OUR HISTORY COMPANY OVERVIEW

In 2011, Winnipeg-based writer, Janet Adamana, started a small music blog entitled T up the V. The premise was to focus on independent and unsigned artists from all over North America. After almost six years and a new name, SOUND, PHRASE & FURY has grown from a small blog to a bi-monthly magazine focusing on independent artists and industry professionals from all around the world. Its popularity has grown sustainably over the years with a wider readership and requests for artist coverage and video premieres. The website and magazine provides a variety of articles including EP/ album reviews and interviews.

HISTORY +

“““An ode to all the artists who, through some miraculous strumming & binding of noisy instruments can create something that touches people.

After years of studying Communications in the cold Canadian city of Winnipeg, Janet Adamana did what most of her fellow graduates did not. Instead of toting piles of resumes, scheduling luncheons with industry professionals and flexing her newly acquired social skills at networking parties, the now SPF editor-in-chief packed up her car and hit the road. Armed with nothing more than a suitcase full of clothes, a back seat full of snacks and a heart filled with the need to escape the intimidating realm of job-hunting, Adamana headed to her first out-of-city concert.

This one $13 show sparked a two-year stint of constant concert chasing and traveling. Adamana attended show after show, in several different states and provinces. She experienced first hand the impact live music had, not only on herself but everyone involved, from fans to bands and everyone in between. Inspired by her travels, Adamana began T Up The V, a small music blog dedicated to promoting up-and-coming musicians from all over North America. The blog ran from early 2011 to 2012, when it was then renamed SOUND, PHRASE & FURY.

“I was in this spot where I didn’t really know what I was going to do, and just hearing that one song, it was like my entire future just opened up and I saw all the possibilities.”

The new moniker was inspired by New Zealand’s indie-pop troupe, The Naked and Famous. After a few less than encouraging months of low readership and next-to-no motivation to continue writing, Adamana stumbled upon the video of TNAF performing their poignant hit, “No Way.” There was something embedded within that performance that sparked a flame and fueled a clear vision of what SPF was to become. “The light bulb went on in my head and I thought, I know what I have to do,” recalls Adamana. “It inspired the whole concept behind the blog and eventually the magazine, which is an ode to all the artists who, through some miraculous strumming and binding of noisy instruments can create something that touches people and picks them back up. I was in this spot where I didn’t really know what I was going to do, and just hearing that one song, it was like my entire future just opened up and I saw all the possibilities.” Pumped with new-found inspiration Adamana worked relentlessly for an entire year building and melding the blog into the indie support system she envisioned. SPF opened its scope to artists and readers from all around the world.

A fan of old media, Adamana also wanted to create an ode to the ideas of the world she grew up in. She transferred the blog into a digital magazine, successfully melding favourable elements of the past and present. “I love the idea of blogs. They’re so convenient but I have always loved magazines,” says Adamana. “The glossy pages, the large photos and the creativity with colours and layout - Magazines are more than just words on a page, they are works of art.” SOUND, PHRASE & FURY magazine launched in January 2013. Not only did it become a structured way of promoting musicians and industry professionals, a scheduled routine for readers to follow, but it also became a fun and creative way to stay ahead of the curve and stand out on the web. After six years SOUND, PHRASE & FURY has grown into a comprehensive music news site and online magazine. It remains dedicated to encapsulating the essence of creating music, having passion and standing as an ode to the independent artists who write and create to leave an impact within
