By Dick Smothers I love 20 Minutes to Fitness... here’s why. I get a special joy from the fact that I’m doing something for myself that I know is helping me become a stronger, more fit, 75+ year old.
In 2011, I embarked on an extended road trip in my RV that took me to the west coast and points in between and I couldn’t keep up my workout program. I didn’t pick it up again until last year. I knew that I had lost some muscle mass and was curious to see how soon I could get it back... I was amazed! With every session I’m getting stronger. My stronger body makes my life easier and more enjoyable. My trainer is an excellent coach and, I think accepts the fact that I like to talk while I’m working out, but that’s just how I do it. It’s not mandatory to be a motor mouth. I’ll ask her things like, “Did you add weight? How much? How much time did I do last time? How much time have I done so far? Is that all? You’re kidding... I don’t think I can do anymore!” She’ll say, “Yes you can, try one more.” I try, I do one more and it is not easy, but quite often I find enough strength to do another one after that. That’s what it’s all about. That’s the genius of this program. I exhaust my muscle groups with a high weight for my ability and a low number of slow repetitions... once a week. I don’t have to do three sets of ten, two to three times a week at the gym. This is a medically based, scientifically proven training program performed on unique specialized equipment with extremely knowledgeable coaches in a semi-private non-gym environment. I bike, swim, stand up paddle-board, dance, yoga, meditate, take naps and more. I live with a great sense of gratitude of the blessing God has given me. I don’t take anything for granted, including my muscles. Since I added “20 Minutes to Fitness” to my life, I’m doing just fine, thank

I had been around gyms for many years and I was quite aware of all sorts of workout philosophies, but never this one. In and out in about twenty minutes? This I had to see. I saw it and I’m still here.

Best Friends Animal Society
B
est Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with more than 2,600 animal welfare groups across the country, Best Friends has regional centers in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City and operates the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. The Utah sanctuary is a lifesaving haven for hundreds of adoptable animals, nestled in between the sprawling red rocks of Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion national parks. According to Emily Park, Southeast Regional Specialist, “Best Friends was founded in 1984 and is a pioneer in the no-kill movement. We have helped reduce the number of animals euthanized in shelters nationwide from an estimated 17 million per year to about 800,000. That means there are still nearly 2,200 dogs and cats killed every day in shelters just because they don’t have safe places to call home. Best Friends is determined to bring the country to no-kill by the year 2025. Working collaboratively with shelters, rescue groups, other organizations and the community, we will end the killing and Save Them All.”

Best Friends Animal Society was a sponsor of the 1st Annual Tampa Bay Regional Mega Pet Adoption Event held at the Hernando County Fairgrounds May 17th – 19th. During the 3-day event, 371 homeless pets found the homes that they desperately needed. Best Friends also contributed free treatment for all dogs who had heartworms so their new owners didn’t have to bear that medical expense. even Oaks hosted a gathering to bring the community together on Memorial Day weekend. Attendees were entertained with great music by a DJ who played lots of fun hits for the kids who took part in multiple dance contests and games. Residents also participated in the Annual Rubber Ducky Race, which was won this year by two boys, Wyatt Turpin and Kendrick Dietsch. It was an unseasonably hot day and the crowd enjoyed the big water slide and floating in the pool to cool off.

ccording to Rachel Stever, Education and Outreach Coordinator for Pasco County Animal Services, “PCAS is a Save 90 Shelter, meaning our goal is to save 90% of all the animals that arrive at our shelter. Our current live release rate is 91%. Our live release for dogs is 96% for the calendar year and 83% for cats. Our shelter does not euthanize for time or space limitations and we are able to remain this way through adoptions and our amazing rescue partners that help support us. Our ultimate goal is to reach a 100% live release rate. PCAS openly posts their monthly statistics on their website.” Mike Shumate, PCAS Animal Services Director, stated, “We just participated in the multi-county Tampa Bay Regional Mega Pet Adoption and it was so successful that we plan to collaborate with surrounding counties and rescue groups again to make this an annual event. 371 homeless pets were adopted during the three day event held May 17th - 19th at the Hernando County Fairgrounds.” Mike explained, “We have joined forces with other organizations to support the national No-Kill Movement, with the objective to eliminate euthanizing homeless animals in all U.S. shelters by 2025.” Mike added, “To that end, PCAS offers many community programs to provide low cost spay and neutering, promote adoptions, and support community pet health, however many Pasco residents may not be aware of all the services that we offer.”

