; Swimmers; in the water, both Pool and Open Water, our swimmers have shown some great performances, with several SA Champions. Our swimmers had the honour of being Basket Handlers at both the Short Course and Olympic Trials when held in Adelaide the past swim year.

Parents; supporting their children to participate in their chosen sport of swimming, taxi driver, supervising the Basket Handlers and the assistance with our Carnivals and the general everyday running and administration of our Club.

Coaches; none of the results achieved by our swimmers or our Club could have been achieved without the great efforts of our Head Coach Paul Higgs and Assistant Coach Brian Campbell. Keeping abreast of and implementing training for the various training needs of our swimmers has seen great results in the Pool, Open Water and Surf Lifesaving competitions.

Congratulations everyone on a job well done!

2012 SA State SC Championships The final sessions of the short course championships were completed on Sunday 26th August. The Championships concluded with the Club Team Relays on Sunday night.

This year we had a huge team of 36 swimmers attend the meet over the 2 weekends.

Congratulations to all our swimmers on their performances. A massive 86% of our attending swimmers achieved PBs with 11 Club Records broken, medals in Age and Open events and an Open Relay.

Assistant Coach Brian got into the mood of the Relays night and graced us with his African Drum playing; throughout the evening.

Our Relay Teams performed well with a few close 4th place finishes. Great swimming by many of the above mentioned swimmers along with Harvey Clarke, Rebecca Field, Isaac Freeman, Jamie Hole, Lois Naylor, Shannon Warrick and Josh Wheeler.

2012 Div 2 Short Course Series Winners!

Congratulations to the South Coast Team of 29 swimmers that competed in the Division 2 Series of meets at the State Aquatic Centre at Marion 26th May 21st July 2012.

South Coast finished 1st overall in the points score at the end of the 3 meets and took home the Overall Points Pennant.

Trophies were also awarded in each age group based on points. Six of our swimmers received trophies.

2012 SASI (South Australian Sports Institute) Appointments Congratulations to Alice Whiley on her selection onto the SASI Scholarship Squad based on her qualifying 10km Open Water swim at the 2012 Australian OWS Championships.

Congratulations also to Head Coach Paul Higgs. Paul has been appointed OWS - SASI Coach.

The SASI Swimming Program utilises a decentralised model where swimmers and their coaches are supported in their home programs. The program is targetted at putting swimmers onto senior National Teams. The program operates under the leadership of a coordinator with the provision of comprehensive sport science servicing during training and at competition.

Scholarship swimmers also receive access to the SASI strength and conditioning facility and recovery centre and receive fundng assistance with training and competition costs.

The SASI Swimming Program consists of a network of coaches and swimmers throughout Adelaide. The program involves the SASI scholarship Squad which is underpinned by a range of SwimmingSA Development Squads. The SASI scholarship Squad aims to develop and support swimmers and their coaches for selection to national teams for international events such as World Championships, Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan Pacific Championships and World Cups.

2012 Australian Championships/Olympic Trials Congratulations to swimmers Alice Whiley and Craig Nicoll on their achievements and qualifying for the Championships.

Alice Whiley competed in the 1500m Freestyle event finishing 6.46 sec outside her PB finishing 9th.

Craig Nicoll finished 14th in the 400m IM taking him into the B Finals where he achieved a PB, broke the Club Record and finished 13th overall. He also achieved a PB in the 50m Fly split equalling Brendan Dykes' Club Record, then went on to break the 100m Fly Club Record at the 100m Fly split!

100m Breaststroke; finished 0.03 secs outside his PB (what's with our swimmers & .03 of a second!)

Unfortunately Craig was DQ'd in the 200m Breaststroke Heat. He went in seeded 29th.

Craig went into the 200m IM (Heat) seeded 34th - finished in 27th place with a PB. Craig finally broke Brendan Dykes' 50m Fly Club Record at the 50m split! Craig has been after the record for years and stated prior to the race, that his goal was what he was going after in this swim! Congratulations Craig!!!

Craig finished off his program with a PB and a Club Record in the 50m Breaststroke.

Congratulations also to our swimmers who were Basket Handling at the event along with supervising parents on Finals nights. It was an enjoyable, tiring and memorable experience for them all. Unfortunately they had to wear "pink?" shirts and required to stay out of sight, so we didn't see them on TV. Many of them saw and "Hi 5'd" their idols. The ultimate thrill for some of them (that stayed at the Centre until after 11pm!) was seeing Ian Thorpe and getting his autograph. They also were seen on TV in an interview clip. (see above).

OWS Camp Congratulations to Alice Whiley who has been invited to attend a National OWS Camp in Queensland at the end of April. This camp is being run to kick start Swimming Australia's preparations for the 2016 Olympics.

Selection was based on Alice's recent performance at the National OWS Championships. Alice will spend the week training and then competing in an OWS event. Good luck & well done!

2012 Australian Open Water Championships Champion Lakes Regatta Centre, Perth. WA 17th – 19th February 2012 Congratulations to Alice Whiley on her amazing 10km swim. Alice finished 4th Australian, missing a Bronze Australian Championship medal by .03 of a second. Paul will be introducing rope climbing into his program to lengthen swimmers arms and will be encouraging long nails!

Alice had some hard work ahead of her over in WA with 43 10km female swimmers entered. More than 400 competitors are taking part, with this year’s Championship also attracting many international competitors from Canada, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, Malaysia and USA. Alice was the 1st SA swimmer and finished 5th overall behind Olympic & World Championship swimmer Melissa Gorman, Emily Seymour (both from Redcliffe), Tash Harrison and a visitor from Japan, Yumi Kida.

Alice is entered into to the 5km swim on Sunday but her competing will depend on how she feels after her 10km battle.

Well done Alice and Head Coach, Paul Higgs on a fantastic swim. Well done also to Anne Whiley, on the pontoon feed station. Anne apparently did a great job of feeding Alice!

2012 SA State Open Long Course Championships 27th – 29th January 2012-01-28 Congratulations to Logan Cooper and Craig Nicoll on their performances at the Championships. This was the first Open State Championship for Logan and would have been a bit nerve wrecking for him with some of the big names in swimming attending. Craig finally achieved the title “SA State Long Course Champion” in the 400m Individual Medley. Craig contested 4 events during the Championships, achieving 4 medals (detailed below), 3 PB Times and 2 Club Records.

2011 Telstra Australian Championships Craig makes 200m Breaststroke National Semi Finals!!

South Coast swimmers - Craig Nicoll & Alice Whiley - both qualified for the 2011 Telstra Australian Championships but due to conflicting timing, Alice made the tough decision to compete at the National Surf Championships in Qld. Craig Nicoll, along with Head Coach Paul Higgs, attended Australia's No. 1 swim meet of the year during the first 2 weeks of April. These Championships were also the selection trials for the World Championships to be held in China later this year.

