Director’s Message This month I wanted to highlight our Junior REC Camp as it has become a national model across the country with National Recreation and Parks Association. Recently we were invited to NRPA’s national headquarters as presenters for a webinar; sharing our success story with 88 other communities that have signed on to the Commitment to Health initiative. Last spring we were awarded a $33,000 grant from NRPA, which works with the Walmart Foundation, supporting children’s health through “Commit to Health” by enhancing daily nutritional meals, snacks and physical activity during the summer. This grant supported our 8-week Jr REC Day Camp; for those who have completed K-6th grade, throughout the summer as the newly acquired funds helped this stellar camp to be infused with daily wholesome, local, organic nutritious lunches and snacks provided by the dedicated staff at South Burlington Nutritional Services. To encourage healthy eating education and habits, our department made a conscious decisions to include daily meals in the cost of camp, so every camper would benefit from the incredible meals and snacks served. Thank goodness for the good work of Nutritional Services Director, Rhonda Ketner, who was able to infuse her expertise of “food costing” to keep pricing affordable and quality exceptional? According to Ketner “A case of canned pears might cost $36. After draining and portioning it into ½ cup servings, it yields 50 servings. A case of fresh pears costs a bit more, but can be sliced in 150 servings. If you use food costing and averaging, you can often use fresher, more locally sourced products and actually save money. You have to do your research and be creative, but it can be done. For taste and nutrition fresher is always better!” In addition, kids had the opportunity to assist in planting and harvesting food weekly, through field trips to local farms and on site gardens. This hands-on down and dirty experience gave the children a good understanding of where their food comes from and why the local farm to table concept is so important to experiencing good nutrition to put into their bodies. Getting the kids involved is key! The more connected kids are to the food, the more willing they are to try it. If your hands touch the food in the growing and harvesting process, you are more likely to sample the fruits of your labor, rather than if it is just placed in front of you.” We have made a conscious decision to support a systematic change in our community by continuing to offer fresh local lunches/snacks to our Jr REC Campers “family style” setting offering Theme Weeks that match food options, physical activities, nutritional activities, art activities engaging our youth that filters into family living.

*Young at Heart Club meets each Wednesday, starting with a meal at 12 pm, followed by a free program at 1pm at City Hall.

Based on the success of Jr Rec Camp we have extended lunch/snack to our Lil’Tykes Campers, (ages 4-5) with the wholesome meal offerings included in registration fees. We cater to the pickiest of eaters and ensure there is something for everyone.

*Call by the Friday before to reserve your meal at 846-4108.

Warmly, Maggie
