The Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper for the city of Beaverton, Oregon. Cedar House Media published the ďŹ rst edition in April of 2011 with the help of the city and the Farmers Market. That ďŹ rst issue was 16 pages. Today, just over one year later, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a huge cross section of the city from shopping malls like Washington Square and Cedar Hills Crossing to public entities such as the police and ďŹ re departments, the Visitor’s Association (WCVA), the Senior Citizen’s Advisory Committee and the park district (THPRD) to name a few.

eaverton High School freshman Gigi Stoll may only be 15 years old, but she’s already making a name for herself in the world of golf. One week after winning the high school state title at Beaverton, Gigi 6WROO TXDOLÂżHG IRU WKH 8 6 :RPHQÂśV Open by winning a sectional in northern California in the spring. That gives her a chance to see how her golf game stacks up against the best golfers in the world. 4XDOLI\LQJ IRU WKH 8 6 2SHQ *LJL Stoll said, “doesn’t seem real,â€? but her father said he has seen it coming. “You could see right from the start she had unbelievable natural talent,â€? Mike Stoll said. Gigi Stoll started playing at the age of ÂżYH \HDUV ROG EXW VKH ZDVQÂśW XQOHDVKHG on to the rest of the golf world for another four years. “She didn’t really play tournaments until she was nine years old, and right
off the bat, she won everything,â€? Mike Stoll said. “I mean, she’s won everything in the state of Oregon.â€? e made a little stop by the Lolich's Family Farm on Father's Day. I wanted to get VRPH ORFDO KRQH\ , KHDU WKDW LW KHOSV Ĺ…JKW DOOHUJLHV DQG VR , ZDQWHG P\ KXVEDQG to give it a try. I was also happy to see that they had fresh local cherries. Really nice, big and beautiful ones. Of course I just had to get some. Summer is here and I like to keep a supply of homemade fruit/veggie popsicles in the freezer at all times for our little toddler and his friends. Fruity cherry Popsicles? Sure, why not! I was also able to use the honey too. I made a Honey Simple Syrup, instead of the sugar version, to add in the popsicle mixture. This is really nice cold healthy treat for the whole family especially on a nice hot Summer day.
Cherry Popsicles (with Honey Simple Syrup) This should make about 8-10 popsicles. I ďŹ lled 6 big popsicles and 4 small ones (I only had these many popsicle molds) and still had some mixture left so I threw in some ice cubes into the blender and got a nice smoothie out of it too. t 4 cups fresh cherries (pitted frozen cherries will work ďŹ ne too) t 1 large Granny Smith Apple t 1 lime t 1 lemon t ½ cup of Honey Simple Syrup Directions 1. Pit the cherries and set aside. 2. Peel the apple, core and cut into pieces. 3. Juice the lime and lemon. 4. Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until mixture is pureed. This will be a little thick (don't panic) 5. Pour mixture into popsicle molds and freeze for about 4-5 hours or, better yet, freeze overnight.

Set aside and let it cool completely before using it. your mouth watering yet? Thinking back to my childhood love of Shirley Temples, I came up with a Cherry Almond-Vanilla smothered in a maraschino cherry butter cream frosting. They come in mini sizes so it's okay to eat more than one! The newest addition to my line up is the Chocolate Mocha Fudge which is dusted with coffee grounds and smells like you've just walked into a sweet, chocolate coffee shop. And yes, you can have this one along with your morning cup of jo.

Not long after she moved in she is burglarized and jewelry with a sentimental history is taken. “Lindaâ€? is terriĹ…HG VKDNHQ DQG is having trouble sleeping. VSC Rodriguez is contacted and provides resources, support and KHOSV ÄĽ/LQGDÄŚ Ĺ…OO RXW SDperwork. Suspect is found and charged. “Johnâ€? and “Carolâ€? (not their real names) are a young couple with two children. Times are tough and they are homeless. “Carolâ€? is asking people for money outside a restaurant with one or both children in tow. Police happen across them and are concerned for the children’s welfare. Katrina is called and is able to obtain emergency housing for them as well as food and baby supplies. A family shelter is located for the foursome. With help the family has found an apartment and husband is gainfully employed. All are real cases but not necessarily typical. According to Katrina, sometimes you have to intercede with our most vulnerable population to reduce the chances that they will become victims.

