The Old Lutz School will host a Spring Day on March 23rd

T

he Old Lutz School will host a Spring Day on March 23rd from 9am-2pm. The event is free for the community to attend and will include an outdoor vendor market, the Lutz Museum and many food items for sale to benefit the historical landmark. There will also be a gardening workshop at 10am given by Lynn Barber of the UF/ IFAS Extension Hillsborough County. Lynn is a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Agent and works with the Center for Landscape Conservation and Ecology (CLCE). Did you know: The first school in Lutz was a one-room frame schoolhouse located where the Old Lutz School brick building stands today. It was built by the North Tampa Land Company in 1910. In 1912, 37 students, first through eighth grade, attended Lutz School. They all learned together in the one-room schoolhouse. Eighteen year-old Miss Callie Berry was the principal and teacher & she earned a whopping $30.00 per month! Come out for great shopping, food and gardening fun all while supporting a historical treasure in our own backyard. The Old Lutz School is located at 18819 U.S. 41, Lutz, FL. For information regarding the event or to become a vendor, please call Stephanie Ensor (813) 244-2256 or email market@oldlutzschool.com.

Lutz Elementary K-8 S C H O O L Exciting news!

As you may have heard, Lutz Elementary is in the process of transitioning to a K-8 school. This school year successfully saw the addition of sixth grade, and we look forward to the additions of seventh and eighth grades in the next two school years. As a citizen of Lutz for the last 10 years, and a Lutz Elementary/K-8 parent since 2012, it is always surprising to me that I often find myself in conversation with local citizens who don’t realize Lutz is transitioning to a K-8 school, or even that Lutz School exists! It is for this reason that I wanted to take a moment to write a few words to the community about the public school gem that exists right in our backyards. Lutz K-8 is a highly rated school, a 5 Star School Award Recipient, recognizing exemplary family, school and community involvement. It is SACS Accredited, and employs Nationally Board Certified and Highly Effective Teachers. Lutz has an active and supportive PTA, providing curriculum based programs and social events throughout the school year for Lutz families. The addition of sixth grade this year has brought intramural sports (flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer), Junior Civitan International Club, a community service oriented club for students, Student Government, and middle school electives such as Spanish, Public Speaking, Art and Music. Plans for electives for seventh grade include a technology based elective, performing arts elective, foreign language, and more. Students across several grade levels are able to participate in performing arts such as chorus, hand bells and drums, Lutz’ own student Rock Band, as well as produce and anchor WKID, the school-wide morning show, to name a few. The curriculum is rich in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) instruction, with students throughout Lutz learning coding and robots, and students in middle to upper elementary grades participating in district-wide competitions such as STEM Fair, Math Bowl, Economics Team, Science Olympics, and Battle of the Books. In addition to the varied academic enrichment at Lutz, middle school students enjoy smaller class sizes, providing them with opportunities for project-based, hands-on learning. This year’s sixth graders created a “Shark Tank” inspired invention for judges and beautified an area on school campus with pavers, a rain barrel, and landscaping. In Ancient World History they built catapults, mummified tomatoes, and created a SnapChat for King Tut. In Earth Science, sixth graders created 3D models of the earth, made weather stations and enjoyed a landslide lab. Spanish class brought tastings of Hispanic food and creations of family trees. In Math, students were afforded the opportunity to develop a living coordinate plane, participate in team building activities building structures as competition, and design a quilt while learning about Geometry and the Underground Railroad. My husband and I did our research before deciding to send our oldest son to

Kindergarten at Lutz, comparing local public, private and charter school options. No other area school compared to what our children would receive at Lutz, and seven years after our oldest son became a Lutz Leopard, we are confident we made a great choice. If you’re looking for a school that balances a small, neighborhood community feel with technology and strong academics, I encourage you to tour Lutz K-8. More information about school tours can be found by calling the front office at (813) 949-1452, or stopping by the office at 202 5th Ave SE, Lutz. The second window of School Choice for Hillsborough County is coming up March 27-April 5. We choose Lutz! Katie Holeman Parent to three Lutz Leopards Lutz K-8 PTA President

Pasco Blues & Food Festival They came to eat. And of course, they came to jam.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY MIKE CAMUNAS

