Since its world premiere in Montreal in October 2011, this electrifying production has thrilled audiences across North America, Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Middle East. Through unforgettable performances, the show underscores Michael’s global messages of love, peace and unity, and the band includes some of the same artists who previously worked side by side with Michael. Aimed at lifelong fans as well as those experiencing Michael’s creative genius for the first time, the show captures the essence, soul and inspiration of the King of Pop, celebrating a legacy that continues to transcend generations.

The band is currently finalizing their seventh studio album, scheduled to be released in the Fall of 2014. This album will be the band’s first new material since 2007. Toad the Wet Sprocket released their first LP, Bread & Circus, 25 years ago on their own independent label, Abe’s Records. Toad the Wet Sprocket (Glen Phillips on lead vocals and guitar, Dean Dinning on bass and vocals, Todd Nichols on lead guitar and vocals, and Randy Guss on the drums) share in the kind of musical chemistry that can only come from meeting in high school and writing, recording and touring on albums over the course of those 25 years.

Upcoming Flicks Save calorie room for the popcorn with extra butter, just to get your mouth watering, here are some of the hottest movies coming out May 23rd.

“X-Men: Days of Future Past” The beloved characters from the original “X-Men” film trilogy join forces with their younger selves from “X-Men: First Class,” in an epic battle that must change the past – to save our future. PG-13

“Blended”

After a disastrous blind date, single parents Lauren and Jim agree on only one thing: they never want to see each other again. But when they each sign up separately for a fabulous family vacation with their kids, they’re all stuck sharing a suite at a luxurious African safari resort for a week. PG-13

“The Angriest Man in Brooklyn”

Henry Altmann is having a horrible day, made much worse by his visit with Dr. Sharon Gill, who abruptly informs him that he only has 90 minutes to live. After storming out of the hospital in disbelief, Henry panics and races through Brooklyn in an attempt to right all of the wrongs in his life, while Sharon desperately scrambles to find him and get him into surgery. R

“Lila, Lila”

David Kern is a socially awkward waiter who works a dead end job in a chic cafe. One day he stumbles upon the biggest break of his life, an unpublished manuscript which he finds in a jammed nightstand drawer. He reads the manuscript, and thinking there might be something to it, claims it as his own in order to impress Marie, a pretty literature student who frequents the cafe. The manuscript turns out to be a lost masterpiece. Marie is quite taken with this stunning new writer, and is not content to let the hefty document go unpublished, much to David’s dismay. With David’s guilty conscience nibbling away, a stranger appears - the real author of the story, Jackie Stocker. Jackie wastes no time prying into David’s life and turning his newfound fame into a living nightmare. David, unable to comprehend what is unfolding before him, must come to grips with what his deception has caused, and figure out what exactly are Jackie’s plans. Will Jackie expose David as a fraud, or will he just “settle” for blackmailing him?

“Tracks”

The remarkable true story of Robyn Davidson, a young woman who leaves her life in the city to make a solo trek through almost 2,000 miles of sprawling Australian desert. Accompanied by only her dog and four unpredictable camels, she sets off on a life-changing journey of self-discovery. Along the way, she meets National Geographic photographer Rick Smolan who begins to photograph her voyage. PG-13

“Words and Pictures”

Prep school English teacher Jack Marcus laments his students’ obsession with social media and good grades rather than engaging with the power of the written word. A one-time literary star, Jack has not published in years filling his spare time with drink versus the art of language. He meets his match in Dina Delsanto — an abstract painter and new teacher on campus, who was once celebrated for her art. From the start, the two flirt and provoke each other with equal relish. With a performance review looming and his teaching job on the line, Jack hatches an inspired plan for galvanizing student interest in their studies: he declares a war between Words and Pictures, confident that the former can convey greater meaning than the latter. Dina and her art students accept the challenge between Jack and his English students, and the battle lines are drawn. PG-13

F

rom April 6th to the 12th a large team of volunteers from the Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary club traveled to Honduras to install water filters and build latrines with a non-profit called Pure Water for the World. This was the third annual trip for the WC Rotary team, and the largest group thus far! Traveling far up into the tropical mountains of southern Honduras the team worked in small communities that do not have running water, farming communities with high infant mortality rates due to water borne illnesses. Pure Water for the World started working in Honduras in 2009 after getting a grant from UNICEF, each water filter costs about $70 and is installed in the kitchen of each home.