For the departments Victim Services Coordinator (VSC) contacts are more frequent, substantial and may be long term. Each day, meetings or training responsibilities aside, begins with checking the daily log for police activity. Every report with a listed victim will be reviewed for possible follow-up. Certain reports jump out as needing immediate attention. Those reports may include: Rape, robbery, assaults, elder abuse or domestic violence. A closer inspection of the narrative and or a meeting with the investigating RIĹ…FHU RU GHWHFWLYHV PD\ UHYHDO what next step needs to be taken. Other referrals may come from XQLIRUPHG RIĹ…FHUV GHWHFWLYHV other agencies or direct contact by the victim themselves or someone familiar with the victim. The VSC works directly with and is an advocate for victims of all kinds. The VSC goal is to provide information, resources, validation and support for the victim. Just like crimes come in all shapes and sizes with their own individual intricacies the same can be said for the crime victim. Most people don’t take advantage of crime victim services and are able to manage their loss without additional support. Always a fan of nuts & seeds, I observed that most nut butters were based on the same old peanuts or almonds and some form of processed sugar to make the product interesting. To fully experience Ten Tiny Dances, pick up a program, map and instructions at 10 a.m. at the Beaverton Farmers Market stage at SW 5th Street and Hall Boulevard. $10,000 Donation for Children's Books Murray-Scholls Branch Gets Much Needed Help From the By Victoria Campbell Beaverton Library Foundation bit overwhelming. Within days the shelves were nearly empty, especially in the children’s collections. Over the past two years more items have been added to the branch library’s collections; however, during the summer there is a great need for more books to be available so that young readers can maintain their reading comprehension. (Studies have shown that children that do not read in the summer can lose up to one-third of their reading comprehension.) Aloha Summer Days Event July 13-14 ummers back and the Aloha Community Library Association has organized an amazing event for mid-July. The event will be held at the former Bally's Fitness Center, 17800 SW Kinnaman Road, Aloha, OR on both Friday, July 13 and Saturday July 14. A book sale will be offered both days from 9am SP LQVLGH WKH IRUPHU Ĺ…WQHVV center. On the adjacent parking lot, a number of organizations will be offering wonderful family-oriented activities. These activities include the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District Nature Park mobile unit from 9am-12pm on Saturday, July 14. From 12pm-4pm, a health screening mobile unit operated by the Farmington Square Senior Care will be available. The Washington County Cultural Museum will have their mobile unit showing the comic art of Aaron Lopristi (local Tigard artist) along with kidfriendly craft-comic activity.

Beaverton Trivia t Beaverton has over 200 parks with 30 miles of hiking trails and a 25 mile bike path network. t The ďŹ rst commercial building was a log cabin general store built by George Betts in 1868.
in Umatilla County, Oregon and in Iowa before transferring to Willamette University in Salem, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1885. After a year or so traveling through Arizona, he established a practice in Beaverton, one that would continue until his death. When he arrived, the small farming community was beginning to grow, but wasn’t yet an incorporated city. It’s unclear when he met Lottie Danks, daughter of town wagon maker and blacksmith Augustine Danks1 and his wife Mary. In a town with a population of about 250, their paths very likely crossed many times. On October 20, 1889 he and 20 year-old Lottie married at home of her widowed mother. W.C. Ward of East Portland performed the ceremony, witnessed by W.E. Squires and Eva Milner. The Robinson’s house (1887) and pharmacy (1893), which Lottie managed, still stand on Broadway Street.

Dr. Robinson took an active role in fraternal, professional, and civic matters, joining the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masons. He was, in fact, one of seven Master Masons seeking a charter to establish a Beaverton Lodge in 1891. When their request was granted that summer, he was elected Worshipful Master of Beaverton Lodge Number 100, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, a position he held at various times until 1906. His keen abilities led to leadership roles with the Oregon State and Washington County Medical Associations, as well as Beaverton city councilor. The allopathic2 physician’s cause of death on March 22, 1915 was listed as heart disease. He was survived by Lottie and their children, Nellie and George, and buried at Crescent Grove Cemetery, Tigard.3

