P ublis h er ’ s Dear Pebble Creek residents,

Besides celebrating Valentine’s Day, make sure this month and in March, that you support Girl Scouts and buy lots of Girl Scout cookies. Thin Mints are my favorite. Speaking of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would give you a little cheat sheet for all the “love “ cards you will be sending out. Use one of these short endearments! Even if the sun refused to shine Even if romance ran out of rhyme You would still have my heart Till the end of time I Love You Hearts and flowers... Poetry... Love songs... Ribbons and bows... Yeah, I’d rather have the chocolate, too! Mom, Valentine’s Day and every day… ...you’re the heart of our family! Happy Valentine’s Day to my first husband. That’s just to keep you on your toes! I’m glad I married you. And I bet the kids are, too! This Valentine’s Day I thought we would have some good clean fun. Meet me in the tub.

MONGOLIAN GRILL: Pick your own meat, vegetables & sauce AND have the chef cook in front of you at no extra charge!

L etter

Happy Valentine’s Day ...and now I’m going to say something that will make you feel ecstatic... You have a chocolate deficiency. This Valentine’s Day let’s not spend a fortune on gifts for each other... But I know how you hate to be told what to do! Some women don’t need flowers, candy, or candlelight dinners on Valentine’s Day. Please be advised that I am not one of them. This Valentine’s Day I want a romantic meal... Any place that doesn’t ask, ‘You want any fries with that?’ It’s not every day that I tell you I love you... OK, maybe it is, but Valentine’s Day is still special. You always show how much you care with the loving things you do From a tender kiss to a warm embrace and whisper “I LOVE YOU”

PEBBLE CREEK NEWS / FEBRUARY 2013

A Letter to Angela Hester, Community Association Manager

February House of the Month 9619 Cypress Brook (Pebble Creek)

A Request from a Resident of Pebble Creek: I live in the Pebble Creek subdivision and I walk daily throughout the neighborhood and am pleased to see the American flags flying. However, some of the flags are in desperate need of replacement as they are torn, shredded, wrapped around the flagpoles, etc. If a flag is in bad shape, please replace it . Most Boy Scout troops and/ or the American Legion will take the flags so that they may be "retired honorably." Thank you. Sincerely, Mary Lou Rucker

Hi Angela, I have a comment that I hope you can address. The subject is falling leaves. In the past, I had an issue with Greenscapes and their blowing the leaves into the street and eventually ending up in my yard. This practice has been corrected, thank you. My only issue today is homeowners and/or landscapers doing the same. The leaves are blown into the street and usually end up in the storm drains, clogging them when it does rain. (I actually witnessed my next door neighbor's landscaper blowing all their leaves and all the leaves that are in the cul-de-sac onto the common area.) I had to park my cars in the cul-de-sac the other day to allow repairmen access to my driveway and noticed how messy the gutters were with leaves. Now I know that they are purposely blown into the gutter. I believe we are all responsible for the leaves in our yards and need to bag or mulch them, not to share them with the street, common areas or ponds. I put out 4 - 8 bags of leaves a week that end up in my yard. I will not share my leaves with neighboring areas. Could something be mentioned about this in the next newsletter? With the leaves coming down at this time of year, we all need to be more responsible for our own mess, not blow it somewhere else for someone to have to pick up. Thank you and best wishes, A Concerned Resident

LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE We have the start of a program for community awareness that will focus on sprucing up our common areas. Suggestions and ideas for improvement are needed. We need input on the type of landscaping you believe is suitable for our community and in particular your immediate area. Spring, and the optimum planting season will soon be here. We need to get our plans finalized. Please help by giving us your thoughts! Call Tina to volunteer!

Just in Time for a Valentine’s Day Tennis Match

3 Things You Need for Great Doubles Playing with a partner makes the individual game of tennis into a team effort and so much more fun. The game can be even more fun when you and your partner win! There are certain stokes that can make winning doubles more likely. A spin serve,

Not a Big Serve but a Good Spin Serve The biggest problem with the big fast serve is this: It reduces the time you have to get ready for the return. Players on the receiving end of your serve also get the chance to block or tee off at the ball, using the pace

returner as much pace to work with, and if it's a good slice or kick, it will force them to move. If it's good enough, then a weak return is always the result of a player forced to move their feet when off balance and will bring your partner in to play -- more often than not, to poach. It also opens up more gaps on the court for you to exploit (as your opponents have to move to get the ball).

Not Topspin Groundstrokes – Use Slice Stay away from hitting high looping shots from the back

ball in less time (no rotation needed). You can also play it while moving forward (again no rotation needed), so getting to the net quicker becomes easier. And you can get the ball down low to the feet of the opposition much easier, making things much more difficult for your opponent.

