GAME BROADCASTS

The Sooner Sports Radio Network blankets the state of Oklahoma and also delivers Sooner football games to fans and alumni in neighboring states. The flagship stations for the network are 50,000-watt KOMA, AM 1520 and KRXO, 107.7 FM in Oklahoma City. In Tulsa, the Sooner Sports Radio Network broadcasts may be heard on 50,000-watt KFAQ, AM 1170.

Network broadcasts for all Sooner football games will begin 90 minutes prior to kickoff with a call-in segment featuring popular color analyst Merv Johnson. The show includes interviews with coaches and players and, of course, a pre-game conversation with Bob Stoops. Following each game, the Sooner Wrap-up features game highlights, player comments and a postgame interview with Stoops and his assistant coaches.

These three stations, along with more than 30 statewide affiliates, also carry Sooner Sports Talk with Bob Stoops on Tuesday nights, the Coaches Corner with Sooner Coordinators on Thursday evenings and Sooner Sports Today, which airs twice daily, five days per week throughout the season. Bob Barry, now in his second lengthy stint as the radio voice of the Sooners, is synonymous with sports in Oklahoma as a sports broadcaster in the state for 48 years.

Barry began broadcasting Norman High School football and basketball games in 1956. In 1961, he won a tryout over 13 other broadcasters to become the play-by-play commentator for University of Oklahoma football and basketball, a position he held from 1961-72. From 1973-90, he was the play-by-play announcer for Oklahoma State football and basketball, but returned to the OU microphone in 1991. The list of awards and honors won by Barry is impressive. He has been elected by his peers as Oklahoma’s Sportscaster of the Year 15 times, voted the Oklahoma Gazette Newspaper Top Sportscaster in a readers’ poll, named in 1998 to the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame, the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame in 1999. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and he served on many Norman boards as well. Barry, who resides in Norman, joined KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City in 1966 and was the long-time sports director. He remains on the station’s sports staff, but handed the sports director’s reins to his son, Bob, Jr., in 1996. Barry’s partner in the broadcast booth is color commentator Merv Johnson, now in his 26th year on the football staff. He served as a Sooner assistant coach from 1987-97 and has been the director of football operations and a special assistant to the athletics director since 1998. Johnson has been on the radio broadcasts since 1999. His complete bio appears on page 104. Sideline commentary is provided by Mark Rodgers, who is now in his third season with the network. Rodgers is the sports director at KOCO-TV (ABC) in Oklahoma City.