Hundreds of locals made their way to The Pasco Blues & Food Festival at Land O’ Lakes Heritage Park on Feb. 9. Crowds were treated to various local bands, fantastic food trucks & many unique vendors sharing their wares and services. Bands and musicians such as George Pennington III, Steve Arvey, Home Cookin’ Band and Pasco Lefty performed throughout the afternoon. The main act, Forever Eric: an Eric Clapton Tribute Band, closed out the show that evening. Entry proceeds to the festival benefitted Gulfside Hospice in Land O’ Lakes, while alcohol sales benefitted the Stano Foundation, a nonprofit in Wesley Chapel that specializes in sending care packages to stationed military and troops. Community businesses rallied together to make this charity event a great success. Community sponsors included AT&T, Florida Financial Advisors, My DNA Cancer Testing, Pepin and Simply Events. Several local businesses supported the event, including Morgan Exteriors, who sponsored the festival’s music stage. Lakeside Air Conditioning and Family Friendly Tampa Bay hosted the event’s Family Fun & Kid Zone, while GMS Physician Group sponsored a Free Photo Booth. Cornerstone Air Conditioning provided free balloon animals and the hospitality tents were sponsored by Full Life Chiro.

Shannon Terkoski, a patient who lost over 100 pounds in 8

months states, “This really is ‘The One That Works!’ In the past, I had tried several diet plans with limited success, so I was skeptical when I started, Medi-Weightloss® Clinic in Lutz. However, by following their directions, I had success every single week until I hit my goal! It was unimaginable!” Erin Jones, the Office Manager, has a unique perspective of the Medi-Weightloss® program since she started as a patient there on her own weight loss journey. Erin explained, “Because I was a patient first, I can lend understanding to our patients on things they may struggle with. I can personally share what I did during my program that helped me achieve success.” “Many patients who come in beat themselves up for having failed with previous weight loss programs and this tends to send them into a repetitive negative cycle. We have even had clients walk in the door for a free assessment in tears. To counteract that, we immediately try to get patients into a more positive cycle by jump starting them with a 5-7 pound weight loss in their first week. We urge them to focus on a 10 pound goal, one step at a BEFORE time, instead of a 100 pound goal, which can be very overwhelming,” states the owner, Gerri. Medi-Weightloss® Clinic in Lutz has a philosophy that defines their business, if there is anything they can do to help, they do it! Their goal is to make it fun for people to lose weight. They have motivational contests and always strive to have our patients look at the big picture and recognize and be proud of their progress. In November, a contest winner receives a turkey equal to the pounds the patient lost. All patients are medically supervised by their staff physician, Dr. Andrew Weitzman, M.D., who is board certified in Internal Medicine. Dr. Weitzman brings years of experience to Medi-Weightloss® Clinic in Lutz. In regard to his approach with his patients, Dr. Weitzman said, “In their first visit, I ask them to describe their typical day so I can get an understanding of their current lifestyle and habits. With all these factors in mind, I can design a program that specifically suits their needs and integrates a common sense diet and exercise program into their modern hectic lifestyle.” Dr. Weitzman also reviews the patient’s medical history and weight loss goals, then performs bloodwork and an EKG. Unlike other programs, there are no expensive pre-packaged foods to purchase, however there are Medi-Weightloss® foods to choose

