MORE THAN ONE MILLION IN THE STANDS For the first time in the program's history, more than one million fans watched the Oklahoma football team play in person last season. Total attendance for the 14 games of the 2003 season was 1,051,631 which included seven home contests at the recently expanded Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. Oklahoma shattered the previous best for average attendance at home for a season in 2003. Although official capacity is listed at 81,207, OU averaged 83,202 fans which was 7,818 more per game than the previous best of 75,384 during the 2001 season. The past five seasons all rank at the top of the list for average home attendance for good reason. During that span, the Sooners have been virtually unbeatable in Norman, going a remarkable 30-1 (.968) under head coach Bob Stoops. The largest crowd ever to watch a game in the history of the state of Oklahoma jammed Memorial Stadium on November 1, 2003. The Sooners romped past rival Oklahoma State, 52-9, in front of 84,027. The Sooners also set attendance records at two other sites: 54,215 at Folsom Field in Boulder against Colorado and 79,451 at the 2004 Nokia Sugar Bowl against LSU. The crowd was the largest for a sporting event in the history of the Lousiana Superdome.
