The Beauty Craze

he beauty industry has absolutely exploded in Australia over the past 5 years, with stores popping up all over the country, new brands being introduced every day and people going crazy for big name products. An industry that was once about looking beautiful with less, has now seen the beauty world transform into an artform. Make-up is no longer about popping on a bit of blush and lippy in the morning, it’s an art that can literally take hours to master each day. Priming, toning, baking, concealing, contouring, highlighting and blending – are just some of the techniques used in one day of make-up application. Recent studies have shown that us Aussies are actually buying more beauty products than ever before, but why? Why are we so obsessed with cosmetics all of a sudden?

YouTube Stars

Michael Finch Shannon Harris

Some would attribute the beauty craze to the video-sharing website, YouTube and its role in producing popular beauty vloggers from all over the world. The medium gives amateur make-up artists and make-up lovers the means to share their talents, their lives and favourite products with their subscribers and others who tune in. Many of them have now created names for themselves, some with thousands of followers and others with millions. Shannon Harris (otherwise known as Shaaanxo) is a leading beauty and fashion vlogger from New Zealand. She started her YouTube channel in 2010

FACTORY DIRECT and within a year her following increased by thousands. In 2011, she started a second channel dedicated to daily vlogs (every-day lifestyle videos). Her main channel now has over 3 million subscribers, tuning in each week to see her test out new make-up and play with fun new beauty trends, and her second channel has over 500,000 subscribers. It was with this popularity, she opened up her own cosmetics company called XO and the brand has since become a popular choice for millions of make-up lovers around the globe. Another popular beauty vlogger is Michael Finch from Brisbane, who rose to fame on YouTube after posting videos of himself doing his own makeup. Now a qualified make-up artist, Michael Finch posts regular videos of himself and guests doing their own make-up over a chat or competing in make-up challenges – good and bad. Whilst he is somewhat controversial with his honest opinion on make-up brands, he now has over 500,000 subscribers and the number continues to rise. Beauty vlogging and tutorials have become so popular with the younger generations (between the ages of 15-30), that some cosmetic companies base their whole marketing plans around sponsoring YouTubers with large followings (like the ones we mentioned) and handing out their products for them to review.

Earlier this year, cosmetics brand Tarte went above and beyond with their marketing strategy. The company sent a group of 20 beauty YouTubers and bloggers to Hamilton Island, treating them to a weekend of amazing accommodation, food and luxury experiences, as well as gave them a whole lot of free products. As a result, their brand and their products were introduced to millions and millions of YouTube subscribers and social media followers around the globe. Their sales have sky-rocketed since! Great move!

American Brands One major contributor in Australia’s beauty craze would be the introduction of popular American brands in cosmetic stores. Australia’s quite late to the party when it comes to big name brands in the make-up world, although we can find just about any brand in stores or buy them online now, it wasn’t as

VERTICALS | VENETIANS ROLLERS easy a few years ago. Major American brands - Too Faced, Urban Decay, Mecca, Nars, Tarte - were once very hard to come by in Australia. Australian Laws surrounding testing methods and certain beauty ingredients made it hard for many products to be sold in Oz. Australian travellers were going as far as stocking up on big name brands overseas, just so they could get their make-up fix. Of course, now with many products being altered to suit the Australian market, make-up lovers are spoilt for choice! Another contributor is, of course, the emergence of International make-up chain stores in Oz including Mecca Maxima, Sephora and Mac. The hype around these stores opening in Brisbane was incredible, with people lined up for kilometres just to get in the doors first! Purely focused on well-known beauty brands, these types of stores are popping up all over the country. The beauty industry seems to be getting bigger and bigger in Oz and we don’t see it stopping anytime soon. What do you think about it all?

Hats, Hats and more Hats!

s Melbourne Cup sneaks closer, I thought to take a bit more of an in-depth look into choosing the perfect millinery for the race that stops a nation. Who better to ask than one of Brisbane’s top millinery designers, Meredith McMaster from self-titled label Meredith McMaster Millinery. This talented creator is not only behind many of the looks on race day, but she also sits on the judging panel of many racewear competitions year-round with Brisbane Racing Carnival.