Not an Overhead Smash But a Variable Overhead This the same principle as not needing a hard, flat serve. The returners of the smash often don't move much and use the pace you give them to give you an even higher, deeper ball to smash again. When you are faced with a lob and your opponents are at the baseline waiting for your smash, what you need is a sliced or angled overhead landing around the service line. Not only is that nearly impossible to pick up from behind the baseline, it also means that if they do go for it they are on the move (control is then difficult) and they also leave massive gaps on the court.

you've given them and often without having to move their feet. They retain their court position and are ready to play another shot if they need to. A good spin serve does everything a hard flat serve can't. It gives you more time to get in to the net or ready for the next shot (hopefully a volley). It doesn't give the 8

of the court. Shots traveling high and deep to the back of the court with topspin become a nice easy volley either for the opposite net player, who can poach it, or for the oncoming volleyer.

The Pebble Creek tennis program is open to all residents. All lessons are taught by a USPTA certified professional. Contact Lori Miles at 727-2240 or PCTennis4Kids@msn. com for more information. The Current Tennis Lesson Schedule is: Monday 5 – 8:30pm Tuesday 5:00 – 8:30pm Wednesday 7 – 8pm Thursday 6 – 8:30pm Saturday 9 – 10am

Hopefully, these shots will help you in your next doubles game! v

With a slice, you can play without rotating your upper body, which does several great things for you. It means you can deal with a fast oncoming PEBBLE CREEK NEWS / FEBRUARY 2013

County Commissioners Unanimously Choose Automated 2-1-1 Garbage Collection Option Calling the bid process a “home run” for County garbage customers, Hillsborough County Commissioners voted unanimously in January, during a special workshop, to select a new service option that will bring automation to the way residential garbage and recyclables are collected from more than 250,000 households. Known as “2-1-1 Automated Service,” County residential garbage customers will continue to receive twice-weekly garbage collection, onceweekly recyclables collection, and once-weekly yard waste collection. But beginning this October, they will be bringing garbage and recyclables to the curb in wheeled carts provided

by the County for emptying by specially-equipped trucks. The current residential solid waste collection contracts, which have been in place for nearly 17 years, expire Sept. 30. Bids were sought last fall on four possible service options, including the current manual collection of garbage and recyclables. When the bids were tallied, all of the options meant lower costs for the County, and ultimately customers. The 2-1-1 Automated Service option is projected to save the County more than $7.5 million annually, a 22 percent reduction than if the current contracts had been renewed. Besides lower costs, the new

contract will enhance the financial integrity of the County’s solid waste system, County Administrator Mike Merrill told Commissioners during the workshop this afternoon. “This contract will allow us to get to a place we’ve never been before,” he said. Commissioners awarded contracts to private haulers for residential collection in each of five newly-defined districts during a regular Board meeting on Jan. 24th. Commercial customers will still be able to negotiate directly with any of the private haulers for collection. Commissioners expressed concern about job loss

when the automated option is implemented. Commissioner Al Higginbotham said he would be bringing back an agenda item to discuss what the County might be able to do to help. Commissioners made their decision following an extensive campaign to gather public input into how customers felt about the service options. v

BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA Boy Scout Troop 180 can look back on a very busy and successful final quarter of 2012. Scouts were involved in a number of service activities including sorting food for the needy at Feeding America at St. Mark’s Church, assisting Cub Scouts with Halloweenrelated activities at a weekend camp, and participating in the Veterans Day Parade at James A. Haley V.A. Hospital with other scout troops. The Troop also congratulates three boys for recently earning scouting’s highest honor, Eagle Scout rank: Nicholas Guggemos, Ethan Walther, and Caleb Scott.

If you are looking for a Troop to join, we always welcome new members. We

also welcome parents to share their time and talents as leaders. Even if your time is limited,

you’ll find the Scouting program rewarding. Our Troop is sponsored by Grace Episcopal Church in Tampa Palms which is where we meet most Sunday evenings, unless we are camping. Big Brothers Big Sisters Reunites with Alumni during National Mentoring Month As the nation celebrates National Mentoring Month, it is important to let all mentoringminded people know how much they matter. Across the

nation, Big Brothers Big Sisters is reconnecting with alumni Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members. The reunion effort is an extension of Start Something®, a national initiative Big Brothers

Big Sisters unveiled two years ago in partnership with the Ad Council. The effort invites all adults – not just volunteers -- to support quality mentoring to change the odds for children facing adversity. The 2013 nationwide search

and reunite effort extends Start Something to hundreds of thousands of people who have an affinity with Big Brothers Big Sisters, but have not been asked to stay or become re-engaged with the organization. Our hope is that by bringing our alumni together and showing them how much we appreciate them, we will open avenues for people who are already invested in our work to “Start Something [Again]” to help kids succeed in school and life. Each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters serves nearly 2,000 youth in Hillsborough, Polk and Pasco County. Most of them are children of single, low-income or incarcerated parents or sons and daughters of military personnel.

Longstanding independent research and Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Survey™ results find children enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters improve in areas such as school, behavior and self-esteem. Today, as Big Brothers Big Sisters embarks on a nationwide search to reunite with former Bigs, Littles, donors and family, staff and board members, I encourage you to ask friends and family once involved to visit our websites and reconnect with us. And if you are the person with whom we have lost contact, we believe National Mentoring Month is a perfect time to Start Something [Again]. v
