THE PROBLEM Some of the features of the buildings and the problems that the architects solved through their design did not come across clearly in their presentation boards without them telling us afterwards. Therefore, we wanted to make sure the key features were highlighted and focus on how the buildings sit in the social fabric of the town.

OPUS PROPOSAL After an analysis of Poole, the aim of the project was to create a building that was aesthetically pleasing in an area that’s not particularly attractive.

PROPOSAL The design aim was to bring the two more desirable areas of Poole together.

OPUS DESIGN FEATURES

The central atrium is the commanding feature of the structure. It brings natural light into both the ground floor and basement as well as providing ventilation for the lobby area where people will gather. The brick work continues into the interior of the building, its inclusion in the auditorium enhances the sound dispersion.

KINGSLAND MUSIC ACADEMY PROPOSAL The railway network has a strong presence in Poole town. The designer used the railway bridges and arches as inspiration and as a consistent theme throughout.

PROPOSAL The aim was to create an open public market space using the arches, which opens out onto a new street and elevates the new building off the ground. This means that instead of the building acting as a barrier to members of the public who do not use the music school, the underside of the building is a cultural marketplace or arcade that connects the public to the building.

KINGSLAND MUSIC ACADEMY DESIGN FEATURES

Ground Floor- Open public market area or arcade, situated underneath the music hall, that provides a socialable space to explore culture. The arch design fits in with the local architecture and almost invites you in.

To explore the brick arch there were trial builds to test the design. After the trial arches were built they were deemed structurally stable and aesthetically pleasing. This informed the design, allowing the theme to continue through out the project.

KINGSLAND MUSIC ACADEMY DESIGN FEATURES