Wesley Chapel Noon Rotary Club Traveled to Honduras

The average income for a farmer in Honduras is about $20 per MONTH, Pure Water only charges the end user $10 per filter, the rest is raised via donations. The team also constructed several sanitary latrines at several schools that help contain waste and prevent the contamination of local waters supplies. According to the World Health Organization about 3.1 million CHILDREN die each year from easily preventable water borne illnesses. Pure Water for the World was started in Vermont in 1994 by a Rotarian in the local Brattleboro club. The organization has since expanded out to Honduras and Haiti. The trip was made possible by generous donations from Agape Jewelers, Platinum Advertising, WC Toyota / Honda, EcoCool Technologies and Florida Hospital. • Contributed by Ben Alexander

Executive Chef

Makes House Calls

E

16

xecutive Chef Peter Gambacorta makes house calls by preparing his cuisine in his client’s kitchens. He attended the Culinary Institute of America, CIA, in New Hyde Park, New York. Cooking has always been his first love as far back as he can remember. His journey as a chef started in Buffalo, New York where he built a full-size commercial kitchen in his home. “What I wouldn’t give to have that kitchen here is Florida,” Chef Peter said. It was not until recently that Chef Peter decided to leave his pharmaceutical consulting

him on the Internet landing on his website and hired him to cook prior to spring training in Orlando. “I made him three calorie-laden meals a day,” Peter recalls. The player was under orders to gain weight before the start of the regular season. Dietary concerns are not always that simple. Chef Peter is the Executive Chef for the USF Diabetes Education Department where he consults on diabetic friendly meals that keep glycemic levels low and provide more than nutrition when prepared by the master’s hand. “Just because you are restricted from eating certain foods, there is no reason not

business to pursue a full-time career as a private chef. Since then he has been busy cooking for private parties and events in the Tampa area. His clients cover a broad spectrum of society including celebrities. A former outfielder for the Rays who now plays for the Atlanta Braves is one of Chef Peter’s clients and found

to enjoy eating the dishes you love,” said Chef Peter. Many of the foods he prepares are based on organic or gluten free ingredients. The term “Executive” refers to a chef who does in fact run a business including marketing, event planning and hiring others to assist him. Now you can add the title of “Teacher”

MAY 2014 • Wesley Chapel magazine

to his long list of culinary skills. “Learn to Cook with Chef Peter” is a new program where Chef Peter will come to your home and share his cooking secrets of regional Italian cuisine with you and up to eight of your friends. The reward is you get to eat everything that is made along with a free bottle of wine. There are already plans to expand the cooking school on the Internet with Chef Peter live to answer your questions and demonstrate how it is done. A favorite question clients often ask is what products do you use? In answer to that question Chef Peter has launched an online store starting with his own line of fine flavored exotic and common olive oils and balsamic vinegars for those with discriminating taste. There is also a decadent flourless chocolate cake that, for chocolate lovers, is to die for, or so say his clients say. Did I mention it is gluten free? Chef Peter lives in

Hunter’s Green with his wife Linda who is a teacher for special needs children at a local school. This year he is president of the Rotary Club of New Tampa and is a Knight of the Krewe of San’t Yago. In case you were wondering, he does much of the cooking at home much to the delight of his wife Linda who puts in long days. Clearly Chef Peter is well on his way to success in his chosen field. He is living proof that you can realize your dream at any point in your life. His entrepreneurial bent will no doubt take him in new directions as it did Wolfgang Puck with his line of foods. For now, you can find him at www. privatecheftampa.com. Bon Appetite! •

This skilled musician has also played guitar on many hit recordings, and his songs and cues are currently being played on hit TV shows like Ellen, Extra, NATGEO, and Modern Marvels just to name a few. Now Mr. Tommy is taking his children’s program to a whole new level by developing “Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus”, a musical classroom on wheels. Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus delivers a premiere musical enrichment program to select preschools and K-1 elementary schools in our area. The bus is beautifully decorated with carpeted floors and walls, bright colors, musical murals, along with a full theater sound system creating an exciting, comfortable and safe learning atmosphere. On the bus, children experience a fun, active and dynamic music class. The program is an on going, structured curriculum that Mr. Tommy developed after many years of teaching guitar and music theory. Children develop an understanding of note values and rhythms as well as getting a hands-on exposure to a variety of musical instruments. Every 2 weeks, children are introduced to a new style of music and get to see, hear, touch and learn about a new instrument which corresponds to that