Following his not so perfect lead up due to shoulder injury, Craig had a great meet, improving all his results from his seeded position in every swim and achieving 7 PB’s from his 6 swims, 6 Open Club Records and his first Semi Final swim at National level. South Coast Swimming Club finished 4th placed South Australian Club at the Telstra Australian Open Championships

2011 Australian Open Water Championships CONGRATULATIONS to Alice Whiley on her swim at the above Championships.

Alice competed in the Open 10km event and finished 5th Australian, 6th overall. Alice finished in a PB time of 2:05:26.00.

Alice was just 1 minute 24 seconds behind the 2nd Australian swimmer Danielle DeFrancesco (2:04:02.00), who will be heading off to Shanghai in July for the Open Water World Championship, along with the 1st place swimmer Melissa Gorman (1:59:03.00), with their sights set on a top ten finish and automatic Olympic qualification.

Alice was...approximately less than 100m away from being selected on to the Australian Open Water Team!

Well done Alice and Paul on an awesome result for themselves, our Club and the State.

Alice and Paul were also accompanied by Alice's mother Anne who kept Alice healthy leading up to the event and stood on the feeding station pontoon. Well done and great work Anne.

Alice and Paul Higgs (Team Head Coach) recently returned from the NSW Open Water Championships where Alice along with many other swimmers, representing SA, swam the same course and were very successful bringing home a swag of medals.

Alice won Gold in the 17 – 18yrs 10km swim.

2011 State Long Course Championships 20th – 25th January 2011

South Coast team attended the State Championships with some great results. The Championship was a new experience for some of our swimmers and the same old hard work for the others.

Craig Nicoll had an easier Championship than he normally has with now only competing in the Open events.

Craig Nicoll (19) competed in 5 events, going through to the finals in all the events, with Silver Medals in 50m & 100m Breaststroke and 400m IM. Rachael Mader (17) competed in 3 events, also going through to the finals in all the events, in the 17 – 18yr age group. Rachael finished 5th in her 50m Breaststroke & Butterfly events, achieving a long awaited PB in the 50m Fly and finished 7th in the 100m Freestyle event.

Josh Wheeler (16) was a finalist in the 16yr 100m Freestyle event, finishing in 5th place taking a further 0.14 seconds on top of his 1.21 sec PB in the preliminaries.

Logan Cooper (14) competed for the first time at a Championship in the 14yr 50m Breaststroke with a PB time of 40.27.

Josh Whitehead (12) competed in 4 events, achieved 4 JX times and PB’s in all his events taking a massive 6.25 and 6.02 seconds of his 100m & 200m Freestyle events respectively.

Nathan Hamill (12) competed in 3 events, achieved 3 JX times and 2 PB times in 50m Butterfly and 100m Freestyle.

Karla Brown (11) competed in her first State Championship, competing in 3 events and being a finalist in the 50m Freestyle event, finishing 7th. Karla achieved 4JX times (including a Tier 1 time) and 4 PB times including a 2.64 second PB in the 50m Freestyle preliminary with a further .85 seconds off in the final.

Tiffany Copley (11) competed in 9 events with swims in 5 finals. Tiffany achieved 8 JX Times, 4 being Tier 1 times. 7 PBs; 2.65 seconds in the 100m Breaststroke preliminaries with a further 1.01 seconds taken off in the finals. Tiffany’s 100m Freestyle time was reduced with a 2.71 seconds PB and a further 1.12 seconds taken off in the finals.

Nicole Mader (11) the youngest of the team competed in 4 events achieving 4 JX Times and 3 PB’s and being 0.01 second off her PB time for 50m Freestyle. Nicole knocked a decent 1.31 seconds off her 50m Fly and 1.75 seconds off her 50m Breaststroke with a 2.71second PB for the 100m Freestyle.

Alice Whiley would have been attending her last “Age” Championships but did not compete due to being selected onto the State Surf Lifesaving team competing at the Interstate Surf Lifesaving Championships in NSW along with fellow competitive pool swimmers Lily Warrick and Madison Wheeler.

2011 SA Country State LC Championships 14th – 16th January 2011 Assistant Coach Jemimah Bishop competed in the Championships held in Broken Hill.

Jem had great results considering her knee surgery last year and reduced training due to education and work commitments.

NSW State 5k & 10k Open Water Age & Open Championships Congratulations to Alice Wiley, winning Gold in her Age Group in the 10km event at the Championships, 4th Female overall and 1st South Australian. Alice was selected on to the SA Team to represent SA at the Championships with our Head Coach Paul Higgs appointed Head Coach along with Clovercrest Coach Jill Doyle. Well done Alice.

WA Open Water Swim Championship - Round 4 - Champion Lakes WA 26th November 2011 Congratulation to Alice Whiley on her Gold medal win and PB time of 2:02.33 in the 10km event at the above Championships.

Alice competed against the reigning Women’s State Open Water Champion Brooke Wilson and her training partner and recent South East Asia Games gold medallist Heidi Gan at the Swimming WA State Open Water Championships.

Winter Division 2 Series Congratulations to Rebecca Rogers (12yr) and Courtney Bristow (13yr) on finishing 3rd and 2nd respectively in their age groups after the completion of the Winter Division 2 Short Course Series. Well done girls and again, congratulations!!

World Uni Games - Shenzhen, China Alice Whiley returned from China after an impressive first international swim in the 10km Open Water swim event, finishing 10th place in a field of 22 swimmers. Alice competed against Worlds and Olympic champions in very warm waters (water temp was a warm 30+ degrees, only slightly warmer than waters of SA!!!!) and humid conditions. Alice then went on to compete in the pool in the 800m & 1500m events (can't find the results). Well done Alice and congratulations.

State SC Age (18yrs & Under) Championships CONGRATULATIONS to Courtney Bristow, Logan Cooper, Rebecca Rogers, Nathan Hamill and Karla Brown who all competed at the State SC Age (18yrs & Under) Championships from 22nd July.

2011 Telstra Australian Short Course Championships 1st – 3rd July 2011 SA Aquatic Centre – Marion Craig Nicoll and Alice Whiley both competed at the National Short Course Championships. With many South Coast families present at sessions to cheer on Craig & Alice this was a special occasion for both, being the first "home town" Nationals for both swimmers.

ALICE competed in the 1500m Freestyle and had a great swim recording a 3 second PB and finishing in 6th Place.

CRAIG competed in 6 events, recording 3 PB's plus one equal PB. Craig finished 10th in the 200m Breaststroke, and in an exciting Final of the 400m IM finished 4th place Australian (5th overall).

Congratulations to both swimmers on their personal achievements. As a Club, South Coast finished 3rd South Australian Club.

Congratulations also to the Basket Handlers and their Team Manager Beverley Rogers.

