New Beginnings for an Old Club BY KEVIN DEVLIN

If you’re interested in learning how to box, and perhaps start an amateur, or eventually realize a pro career in this sport, the South Boston Boxing Club is open to new membership. Southie has a rich tradition in the world of boxing. In 1987, Charlie “Calogero” LoGrasso, aka ‘Calo’ won the New England Golden Gloves (NEGG) open division title in Lowell. Joey DeGrandis won the NEGG crown in 1989. He subsequently fought in four world championship pro fights in three different weight classes. He won the USBA title in 1996. Jimmy LeBlanc won the NEGG championship in 1994.

(from left to right) Tommy Attardo and James “Jimbo” Curran are always ready to train those willing to learn the sport of boxing.

Ned Morrissey won the NEGG heavy weight title in 1991. Pat Michelle won the NEGG novice title in 1987. The list is

ZONING HEARING The Zoning Commission of the City of Boston hereby gives notice, in accordance with Chapter 665 of the Acts of 1956, as amended, that a public hearing will be held on, September 23, 2015, at 10:30 AM, in Room 900, Boston City Hall, in connection with a petition for the approval of the Development Plan for Planned Development Area No. 102 (the “PDA Plan”) and associated map amendment for 45W3 Project, 45 West Third Street, South Boston submitted by the Boston Redevelopment Authority. To meet a number of different housing needs, the residential units will be a variety of sizes. Access and egress for the partially below-grade parking garage will be at the northeast corner of the site, on West Third Street. long, indeed too long for this story. James “Jimbo” Curran and Tommy Lee are running the show at the Club. Other experienced trainers like Tommy Connors, Danny Long, John Curran, Jimmy Glynn, and Tommy Attardo, will also be at the gym, holding classes, training novices, as well as experi-

enced pugilists. Curran was instrumental in opening the South Boston Boxing Club in 1984. For eleven years, home was F and Silver Streets. Then it was onto the Muni gym for a few years, temporarily closed for a spell, only to find new life in 2003 at the Curley Recreation Center. Lee has been with the Club since 2003 and has brought in highcaliber USA boxers. He’s done a terrific job, and like Curran, is dedicated to the Club. Now, Curran and Lee are hoping to infuse new life into the Club and add to the list of champions. “The more the merrier,” Curran said. “We want to fill this Club up. Want to produce winners. We would love to produce an amateur or pro champion out of Southie. “We want to keep the young fighters busy,” he added. “We want them to have fun and enjoy the sport.”
