The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper for the city of Beaverton, Oregon. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 with the help of the city and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, just over one year later, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a huge cross section of the city from shopping malls like Washington Square and Cedar Hills Crossing to public entities such as the police and ďŹ re departments, the Visitor’s Association (WCVA), the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Committee and the park district (THPRD) to name a few.

ello, my name is Bowzer and I’m a blue Italian Mastiff American Bull Dog. But that’s not what makes me special. What makes me special is my pops, Mark Mangold. He owns and operates Green Planet Tree Care but many of you may remember it by its old name, Mangold’s Tree Service. He started this new and improved company in order to emphasize his commitment to quality service, affordable prices and earth-friendly practices. And to top it off, he brought me on board to supervise! We’ll also give

you free wood chips and firewood, as much as you need. Just ask. Yup, I learned at a very young age that being nice to your neighbors is a good thing and it can even get you a good scratch behind the ear. Who doesn’t like that! So if you need tree help, please give me a call. I’ll say woof but Mark will give you good advice. You can even take a picture with your phone and text it to him. Odds are, he’ll analyze your problem and get you a solution right there on the spot. Yes, he’s that good. You

can also bring him a problem stick and he’ll diagnose it before throwing it for you… really, really far too. He’s so much fun. So for me, if that doesn’t make him the best tree doctor in town, I don’t know what does! Hope to meet you soon.

e made a little stop by the Lolich's Family Farm on Father's Day. I wanted to get VRPH ORFDO KRQH\ , KHDU WKDW LW KHOSV Ĺ…JKW DOOHUJLHV DQG VR , ZDQWHG P\ KXVEDQG to give it a try. I was also happy to see that they had fresh local cherries. Really nice, big and beautiful ones. Of course I just had to get some. Summer is here and I like to keep a supply of homemade fruit/veggie popsicles in the freezer at all times for our little toddler and his friends. Fruity cherry Popsicles? Sure, why not! I was also able to use the honey too. I made a Honey Simple Syrup, instead of the sugar version, to add in the popsicle mixture. This is really nice cold healthy treat for the whole family especially on a nice hot Summer day.

Cherry Popsicles (with Honey Simple Syrup) This should make about 8-10 popsicles. I ďŹ lled 6 big popsicles and 4 small ones (I only had these many popsicle molds) and still had some mixture left so I threw in some ice cubes into the blender and got a nice smoothie out of it too. With over 20 years’ experience serving great food and drinks, we’ve decided to make the change to include a wide variety of pizzas to the mix. Why pizza? Simple. We wanted the challenge of creating some of the best pies in town and at a reasonable price by using our signature recipes brought to us by our very own pizza chef with more than 15 years’ experience crafting pizzas in New York & Connecticut. He's taken all this knowhow and creativity and put it into an incredible pizza pie. We believe we have the best pizza around! Try it. We think you will agree. However, if you are looking for pub grub we have that too. ould I take sweet locally grown strawberries and FRPELQH LW ZLWK WKH WDQJ\ ņDvor of Rhubarb? Add a swirl of strawberry butter cream compote and this one became a hit! Easier creations were my Red Velvet cakes topped with big juicy blackberries or the ever popular Double Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge. Is

your mouth watering yet? Thinking back to my childhood love of Shirley Temples, I came up with a Cherry Almond-Vanilla smothered in a maraschino cherry butter cream frosting. They come in mini sizes so it's okay to eat more than one! The newest addition to my line up is the Chocolate Mocha Fudge which is dusted with coffee grounds and smells like you've just walked into a sweet, chocolate coffee shop. And yes, you can have this one along with your morning cup of jo.

Fresh ingredients are important to me so I make sure they ďŹ nd their way into my cakes. Some day I hope to have a storefront, but until then, please ďŹ nd me at the Beaverton Farmers Market.

ost of us are aware that we could be making better choices when it comes to diet and exercise. I often hear people say that they have no idea where to start when it comes to improving their health. The good news is that making the necessary changes to attain optimal wellness is not hard. It just takes education and a willingness to keep trying. Making small changes will allow you to build your new lifestyle one step at a time. This will help to ensure your success in maintaining your new habits over the long term. A Registered Dietitian can give you the support needed to improve your health by helping to design a diet plan that works; while offering much needed moral support as you go through the process of healing yourself through dietary changes. Angela Hermes, RD, LD, CLT is a Registered Dietitian who is located in downtown Beaverton. She loves to help people to reach their health and ďŹ tness goals. t Nut-Tritious Foods I set out to build a better, more nutritious, nut butter. Always a fan of nuts & seeds, I observed that most nut butters were based on the same old peanuts or almonds and some form of processed sugar to make the product interesting. Ever since Grover Washington Carver made peanut butter popular in 1916, most peanut nut butters (technically a legume) have not evolved far from the original formulae – nuts and some form of sugar. I thought ‘nuts to that’, - dump the processed VXJDUV DQG DņDWR[LQV Ä ZKR QHHGV them) - lets feature nut butters with nutritionally dense ingredients like VXQņRZHU VHHGV DQG RUJDQLF ņD[ seed meal! $QRWKHU EHQHĹ…W IURP RXU nut butter processing is that we COLD-PROCESS and don’t use heat to get our nut butter into the tub. Heat will oxidize the healthy fats (poly- & mono-unsaturated) and make them more like a saturated fat! Most all jar nut butters have been heat processed – you can tell by the ‘nutcrete’ in the bottom of the glass jar. To make sure we have the very best nut butters on the market – we craft our own weekly. No large factories and no co-packers! They could never duplicate the love we put into our fresh roasted & ground nut butters! Every batch is personally crafted by our dedicated nutheads. The same nut-heads that work our farmers markets and also do in-store demos – so we know what we are talking about. We are the foodies favorite nut butter! Just ask our addicts, er customers. Go Nuts!