SA Swimmers First "Taste" Of The New Pool For many SA swimmers they had their first swim in the new South Australian Aquatic Centre competition pool.

South Coast's team along with Head Coach Paul Higgs headed to the pool for both Div. 1 Meet 1 sessions with some great swimming, PB's everywhere and Club Records took a beating thanks to Craig Nicoll. We witnessed an incredible race in the 800m Freestyle between Alice Whiley and Melody Remnant from Onkaparinga. Alice was ahead for the first part of the event but slipped to less than a second behind for the rest of the race. The finish was A DEAD HEAT!!! 9:13.23 for both swimmers.

Congratulations to all the swimmers that attended and our parents that officiated for the first time.

Club Championships...

Congratulations to all the swimmers that competed at the Club Championships. There was a lot of fast swimming with many Club Championship records smashed! Australian Open Water Team Selection Congratulations Alice Whiley on selection to the Australian National Open Water Team.

National Head Coach Leigh Nugent confirmed the selection on 31st March and congratulated both Alice and South Coast's Head Coach Paul Higgs on the achievment.

Alice will compete in her first International Event in Shenzen, China, in August.

2011 Telstra Australian Championships Craig makes 200m Breaststroke National Semi Finals!!

South Coast swimmers - Craig Nicoll & Alice Whiley - both qualified for the 2011 Telstra Australian Championships but due to conflicting timing, Alice made the tough decision to compete at the National Surf Championships in Qld. Craig Nicoll, along with Head Coach Paul Higgs, attended Australia's No. 1 swim meet of the year during the first 2 weeks of April. These Championships were also the selection trials for the World Championships to be held in China later this year.

Following his not so perfect lead up due to shoulder injury, Craig had a great meet, improving all his results from his seeded position in every swim and achieving 7 PB’s from his 6 swims, 6 Open Club Records and his first Semi Final swim at National level.

South Coast Swimming Club finished 4th placed South Australian Club at the Telstra Australian Open Championships

2010 State Open Water Championships 27th & 28th November - Brighton Beach SA Saturday morning the conditions were fairly hard and worsened during the event with strong winds and current, but our 4 swimmers conquered the waves and had great results for their efforts and all 4 medalled.

Congratulations to Alice Whiley (18), State 10km Champion 2nd year in a row beating Queensland Open Water Champion Natasha Harrison by 2min 7 sec, in a time of 2:17.37. Congratulations also to Sharon Beaver who finished 2nd South Australian.

Congratulations don't stop there. 2 "rookies" to the world of Open Water swimming, Joshua Whitehead and Rachael Mader both competed in the 2.5km in their respective age groups with great results.

Josh (12) finished the swim in 3rd place in the 12-13 age group, with a time of 51mins 8 sec much to the relief of his mother, Amanda, that he finished. Rachael (17) took out the Gold in the 16-18 age group, in a time of 40mins 19 sec, almost beating fellow Male Open swimmer Sam Fuller from Unley, missing out by 9 secs. (Sam trains with South Coast as well. The stirring was on Tuesday night!).

In the Female Open event 2 swimmers pulled out, one due to sea sickness only highlighting the conditions.

There were also a few competitors that did not finish in the age group events.

Madison Wheeler and Joshua Wheeler headed down to Brighton on Sunday for the 5km swim event. The conditions had deteriorated over night and during the morning and the event was eventually cancelled.

Hopefully all their hard work in training will not go to waste and the event is re scheduled.

Well done swimmers a great job once again.

Alice now heads off to Sydney with the SA Open Water High performance Squad in a few weeks along with our Head Coach, Paul Higgs to do it all again. We wish them both well.

2010 13 – 18 Years State Short Course Championships The State Championships were held 20th - 22nd August at the Adelaide Aquatic Centre.

Our small team of swimmers was made even smaller with a few of our swimmers too sick to compete.

The shining star of the meet would have to be Lily Warrick. Lily competed in 7 events over the weekend and achieved 8 PB's (Lily did a PB for 50m Butterfly in the 200m IM event).

Swimmers Rachael Mader and Alice Whiley also competed but both were sick, with Alice withdrawing from the 800m Freestyle event. In the morning session, Alice won Bronze in the 17-18yr 400m Freestyle event, also achieving a PB time for 100m split in the event.

Rachael competed in all her 5 events with a PB in the 50m Butterfly and finished 4th in the 17 - 18 yr 100m Freestyle event with a time close to her PB time.

2010 Australian Short Course Championships Congratulations to Craig Nicoll and Alice Whiley who headed off to Queensland with Head Coach, Paul Higgs and Team Manager Anne Whiley. They attended the Australian Open Championships in warm Queensland.

They had a great meet with some fantastic results. South Coast finished 5th SA Club behind Norwood, LeFevre Portside, Burnside and Playford Aquatic. A summary of their achievements day by day are below.

Day 1 Craig Nicoll PB 100m Breaststroke (PB 50m Split) Day 2 Craig Nicoll "B" Finalist 400 IM (14th) - No B Final, 1st Reserve for A Final.

Day 3 Craig Nicoll - 200m IM. A decision was made between Coach Paul Higgs and Craig after the warm up to withdraw from this race in favour of an attempt at a B Final position in the 200m Breast 200m Breaststroke...PB…finished in 21st place overall…just missed the B Final by 1.2 seconds...Open Club Record.

Alice Whiley - Arrived for her 1500m Freestyle swim on Sunday. A Big hug from Geoff Huegill. Saw Stephanie Rice in person. Oh yeah...swimming. Alice you're there to swim! Good luck Alice who is attending her first ever National swimming event.

Day 4 Craig Nicoll - 100m IM...PB…swam under one minute for first time ever in 59.69!!...47th place…Open Club Record.

50m Breaststroke PB…51st place overall…closing in on Club Record of Ashley Semmens.

Day 5 Craig Nicoll - had his 200m Backstroke swim, not as serious an event as his others, but essential as an IM'er.

He said he wanted to go out as fast as he could and see how well he could hang on to the back end. He swam a 100m PB at the halfway split, breaking the Open Club Record in the process, but finished 2 seconds slower than his overall PB. Alice Whiley - had to overcome first time nerves to swim her first ever National Pool event and finished with an awesome 5 second PB after a massive PB to qualify only weeks earlier. In the process, Alice swam 100m, 200m, 400m & 800m PBs at the splits as well as the 1500m PB...taking 4 club records in the process - one of which is Jackie Staples 800m Open Record...an amazing result!

SA State LC Championships 21st - 25th January 2010 South Coast’s team of swimmers along with Head Coach Paul Higgs attended the above meet recently with some outstanding results.

We had six swimmers attend the meet with 8 Medals being won.

Open: 1 Gold, 2 Silver Age: 1 Gold, 3 Silver, 1 Bronze.