||

from. The clinic provides many delicious recipes that can be used to make healthy meals for the entire family. They can also accommodate special diets such as organic or vegetarian plans. As part of their program, MediWeightloss® utilizes an arsenal of tools to help patients on their weight loss journey including dietary supplements, injections, vitamins, FDA approved appetite suppressants, natural appetite suppressants, with nutritionally guided meal planning and exercise counseling. One of the key tenets of the program is journaling. This allows patients to really see everything they eat and how much physical activity they are getting each day, which helps them fine tune their program as they move forward. They also provide a support website where patients can access additional resources such as exercise programs and equipment. Medi-Weightloss® Clinic in Lutz focuses on a three phase program guiding patients through beginning to lose weight, achieving their weight loss goal, and finally a wellness phase for maintaining the weight loss. Their caring staff supports patients during all phases, offering counseling and even sending cards of AFTER encouragement and support at times when they might be struggling. Medi-Weightloss® provides training for skills that are critical to managing your weight such as assessing a plate of food and understanding the portions. One of the biggest frustrations for people is that they feel they cannot enjoy dining out while trying to lose weight. Medi has addressed this challenge by having their dietician visit local restaurants so that they have a dining out menu that they can recommend. If a patient regains some weight after they finish their program, Medi-Weightloss® offers support then as well. Dr. Weitzman instills in his patients, “This is forever and life happens! So when it does and you need to come back into the program, we’ll help you get right back on track to return to your desired weight and continue a healthy lifestyle. There is no start-up fee to rejoin the program and we support you long term.” The Medi-Weightloss® staff’s favorite thing is to see is the expression on a patient’s face when they walk out the door – they are proud! _________________________________________________________________ MEDI WEIGHTLOSS, LUTZ - Andrew Weitzman MD 24420 State Road 54 • Lutz, FL 33559 813.909.1700 TO ADVERTISE CALL 813-501-4894 | VOLUME II • ISSUE III | LUTZ MAGAZINE |

Very few are actually good enough to stick around and be rated independently rated - by Tampa area homeowners as one of the best in the country for fifteen years straight,” Joseph pointed out. Remodeling Magazine includes Morgan Exteriors in their BIG50, their 50 best rated home improvement companies. “Since we offer a lifetime warranty on all our windows, soffits, siding, and doors, we absolutely, positively have to do a textbook installation, every single time. Every window, door, soffit, and siding installation will be backed by our lifetime parts and labor warranty, so we have to make sure that the installation is spot on,” Joseph noted. Their lifetime warranty is even 100% transferable if the home is sold to a new owner. “We get an extremely high number of referrals, and that’s because we do absolutely everything we know how to ensure that you are properly cared for from the first measurements to driving in the last nail.” Joseph commented. One of their satisfied customers, Mary G. said, “We had the hurricane come through and everyone else’s windows were rattling like crazy and ours did not. We slept right through it.” When asked what he most enjoys about their business, Joseph explained, “Giving people a sense of security in their home, lowering their energy bills and reducing their carbon footprint. Important Things Taxpayers Need to Know

M

as They Plan for the 2019 Tax Season

ore families will be able to get more money under the newlyrevised Child Tax Credit, according to the Internal Revenue Service. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), the tax reform legislation passed in December 2017, doubled the maximum Child Tax Credit, boosted income limits to be able to claim the credit, and revised the identification number requirement for 2018 and subsequent years. The new law also created a second smaller credit of up to $500 per dependent aimed at taxpayers supporting older children and other relatives who do not qualify for the Child Tax Credit.

Child Tax Credit increased

Higher income limits mean more families are now eligible for the Child Tax Credit. The credit begins to phase out at $200,000 of modified adjusted gross income, or $400,000 for married couples filing jointly, which is up from the 2017 levels of $75,000 for single filers or $110,000 for married couples filing jointly. Increased from $1,000 to $2,000 per qualifying child, the credit applies if the child is younger than 17 at the end of the tax year, the taxpayer claims the child as a dependent, and the child lives with the taxpayer for more than six months of the year. The qualifying child must also have a valid Social Security Number issued before the due date of the tax return, including extensions. Up to $1,400 of the credit can be refundable for each qualifying child. This means an eligible taxpayer may get a refund even if they don’t owe any tax.

New Credit for Other Dependents

A new tax credit - Credit for Other Dependents - is available for dependents for whom taxpayers cannot claim the Child Tax Credit. These dependents may include dependent children who are age 17 or older at the end of 2018, parents or other qualifying relatives supported by the taxpayer. ________________________________________________________________ Hernandez Accounting Solutions, Inc. 813.406.4406 20703 Sterlington Drive, Unit 102, Land O Lakes, FL 34638 www.hernandezaccounting.com CONTENT CREDIT: GET SET NET

