STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Special Olympics, Incorporated is a worldwide program of sports training and athletic competition open to individuals with intellectual disabilities regardless of their abilities. The International Olympic Committee has granted its official recognition to Special Olympics, Incorporated.
MISSION The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
VISION Special Olympics New Jersey will be the premier non-profit sports organization worldwide, known for excellence and innovation in providing opportunities that enrich the lives of its athletes, their families and society as a whole.
ELIGIBILITY Until recently, eligibility for Special Olympics programs began with the eight-year-old who was identified by an agency or professional as having one of the following conditions: intellectual disability; a cognitive delay as determined by standardized measures such as intelligence quotient or other generally accepted measures; or a closely related developmental disability, i.e., functional limitations in both general learning and adaptive skills. The Young Athlete Program was created to include the two-and-a-half to sevenyear-old and teach the basics of sports movement. The program is fundamental in the preparation of youngsters for standard Special Olympics participation. There is no cost to participate in Special Olympics, however, all prospective athletes must register. Be a fan™ Dear Friends,
May 2011
June 10, 2011
On behalf of the global Special Olympics family, congratulations! You are here today, at these Summer Games, as an athlete, family member, volunteer, Board Director, coach, official or fan. You are a community, that together with Special Olympics, will impact everyone that your meet, sharing with them the amazing experience of our Movement. Special Olympics believes in creating a world where each person, regardless of ability, is accepted and welcomed and where every individual contributes to the strength and vibrancy of the whole. Sports is a universal language which unites people on and off the field of play, and its lessons are relevant to all of us – families, youth, educators, medical professionals and governments. And as millions more individuals are touched by the Special Olympics Movement, the traditional barriers of race, ethnicity, education level, social status, religion and economic background disappear and the human race as a whole prevails. Your on-going support and participation and your role in sharing Special Olympics in your community is vital for us to make positive change in the world through sport. This year we celebrate Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens, Greece from 25 June through 4 July. There, we will return to the home of the ancient Olympics, where amidst history and grandeur, our athletes will lay claim to the future of the Olympic ideals—to assert their vision for a view of human greatness defined by the bravery, the joy, the determination of the human spirit. We have also launched the first-ever Movement-wide strategic plan which promises to refocus us on the importance of high quality sport, to channel our energies toward building Special Olympics communities, and toward building a strong and sustainable future with new generations of fans, donors, and leaders. For the first time, we will begin a calendar year united not just around the mission, but around the ways and means to achieve its fulfillment. You are an important part of the Special Olympics family – a family that extends around the world in the largest of cities and the most remote villages. Everyone participating in these Summer National Games is a vital part of that family, whether you’re a volunteer, coach, family member, sponsor or supporter. The moments of accomplishment that will take place at these Games are only possible because of our family of fans, and for that, we are enormously grateful. As you enjoy the amazing experience of Special Olympics through competitions and events, I encourage every one of you to take your story – your moments of excitement, courage, inspiration and acceptance, and share them with every person you meet. Now, let the Games begin! Best Wishes,

Dear Summer Games Athletes and Friends: Welcome to the Special Olympics New Jersey 2011 Summer Games. Over the next few days we will all be privileged to witness the results of athletes who have committed months, and some even years, in preparation for their competitions at these Games. And we all will be honored to join the families of these athletes in celebration of their achievements. All of those who will make these 2011 Games an event of a lifetime for these athletes – whether you attend as a volunteer, Games Committee member, sponsor or coach – have or will earn the title of “friend” through your acceptance of our athletes beyond these Games. This acceptance through sport will lead to acceptance of our athletes in their schools and their communities and eventually on playing fields with schoolmates, neighbors and other friends. These Summer Games, when they conclude on Sunday, will once again be a beginning that will provide us all with a purpose to go back to our own communities and continue our efforts to offer opportunities to more athletes through understanding and inclusion. Our role as “friend” and ambassador will be critical for the growth of our movement going forward. To our volunteers, Games Committee members, sponsors, coaches and the entire Law Enforcement community, thank you for all that you have done to make this weekend possible. And to our athletes and their families, congratulations and best of luck!! Sincerely,