Day 1 saw; Alice Whiley take out the Gold in the Open 1500m Freestyle event in a time of 17:42.70, missing the Australian Open 1500m Freestyle qualifying time by just 2 seconds. Alice took 24.06 seconds off her 3 month old PB and broke the Age and Open Club Records.

Madison Wheeler competed in the 13yr 200m IM and finished 8th in the 13yr 100m Butterfly Final (7th SA) Josh Wheeler finished 6th in 15yr 100m Butterfly Final (5th SA) and a Club Record Rachael Mader finished 7th in 16yr 200m IM Final (5th SA) and 6th in 16yr 100m Breaststroke Final (4th SA) Lily Warrick competed in the 14yr 200m IM & 100m Breaststroke events achieving PB times in both events Day 2 was attended by Craig Nicoll with his Australian Open qualifying times tumbling along with the start of many Age & Open Club Records.

Madison Wheeler finished a close 4th in the 13yr 800m Freestyle.

Lily Warrick competed in the 14yr 200m Breaststroke & 100m Freestyle events achieving PB times in both events Rachael Mader competed in the Open 50m Breaststroke and 16yr 100m Freestyle finishing 8th SA competitor Madison, Josh and Alice are now focusing on their next major event being the Australian Open Water Championships to be held in Melbourne 20th – 21st February.

Craig is also heading interstate for the Australian Open Championships/Commonwealth Games Trials to be held in March in Sydney.

State Open Water Championships 14th – 15th November 2009

Awesome results from the Open Water Swims saw six South Coast swimmers receive four State Medals, three PBs, and three National qualifying times for both Age and Open events.

Coach Paul Higgs accompanied six South Coast swimmers to the State Titles being held at Brighton beach on the weekend.

In the 5km event on Saturday, four of our swimmers took to the water, Madison Wheeler, Joshua Wheeler, Erin Warland and Bradley Jolly all got out there and had a go, with all four finishing the event. Erin and Brad both swam in this event for the first time and found it a hard going but they persevered and completed their events.

With Erin displaying some great team spirit, waiting at the finish line for fellow team mate Brad.

Madison Wheeler swam an awesome race with a massive 13 minute PB time of 1:09.38 taking out the Silver medal and well and truly qualifying for the National Age and Open Championships being held in Victoria in February. Joshua Wheeler also swam well taking 2 minutes off his best time in a time of 1:03.04 and a healthy qualifying time for the Age and Open events at the Nationals.

In the 10km event held on Sunday, it was Alice Whiley’s and Sharon Beaver‘s turn to take to the water. Alice was defending her title as 1st South Australian female in the Open event. Alice showed her usually determination, having had a bad preparation for this event with illness and school work, Alice put that all behind her and took on the challenge.

Alice led most of the way with a male interstate competitor hot on her heals most of the way. Alice did what she did last year; she went on a slight detour and was swimming out to sea for a short time but got back on track to take out the Gold in this gruelling event. Alice did a 5 minute PB time and finished in a National Age and Open qualifying time of 2:17.30 finishing 3rd overall behind two male competitors from interstate.Sharon Beaver swam the 10km event for the first time taking Bronze in the Open event. Although not a National qualifying swim, it was still a great swim.

Well done to you all, and congratulations on your individual achievements.

13 & Under JX Pentathlon The summer season for the junior swimmers started with what would have to be the most gruelling event on the swimming calendar.

The Pentathlon requires a swimmer to compete in four 50m events and dependant on age a 100m Freestyle event or 200m Individual Medley event. Awards given are based on the cumulative total time from all races.

This year South Coast had a team of 8 swimmers compete with some outstanding results.

Two of our swimmers achieved a placing in their age groups.

Tiffany Copley won Gold in the 10 year old age group and Nicole Mader won Silver in the 9 year old age group. Most of their times tumbled with Tiffany breaking 2 Club Records; 50m & 100m Freestyle, Nicole breaking the 100m Freestyle Club Record. Congratulations to both girls on some fantastic swimming.

For Siobhan Nurmi, Rebecca Rogers and Joshua Whitehead, this was a whole new experience for them having only swum in short course events. “A 50m pool is a long way!” but, they all took on the challenge and set some great times for them to work on. Rebecca had a little trouble with the Butterfly and was unfortunately disqualified for the 50m Butterfly and the “fly” caught her out in the Individual Medley event also, resulting in disqualification.

Some of the Personal Best (PB) times our young swimmers achieved were impressive.

Nicole Mader and Tiffany Copley annihilated their long course 100m Freestyle times with Nicole doing a 14.79 second PB and Tiffany taking 11.27 seconds off her best time.

Hot on the heals of Nicole & Tiffany’s fantastic results was Abigail Roebuck taking 12.7 Seconds off her long course 50m Backstroke time.

Nathan Hamill was also flying, literally, with a 4.88 second PB in his 50m Butterfly and then went on to do a 3.30 second PB in the 200m Individual Medley event toward the end of a very long and tiring meet.

Lauren Hamill competed in three of the five events, recording a well earned PB in the 50m Breaststroke event and should have won a medal for the happiest face for the day, always smiling!

A big “Group Hug!” and “Well Done!” to all of our swimmers, Parents and Coaches for a job well done…

Editors Note: A certain persons calves have fully recovered (took 3 days) from Officiating at the meet in the Marshalling area but never wants to see stairs again. She highly recommends learning to be an official and help with our kid’s sport of swimming but stay away from Marshalling!!

Open, 12 & Under & Relay State Short Course Championships 17th – 19th July 2009

The end of winter for our Open and 12 & Under swimmers in South Australia has been heralded by the State Short Course Championships being competed. Our swimmers that competed achieved some great results with many PBs. The relays produced some fantastic results with 7 PBs from 12 Lead off’s. 8 out of 12 of our teams finished in the top 8 with our 17 & Under girls finishing a close 4th in the Freestyle and again 4th in the Medley relay events.

It was great to see our younger swimmers have a go, for many of them this was their first swimming competition they had attended. It was also great to see one of our older swimmers back out there having a go again, Harriet Whiley. Nerves were playing a big part in the event for some of our swimmers and not just the young ones (Harriet!), and so we had a very quiet team of swimmers this year, but they got up there on the blocks and did some awesome swims with several teams taking over 5 seconds off their times. A big WELL DONE!!.

Unfortunately a few of our swimmers missed this fun night or swam with injuries received from other sports that they compete in. Be more careful next year and we look forward to seeing you at the relays and uninjured!!

