Land O’ Lakes Resident Starts New Business, Cards for Grandma, to Support Seniors Facing Isolation Presley walking with his grandmother

When visitation restrictions

Cards for Grandma is a service that sends one or two personalized cards containing 500 character paragraphs to seniors every month. The paragraphs touch on lighthearted topics ranging from my travels, to the change of seasons and the designs on the outside reflect the theme on the inside. The contents and designs change with each mailing, so no two cards are ever alike. I use a robot holding real pens to “write” the cards ensuring every card has a handwritten look and feel while allowing us to serve as many seniors at the lowest price possible. We offer monthly subscriptions plans as well as month to month purchases ranging from $6.99 for one to $11.99 for two. We also give the option to purchase charitable plans, which provide cards for lonely seniors living at some of the accredited care facilities we work with. This is a great option for someone who wants to help but that may not have a specific senior in mind. Our mission is to create smiles one card at a time, and it all started with a card for grandma. For more information, please visit cardsforgrandma.com.

went into place due to Covid, the newfound isolation was especially hard on my grandma. She went from being her bubbly and vibrant self to becoming anxious and depressed. Her dementia compounded the trouble she was having since she couldn’t grasp the scope of the pandemic and why she had to be separated from family and friends. Feeling helpless, I began sending her handwritten cards to fill the void. For older folks, it seems like handwritten cards and letters are their love language and the cards proved invaluable in helping pull my grandma out from the rut. The cards were adorned with meaningful messages and beautiful artwork giving her something tangible to hold, read, and remind herself that she was anything but alone. The transformation the cards brought upon her was noticed by everyone, leaving the nurses at her assisted living attributing the change to “all those darn cards” she had been receiving and proudly plastering about in her room. After witnessing the profound positive impact something as simple and timeless as handwritten cards had on her, I set out to do the same for others and created Cards for Grandma.

Flying Squirrel Sports is Open! Luke Schueler and his twin brother Cody

have been connoisseurs in the trampoline park industry for over a decade and have operated trampoline parks since 2009. They founded Flying Squirrel Sports in 2015 and now have 17 locations worldwide including six countries and they have multiple new locations scheduled to open in 2021. The parks offer a number of unique patented attractions designed by the Schuelers to take advantage of the fast-paced fun and everything has been designed with safety as the #1 priority. “We decided to offer our unique concept to the community of Lutz due to the lack of family entertainment offerings in this area. The building is located in a great area and matched our target demographics with easy access for transportation from surrounding areas. We are extremely excited to bring Flying Squirrel Sports to Pasco County,” said Luke Schueler, COO and Co-Founder of Flying Squirrel Sports. The new 40,000 square-foot indoor sports and family entertainment center in Lutz features a variety of attractions, providing a fun and unique family-friendly experience. Attractions include: Massive trampoline courts, extreme traverse climbing wall, battle beam, pro dunk hoops, stunt jump air bag court, aerial silks, air track tumbling floor, Olympic performance wall running trampolines, dodgeball, zip line, interactive climbing wall, kiddie trampoline court and dunk hoop, redemption arcade, a birthday party zone, a cafe and more. Plus they boast three private room Topgolf Swingsuite golf simulators. Every Friday and Saturday night, the park transforms into a glow in the dark trampoline dance club with a state of the art lighting and sound system. The brothers also founded Shock Trampoline Parks in order to identify potential problems the industry faces. This organization was established to fulfill the need in the industry to create a safer trampoline park. The industry has grown rapidly in North America and has recently expanded into international markets. This rapid expansion has brought to light one of the main issues patrons can face - injuries sustained by patrons when they lose control and land on trampoline pads that overlay the steel frames. As a solution, the two entrepreneurs developed and patented the world’s only shock attenuating trampoline park structure. The design includes German gas shock absorbing suspension system incorporated directly into all of the trampoline framework. When jumpers land on the trampoline pads that overlay the steel structures, the impact attenuating system allows the trampoline frames to absorb impacts across all trampoline courts. Similar to the concept of a mountain bike with shocks running over a speed bump. By incorporating gas shocks into the framework, this allows the trampoline frames to absorb impacts and lower up to 3 inches, ultimately reducing injuries from patrons landing on the trampoline pads. All Flying Squirrel Sports locations utilize this patented trampoline technology. “Our priority has always been, and will continue to be the health and safety of our guests and team members. We follow both the CDC and all local health department guidance to reinforce our procedures. We have a dedicated operating manual and training program created by industry experts with insight

from professional consultants specifically tailored to covid-19 operational procedures, policies and situations, plus dedicated staff to monitor all attractions to ensure safety and social distancing rules are being followed. Cleanliness and safety is our #1 priority and every Flying Squirrel facility is cleaned with specialized EPA-registered hospital-grade disinfectants prior to opening, hourly, daily and at closing. The complete listing of all of our dedicated safety and cleaning protocols are on our website, but here are just a few I can mention.”