Special Olympics New Jersey provides year-round sports training and Olympic-type competition in 24 sports for more than 22,000 persons with intellectual disabilities in the state. More than 21,000 volunteers participate statewide. Special Olympics New Jersey provides sports training to athletes through local school, agency and community programs that compete on the Area (county), Sectional and Chapter (statewide) levels in any, or all, of four sports seasons. All competitions are conducted by certified sports officials in compliance with the National Governing Body sports rules. Special Olympics New Jersey employs a staff of 40 full-time and part-time employees at the Chapter office and Sports Complex in Lawrenceville, and is governed by a 19-member volunteer Board of Directors. Fundraising is the tool that supports the extensive volunteer management system which provides more than 160 competitive events year-round, all free of charge to participating athletes. Over 99% of the funds raised are through corporate sponsorships, individual contributions, special events and campaigns, all managed by staff and board members. In 2010, eighty-two cents of every dollar spent went to programs directly serving athletes. Participation opportunities offered beyond the traditional Special Olympics programs include Unified Sports速, a program that pairs community volunteers with Special Olympics athletes for practices and some competitions. Unified Sports速 provides additional volunteer opportunities to members of the community while introducing Special Olympics athletes to community-based sports.

This year, more than 400 athletes will compete in the sport at Armstrong Fields and TCNJ.
Track & Field VENUE: TCNJ Track The Track & Field events are the most popular of the Summer Games competitions, with more than 830 athletes involved. With a host of events in which to participate, athletes put their endurance, focus, strength and agility to the test in individual and team competitions.
Tennis VENUE: Center Courts Conditioning, speed, strength and anticipation are key to success in Tennis. More than 60 athletes will compete in Singles and Doubles held at the Tennis Center Courts.

Coaches A Special Olympics Coach is one who encourages self-assurance, boosts individual ability and promotes self-esteem through sport. Coaches assist athletes in learning sports skills and applying those skills in competition. They obtain necessary facilities and equipment for training, help recruit athletes, conduct yearround demonstrations and exhibition games within the communities of Special Olympics athletes. Coaches are generous with their time and patience. Olympics athletes succeed on and off the playing field.

Volunteers Volunteers are the cornerstone of Special Olympics New Jersey. Behind the scenes volunteers are hands-on with a wide variety of projects. On-site event volunteers include students, senior citizens, business people, the Law Enforcement community, athlete family members, amateur and professional athletes, coaches, teachers and many others. The sports management teams and coaches help organize programs and set up practices and competitions. As role models and character builders, coaches teach the sports skills and spirit that define a true athlete. Many positions do not require volunteers to be experts in a particular sport or event. Training and information is provided for each volunteer.

communities to awaken and inform residents of Special Olympics New Jersey Summer Games.
With 28 years under its belt, this growing group of State Committee volunteers from all branches of Law Enforcement has a focused mission … to create community awareness for the potential of people with intellectual disabilities and to ensure funding that will support every eligible person who desires to participate in the Special Olympics New Jersey program.
Throughout the year, the calendar is peppered with creative, large-scale fundraising events as members of the Torch Run State Committee ensure the ongoing growth of Special Olympics New Jersey athlete programs. Be it the challenge of taking a Polar Bear Plunge, or the test of fortitude in a run through the Lincoln Tunnel, or the test of strength in pulling a 93,000-pound jet, the Torch Run Committee’s events are being embraced by the public and are flourishing as evidenced in 2010, when the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics New Jersey was lauded for having raised more than $2.6 million.
Today, the Law Enforcement Torch Run has become a powerful force behind Special Olympics. Every June on the morning of Summer Games Opening Ceremonies, beginning as early as 4:45 am, some 3,000 members of Law Enforcement literally hit the streets running with the “Flame of Hope” torch. Known as the “Guardians of the Flame,” these officers travel on foot more than 900 miles, weaving through 387
Special Olympics New Jersey is honored by the dedicated service of the New Jersey Law Enforcement Torch Run and grateful to be the beneficiary of this group of loyal friends and supporters.

Tribute Patio Presented by The Sean Nelligan Foundation, the Special Olympics New Jersey Tribute Patio is the perfect way to set in stone a name, message or special event. The 5,000 square foot patio is paved with memories, and honors the achievements of athletes, the dedication of volunteers, the loyalty of sponsors, and the pride of families and friends. Located adjacent to the Special Olympics New Jersey Sports Complex, the Tribute Patio offers visitors a park-like setting “paved with thousands of stories represented by the dedicated blocks, plaques, benches and more.
Your purchase of a brick, block, garden or section of the Tribute Wall will help pave the way for more opportunities and services for Special Olympics athletes who inspire greatness in us all. Information about dedicating a portion of the Tribute Patio is available on our web site at www.sonj.org or by calling 609-896-8000.