We offer the SNIP Low Income Program for Pasco citizens and also the Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Release Program (TNVR), for community and feral cats. Barn Cat Program We offer this option for un-socialized cats. We provide resources for the new owners on how to manage the cats and their new ‘pest control’ duties on their property. Low Cost Vaccine and Microchip Clinic Vaccines, heartworm tests, feline FIV/Leukemia tests and microchips are offered at a low cost. Offered every Wednesday from 9am to 11am and no appointment is necessary. A license must be purchased for the resident’s pet when they attend the clinic. Licensing Licensing is required by ordinance for both cats and dogs. Most of our county veterinarians can license a resident’s pet during their annual vet visit but you can also come to the shelter with proof of vaccination to receive the up to date license.

In addition, Hudson Regional Library and Fiscal Services in New Port Richey are able to issue licenses as well. Licensing is $10 for altered dogs and $5 for altered cats. Additional prices are applicable depending on 1 or 3 year status and alteration status. Animal Control This team covers stray and lost pets, rabies control, cruelty and neglect concerns and cases, hoarding cases and overall enforcement of animal related county ordinances. The team is sometimes able to return pets to their owners, enabling the pets to avoid ever having to come to the shelter. For residents who need to report a complaint, they are able to do so on the Pasco County website and in some cases, can do so anonymously. Facility Renovations PCAS is currently undergoing renovations in our C building. It is the oldest building on the property and they are expecting this project to be completed in the next month or two. The shelter will be gaining more kennel space and will also have a food bank. PCAS offers this along with other information to assist pet owners with getting back on their feet versus needing to re-home or surrender a beloved pet. Donations and Supporters Rachel pointed out, “Friends of Animal Services, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that helps with the enrichment and medical needs for pets at our shelter. They helped with major purchases such as our digital x-ray machine, new shade sails for the yards, heartworm treatments, and specialty surgeries and procedures that help in our lifesaving efforts.” Volunteering Opportunities PCAS is always looking for volunteers and they offer many different ways to get involved. The Owl’s Nest
fter 11 years, Kris Porter traded in her position caring for baby animals as Senior Zoo Keeper in the Animal Nursery at Busch Gardens for a new adventure. She had spent years working with over 350 different species at the park, caring for everything from birds to panda bears, but she began caring for a new baby of her own when her first child was born prematurely at only 4 pounds. It turns out that her days of caring for wildlife were not over. Twelve years had passed since she left Busch Gardens, and she was contacted by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission about an opportunity to work with animals again by becoming a rescue and rehab specialist. Kris said, “Eventually Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife was born and I found that devoting a large number of hours to such an incredible cause has literally changed my life.” Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife is a 100% volunteer run registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that is state and federally permitted to rescue, rehabilitate and (when possible) release sick, injured, and orphaned native wildlife. Kris noted, “We work with all native Florida wildlife including birds, otters, skunks, squirrels, foxes, bobcats, raccoons, tortoises, turtles and many other mammals. They serve six counties including Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, and assist in neighboring counties. Kris pointed out, “We receive no funding from any governmental agency and are strictly funded by donors and fundraising and we’re always looking for volunteers and corporate sponsors to help us achieve our goals in caring for area wildlife in need.” The Owl’s Nest is the proud recipient of the SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Conservation Grant for 2018 – 2019 and has been a Conservation Partner with The Downtown Denver Aquarium since 2016. “At Owl’s Nest it’s our goal to only get involved when needed and to do what is best for the animal, which is not always an easy decision. We work closely with several other local and regional facilities to make sure that all of our cases receive the care they need and when release is not possible, but a good quality of life is still possible, place them into a facility for long term care,” Kris explained. The sanctuary is assisted in making success stories come true by the team at the Wildlife Docs of Busch Gardens in addition to several other invaluable vets that also do Pro Bono work for the organization. Kris described, “Most of the animals I have dealt with have been in accidents due to domestic pet attacks, collisions on highways and impact with cars, mothers orphaning their babies, poisoning, fishing hooks and line, and the list goes on and on. Working with I am pleased to put in the time, effort and yes, the money it takes to get an animal back to freedom in nature. So many have contributed over the years for which I am truly thankful, for in my eyes every one of them is God’s creature and deserves a chance.” Kris is very excited as the Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife has recently been approached by several foundations who are looking to create an ecotourism site for the organization. They are currently looking at properties for this new venture. The facilities for Owl’s Nest are not open to the public as they are primarily set up as critical care locations, however the new ecotourism site will be open to visitors who will be able to see the amazing work they do for creatures great and small in our backyards. The sanctuary does not receive funding from any government agencies so their fundraising efforts are essential. They host fundraising events, and along with other vital donations, this helps them afford to continue saving lives.

