Gord Phillips “needs to play” and he will
A
s most of you may be aware, Gord Phillips, who was to have played our October coffee house, had to cancel at the last minute due to being involved in a motor vehicle accident. We are happy to say that Gord has recuperated and has been rescheduled as our Dec. 17 featured performer. We anticipate that this month’s coffee house will have a bit of a Yuletide twist from both our open stage and our featured performer. Gord is a passionate and powerful entertainer. His blues infused, folk rock style has been compared with the likes of early Rolling Stones and Steve Earle combined. Gord enjoys connecting with the audience and when the opportunity arises he takes the time to give the back story to his songs. It’s his way of making each performance feel like a unique experience for the audience. A natural on stage there is always some banter between songs. Many have commented on how comfortable he is when the show is on. Solo or with The Assimilators Gord puts on a great show. His is a versatile and eclectic sound guaranteed to get your attention and keep it, with driving original tunes and interactive vibe, giving folk a sweet rock influenced edge. His style
has tones of Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello and Neil Young, all big influences for Gord. Sooke is home. In Victoria and the surrounding area, Gord Phillips & the Assimlators are around every corner, playing any venue from clubs to pubs, coffee shops and theatres. “You will be Assimilated. And it will be good.” Gord’s song writing is versatile and unique. It is inspired by life. One song will be a rockabilly tune (Sinner for a Day), the next maybe some straight ahead rock (Market), or a wicked upbeat Rhythm & Blues (Punks), taking it down and giving a jazz feel. (Pypers Flower Song), and finishing off with a combination of all that (Oldman War) to make the Assimilation complete. A night with Gord onstage is a journey all will enjoy. “Music is my religion” says Gord, “I need to play.” Gord has garnered local success in B.C. with the release of his album, Looking Glass in 2010. The single, Sooke Hiway, and Movin’ Out West have received radio play on CBC, CFUV, CFAX, 100.3 The Q and many other stations across B.C. The Sooke Hiway was also performed by the Sooke Community Choir with Gord live in May 2011. He is very busy in the community writing and working on the music

video for the Sooke Hiway. A new album is in the works along with an interactive kids’ song book inspired by an otter. There are
many sides to Gord and when you see him live a combination of all those come together in song. Check his website,
www.gordphillips.com for tour dates near you. We are happy to have Gord Phillips as our feature performer this Saturday, Dec. 17. Please come out and join us for an evening of inspiring original music from this local talent and that chance to help us celebrate the festive season.. It all happens at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1962 Murray Road. Doors open at 7 p.m., with our open stage at 7:30 and our feature at 9. Dave Gallant

SAILA VENUS DELAURA HULL 1977 October 8 to 2011, November 14 ~ age 34
The relentless black dogs of depression overwhelmed our Saila V and despite her valiant two year struggle she succumbed to the torture of mental illness. It is not only a tremendous loss to family and friends but to the Earth as well, as she was a very conscientious steward of the Earth. Saila had a formidable intellect achieving "straight A's" all through all levels of school and earning a Diploma in Technology in Environment Science from Camosun College, a Bachelor of Science of Environmental Technologies from Royal Roads University with Honours, and her Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Victoria. She had a varied career in government at both the provincial and municipal levels and was very respected by her peers for her skills and accomplishments. Saila was predeceased by her identical twin, Mariah in 2005, and sister Sabrita in 1975. She is survived by her two sisters Christine Wilson, and Darci Iannuccilli and nieces Malia and Kiana in Montana. She will be missed by her partner Adam Glen in Ucluelet; her father Ralph Hull in Sooke; her mother Katie Stewart in Duncan; her young cousins Tyra, Sierrah, and Georiana in Duncan; plus many Stewart relatives in Duncan, Surrey, and the Ottawa area; and Adam's family, Heather and Pat Corbett and Sarah Glen of Vernon; and her legion of beloved friends. A celebration of Saila's life and reception will be held at 1 pm on Sunday, the 18th of December at the Prestige Oceanfront Resort at 6929 West Coast Road in Sooke. Please dress for the weather because after the reception we will attend a marine ceremonial at Ralph's home and wharf at Sooke Ocean Resort at 6669 Horne Road in Sooke. We are very grateful for the years we had Saila and her sisters in our lives, but it won't be the same. Such a terrible loss to everybody but her spirit and expertise will carry on forever. Thumbs up, OK ~ Saila V.
