Shannon Selmon-Carter is the director of the Shine Foundation in Norman, Okla. While the foundation is housed in Norman, it is making its biggest impact in Liberia. Formed in November 2005, Shine’s first project is building a school at Rainbow Town Orphanage near Gbarnga. Liberia, which is in West Africa, has been torn apart by a 14-year civil war. The result of that devastation is that children account for 50 percent of the population. A large portion of that group has lost their parents and their homes due to the fighting. The Foundation, through the help of volunteers and donations, is attempting to bring some of these necessities back into their lives.