4 | October 2017

I asked Meredith the best advice in choosing your millinery for the big day – and her top tip was “Trust your milliner!! A good milliner will guide the client and help them find the right hat/ headpiece.” What I also learnt from chatting with Meredith is that there is a huge misconception where people say, “hats just don’t suit me” but with a dedicated milliner helping, it is just a matter of finding the “right” hat. Meredith explains “it can be as simple as a 2mm adjustment to the tilt which will make an enormous difference in the way the hat looks on the head.”

Carly Interviews Meredith McMaster one of Brisbane’s most iconic milliners

You can meet mee Meredith and other Brisbane Milliners at the Brisbane Fashion Month Pop-Up 5th Oct to 5th Nov at Millinery Po Wintergarden. Brisbane Wi

Lastly, I wanted some keen tips for choosing the perfect ensemble for race day, Meredith (who is very accustomed to attending every racing event on the annual calendar) suggested the following; “Try your outfit on before the big day just to make sure that it all works well. Wear your shoes in before the day - there is nothing worse than having to wear uncomfortable shoes all day. Melbourne Cup day essentials include, your lippy, top up fragrance, water, sunglasses and most of all your sparkling personality so that it is a fun day…. oh and of course a drop-dead diva headpiece!!”

48-hour Adventure

ou have a 48 hr leave pass, what to do! Well, if you’re addicted to photography like me then you’ll pack an overnight bag, jump in the car and head off to take advantage of it! First stop was to spend a day at the new Bhavana Organic Farm and Cooking School located in the Byron Bay Hinterland on a 125acre farm overlooking rolling hills and mountain ranges, to indulge in a day of cooking wholesome organic food from the local area combined with education on health, wellness and nutrition. Bhavana cater for small groups that make the day intimate, fun, full of laughter and the food you learn to cook is just plain yummy. At the end of the day I left feeling rejuvenated and relaxed as I made my way back to Byron Bay for an overnight stay.

Sunday, I awoke feeling refreshed, had a quick morning dip in the ocean at Byron before heading off to Bangalow approx. 30 mins from Byron - where I was attending a foodie photoshoot, featuring Macadamia Nuts at the Bangalow Sample Food Festival. Each year this festival showcases the best food and wine from the region in an atmosphere perfectly fitting for a small country town. Photographing the

Macadamia Nuts was a hoot as there were about 10 of us trying to work out how to get the best angle out of a humble Australian Nut that is incredible versatile to eat and cook with. While I was at the festival I got wind of a Bison farm located about a 90min drive away, (I have a secret passion of photographing cows of any sort) so instead of heading home as planned I took a slight detour via Casino to the Aranyani Bison Adventure Tourist Park where you can camp, caravan or stay in a tipi, oh, and see a magnificent herd of Bison, something you don’t see in Australia very often. I was lucky enough to be taken on a tour of the herd where we got up close and personal to hand feed them. 48hrs, not enough, but a wonderful escape nevertheless. Good food, good wine, new friends made and Bison, who doesn’t love a Bison. So when you have some spare time I urge you to get out and explore, maybe the places I have been or seek your own adventures.

Fit & Healthy Lifestyle

or many, taking the steps to living a healthier and more active lifestyle can be extremely tough. It takes a lot of guts, determination, motivation and commitment to really change things around, especially if you’re trying to change a lifetime of bad habits or routine! It’s not an easy journey - if it was, everyone would be doing it – but, it can be done. Many of you are unaware that as well as being the Editor here at South City Bulletin, I’m also qualified Personal Trainer and run my own fitness business on the Southside. Throughout my time in the industry, I’ve noticed one of the biggest challenges ‘health and fitness’ beginners (or even people re-visiting the idea) face - is lack of motivation. We’ve all been there! Here are a few of my tips to help make your health and fitness journey a little bit easier and put that ‘motivational’ spring back in your step!

• CREATE A NEW ROUTINE - and put exercise in your priorities for the day. If you really want to get fit or change your lifestyle you have to make time! Look at your routine or schedule and start by pencilling in just 15mins a day of activity, then build up to 30mins and 1hr! • NO EXCUSES - I’m too busy, I don’t have the time or I’m too tired, are not good enough excuses to skip gym! If on-call surgeons, who’ve just come off a 15hr shift, can find the time to work out, so can you – even if it’s for just 30mins a day. • STOP SAYING ‘I’LL START TOMORROW’ OR ‘I’LL START FIRST THING MONDAY’ - and just start NOW. We all know when tomorrow rolls around you’ll have forgotten all about it or you’ll start the day off great and it’ll

Happy Achieving!