Local Firefighters Play Hockey to Support Summer Camp for Kids with Burn Injuries T

he Tampa Bay Firefighters Hockey Club is a group of local firefighters who play hockey for a good cause. On Saturday, March 23rd, they will be playing a Charity Hockey Game against the Air Force Technical Applications Center. Ben Kozich, who runs the organization said, “This game will benefit Camp Hopetake, a weeklong summer camp for children with burn injuries. The camp is primarily supported by the firefighters of the Local 754.” Ben added, “We’ve played this team for charity events for the last five years so we have a great rivalry and it is always a lot of fun.” The event will host a silent auction, various raffles and appearances from Tampa Bay Lightning Alumni. Beauty and Style

F

Reigns on the Parade of Homes

or two exceptional weekends each March, the Tampa Bay Builders Association hosts the Tampa Bay Parade of Homes. This annual event allows the public, unbridled access to the area’s premier builders and their incredible model homes. The very first Parade of Homes ostensibly took place in Minnesota in 1948, and its popularity has continued for decades. If you are infatuated with home design shows, or you are a pro at Pinterest, you will feel like a ‘kid in a candy store’ as you tour the amazing collection of homes featured by area builders. While you may not be currently in the market to purchase a home, the opportunity to experience new design ideas, floor plans, stylish layouts, and unique décor is priceless!

Home Value

Sellers Buyers

This year’s Tampa Bay Parade of Homes will focus on Voice Assisted Devices, Home Chat Systems, and other Smart Home innovations that have become standard. Developers have taken it a step further and have begun to incorporate state-of-the-art technology into the design of neighborhoods. The area’s first ULTRAFi Community is at Union Park in Wesley Chapel, residents here are afforded the fastest WiFi speeds in the nation, and every home is built to be a Smart Home.

Reigning National Trends

There are many exciting 2019 trends to watch for at the Parade of Homes. Each year, popular paint manufacturers introduce their ‘Color of the Year’ selection. Benjamin Moore describes its 2019 Color of the Year as “Calm, composed and effortlessly sophisticated.” Metropolitan (AF-690) is described as “stylish gray with cool undertones.” Yes – Gray is still in but so are bold colors and jewel tones like Benjamin Moore’s Beau Green (2054-20)–Gorgeous!

Other Hot Items to Watch For

Designed Ceilings: No more plain white ceilings! Working Pantries: Like a room complete with separate fridge, wine fridge, sink, and counter space! Floating Shelves: GOOD BYE built-ins! Bold Patterned Backsplashes & Full Backsplash Walls: Want to make a WOW Kitchen? Try this! Light Colored Flooring: Less contrast is IN! Black Bathrooms: Okay, we must admit, we are a bit leery of this one. Darker/Wood countertops: Granite has been out for a while but is the quartz reign also over? Sustainable Materials: Jute, Rice Paper, Clay, Stone!

Just like any area, Tampa has its style and trends that are popular. These are the new trends we found in the area: Thick Crown Molding: We LOVE this! It makes such a BIG impact! Neutral Colors: Local style is leaning away from gray (apologies to Benjamin Moore). We see more cream, off white, and colors like Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige (SW 7036), one of our favorites! Statement Lighting: You can’t spend enough on lights! Put more money in this budget basket! Cream Cabinets: No more White – No more Gray! Brass Hardware: Brass, Brass, and more Brass! Free Standing ‘Footless’ Tubs: Tubs have become a destination! Wood Beam Ceilings: Design from Head to Toe – ceilings have become as crucial as floors! Full Wall Backsplash: This is THE thing! Entire walls of backsplash in kitchens and baths! Quartz: The Tampa area still loves its Quartz countertops.

Outside Living: Living in the Greater Tampa Bay area means your outdoor space is part of your living space. Pools, Spas, Outdoor Kitchens all must-haves!

Awards–Recognition

Homes that entered the parade are judged for their architectural design, layout and their master suite and kitchen design. To earn the 2019 Award for Best is a coveted title for the builders who have entered the contest. The goal for builder entries is the Grand Diamond Award for the overall best model home. In 2018, this award was given to ICI Homes at Fishhawk Ranch in Lithia. The Parade of Homes is an extraordinary opportunity for area builders to achieve exposure and show off their expertise. Many builders pair special incentives with the parade to entice the public to make the jump to a new home!