• All staff require mandatory temperature checks and health-screening prior to every shift.

• Face Coverings required for all staff and guests • • •

2 years of age or older at all times. Surgical 3-ply face masks are available in-store. Hand Sanitizer stations provided throughout the facility and required to use prior to participating on certain attractions. 6 feet social distancing markers and signage placed throughout the entire facility. 50% reduced guest capacity limit & dedicated cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces.

“This massive park features world-class attractions designed and geared to safety and to please everyone in the family, kids and adults,” said Luke Schueler, COO and Co-Founder of Flying Squirrel Sports. Schedule a playdate and bring the whole family to come check out this exciting new Lutz attraction! ______________________________________________

Abby’s Organic

Community Farm Hosts Homeschoolers Many people in the community

may not realize that while Abby’s farm isn’t open to the public, they do host field trips for students to come out and learn about sustainable farming and growing your own food. This was the late founder, Abby Sayler’s mission – to teach the next generation about where their food comes from and how to grow healthy food for themselves. In September, Abby’s farm hosted the FISH homeschool group for a field trip. This very engaged, enthusiastic and well-mannered group came from Plant City, Brandon and Riverview to visit Abby’s beautiful farm on Highway 41 in Lutz. Students were separated by age and taught their “Nature Lab” curriculum and the students were genuinely interested in learning some orienteering/navigational life skills. In the first week of fall, the weather was already dramatically better, which wouldn’t take much after the last couple months of rain and heat. The school’s group leader Terry said, “We all had the best time, seriously. It was fabulous and you guys did amazing. We would like to do another field trip sometime soon.” Nancy Niemann is the Education Director at Abby’s Organic Farm and she organizes and host these events. Do you remember your favorite teacher in school? They can and Nancy epitomizes everyone’s favorite teacher. They simply love what they do and it shows. Come visit the farm and meet your next favorite teacher, she never disappoints! Abby Sayler’s legacy lives on.

How a Simple Mammogram Could Save Your Life When

you feel healthy, it’s tempting to delay annual checkups and screenings. No symptoms means no concerns, right? Unfortunately, we know that underlying medical conditions often go undetected for too long without regular preventive care. Even with the busiest schedule, your health should always be a priority.

MRI

Instead of X-rays, an MRI scan uses a magnetic field to make images. Although an MRI can find breast cancer that mammography misses, it doesn’t find all breast cancers. An MRI is effective for women whose health history includes:

• BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation • Immediate family member — mother, sister or child —

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women in the U.S. and annual mammograms are still the top recommended screening for women, allowing the earliest possible detection of breast cancer — even before you experience symptoms.

The Key to Lifesaving Early Detection A mammogram is such a powerful tool because of its ability to

Ultrasound

catch breast cancer early. In fact, it can detect breast cancer up to two years before a tumor can be felt by you or your doctor.

Catching cancer early means:

• Therapies like breast conservation therapy will be most effective • Treatment can begin early, possibly before the cancer spreads

to other parts of your body

• You’ll have the best possible chance for a cure

Many women with breast cancer have no symptoms. According to the American Cancer Society, many decades of research show women who have regular mammograms are more likely to have breast cancer found early, are less likely to need aggressive treatment like surgery or chemotherapy and are more likely to be cured.

This exam uses sound waves to make an image. Women who are pregnant or at very high risk for breast cancer, and who can’t have an MRI or be exposed to X-rays, can benefit from an ultrasound. It’s also better at finding breast cancers in women who have dense breast tissue, which is more difficult to diagnose using mammography.