• FIND THINGS YOU LOVE DOING - If you don’t like cycling, don’t cycle. Find exercises you actually like doing, try swimming, dancing, running or weights – exercise doesn’t have to be boring. There are so many other things you can do, you just have to try them. • MEAL PREPARATION - it’s one of the easiest way to stay on track throughout the week and it takes no time at all. Set aside one hour on your day off and make up a whole bunch of healthy ready meals for the week. This will save you time and money! You’ll be one step ahead for the week! YouTube meal prep videos if you need some inspiration! • STAY POSITIVE – if you fall off the bandwagon it’s not the end of the world, simply jump back on!

Staying Private on Social Media

ast month, we took a look at a few of the most prominent social media platforms and outlined the features that distinguish them. If that article motivated you to join any of these social networks, or even if you’ve been a social media user for some time, it might be a good idea to brush up on the best ways to maintain your privacy on social media.

10 | October 2017

There are a number of reasons to maintain a high degree of privacy online, with the most obvious being that you never know who might see your activity. These days employers, lawyers and journalists rely heavily on social media activity to assist in their investigations and you never know how one innocent comment or photo may be perceived in the future. So, what can you do to ensure your social media activity remains private? The first and most important step is to change your default privacy settings on each individual social media platform to a level that you are comfortable with. Every social media platform has a different set of privacy features and limitations, so it’s important look at these before you begin to engage with each network to ensure you are comfortable with how your activity will be viewed by other users.

The next best piece of advice is one of the most obvious, but also one of the most difficult strategies for maintaining a private online presence, and that is to exercise a high degree of discipline in your social media activity. Before you post or link to anything online, keep in mind that employers, co-workers, friends and family members may end up seeing it one way or another.

For a comprehensive guide to updating your privacy settings on Facebook visit

HEALTH & FITNESS with Cameron Corish

Need an energy boost?

• Legs up the wall (Viparita Karani) is an inverted yoga restorative pose well known for energy boosts and improved circulation.

LACKING ENERGY? Feeling sluggish and tired? All you want to do is sleep, but youu have hav avee no time! This is sso o common in today’s society, but what can you do about it? Here are my top 10 tips to give energy vee you an ener rgy bboost ooostt iin n le lless ess than 5 minutes.

• Visualisation – Create a peaceful state and remember a time when you were bursting with energy. Visualise how you felt, thought and acted. Expand on this memory and really feel your energy levels increase. Link the energy boost to the memory and remember this memory every time you need a lift.

Energy Boosters • Water – with an estimated 70% of people chronically dehydrated this simple technique is so critical to transport your nutrients to your cells and flush away toxins. • Nutrient Supplementation – although any nutrition deficiency can lead to feeling sluggish the top energy nutrients are Vitamin B, Iron, CoEnzyme 10 and Iodine (specifically for thyroid dysfunctions). • Cold showers or ice baths have been used by athletes and will supercharge your nervous system into action. • Exercise is known for its health and energy benefits. Rather than hour long

Legs up the wall (Viparita Karani)

sessions, try short bursts. Some examples are; walking around the block, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) and even 30 secs of ‘fast and furious” movements. • Breathing - would it surprise you to know that an estimated 80% of people do not breathe correctly? Take 5 minutes out to concentrate on belly or diaphragmatic breathing, which will ensure more oxygen transfer via the lower parts of the lungs.

• Essential oils – try some peppermint oil to give you that instant hit.

