MODERN CATERING

During my degree I have become passionate about concept creation and the development to bring it to life. I feel my skill in this could offer additional angles at working through projects. I have also developed a range of 3D rendering and technical skills that can offer various visuals and create a clear narrative to the work at hand. Throughout this portfolio, you will get a glimpse at some of the projects I have worked on.

01. THE SENSE OF CONNECTION Residential Home For The Blind

For this project, I had to create a concept for a residential home for the blind. I wanted to focus on bringing the blind community closer together. This is because within my research I found that the blind experience loneliness and lack of connection with others in their everyday life.

3

For ease of navigation within the houses, each room has a different floor texture to guide the residents to where the want to go: Bathroom is marble to represent the clean and cold Bedroom is carpet for comfort and warmth Kitchen/Livingroom is wood for casual and relaxing

4

The building shape is inspired by the ear; which represents communication and listening to one another, being there for each other. The circular rooms enhance acoustic quality and help user move around the room. Moreover, instead of creating an individual courtyard per house, I have created one shared courtyard to encourage socialisation between residents alike.

2

To further entice residents out of their houses I have set the location of this project in Bermeo, Spain. The idea behind this was that people have a pattern of staying indoors in bad weather, so the sunny climate should minimise this. Bermeo is a small town in Spain with beautiful scenery and is next to the sea. I thought this would be a relaxing, sensory filled area for the blind to hear, feel, and smell the surroundings.

Detection cameras in the room provide extra help in finding smaller items, like a remote control. Items that can easily be misplaced and forgotten about can be detected by the sensor and tell the user where the object is in the room through speech, when asked. These sensors are placed in every room including the hallway.

02. MODERN CATERING Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant

In this project I was assigned to create a restaurant which had its very own greenhouse for produce. My concept inspiration for creating the Iceland Greenhouse Restaurant came from the contours in the surrounding area, which I wanted to “bridge” together somehow. This led me to working with levels and contrasting shapes to make the building stand out whilst also keeping in line with Icelandic tradition. The building was further inspired by tradition turf houses with their triangular roofs and greenery. However, with this building, instead of being covered in greenery, the greenery will be inside the triangular roof. The greenhouse grows all kinds of vegetables, fruit and even edible flowers to create vegetarian recipes unique to Iceland. Food is taken from the greenhouse to the restaurant through crop drops in the greenhouse floor. Simple greenhouse benches are placed under the plants to allow good air circulation and for water to drain to prevents over-watering from drip-irrigation systems in soil. There is a head-house present in the greenhouse and this is where all the re-potting, cleaning, storage and general greenhouse management will take place.

03. NILS HOLGER MOORMANN Company Product Exhibition

For this project I was given a furniture company called Nils Holger Moormann and asked to design a small exhibition to showcase their products at The Salone del Mobile held 13-18th April 2021.

On the walls on my stand there will be a giant Nils Holder Moormann logo on one side with Moormann’s quote “Freedom has always been my highest priority”. On the other will be a map of Aschau im Chiemgau to show where they are based ad there will be information about the company and their values. This will all be done through direct printing.

My stand had to entice visitors in and accommodate the representatives to meet and do business with furniture importers and clients. The stand has to display a variety of the company’s products and inform visitors about the brand. The stand should also be built so that it can be re-used and rebuild on other venues and therefore should be flexible. My exhibition stand symbolises topography and Nils Holger Moormann’s value of locality. The shapes are based off the contour lines from the Aschau im Chiemgau hills, where furniture will be displayed per level. Moreover, as the company are very minimalist, I wanted to continue that aesthetic throughout the design through structure and materiality.

Throughout the play Charlie becomes attached to a boy named Hussain, originally Tadzio, and becomes inspired to finally transform into who he really is; a man. The more he meets Hussain, the more desire he has to brave his transition. I have tried to create this through imagery with the sets slowly developing colour and Charlie’s costume changes to show his transformation from woman to man.

I wanted to pick a place where homosexuality and transgender were seen as ‘wrong’ to make these taboos stand out. I chose Dubai for this as homosexuality and cross-dressing (which is what they would consider transgender to be) are illegal.

DEATH IN DUBAI

Scenography & Production Design

For this project I had to take the play ‘Death in Venice’ and develop it into a modern day version for The King’s Theatre, Edinburgh, taking into consideration set design, lighting and props. I decided that I wanted to keep the main taboo of homosexuality and make it a little more complex. I changed Aschenbach to a female to male transgender person named Charlie (meaning “free man”), so throughout the play the hetrosexuality changes into homosexuality.

These visuals show different stages in Charlie’s identity through the slow spread of colour in the sets, and also in Charlie’s costume changes throughout

05. EMBRACE KINDNESS Public Space, Seville

Short Section 1:500

For this project I was given a specific user group to observe and work out their archetype to then design a public space for them at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville. I worked out that my user group was the Caregiver archetype and I picked out the words “support” and “kindness” to go forward with my design. I was also given a point of public engagement which was to raise awareness. I chose to raise awareness of poverty in Spain as, in 2018, 26.1% of people were in poverty and with COVID-19 this has only gotten worse and increased. I based my design on support, connection and kindness and have shown this through the form of my concept. I created the design for a giant canopy to represent an arm giving an embrace, that extends through two areas of the site, connecting one another. The main courtyard area is to help those experiencing poverty or just in need of help sourcing employment. The square will be used to provide food for free (due to donations) for those in need of support to feed themselves and their families. those working the stalls will be previously unemployed, possibly homeless, people, giving them the opportunity of a wage and work experience for a few months. Visitors can sit in bamboo chairs shaped like ‘little hugs’ to chat and enjoy some food and beverages. 17