in Umatilla County, Oregon and in Iowa before transferring to Willamette University in Salem, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1885. After a year or so traveling through Arizona, he established a practice in Beaverton, one that would continue until his death. When he arrived, the small farming community was beginning to grow, but wasn’t yet an incorporated city. It’s unclear when he met Lottie Danks, daughter of town wagon maker and blacksmith Augustine Danks1 and his wife Mary. In a town with a population of about 250, their paths very likely crossed many times. On October 20, 1889 he and 20 year-old Lottie married at home of her widowed mother. W.C. Ward of East Portland performed the ceremony, witnessed by W.E. Squires and Eva Milner. The Robinson’s house (1887) and pharmacy (1893), which Lottie managed, still stand on Broadway Street.

Dr. Robinson took an active role in fraternal, professional, and civic matters, joining the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masons. He was, in fact, one of seven Master Masons seeking a charter to establish a Beaverton Lodge in 1891. When their request was granted that summer, he was elected Worshipful Master of Beaverton Lodge Number 100, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, a position he held at various times until 1906. His keen abilities led to leadership roles with the Oregon State and Washington County Medical Associations, as well as Beaverton city councilor. The allopathic2 physician’s cause of death on March 22, 1915 was listed as heart disease. The New and Improved Elsie Stuhr Center On the Road with Beaverton Lodge

By the Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee

I

f you are like me, you drive down the same streets, see the same people and shop at the same stores. The problem with this is, I also pass by many places without knowing just what they're about. Let me share the great experience I had at one such place. The Elsie Stuhr Senior Center in Beaverton is easy to miss as you drive to the library and even if you did see it, you might think it was some sort of care facility. After getting involved in the Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee however, I soon realized how wrong I

was and that was before the head to toe remodel! 0\ Ĺ…UVW LPSUHVVLRQ ZKHQ , walked into the building was the same as if I had walked into a niceHotel lobby or country clubâ€?: Spacious, inviting and warm with beautiful artwork displayed in glass cases that I later found out were made by members who attend classes at the center. My escort - and delightful guide - was the Center Supervisor, Linda Jo Enger, who enthusiastically showed me around greeting almost everyone she passed by name. That in itself impressed me greatly (as I'm known to forget even names in my own family!). Her energy and positive attitude were contagious as she took me from room to room. She is a proud representative of Elsie Stuhr and she offered the “warm and fuzzyâ€? that is lacking in most facilities. Who knew? Elsie Stuhr offers ping pong, pool, cards, dancing,

art classes wood carving, knitting, music, computer classes, theater art, writing, camera shops, gardening, yoga, pilates, tai chi and so much more. What really blew me away though was the workout room. Headed by Diane Brice, the Fitness Specialist, this room is inviting and complete with the latest equipment. The only thing it lacks is YOU!

“June is gone and I didn’t do a thing... those road trips at Beaverton Lodge sure sound fun!

our July Beaverton Hero. Mary has a wonderful story and a powerful message for those looking to make a difference but don’t know where to start. She lives by the motto of “Learn, Earn and Return. At the beginning of your career, you are in the beginning phase and learning. The majority of your career, you are in your earning phase and then the last part is the Return. What you can give back to society. Mary has been a hairstylist since 1983. However, due to a chronic allergy to Hair dye, she had to retire in 2008. She originally started volunteering with St. James Episcopal Church, where she helped provide meals to the homeless families. She realized how much she missed cutting hair and asked Heidi if there was an opportunity for her to help the families with haircuts. Haircuts can be an expense that exceeds many low income family’s budgets and Mary’s offer of free haircuts were met with overwhelming support and gratitude. They turn the laundry room

She even has a style book for the moms who can choose a new hairstyle for themselves as moms are usually the ones who will put themselves last on their list and neglect themselves for their families. I asked Mary what advice she has to people who are looking to make a difference but don’t know how and where to begin. Her advice is that there are many avenues to help out besides donating clothing or food to the Good Neighbor Center. There a r e