particular style of music. For example, during the “Swing” music sessions, Mr. Tommy brought a trumpet on board the bus and each child got a chance to press the valves, while it was being played. Children also learned about a fiddle during “Celtic” sessions, a banjo for “Bluegrass” music, a trombone for “Circus” week, an electric guitar for “Rock” class and so on. Since this is usually the first time children are exposed to these styles of music, children light up with curiosity and delight. “ One of the biggest rewards for me”, says Mr. Tommy, “is the wonderful comments and emails that I get from parents, expressing that their children simply love and look forward to their class. They retain what they learn in their weekly sessions, and bring the information home to share it with their parents”. We all know the importance of music in early childhood education. Music encompasses Math, Grammar, Poetry and Geography and the sessions on Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus take it a step further by showing children how to work within a group and how fun it is to share. His students also build self-confidence through intense rhythmic physical movement activities, which in turn brings smiles and joy! If you have an opportunity for you and your child to see a Mr. Tommy Show, or to enroll your child in the sessions on Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus, do it! You’ll be glad you did! Mr. Tommy and Mr. Tommy’s Mobile Music Bus are on the go and business is on the grow! For info on participating preschools, Mr. Tommy shows, availability, booking, or to purchase Mr. Tommy CD’s and more, visit www.MrTommyPresents.com or find Mr. Tommy on Facebook for up to date news and events. •

Fashion

Maridy’s

FASHION TIPS Ready or not Swimsuit season is here!

B

uying swimwear is tricky at best, like buying all clothes are - only MUCH more so. I’ve always shied away from swimsuits because trying on swimwear at the beginning of spring/summer (when you’re not nice and tan and have been eating all winter kinds of great food) is not my idea of fun. But we do live in Florida, so not the worst thing... I guess. I’ve had a little change of heart about swimwear because there are so many different styles that have caught my eye.

One-piece Wonder One-piece swimsuits are really making a comeback this season, with a much more fashion - forward” feel to them. Used to be that one-pieces were strictly for curvy figures, but now I see all body types trying out the silhouette. 20

Cover-ups

Bikinis Two-piece styles, (my fav) can be a little more complicated because you can mix & match just about any top and bottom.

MAY 2014 • Wesley Chapel magazine

Swim cover-ups are essential to your swimwear style. Lightweight tunic or coverups are just about anywhere in an array of different styles. Sheer fabrics, printed, short, maxi - list goes on.

And here are some great looks for the guys in your family! Have fun and remember always put your own twist on things! Confidence = beauty! • Maridy

Annuals: Plants that can take summer heat include salvia, torenia, wax begonia, coleus, and ornamental pepper. Bulbs: Some lilies do better when their roots are crowded. Try planting Amazon, Aztec, and Clivia lilies in containers to increase blooming. Herbs: Plant heat loving herbs, including basil, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Vegetables: Southern favorites to plant now are okra, southern pea, and sweet potato.

What to DO

Pests: Harmful insects become more active as the weather warms. Watch for thrips, scale, and mites on ornamental plants. Gardenias: While some yellowing of older leaves is normal, yellowing of new growth usually indicates a micronutrient deficiency. Oleanders: Chewed or ragged leaves indicate oleander caterpillars at work. Lawn Insects: Watch for damage from chinch bugs in St. Augustine and begin scouting for newly hatched mole crickets in Bahia lawns. Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on tomato plants. Lawn nutrition: If Bahia lawns are yellowing, iron may correct the problem. Prevent lawn diseases: Prevent or minimize disease by following proper cultural practices when caring for lawns. Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA certified arborist.

University Bicycle Center Brings My City Bikes Project to Tampa

T

he My City Bikes project is on a mission to improve individual and environmental health by inspiring Americans to take one simple action: bike more. Although it may seem basic, getting on two wheels can have a profound impact on our personal wellbeing and the quality of our air. Tampa is no stranger to health challenges, with the worst air quality in Florida and 6 in 10 of its residents at an unhealthy weight. University Bicycle Center has teamed up with My City Bikes to help make a change in these lifethreatening trends with the Tampa Bikes app. The free Tampa Bikes app for Apple, Android and Windows provides one central, easy-to-use resource that you can access anytime, anywhere to make biking a part of your life. Tampa Bikes is a definitive guide to improving the health of ourselves and our community, and having fun in the process!

Air Quality

The American Lung Association gives

24

MAY 2014 • Wesley Chapel magazine

Hillsborough County an “F” for ozone pollution. That ranks the Tampa area as the worst of all Florida cities evaluated by the ALA. A 2012 ABC Action News report found that, “all of the experts interviewed agree on the #1 factor negatively impacting Tampa’s air: vehicle emissions.” The average passenger car produces about one pound of pollutants per mile. Swapping a car for a bike just once a week can make a serious improvement in air quality. Not to mention, every 10-mile round trip commute made by bike instead of by car saves you about $10. Last but not least, when you’re free from bumper-tobumper gridlock you may even find that get where you’re going faster! Starting your commuter biking habit is easier than you think. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you’ll need: • a bike with road-ready tires and a head and tail light • a helmet that is snug but comfortable • a backpack or bike bag (also known as “panniers”) to carry your things • bright clothing, preferably with reflective accents • a bike lock Check the Tampa Bikes app for commuterfriendly streets near you, then hit the road. Start with a shorter trip - the grocery store, a friend’s house, nearby restaurant, etc. • to get comfortable before embarking on longer journeys. Plan your route ahead and remember, bikes are considered vehicles and

must obey stop lights and traffic signs the same way a car would.

