Sooner Alums Excel in Professional Fields

Many student-athletes make a four-year commitment to their chosen university, but those who choose the University of Oklahoma are making a lifetime commitment. Thousands of athletes have graced the Norman campus over the last 30 years, but one thing remains the same – they are always a Sooner. This couldn’t be more evident than in the women’s basketball program, which has produced many exceptional basketball players and even more outstanding women. From day one it is a priority of OU head coach Sherri Coale to develop well-rounded individuals. Add in the nationally-recognized efforts of the OU academic counseling staff and the end result has been tremendous.Coale and her staff make it a priority that former Sooners remain connected to the women’s basketball program because, without them, OU wouldn’t be the strong and growing program it is today. Through joint efforts of Coale, OU’s development office and the alumni, Oklahoma hosts an alumni reunion every three years. This presents a unique opportunity for OU to give back to its alumni and for the alumni to give back to the school that sent them on their journey.

t Shannon Selmon-Carter // 1997-2001

Selmon-Carter is the director of the Shine Foundation in Norman, Okla. While the foundation is housed in Norman, it is making its biggest impact in Liberia. Formed in November 2005, Shine’s first project was building a school at Rainbow Town Orphanage near Gbarnga. Liberia, which is in West Africa, has been torn apart by a 14-year civil war. The result of that devastation is that children account for 50 percent of the population. A large portion of that group has lost their parents and their homes due to the fighting. The Foundation, through the help of volunteers and donations, is attempting to bring some of these necessities back into their lives.