Dr. Robinson Francis Marion Robinson, long-time Beaverton doctor, died at 67 years, one month, and 17 days. He was born in February 1848 near what is now Hillsboro to James and Melissa Robinson, pioneers who made the westward journey over the Oregon Trail. The New and Improved Elsie Stuhr Center On the Road with Beaverton Lodge

f you are like me, you drive down the same streets, see the same people and shop at the same stores. The problem with this is, I also pass by many places without knowing just what they're about. Let me share the great experience I had at one such place. The Elsie Stuhr Senior Center in Beaverton is easy to miss as you drive to the library and even if you did see it, you might think it was some sort of care facility. After getting involved in the Senior Citizen's Advisory Committee however, I soon realized how wrong I
was and that was before the head to toe remodel! 0\ Ĺ…UVW LPSUHVVLRQ ZKHQ , walked into the building was the same as if I had walked into a niceHotel lobby or country clubâ€?: Spacious, inviting and warm with beautiful artwork displayed in glass cases that I later found out were made by members who attend classes at the center. My escort - and delightful guide - was the Center Supervisor, Linda Jo Enger, who enthusiastically showed me around greeting almost everyone she passed by name. That in itself impressed me greatly (as I'm known to forget even names in my own family!). Her energy and positive attitude were contagious as she took me from room to room. She is a proud representative of Elsie Stuhr and she offered the “warm and fuzzyâ€? that is lacking in most facilities. Who knew? Elsie Stuhr offers ping pong, pool, cards, dancing,
art classes wood carving, knitting, music, computer classes, theater art, writing, camera shops, gardening, yoga, pilates, tai chi and so much more. What really blew me away though was the workout room. Headed by Diane Brice, the Fitness Specialist, this room is inviting and complete with the latest equipment. The only thing it lacks is YOU!

Oregon’s Washington County is home to some of the best festivals and events the state has to offer. Just minutes from downtown Portland and set in the heart of the agricultural area of northwestern Oregon, summer ushers in agricultural events, farmers’ markets and myriad family festivals.
Oregon Lavender Festival (July 14-15, 2012) Multiple locations throughout Washington County and neighboring counties. Explore 6 lavender farms in Washington County as part of this annual Festival: Helvetia Lavender Farm, Jackson School Lavender, Mountainside Lavender, and Seasonal Mary Herb and Flower Farm. Each location will feature specials and events, including u-pick lavender, food infused with lavender, and lavender plants for sale. Admission to the farms is free.
Forest Grove Concours d’Elegance (July 15, 2012) PaciďŹ c University, Forest Grove Celebrate the Mercedes-Benz at this year’s annual Concours d’Elegance. The show features more than 300 antique and special-interest cars, as well as live music and food booths. Ticket prices range from $5 (youth) - $17 (adults).
Sherwood Robin Hood Festival (July 20-21, 2012) Old Town, Sherwood

Mary Petillo is a volunteer with the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard, Oregon. The GNC provides shelter for families in need as well as provide support

The Volunteer Coordinator at the GNC, Heidi Anderson told me that they had just given a Volunteer Appreciation Award to a wonderful lady who comes to the GNC and provides haircuts to all the families. Mary is also a Beaverton resident which makes her the perfect candidate to be
our July Beaverton Hero. Mary has a wonderful story and a powerful message for those looking to make a difference but don’t know where to start. She lives by the motto of “Learn, Earn and Return�. At the beginning of your career, you are in the beginning phase and learning. The majority of your career, you are in your earning phase and then the last part is the Return. What you can give back to society. Mary has been a hairstylist since 1983. However, due to a chronic allergy to Hair dye, she had to retire in 2008. She originally started volunteering with St. James Episcopal Church, where she helped provide meals to the homeless families. She realized how much she missed cutting hair and asked Heidi if there was an opportunity for her to help the families with haircuts. Haircuts can be an expense that exceeds many low income family’s budgets and Mary’s offer of free haircuts were met with overwhelming support and gratitude. They turn the laundry room

She even has a style book for the moms who can choose a new hairstyle for themselves as moms are usually the ones who will put themselves last on their list and neglect themselves for their families. I asked Mary what advice she has to people who are looking to make a difference but don’t know how and where to begin. Her advice is that there are many avenues to help out besides donating clothing or food to the Good Neighbor Center. There a r e
grounds that need upkeep, an after-school program, a child care area that needs volunteers. There are many opportunities for those that are retired and looking for a way to give back.