Personal Health

According to data from the CDC, 6 out of every 10 people living in the Tampa Metro Area are either overweight or obese, with 22% of residents reporting that they do not do any physical activity or exercise. Biking is an excellent joint friendly, low-impact activity that can be done indoors or outdoors, on a road or on a trail, alone or with a group. No matter how you like to be active, there is a biking style for you. Best of all, biking is practical. Not only can you improve your strength and cardiovascular endurance on a bike, but you can transport yourself from point A to point B doing it - talk about multitasking! As the local co-sponsor of My City Bikes, University Bicycle Center has dedicated itself to the wellbeing of the Tampa community by making sure that local residents have access to this resource. UBC, located at 1220 E Fletcher Ave. in Tampa, are online at www.ubcbike. com and on call at (813) 971-2277 to help you make biking a part of your lifestyle and improve Tampa’s health. The free Tampa Bikes app with the city’s best beginner-friendly commuter biking, road biking and mountain biking options will be available midMay 2014. The Last Word

1. Follow Your Curiosity: “I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.” Curiosity helps to fuel our imagination. When we ask questions of others, we can find out important information to help us solve problems, open new doors and form connections. When we ask questions of ourselves, we can shake up our beliefs, reveal our innermost desires and make positive change. 2. Perseverance is Priceless: “It’s not that I’m so smart; it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” If you have a dream, you’ll be faced with obstacles but by staying with problems longer, as Einstein says, can mean the difference between failure and success. Some ways to begin practicing perseverance is by committing to your dream, keeping a positive attitude, staying focused on what you want every day and bouncing back from adversity. 3. Focus on the Present: “Any man who can drive safely while kissing a pretty girl is simply not giving the kiss the attention it deserves.” What a great example Einstein uses to illustrate the importance of focusing on the present. We can miss the pleasures of the present by becoming too preoccupied with the past and/or future. Reminding ourselves daily to be present will bring us more peace and joy as well as provide us with a greater appreciation for life. 4. Imagination is Powerful: “Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions. Imagination is more important than knowledge.” With one idea, an empire can be built. Take for example, Walt Disney, a true master at imagination. He got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse from an old pet mouse he used to have on his farm. Imagination opens the door to a Kingdom of possibilities! 5. Make Mistakes: “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.” Mistakes are inevitable especially when pursuing something worthwhile. They can be disappointing and tough on the confidence but often necessary to test our true commitment to the end goal. What great things are ever accomplished without failing in some way first? The real failure is in the not starting or completing. 6. Live in the Moment: “I never think of the future – it comes soon enough.” As they say, the moment is all we really have, a tough concept to grasp. Eckhart Tolle in his book the Power of Now, said that a person’s success in truly being in the present moment can be measured by the degree of peace he or she feels within. By becoming more aware of the moment, we can ground ourselves in what matters most. 7. Create Value: “Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value.” How would you define success? What will make your life a success? These questions can be great ones to ask yourself. It can be raising healthy and happy children, having meaningful and fulfilling relationships, being authentic in conversations, writing a book, loving a career, feeling good everyday—whatever it is for you, that’s where to place or continue to place your focus. What we focus on truly expands. 8. Don’t Be Repetitive: “Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” If you have been unhappy in certain areas of your life such as finances or relationships, opt to do one thing different tomorrow. The idea is to shake up the routine. If you have a job that is unfulfilling or that is frustrating on some level, think about what you can do to change the situation. Sometimes a new perspective on the same situation is all it takes to open one’s eyes to what’s possible. The first step is to recognize the dissatisfaction and then take a single action towards satisfaction. 9. Knowledge Comes From Experience: “Information is not knowledge. The only source of knowledge is experience.” Actual experience creates knowledge that is respected and valued by others. We can read books, listen to tapes, and take courses, but the experiences we have in life can provide the best lessons for others. Your life story is rich in knowledge and people are ready to listen because it’s the most compelling and authentic way to make a difference with someone. 10. Learn the Rules and Then Play Better: “You have to learn the rules of the game. And then you have to play better than anyone else.” To become an expert at something, learn all you can about that subject, study other’s successes and then aim to do it better than them. The stronger your commitment and passion is to your endeavor, the greater your resolve will be to succeed. •
