SEASON OUTLOOK
MIKE TREPS MEDIA ROOM During a special ceremony preceding the OU-Kansas baseball game on April 19, 2003, Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione presented Mike Treps, former Sports Information Director and radio voice of OU athletics, with a commemorative baseball glove and his name is affixed to the media portion of the L. Dale Mitchell Park press box. The presentation and naming of the media room were made possible by a generous gift from Bob Stephenson to the athletics department’s “Great Expectations” campaign. For 27 years, Mike Treps was a fixture of Sooner athletics. High atop Owen Field on an autumn Saturday or just behind home plate throughout the spring, Treps was always a part of the action, which made fans a part as well. A 1956 OU graduate, Treps joined the university as the Director of Media Information in 1972. He moved to the athletics department in 1979 as the Director of Sports Information, wearing many hats along the way as well. He contributed to football radio broadcasts for 24 years and was the Sooners’ baseball voice for 17 years. Treps was on the broadcast team for four national champions - 1974, 1975 and 1985 football, and 1994 baseball. SOONER SPORTS PROPERTIES Sooner Sports Properties, LLC, is the multimedia rights holder for athletics at the University of Oklahoma. Sooner Sports Properties is a joint venture of Learfield Communications, Renda Broadcasting and Griffin Communications. Sooner Sports Properties produces game day radio broadcasts and special programming, syndicated on the Oklahoma Sooner Radio Network, which consists of nearly 40 stations across Oklahoma and surrounding states. The network blankets the state of Oklahoma and also delivers Sooner football, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball games to fans and alumni in neighboring states, as well. In addition to the broadcast programming for OU athletics, Sooner Sports Properties has exclusive rights for corporate sales for advertising, event sponsorships, game promotions and cross-retail promotions, advertising sales and vending of game programs and athletic periodicals, and the development of the official athletics Web site, SoonerSports.com, and the subscription-based premium content on Oklahoma All-Access. RADIO COVERAGE Sooner baseball will be broadcast live on KREF 1400 AM for the third straight season. More than 50 games are scheduled this season and will air via the Learfield Sooner Radio Network. KREF 1400 AM also serves as the flagship station for OU softball and provides Sooner Sports Talk Show programming. The broadcasts can also be heard live on the Internet via OU’s official athletics Web site, SoonerSports.com. Fans wishing to listen to the broadcasts must subscribe to Oklahoma All-Access, the site’s premium content section.
TOBY ROWLAND Sooner Sports Network | Play-by-Play | First year
Toby Rowland, who recently completed his first season as the play-by-play announcer for the University of Oklahoma football and men’s basketball teams, will begin calling the action for the Sooner baseball team in 2012. Rowland has been a reporter and anchor for KWTV (CBS) in Oklahoma City since 2000 and the morning talk show host on KREF radio in Norman since 2004. He joined the OU football broadcast as the sideline reporter in 2009 and previously helped provide extensive radio and television play-by-play work for Sooner men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball and wrestling. The two-time Emmy Award winner graduated from Southern Nazarene University in 1995. Rowland and his wife, Jenni, reside in Piedmont, with their three children; Trevor, Payton and Chloe. VISITING RADIO Each visiting radio broadcast team must contact Craig Moran of the OU Athletics Communications office at least one week in advance of the game it wishes to cover. Radio crews will be allowed to broadcast from the visiting radio booth located on the west side of the press box at L. Dale Mitchell Park. A courtesy line is provided, however, any broadcast crews needing additional phone lines or an ISDN line must make arrangements through the OU Telecommunications Office at (405) 325-2033.