very summer, my dogs were a bit more anxious than usual. While my neighbors celebrated July 4th with fireworks, my beloved dogs, Odie, Nina, and Jolene would pace the house, stopping to shake and bark with each BOOM. As unique as my dogs are in their personalities, in noise anxiety, they are not alone. According to a 2015 study published in Applied Animal Behavior Science, Norwegian researchers found that dogs are more afraid of fireworks than they are of gunshots, thunderstorms, or heavy traffic. The study took into account 5,000 dogs (in 17 breeds) and asked their owners to rank their reaction to four noise stimuli: fireworks, gunshots, traffic, and thunderstorms; and of those, 21 percent of dogs showed “strong or very strong signs of being fearful” during fireworks. This was far greater than the 10 percent of dogs afraid of thunderstorms and the 14 percent of dogs afraid of gunshots. The study also found that fear of loud noises increases with age. And it isn’t just your dog who is scared, it is your cats, too. A 2010 study in New Zealand found that of the 3,527 pet owners surveyed (both dogs and cats), over 46 percent displayed a level of fear of fireworks “recognizable to their owners.” Despite their inclination to panic, your pet does not have to spend the coming weeks in fear. With a few simple precautions, Independence Day does not have to mean stress for your furry friends.
Your natural instinct may be to let your dog join you outside as you light the fireworks, but for an anxious dog, going outside during fireworks can trigger their fight or flight response. Don’t give your pet the opportunity to run away or get too close because they may not react the way they normally would when they are in panic-mode. Instead, take your dog out for a long walk earlier in the day, and then keep them inside in a calm, relaxing environment before the loud noises begin. The pet’s environment should remain as routine and normal as possible. Keep curtains or blinds closed to prevent dogs from becoming frightened by the bright lights and make sure that they have access to their favorite toys and comforting bedding. Treat your dog normally (a few extra good belly rubs won’t hurt) and make sure your dog has something to do—like playing with a special toy. Playing soft music can also help ease your dog’s fears as the fireworks get underway. Your dog will already be in a heightened state from all the extra stimuli, so try to keep them apart from guests and small children if you have company. Although they may normally love to mingle with your guests and play with children, the loud noises and fear-based responses may cause them to behave differently, which could result in extra stress for everyone.
Sometimes, the most helpful solutions are the most obvious ones. For example, wrapping your pet in something with weight or slight pressure creates a calming effect, according to a recent study examined in the Wall Street Journal. Just like weighted blankets help people with anxiety, creating a comfortable weighted shirt or swaddle can give the dog a sense of feeling grounded and calm, so long as they are still able to move around freely. You can find vests, like the ThunderShirt, at your local pet store. You can also save money by wrapping your pet’s chest in an ace bandage (but not too tight!) to create the same effect.
There are natural remedies to alleviate the anxiousness your pets feel during fireworks. CBD products for pets can make a huge difference in reducing fear, stress, and anxiety. Full spectrum hemp CBD will interact with a pet’s endocannabinoid system and will tell your pets’ cells to stay calm, stopping the release of adrenaline hormones. For example, I give my pets CBD oil any time I hear a thunderstorm starting or 20 minutes before I know fireworks will begin. Instead of panting, pacing, or barking, they lie down and take a nap. CBD is also less harsh on your pet’s liver and kidneys than children’s Benadryl, which is often recommended for anxious pets. With CBD, your pet will not turn into a zombie and will not have any adverse reactions. Remember, no matter how stressed your pet is when the fireworks start, try to stay as calm as possible when you are around your dog. Getting frustrated and yelling at them to stop barking will not help. With a little preparation and a lot of patience, your dog will be able to rest easily this Independence Day. 1st Annual Tampa Bay Regional
Mega Pet Adoption Event Five
county animal services programs and many local shelters rallied together at the Hernando County Fairgrounds in Brooksville and found loving homes for 371 homeless dogs and cats. The 3 day event showcased almost 700 pets in need of good homes, so if you missed this special event please contact your local shelter now as many pets are still waiting to be adopted. Adopters were screened & spent time getting to know their new family members. Many were senior dogs, including Rocky, a 13 year-old that found his forever home with new Mom, Tina. The event was sponsored by Best Friends Animal Society and the Pet Resources Foundation, Inc. and all adoption fees were waived. All of the animals were spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and ready to go home with their new families. Best Friends Animal Society contributed free treatment for any dogs who had heartworms so their new owners didn’t have to bear that expense. This collaboration by Pasco, Hernando, Hillsborough, Polk and Citrus Counties and many local shelters will now host this as an annual event so check your calendar next spring.