In the individual events Tiffany Copley started the meet off with a 2.21 second PB in her 50m Breaststroke and later on taking 2.76 seconds off her 100m Breaststroke. Vanessa Kreslin, getting back into things after a couple off injuries during the season, did PBs in her 50m Breaststroke and 100m IM and annihilated her 200m Breaststroke time with a massive 11.51 second PB (enjoy your KFC Vanessa, Coaches should never have a side bet with a swimmer!!). Vanessa finished in the top 8 in 3 of her 4 events. Rachael Mader swam. She was asked to do a memorable 50m Breaststroke swim for Coach Paul. She did, 40 seconds dead. 3.54 seconds slower than her best ever time of 36.46, achieved when she was 13! Back to the drawing board for Rachael & Paul.

Craig Nicoll cemented his times for the Australian SC Championship with improved qualifying times and PBs 100m IM, 50m & 100m Breaststroke and 400m IM events. Craig has qualified for 8 events at the Championships.

He will be competing 7 off the events, dropping the 800m Freestyle in order to focus on the Backstroke, Breaststroke and IM events. Craig broke 5 Club Records, Age and Open, all currently held by him. Congratulation and well done Craig.

Alice Whiley, also recovering from the ailments off winter (Colds should be banned!) came back with a vengeance and took 2.76 seconds off her 800m Freestyle only to knock off a further 1.45 seconds during her 1500m Freestyle swim in which she knocked an incredible 27.88 second off her time. Phew!! Alice also broke 2 long standing Club Records for the 1500m Freestyle, the Open held by Emma Gabrielson and the 17-18 yr held by Amanda Carne.

Alice almost took the 800m Freestyle 17 – 18 yr held by Jackie Staples. Well done and congratulations Alice.

No accolade to the parents this year as they didn’t do much apart from transport our valuable athletes to and from the Adelaide Aquatic Centre, made out they were Team Managers who ensured directives from SwimmingSA were conveyed to the Club, Officiate on pool deck, Time keeping, spent a mountain of money on drinks, snacks and take away on the way home. No, no accolades. You are priceless, the swimmers and the Club thank you.

South Coast Carnival 21st June 2009

South Coast Swimming Club hosted its “Last Chance Qualifying” meet for the Short Course Open, 12 & Under State Championships. It was the Club’s first State Qualifying meet with a complete change of format, so we were sailing in unchartered waters.

With many Open Carnivals during the summer season running over time by hours, we were pleased that our Carnival only ran over time by approximately 30 minutes. Phew!!

It was pleasing to see many of our members, who do not normally compete, have a go. Many of them did some great PBs and finished in the top 8 of their events. A few of our swimmers, Logan Cooper, Craig Nicoll and Aaron Reynolds, were missing on the day due to injuries and illness. We wish them a speedy recovery.

Clovercrest Open Carnival Sunday, 22nd March 2009 Nicole Mader, Rachael Mader, Jamie Pierpoint, Aaron Reynolds, Courtney Reynolds, Josh Wheeler and Madison Wheeler headed north to compete in the last summer carnival for this swim year.

Nicole started the day off with a Bronze in 50m Freestyle then Silver in 50m Backstroke. Courtney did well recording a PB in the 50m Breaststroke event.

The older swimmers then took over with some great swimming.

Josh did an awesome 1500m Open Freestyle swim, taking 29.26 sec. of his time, broke the Club Record by 16.5 sec. and took out the Gold medal. While Josh was busy swimming the 1500m, Madison was over the other side of the pool swimming the 800m Open Freestyle event, finishing an impressive 4 th place and recording State Qualifying times for both the 400m (split time) & the 800m Freestyle.

Aaron did a fantastic job of the 200m 12/O Freestyle finishing 4 th, he also did a great 100m Backstroke in a PB time of 1.21.62 but was disqualified like many other swimmers in the backstroke events, possibly due to the confusion of 2 sets of flags across the pool.

Rachael won Bronze in the 50m 13/O Freestyle and 4th in the 200m 13/O IM but unfortunately no PBs. Jamie swam well, taking 9.13 sec. off his 50m Breaststroke, winning Bronze along the way in the 13/O event and 4.41 sec. of his 50m Fly.

2009 South Coast Swimming Club Championships st

South Coast has finished the swim year off with its annual Club Championships. 49 swimmers competed in over 250 events over the 2 nights. There was some great swimming with 18 records broken along with many huge PBs being achieved.

Some of the Championship Records that were broken at the Championships were long standing records.

Madison Wheeler (12) took care of the Staples sister’s records, taking Gina Staples’ 400m Free by just under 6 seconds then took Jackie Staples’ (recent World Championship Trials 200m Fly finalist) 200m Fly record by over 6 seconds. The most awesome record taken would have to be Tiffany Copley’s (9) record breaking swim in the 9 year old 200m Freestyle event, Tiffany broke the record by a massive 31 second. Tiffany also broke another long standing record, this time a Club Record held by Jackie Staples in the 9 year old 100m IM event.

Sharon Beaver not being out done by the young ones took just under 25 seconds of the 17/Over 200m Free and under 9 seconds of the 200m Breaststroke Championship Records.

Craig Nicoll was in fine form breaking 5 Championship Records and 6 Club Records and equalling a long standing 50m Free Club Record. Craig is competing for the last time at the National Age Championships in Sydney this coming week, so hopefully he will keep up the momentum and achieve some good results in Sydney.

Results are being finalised with presentation of Championships trophies to be made at the Club Presentation night to be held 4th July at the Moana Surf Life Saving Club.

Well done and congratulations to all participants, it was two nights of great swimming.

SAPSASA 2009 State Metropolitan and Country Championships Competitive swimming may have finished for the summer season, but our swimmers have been kept busy with school swimming such as school carnivals, SAPSASA and Junior Sprints.

Even with the days being long and tiring, it was great so see so many of our swimmers compete with great enthusiasm and success, at the recent SAPSASA State finals. South Coast swimmers performed well for their respective School Districts and achieved many outstanding PBs, made finals and collected a few medals along the way.

Australian School Sport Swimming Championships are being held during September in Perth WA. Good luck to our swimmers that are nominating for selection on to the State Team; we wish you all the best.

2009 Junior Sprints State Finals 2009 Junior Sprints Finals were competed on Saturday, 28th March 2009. It was great to see so many of our swimmers attend the competition all swimming well and having fun.

Assistant Coach Emily attended her first SA meet and was pleased with the performance and behaviour of our swimmers. A few non club swimmers who competed in our area finals found our Club and with assistance from Michelle Copley, showing them the “ropes� of competitive swimming, got through their first State finals without too much trauma.

With a 94% PB rate, (a massive 31 swims out of 33 were PBs!!) Club Records broken and the medal tally of 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze, South Coast swimmers had a very successful meet.

