Looking for their first victory of the 2010 season, the Otters have been outscored 18-4 and outshot 132-37 in their first seven matches. Following three consecutive losses, Cal State Monterey Bay earned a hard-fought 2-2 tie with Cal State East Bay on Sunday. Their schedule hasn’t helped much either, as two losses came at the hands of nationally-ranked opponents in Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A. Four different Otters have scored a goal this season. The Seawolves and Otters split their season series in 2009, as each team claimed victory on their respective home fields. SSU leads the all-time series at 8-3-1.

The Gators earned their first conference victory on Friday in a 1-0 triumph over Cal State East Bay, before falling to UC San Diego last Sunday. San Francisco State has outscored its opponents by a narrow margin at 13-11, including a 9-3 margin in the second half and overtime. Sasha Chalak leads the attack on offense for the Gators with four goals while Antonio Ugarte and Edgar Villagrana have added two apiece. Sonoma State swept the season series last season and has won the last six matches between the two schools, dating back to 2007. in the Marcus Ziemer era, Sonoma State is 27-7-4 against San Francisco State.

Seawolves Swept in Weekend Series at Stanislaus, Chico Cam Vickers sent home a nice shot from 18 yards out to give Sonoma State the early 1-0 lead, but Cal State Stanislaus scored two unanswered goals, including a lazer off the foot of the Warriors’ Jio Santana with just over four minutes remaining in regulation to ensure a 2-1 victory on Friday night under the lights at Warrior Stadium. On Sunday, Chico State’s Ferid Celosmanovic scored two goals, his team-leading fifth and sixth of the season, and goalkeeper James Stroud held Sonoma State’s high powered offense off the scoreboard, as the Wildcats defeated the Seawolves 2-0 in a matchup of nationally-ranked teams. It was the first time all season long that the Seawolves were outshot in a contest, falling 9-7 in that category. Sonoma State averages 17.38 shots per game through eight matches this season. The Last Time... ...the Seawolves lost two consecutive regular season road matches was back on Aug. 24-26, 2006 at Simon Frasier (0-1) and at Seattle University (0-3). The last time the Seawolves lost two consecutive CCAA road matches dates back to Sept. 12-15, 2000 when Sonoma State lost at Chico State (1-2) and at Grand Canyon (0-1). Lighting Up The Scoreboard In just the first eight matches of the season, Sonoma State has scored 19 goals, tied with three other teams for the most in the CCAA so far this season. Ten of the Seawolves’ 19 goals have been scored by just two players -- junior Trevor Hurst and freshman Taylor Varnadore, both with five apiece. And The Assist Goes To... Junior Cam Vickers handed out an assist on all three goals scored by the Seawolves in the 5-3 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 10, moving him past Andrew Bailey and in to fifth place on the all-time list. Vickers has 24 career assists (and a team-leading five this season). The all-time record of 33 assists is held by former Seawolf Eric Lafon.

Freshman Phenom Earns CCAA Player of the Week Award - Sept. 6-12 Taylor Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos Junior Cam Vickers scored the lone Sonoma State goal in the 2-1 loss at Cal State Stanislaus on Friday (9/10) and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes on on Friday at Warrior Stadium. The Seawolves fell Sunday (9/12). He becomes the first men’s soccer player to earn the weekly award since former Seawolf to 3-3 in conference play. Eric Lafon did so during the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008 and is also the first freshman to grab the award since 2005.

2010 SONOMA STATE MEN’S SOCCER Weekly Release • September 28, 2010

2010 Sonoma State Men’s Soccer Roster

Head Coach Marcus Ziemer The 2010 season will mark Marcus Ziemer’s 20th as head coach of the men’s soccer team at Sonoma State University.

# 1 2 3 A two-time all-conference 4 performer for Sonoma State in 5 the 1980’s, Ziemer has compiled a 258-112-39 record over the past 6 19 years. Though his squads have 7 had success year in and year out 8 (just one sub .500 season since 1991), the Seawolves 9 of the last four seasons have taken winning to a whole 10 different level. Since 2006, Ziemer has led the Seawolves 11 to a 48-6-6 record in CCAA play. Overall, the Seawolves are 65-16-12 over the last four seasons, with three NCAA 12 13 Tournament appearances and a NCAA West Region 14 Championship in 2007. 15 Since coming to Sonoma State, Ziemer has been named 17 his conference’s coach of the year six times, the last 18 coming in 2007. He is also a two-time regional coach of 19 the year and in 2002, he was named national coach of the year in 2002 after leading the Seawolves to their first 20 21 national championship. 22 Ziemer began his coaching career in 1989, assisting head 23 coach Peter Reynaud with the SSU men’s squad. In 1991, 24 after Reynaud left to concentrate on the women’s team, Ziemer was promoted to head coach and results came immediately. Ziemer led his squad to the NCAA championship game and he was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for his efforts. Under Ziemer, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has won six conference titles and has a record of 190-60-20 in conference play. In 1988, Ziemer spent three weeks in England earning an English Football International Preliminary Badge. He earned his USSF “A” license the following year. A fixture in local soccer circles, Ziemer and his three brothers (Andrew, Benjamin, Christopher -- all former SSU players) have run the Ziemer Brothers Soccer Camps for over 20 years, educating thousands of youth soccer players.

Head Coach: Marcus Ziemer (Sonoma State, 1988; 20th season) Assistant Coaches: Shawn Percell, Benjamin Ziemer, Tim Maycock, Ben Langwith, Andrew Jones, Neil Turnbull National Spotlight On Sonoma State After dropping both games last weekend, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team has falled out of the national rankings. The Seawolves disappeared from the NSCAA poll this week after being ranked 22nd last week, 23nd in the preseason poll and 25th in week one. Non-Conference Success Since the start of the 2008 season, Sonoma State has a 12-1-1 record against non-conference opponents, outscoring them 38-13 in those 14 matches. The only loss came at the mercy of Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 12, 2008 in a 2-1 match in Belmont. The last time the Seawolves lost a non-conference match at home was back on Aug. 26, 2007 in a 2-1 loss to Seattle University. Seawolves Look to Defend North Division Title Winners of the North Division for the past six seasons, the Sonoma State men’s soccer team will look to defend its title again in 2010. Armed with seven returning starters, countless other key returners and a talented group of newcomers, the Seawolves are primed and ready for a run at the North Division and the CCAA title in November.