know they say time flies when you get older – but really, where has this year gone? We are already well into May with another hurricane season upon us. Hurricane season officially begins June 1st and continues until November 30th. And it’s never too early to prepare. According to Wikipedia, the 2017 hurricane season was categorized as 'hyperactive and catastrophic' while the 2018 season was referenced as 'above-average and damaging'. So, what could be in store for 2019? Thankfully, predictions made by Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project suggest that we will have an average or below average hurricane season. Nevertheless, we live in a hurricane-prone region, which requires certain precautions to protect our homes and ourselves. Being a Texas girl, I had become accustomed to the dangers related to tornadoes, but my first experience with a hurricane was Irma in 2017. The devastation Irma caused followed closely by hurricane Maria taught me many things about hurricanes in somewhat of a ‘crash course.’ I was lucky; the worst thing I had to deal with was a weeklong power outage. Many others suffered far worse.

There are many ‘Hurricane Safety Checklists’ available. I found a checklist on the Red Cross website that is very detailed. Checklists tend to outline how you should prepare once a storm is headed your way. But what can we do in advance, far Van

before the storm track is determined, to prepare our homes and ourselves? I think many of us suffer from the ‘It won’t happen to me,’ syndrome. Luckily, this is mostly true but it’s still not a fair gamble when the two most important things are at stake: life and home. Beyond the normal batteries and extra water checklist, let’s concentrate on fortifying your home against the power of a hurricane.
Fortifying Your Home ROOF STRAPS AND CLIPS
After Hurricane Andrew hit Florida in 1992, many in the home industry had to think about building codes and how to better protect the public. High Wind Standards were introduced in 1995, but it wasn’t until 2002 when Florida’s system was effective. By 2004 the International Building Code was in effect in Florida with some Florida specific aspects. Based on the general life of a roof – most roofs that were put on a home prior to 2002 have been replaced, but that doesn’t necessarily mean your current roof has the protection it needs. Hurricane straps and clips that have been installed by way of retrofitting may not be installed correctly, leaving a homeowner with a false sense of security regarding their roof. Thankfully, insurance companies recognize the increased safety and durability that a properly secured roof provides and therefore offer attractive discounts on homeowner’s insurance for properly installed or retrofitted roofs. You can call virtually any Licensed Home Inspector in the State of Florida and request a Wind Mitigation Certification on your roof, which might save you money, or even better, save your roof!
HURRICANE SHUTTERS
I still remember what I was thinking when I first saw a truly fortified home here in Florida. With the push of a button, giant panels rolled down to cover the floor to ceiling windows of the home. I remember thinking how unattractive the roll-down shutters were. Flash forward to 2017 (seven years later) and I would have done just about anything to have those shutters on my own home. When you are enduring a storm, the idea of something crashing through your windows is beyond scary. Not long ago, Florida building codes came to the rescue once again and required hurricane shutters for all new construction homes. But if you haven’t purchased a home built after 2012, you likely don’t have this protection. Instead, you are left battling the throngs of people trying to get into the local home improvement store to buy up plywood to hammer into the side of their house. There are several different levels of protection that can be added to any home: hurricane screens, hurricane panels, and hurricane shutters. Again, insurance companies respect the investment for these items and reflect it in attractive insurance discounts. OH NO! THE WASTE WON’T FLOW! Hurricanes are accompanied by enormous amounts of rain. There are many issues Central Floridians face about heavy rain. One issue is the effect of heavy downpours on septic systems. I can’t imagine anything worse to deal with then a backed up septic system in the middle of a hurricane. Make sure your septic system is equipped with a backwater
valve which will stop any sewage from backing up into your home. Prior to the hurricane season, it may be a good idea to have your septic system pumped and inspected. You can always add a backwater valve if you don’t already have one. A licensed plumber typically does this. ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A GENERATOR! HARD-LINED THAT IS! As I suffered for days on end without electricity, all I could hear was the steady drone of my neighbor’s generator. I had neighbor envy – bad. I sat in the dark, imagining them in front of their TV with popcorn and cold sodas. Generators are available for every budget. The most common generator is a gas-powered one that sits outside with extension cords running into the house to keep the most important items running. Most people use them to power up refrigerators or other smaller appliances. Sometimes there are greater risks involved with the loss of power that a standard generator simply cannot maintain. For those of us who use well water – the well pump is a terrible thing to be without. Hard-Lined generator systems are a large, yet important investment. Costs for a whole house back-up system can range from $9000 to $15,000 (higher if you have more than one AC unit) according to Eau Gallie Electric. They go on to say, “If your home has natural gas, you will probably be at the lower end of the spectrum. If you require a propane tank, you will be at the higher end of the cost spectrum depending on how much run time you need. The size of the propane tank you will need is dictated by the run time you desire and you'll need to factor in the cost to fill the tank initially."