Things to Avoid • Avoid stimulants like coffee, sugar and smoking. This flies in the face of popular practice, but it will combat the inevitable energy crash. • Avoid toxins (coffee and alcohol) and food intolerances. It takes a significant amount of energy for the body to eliminate these which will take away from the other activities that you want to do. Well done for having enough energy to finish reading these tips. Now try one, quick!! Core Health Coaching |

Job Streaming

TIPS FOR MAKING JOB JUGGLING WORK: 1. You must be proactive and self-motivated by nature

Why working in multiple fields is the latest employment trend

2. Accept that financial security may not always be possible

4. Be organised

sking someone what they do for a living would once produce a simple and straightforward answer. But these days it seems that the answer may not be as singular as it once was. According to employment analysts, the days of holding down a single job for decades and working 9 to 5 are rapidly coming to an end. This tradition is being rapidly replaced by a phenomenon called “job streaming”, where employees work simultaneously in multiple fields, for mixed hours, and regularly change and swap career paths. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, more than 750,000 Australians had two jobs in 2016. We are increasingly drawing income from multiple streams, and there’s no limits

3. Be flexible and understand that some days will mean longer work hours than others.

to what we might do. Some of the most varied occupations for job jugglers include acting, administrative work, freelance writing and personal fitness training. People with multiple jobs are seen as valuable to employers because they are usually highly organised, selfmotivated and proficient in technology.

What’s behind the trend? Workers these days want autonomy, and they enjoy working their own hours. Technology has largely made it possible to be our own boss because we can increasingly work from home in the hours that suit us. These days we are more aware of the importance of maintaining work/life balance, and working a number of part time jobs, whilst seeming contradictory to having

more free time, actually seems to enable us to etch out more time to ourselves. We are also far more aware of the importance of feeling a connection with the work we do. This means that rather than slogging away solely at a job that leaves us dissatisfied, many people will opt to take on additional work in an area where they are more passionate in order to add more fulfilment to their working life. Even if the second field has a lower income and less job security, we are increasingly happy to indulge our interests, while allowing more routine types of work to pay the bills and provide security.

BRISBANE CITY HALL AND KING GEORGE SQUARE are set to thrive to the beat and mystique of a Latin masquerade festival in October as Cuban musicians, street dancers, circus performers and lovers of all things South American celebrate this exotic and rhythmic culture. Held on October 7th, the 65 Roses Gala Ball is not only the chance to experience something distinctly unique in Brisbane, it also provides the ideal opportunity to support an important cause. All proceeds from the festivities will be directed to Cystic Fibrosis Queensland (CFQ) to help support close to 1000 Queenslanders living with this incurable disease. Starting with pre-ball drinks under the stars in King George Square, attendees will be entertained by traditional South American street dancers and circus performers before entering Brisbane’s iconic city hall and being transported to an Afro-Cuban night club for the formal masquerade ball. The live entertainment will be provided by more than 40 performers, including the Afro Cuban ensemble Chuckale, Rio Rhythmic Latin Dance

Academy salsa dancers, and the Flipside Circus. The evening will include a guaranteed unique auction and a host of fabulous prizes, including the opportunity to buy one of only 300 keys; one of which unlocks a box containing a $50,000 diamond and emerald ring. Those who fear they might be upstaged on the Latin dance floor need not fear. Rio Rhythmics are offering up to 30 registered guests a dance starter course for the bargain price of $69. These lessons normally sell for $138, so spaces are expected to be snatched up very quickly. Tickets are selling now for just $185 each, or $1,700 for a table of 10. In addition, a corporate table can be sponsored for as little as $2500. This will be a fantastic evening in the name of a good cause. Make sure you don’t miss out.

Win a family pass to Cirque Africa Brisbane – ready yourself for CIRQUE AFRICA, a kaleidoscopic, high performance show that celebrates the colour and culture of Africa, starring 22 performers from six African countries. It’s the show that won five stars at the Adelaide Fringe Festival this year, is acclaimed as the greatest performance experience from Africa and it will call the Roundhouse Theatre in Brisbane home for two thrilling weeks from October 24 to November 4! The show is uplifting, celebratory and joyous. It’s also a critically acclaimed acrobatic and dance experience, born of Ruddle’s desire to celebrate Africa’s colour and people with audiences all over the world. Amazingly skilled performers spin more than just bowls and hula hoops – they build a 10-person human pyramid and bring a whole new meaning

to pole dancing. Each high energy act and spectacular dance from different parts of Africa is performed to original, joyous heartbeat-driven rhythms of African music custom-composed for the show.

Cirque Africa will be on from October 24th to November 4th at Roundhouse Theatre. We have two family passes (4 tickets in a pass) to give away! Enter via our WIN page at