South Coast swimmers Vanessa Kreslin, Madison Wheeler, Lily-Beth Warrick, Jamie Pierpoint, Aaron Reynolds, Joshua Wheeler, Rachael Mader, Alice Whiley and Craig Nicoll competed at the SA State Long Course Championships with some outstanding results. Alice and Craig both won Medals in Open events as well as in their Age Group. Our younger swimmers achieved PBs in nearly all of their events with a few too many 4ths. Waikerie Open Carnival Saturday, 10th January 2009

PBs, Medals, JX Award times, Laughs, Tears …Fun. Those are the words to describe this event.

A Team of 12 Swimmers Maggie Cooper, Lauren Hamill, Courtney Reynolds, Nicole Mader, Nathan Hamill, Logan Cooper, Emily Caudle, Madison Wheeler, Lily-Beth Warrick, Aaron Reynolds, Joshua Wheeler and Rachael Mader and 11 Parents arrived in Waikerie on Friday in readiness for the Carnival the next day.

The “laughs” started with the story of one family getting slightly lost and were heading for Whyalla again! One family had a flat tyre just outside of Truro with one very scared child not wanting to get out the car due to the story she had just heard about that town! One family thought they would make a trip of it and stopped off at Wolf Blass Winery (sure they didn’t sample the wine???), lunch in Nuriootpa and a visit to the Chocolate Factory. Two families also took their time stopping at Mannum for lunch on the river. By the time everyone had arrived they were free of “city life” doldrums and were ready to have fun. What swimming Carnival?

The laughs continued when a one of the families wanted to go to the local boat shop and have a look at some boats. The boat shop guide (a parent) recommended walking to which the reply was “no, we will drive”, the guide and purchasers and a fellow member piled in the car. They drove out of the caravan park entrance turned right, got on the main road and immediately turned right again. The boat shop was right next door! The only female member of the party learnt not to step on a boat at the rear when it is on the boat trailer. When the party had finished and returned to the park it was good to hear that seat belts were worn by the passengers in the back of the vehicle even for such a short distance…By this time is was 5pm somewhere in the world!

Evening meal was at the Waikerie Hotel…Boy they must have big cows & chickens up there. Rump Steak almost took up half the plate and the Chicken Schnitzel even bigger! The food was great.

After the meal it was back to the Caravan Park, oh dear, we forgot to get the kids to do a training session…So it was a game of “hide & seek” among other games, walking & running between the cabins and the playground equipment, which was a long way from the cabins, we think they got plenty of exercise and kept their muscles toned!

The day of the Carnival started with a cooked breakfast, with a recent arrival from the UK, Mr X, doing some of the cooking or was that burning. Us English folk know how to pillage & plunder & burn but leave the BBQ to the Aussies. Clouds of smoke erupted from the BBQ. Photographic evidence of the burning is available.

It is always a good idea that if you give out advice or information, take note of what you say for yourself. A parent who will remain nameless as has been the case with all the stories so far, was nagging people at the Club “don’t forget the Acceptance Cards, you may need them at this Carnival, always take your Acceptance Cards”, did she take her own advise. At approximately 2 or 3 minutes before closing of entries the parent (who is still at the Caravan Park) realise her children do not have their acceptance cards, they are still at home in Adelaide!

She then rings up a fellow parent and blurts out “get acceptance cards for Miss X & Miss X and fill them in” Poor Saviour of the day Lyn Caudle just grabbed Craig Cooper and was able to get hold of cards and fill them in, in a time frame of about 1 minute. A big THANK YOU to Lyn & Craig. Phew!!

On to the swimming. South Coast swimmers swam well with many PBs, JX Award Times, Medals and 4ths!

Some of the finishes were so close, nail biting stuff.

We had a lot of firsts on the day. Nathan and Logan both won their first individual medals. Madison won her first Australian Gold Medal and Lily-Beth won her first Gold medal. Emily did a Pike dive which would have been a “10” if we were competing in Diving, Emily did however hit her head on the bottom of the pool and

there were concerns she had concussion. So off to the First Aid Van for Emily, fortunately everything was fine apart from a slight headache and sore neck.

Josh was on fire winning Gold in all his swims, well done Josh. Aaron had some close finishes but unfortunately was “piped at the post” and got 4th on a couple of occasions. Rachael was cruising, literally, her finish in the 100m Freestyle was the longest glide ever seen, she was so lucky to get Gold in the event.

For the second time in three years, South Coast Swimming Club has received a Silver Award in the Australian Unity Go Club PB program.

Club Swimming is the strength and success of Swimming in Australia. It has been identified as a major priority with Swimming Australia’s Strategic Plan 2006 - 20011.

Swimming Clubs in Australia are made up of Swimmers, Coaches, Parents, Officials and Administrators providing a fun and safe environment for kids and parents alike, many offering or having links to learn to swim schools, coaches and training, fun club race nights, and a strong social program.

Australian Unity GO Club PB is a National swimming club standard established to recognise and reward swimming clubs, by measuring their performance across five key areas: • Membership; measuring the club’s ability to attract new members and maintain or increase its existing membership base.

• Administration; measuring the club’s ability to operate efficiently, safely and remain financially viable.

• Activities; measuring the club’s participation levels, from club nights through to National championships, as well as the number of social activities on offer, for its members.

• Coaching and Officiating; Measuring the number of technical officials available, the coach to swimmer ratio and the level of participation in regional and State development activities.

• Marketing and Promotion; measuring the club’s commitment and ability to; communicate with its members, attract sponsorship dollars, utilise the local media and promote the club through endorsements, webpage exposure and activities for non-member organisations.

Cold Hard Gold!!

The 2008 State Open Water Championships were held Sunday 9th November at Brighton Beach.

The 5km event, to be run on Saturday, was postponed due to bad weather conditions and was run in conjunction with the 10km events on Sunday. This meant that several of our swimmers could not compete due to other commitments.

Madison Wheeler, Joshua Wheeler, Alice Whiley and Craig Nicoll braved the wind, waves and the cold and headed off.

The water was cold and choppy making it hard work for the swimmers, but South Coast swimmers were not deterred and gave it their all!

Craig unfortunately could not finish the race and pulled out of the 5km race at about the 3km mark due to coldness. He spent approximately 30 minutes in the shower trying to warm up!

That left Madison, Josh and Alice. Oh and the Coach, Parents and Supporters braved the elements. Gold medal effort to you all.

Madison (12), swimming in her first long distance event, put on an awesome performance and finished 2 nd taking out the Silver in the 11 – 13 age group. We thought she was going for the 10km swim as she continued swimming past the finish line. South Coast cheer squad had to yell to her to stop! Maybe next year Madison you can do the 10km.

Josh (14) also swam well, finishing 4th in the 14 – 15 age group. Josh was the 1st 14year old over the line, unfortunately no medal due to the combined age grouping of his event. Josh has achieved Australian Age OWS Qualifying time for the 2nd year in a row.

Finally, Alice.

