Editorial Dear Readers: If we did not seize the hour and publish the first issue of Lead Up back in September 2011, you would not be holding this Issue 5 today. Did we have enough advertisers? No. Were we willing to lower our standards and accept just any advertiser? No. Did we have any idea whatsoever if you would enjoy reading it? No. But we

seized the hour and have no regrets whatsoever. Very often in life, things are not lined up perfectly for us to make choices, do a particular job as we imagined etc. but we have to just go for it and believe things will work out. I know that sounds risky, but if you are not taking risks daily, you are not living, you are not growing and worse yet, you are not dreaming. We just launched Lead Up in the Middle East region with the first issue coming out there in the next six weeks. Are we

nervous? Yes. Are we ready? As ready as we can be. Will the youths love it out there as much as you? We do not know. But once again we are about to seize the day and take a leap of faith fearlessly knowing if we fail, it will simply be a road map to a better way. So we encourage you to keep moving and pushing your boundaries. You will never truly be able to see what you are capable off if you do not leap... So follow our lead and seize the day! CSR vs.

PHILANTHROPIC ACTIVITIES Where do you fit in?

It’s hard to find a major company that isn’t talking about, writing about or reporting on how they take their corporate social responsibility seriously. However, many companies make a common mistake of misinterpreting corporate philanthropy for CSR activities. Here’s how to tell the difference:

COOL

CSR ALERT!

Corporate philanthropy is strictly an executive decision, with only senior management deciding when and how much to donate, or to whom to award grants. Many philanthropy programs donate to specific charities or award grants to individual nonprofit groups. . It might also refer to company-wide fundraising efforts or pledge drives, or to toy donation or blood donation drives, for example. The general public, and even the company’s own customers, may not be directly affected. While corporate philanthropy may be used to enhance a company’s image, it is generally separate from a corporation’s long-term business strategy, and has less effect on the organization’s bottom line and ability to attract customers. Corporate philanthropy’s primary benefit may be on creating goodwill among the community it serves.

Corporate social responsibility involves a

clear vision that focuses on what areas a company is keen to be involved in, the kind of budgets that can be allocated to impact

this area and the manner and method of getting employees involved. Unlike philanthropy, employee involvement is key to CSR. For corporate social responsibility to succeed, every employee and every department must play a role. Corporate social responsibility often affects a wider range of people than philanthropy. It actually can impact the Buyer or Customer’s decision to use your company. Corporate social responsibility tells the world about a company’s overall attitude toward its neighbors, customers, even the environment. For example, a company might designate a portion of all profits for charitable donations, education programs or even its own nonprofit efforts. CSR can include things like the methods a company uses to secure ingredients or materials, the way it conducts business in and with other countries or even its own employee policies. A good corporate social responsibility program attempts to merge two goals: adhering to high ethical standards while also enhancing profits. With CSR programs, companies find a way to integrate the needs of the community with programs and features that also boost its bottom line. For example, a company may donate a portion of every item sold to a specific charity, helping the charity while simultaneously encouraging people to buy its product or service.

The cucumber is very much a part of our daily diet. Salads are absolutely unimaginable without this cool green fruit to crunch on! But did you know it can also be one of the most cost-effective options for your skin diet? Its cooling and hydrating properties make it one of the most wonderful ingredients for nourishing your skin and catering to your beauty needs. Have you ever spent the day outdoors only to realize that you forgot to wear sun screen and now your beautiful skin has been burned from the sun’s rays! Well fear not, the next time this happens, you can use some of Dr. Worm’s favourite natural home remedies. Try any of these...

COOL AS A CUCUMBER Hello Nutrition Explorers! It’s me, Dr. Worm, back with another segment on fruits and vegetables that can be used to treat any healthrelated complaint. Remember last month we talked about lemons and how they can be used to treat acne and the flu? Well today we are going to look at some of the things that cucumbers can do…

Using a juicer, extract the juice of one cucumber, and add one tsp glycerin (Glycerin is a neutral, sweet-tasting, colorless, thick liquid which freezes to a gummy paste and has a high boiling point. Glycerin can be dissolved into water or alcohol, but not oils.) Store this in the refrigerator for up to three days. Apply it to your skin using a soft linen cloth or a cotton ball to soothe the itching. Alternately, for immediate relief from a sunburn you can dip cucumber slices in freshly-squeezed lemon juice and apply to the affected area. You can also make a soothing paste by blending cucumber slices and then adding honey, yoghurt and a half-cup of oats (people with dry skin can use milk instead of yoghurt). Leave in the refrigerator until chilled, and then apply the cold paste to the sunburnt area. Wait until the paste has completely dried on your skin and then rinse with clean water. You can use any leftover cucumbers by slicing into chunks, adding salt, black pepper, a dash of lemon juice and a hint of olive oil. After refrigerating for 1 hour, you have a nice cucumber salad... Yummy! So there you have it Nutrition Explorers... Another soothing natural home remedy using fruits and vegetables from Dr. Worm! Keep on exploring on the different ways you can use cucumbers. Until next month!

LIFE LESSONS

CARPE DIEM Today, many will awaken with a fresh sense of inspiration. Why not you? Today, many will open their eyes to the beauty that surrounds them. Why not you?

Have you ever noticed that some people see everything as possible and others make excuses or simply say I can’t when confronted with something new? Guess what, if you think you can then you will, if you think you can’t then chances are you won’t! It really is that simple. Rather than trying to prove it let me give you a real example! BY Nigel J. ajesh Durbal was born with bones missing in both legs and a very underdeveloped right arm. In his first year of life both of his legs were amputated, so he effectively became a triple amputee with just one full limb; his left arm.

YES I Can!

During his early life he struggled with his disability but in 2009 he made an incredible decision. He chose to demonstrate to himself and the world what was possible with an energy, determination and a level of self belief that is astounding, to say the least. He spent hours and hours building and modifying false limbs,

Just one year after setting his goal, a year of training days and nights, of building and maintaining his prosthetics, he competed in and finished the Hawaii Ironman race. Never heard of Ironman? It is a 2.4 mile ocean swim followed by a 112 mile cycle ride, followed by a full 26.2 mile run. Rajesh completed this in 14 hours 19 minutes and 13 seconds. Now that is what I call ‘yes I can’ attitude!