Know Your Risk for Breast Cancer

It’s important to know your risk for breast cancer. Some risk factors you can control, like your weight and lifestyle. Others you can’t, including:

Screening mammograms are for women who have no signs of breast cancer such as a lump, pain or change in breast size or shape. These simple appointments are often complete in 30 minutes or less. Breast cancers found during screening exams are more likely to be smaller and still confined to the breast. Diagnostic mammograms are prescribed when a screening mammogram shows an area of concern. They take more detailed images from different angles to help your care team make the most accurate diagnosis.

Screening if you are High-Risk

If your risk for breast cancer is higher than average, your care team may recommend additional screenings that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasound. Although these can be combined with a mammogram, they are not a replacement.

• Radiation treatment to the chest between ages 10 and 30

Screening vs. Diagnostic Mammograms

Mammography uses X-rays to take images of your breasts. Screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms use the same equipment and procedures; they differ in the number and type of images made.

with BRCA1 or BRCA2

• Age • Density of breast tissue • Family history of breast cancer • First menstrual period before age 12 • Genetic mutations BRCA1 and BRCA2 • History of fibroids or other benign breast conditions • Race and ethnicity

When you understand the breast cancer risk factors you can control, you can manage them better with the guidance of physicians who have your whole health in mind.

Feel Empowered With Preventive Care

If you’re between the ages of 20 and 40, you should have a clinical breast exam by your doctor at least every three years. If you’re 40 or older, an annual screening mammogram may be recommended by your doctor. If you haven’t had a mammogram in the past year and you’re over age 40 with no abnormal symptoms, you can self-refer for a screening mammogram. Simply make an appointment at an imaging center and have the results sent directly to you.

10 Reasons to Exercise The Pandemic

has taken its toll on our exercise plans by forcing us to stay at home and limiting the classes we can participate in. Here are some good reminders of the ‘why’ we need to take care of our health with consistent exercise. In order for a goal to have a long-term effect, we must refer back to the relevance or the reasons behind the goal. When we put actions into a greater context of the importance or relevance, it is easier to change the behavior by reviewing the significance of why you want to make the change in the first place. The greater the detail of the reasoning, the more likely that the goal will not be abandoned. So before you give up on that goal of a healthier 2020, here are ten benefits of exercise based on research so that you may find your “why.”

5 6

If you want to live longer - exercise. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that the risk of premature death of those with a sedentary lifestyle was 500% higher than those who exercised.

Prevention of Muscle and Bone Density Loss

3

Both skeletal muscle and bone density declines with age. Sarcopenia (a type of muscle loss that occurs with aging and/or immobility) is to muscle what osteoporosis is to bone. Loss can begin around age 40 with over half of muscle strength lost by age 70. Both can be reversed and improved with strength resistance training using weights, machines, resistance bands, and stability balls. One must incorporate strength training with cardio for long-term health benefits.

Exercise affects the metabolism by increasing the metabolic rate, which means you burn more calories at rest.

Disease

Exercise boosts good HDL (High-Density Lipoproteins) and decreases unhealthy triglycerides, so it combats all health conditions and diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, depression, anxiety, many types of cancer, and arthritis.

So even if you have let those aspirations, resolutions, and goals lapse since January, September is a great month to establish your reason to get moving and then do it! Jazzercise does a body and a mind good! We are offering zoom classes in your home if you are not ready to return to in-person classes in the studio. _________________________________________

Deb Goldman is the owner of Lutz Jazzercise located at 19012 First Street SW in Lutz.

Flexibility

Exercise increases the range of motion for better flexibility and decreases stiffness in joint and the pain and inflammation associated with arthritis.

Energy

By delivering more oxygen to the tissues and muscles in the body, exercise boosts your energy.

Sleep

Research has shown a greater heart rate dip between your waking and sleeping heart rate, the better sleep you get. Exercise increases the waking heart rate, which promotes better and deeper sleep.

4

Brain Health

Exercise has immediate effects on one’s brain. A single workout improves the ability to shift and focus attention, increase the levels of neurotransmitters that boosts your mood, and improves reaction time. Consistent exercise has shown a direct link to lower the risk of depression. Exercise also improves long-term memory by producing new brain cells in the hippocampus. In addition, it protects the brain by

10

Research has shown that regular physical activity may enhance your sex life. The best part of all the research studies is that you can get the benefit of consistent exercise at any age; it is never too late to start!

7 8 9

Diet and exercise go hand in hand. Diet is the primary way to lose weight. Exercise is the primary way to maintain weight. A combination of healthy diet and exercise is the fastest, safest way to lose weight and keep it off.