Alice (16) competed in the 16 – 18 age group 5km event and the Open 10km event. Alice completed the 5km with ease (from a spectators point of view) finishing 1st and taking out the Gold. Alice continued on her journey to the 10km finish line. The last 1km seemed to be taking its toll on her and her mother, who everyone deserted as it is well known knowledge around the Club about the bruises she leaves on bystander’s arms! Poor Rachael was not quick enough and may never be able to play tennis again! (not that she could before anyway).

Alice mustered every bit of guts and determination and passed the finish line in an Australian Open Qualifying time of 2:22.15. Alice finished 1st South Australian and took out the Gold. Alice will also receive prize money for this event but after paying out for Management Fee (Club), Coach Fee (Paul), Dietician (Mom), Cross Trainer (Dad), Personal Photographer and Support group (SCSC Members) Alice will have a few dollars left to spoil herself with and so she should….

A great effort from all of our swimmers, you all deserve Gold. Well done Madison, Joshua, Alice and Craig.

2008 Unley Open Carnival Awesome! The weather was perfect, the team was perfect and as usual the parents were perfect...What more can be reported... Oh, yes the results…

We had a great day...bit long, again, but that is what is looking like the norm.

Many years ago South Coast’s Logo was a shark...I wonder if the Club with its Orange & Black were maybe known as South Coast Tiger Sharks. Our swimmers are very much like tiger sharks... Scavengers (yes, you should see what the swimmers eat!), relaxed, slow moving sharks with unparalleled speed when they go for what they want. This describes what we see on a regular basis at meets that South Coast attend. Go Tigers!!

On to the important stuff.

Our small team of 9 swimmers won 9 medals. 2 Gold, 4 Silver, 3 Bronze and 2nd 100m Dash for Cash. There was an avalanche of PB’s and 4 Club Records broken.

Aaron Reynolds did some great swims and has achieved State Qualifying times in the 50m & 200m Freestyle.

Courtney Reynolds showed some good improvement and swam some great times. Abigail Roebuck got through to the BBB Handicap final finishing 5th and did a 2.65 sec PB. Lily-Beth Warrick what a great swimmer, who unfortunately has a lot of competition in her age group, swam some awesome times and has achieved State Qualifying times in 100m Backstroke and 100m Breaststroke with a 9.27 sec PB!. Shannon Warrick, who is relatively new to the racing scene, did some great swims. Madison Wheeler was awesome. Madison achieved State qualifying times in all her events and took a huge 11.63 secs off her 100 Fly, 7.57 secs off 100m Backstroke and 2.45 secs off 50m Freestyle and established a State Qualifying time in the 200m Medley. Duel medallists Nicole Mader continued her winning ways in the 50m Breaststroke event, her swim can only be described as awesome and broke a Club Record along the way. Rachael Mader although winning 4 medals did not achieve any PB’s but provided some thrilling entertainment in a few of her swims, especially the Dash for Cash. Joshua Wheeler pulled out some great swims doing PBs in all of his events taking a massive 5.78 secs off 100m Fly and 4.67 secs off 200m Freestyle. Joshua has also broken 3 Club Records at this meet. Well done Josh!.

For those of us that don’t fully understand the world of swimming these results of our swimmers are amazing considering they are in endurance training. The senior swimmers are swimming distances of approx. 8kms in a training session with the younger swimmers doing approx. 4kms. Well done to you guys you have the biggest hearts!

As mentioned previously it was a long day and our swimmers swam in all their events with no hesitation or complaint. There were a few from parents toward the end of the meet but the wishes of the swimmers won through.

It must be mentioned; if members of the Club want an informative up to date website, photographs must be allowed to be taken...Don’t be camera shy!

Well done to all our swimmers, every one of them “was a winner!”

South Coast Carnival 17TH August, 2008

South Coast Swimming Club hosted its “Last Chance Qualifying” meet for the Short Course 13 – 18 State Championships. It was also the Club’s last Carnival in its current format. Next year, 21st June, South Coast will be hosting a SwimmingSA Sanctioned meet and will again be a “Last Chance Qualifying” meet for next year’s State Championships, so make sure you mark this in your 2009 diary.

It was a great atmosphere, with the swimming community in Olympic mode; the swimmers couldn’t wait to hit the water (warm up started early!!). No doubt many swimmers would have been inspired by the great success of SA swimmer Hayden Stoeckel and his Silver and Bronze Medal wins and the performance of the Australian Swim Team.

South Coast looks good against the USA Swim Team with 15 Gold, 15 Silver and 14 Bronze! Jamie Pierpoint took out Silver in the Handicap BBB 13 & Over event with Aaron Reynolds & Joshua Wheeler taking out Gold in the Partnered Relay event. Well done Jamie, Aaron & Joshua.

It was pleasing to see many of our members, who do not normally compete, have a go. Many of them did some great PBs and some finishing in the top 8 of their events.

SWIMMINGSA NEWS June Summer A Grade Age Group Points Awards were presented at the 2nd Division 1 meet on Saturday 21st June, 2008.

Travis Kreslin received 1st place in the 14 - 15 year old Age Group and Craig Nicoll received 2nd place in the 16 - 17 year old Age Group.

Congratulations and well done boys!!!

The 2nd Division 1 meet was also a record breaking meet for not 1 but 3 swimmers. Joshua Wheeler broke the 13 year old 1500m Freestyle Club Record (His own record!), Alice Whiley also broke the 1500m Freestyle Club Record for 16 year olds and Craig Nicoll broke the 17 year old 400 I/M Club Record Congratulations to these swimmers on their achievements, some of the Club Records broken have been standing for many years.

AGM & Club Presentation Night May Our AGM & Presentation night was held Saturday 31st May at Marion Hotel.

Serious business was achieved in amongst the celebrations. Our new committee was elected and the really serious stuff, Club Awards, were presented.

Congratulations to all recipients of the Club Annual Age Points Trophies, Swimming Australia JX Awards and Club Championship Trophies. (A full list of recipients is on our website).

South Coast Swimming Club’s Philosophy is: Sport should be fun, team building and promote self esteem, honesty, responsibility and the right attitudes to competition and other competitors in the sport of swimming. Congratulation and well done to all our swimmers for continuing to up hold these philosophies of our Club and on your hard work and performances during the year.

It was a record breaking year. Many Club & Championship Records were broken this year. Craig Nicoll & Joshua Wheeler claimed a few of Ashley Semmens’ records, along with Travis Kreslin, Alice Whiley, Rachael Mader and Brendan Dykes breaking a few more long standing records. It was also great to see our younger swimmers, namely, Tiffany Copley & Rebecca Field setting and breaking Championship Records. Well done Parents, thank you for your assistance with the many jobs that have to be undertaken to help provide our swimmers with a fully functioning Club.

For some of our swimmers they have reached a goal or realised a dream this year.

A really big “thank you” to Paul for helping them achieve these. Paul has had a busy year with his swimmers, many of them competed in State and National events, both in the pool and Surf Lifesaving.

Thank you to Paul, Swimmers and Parents for making this a great Club.

2008 Australian Age Championships April The Australian Age Championships and Open Water Championships have been competed for this year with some great performances by our Team of swimmers that attended. Craig Nicoll competed in the Age Championships in the 100m & 200m Breaststroke events. Unfortunately no PB's but Craig acquired plenty of experience in dealing with a different climate and the size of this event. This ends what has been an incredible year for Craig, attendeding his first SC Open and Olympic Trials Championships along with his second Australian Age. After a short rest it's back to the pool for the Short Course season. Well done Craig on your achievements this swim year.

The Australian Age Open Water Championships were attended for the first time by a South Coast team. Swimmers Shani Copley, Joshua Wheeler, Alice Whiley & Emma Gabrielson competed in their respective age groups in the 5km event.

Josh and Alice both finished 7th in their events.

Josh acheived a PB time by taking 45.07 seconds off his current time. Shani almost achieved a PB being 45.61seconds off her PB time. Alice & Emma, who both competed in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships held in Perth only a week earlier, entered their events with the onset of sore throats and cold symptoms, but still achieved some good times.

I believe it was not all hard work, the Swimmers, Paul, parents and siblings had the opportunity to visit Australia Zoo together. Hopefully they will have photos of their experiences to share. Keep a check on the Club Photo album.

Well done Shani, Josh, Alice, Emma and Craig, great effort everyone and we look forward to seeing you back in the pool, training hard for next year.

Club Championships 2008 April Wow!! What a fantastic couple of nights of racing we have just had at the annual Club Championships. A record number of Club Championship and Club Records were broken. There were a total of 15 Championship Records broken and 4 Club Records broken.

Several of Ashley Semmens' records have bitten the dust, with Josh Wheeler taking his 200m Freestyle Championship Record and Craig Nicoll taking his 200m I/M and 200m Breaststroke Club Records. Well done boys.

Not to be out done by the boys, Tiffany Copley (8) set a New Record for 100m Freestyle and Rebecca Field (9) set a New Record for 100m Backstroke. Well done girls.

Congratulations to everyone that competed. You all made it a great two nights of racing with your enthusiasm, team spirit and achievements Well done everyone!

"South Australian clubs don’t always win many medals at Australian surf life saving championships but Brighton’s Di Wallace-Ward may need to call Armaguard before she heads back across the Nullarbor Plain.

Wallace-Ward was the dominant figure in the women’s 45-49 years division, winning four gold medals.

She was too strong for her rivals in the surf race, rescue tube, iron woman and board events".

Well done Di and all our swimmers competing in the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships being held in WA.

Junior Sprints March Many of our swimmers competed in the Junior Sprints on 29th March. This was a new experience for Lauren Hamill (Nathan's sister) and Owen Evans (Daniel's brother) both swam in the 50m Freestyle and achieved great times for their first competitive swims. Great swims were done by finalists Nicole Mader, Madison Wheeler, Aaron Reynolds. Tiffany Copley, Jamie Pierpoint and Vanessa Kreslin also competed in several finals and medaled in Freestyle & Breaststroke events. Congratulations to medalists Vanessa Kreslin, 1st Breaststroke, Tiffany Copley, 3rd Freestyle and Jamie Pierpoint, 3rd Breaststroke. Swimmers, Daniel Evans, Nathan Hamill, Elisha K, Jessica Trott and Lily Warrick also competed and achieved great times and experience for the forthcoming winter season meets.

South Coast Rules the Waves March Surf Life Saving Championships were held 15th - 16th March at Middleton, with our swimmers taking 54 Gold, 41 Silver and 37 Bronze medals, a total of 132.

This will increase as some of the results of our swimmers have not been received yet. In Under 17 Ironperson, SC came 1st, 2nd & 3rd., Alice Whiley, Jessica Wreford & Caitlyn Gray. Under 19 Ironperson was won by Emma Gabrielson.

Open Ironperson was won by Brenden Dykes.

Olympic Trials and Australian Age Championships March Good luck to Craig Nicoll, Craig is heading off to Sydney to compete in the Olympic seletion trials. A few weeks later Craig heads off to Queensland with Shani Copley, Alice Whiley, Josh Wheeler & Emma Gabrielson in the Australian Age Championships.

SAPSASA Results March Congratulations to Grace Gray - 1 Gold, 1 Silver, Nathan Hamill - 1 Bronze, Vanessa Kreslin - 1 Bronze, Lily Warrick - 1 Silver, 1 Bronze and Madison Wheeler - 1 Silver. What a great result for our swimmers, some of them have only been swmming for a short time. Again Congratulations and Well Done!

2008 Whyalla Carnival It was hot and Gold..8 of our swimmers attended the Whyalla Carnival held on 8th March.

Most of the families arrived Friday afternoon, welcomed by a cool sea breeze.

The Carnival was a little on the hot side but did not stop our swimmers acheiving 9 Gold, 2 Silver and 3 Bronze medals, 3rd place Trophy for the Handicap Relay and a Perpetual Trophy for fastest 10 & Under Butterfly. Many times tumbled and many kilos of weight were lost!!

Junior Sprints Area Finals February Area Finals were held 15th - 17th February, with many of our younger swimmers going to the Finals in March. Well done to the following swimmers; Logan Cooper, Tiffany Copley, Daniel Evans, Nathan Hamill, Elisha K, Nicole Mader, Jamie Pierpoint, Aaron Reynolds, Jessica Trott, Lily-Beth Warrick and Madison Wheeler. A special mention to the great swim done by Lauren Hamill. It was great to see a young new member step up on the blocks and have a go. Unfortunately for Courtney Bristow and Kathryn Hunt only the first 3 swimmers go through to the finals but both girls swam well and recorded PB's.

Hopefully next year they will be in the first 3 and not 4th...

SA State Championships January The SA State Championships have finished with nearly all our swimmers doing PB's in just about every swim they did!. Olympic Trials and Australian Age qualifying times have been achieved.

There were also a few close to qualifying times, so fingers crossed for the next A grade swims for those swimmers.

It was a tiring experience for the swimmers but they did very well, especially the finalist competing in the evenings, with some of them chipping even more off their times.

Well done not only to the Medalist and Finalist listed below but to Vanessa Kreslin, Shani Copley, Aaron Reynolds, Tara Smale, Jessica Smale, Brendon Dykes and Sharon Beaver on their individual performances and achievements.

Travis Kreslin: 1 Bronze Jessica Wreford: 1 Silver Alice Whiley: 1 Silver Finalists were; Rachael Mader, Emily Rowe, Josh Wheeler, Madison Wheeler and Melissa Wreford.
